Get to know the Companions, the scholars, and the most eminent among them.
Here is a serious challenge: who am I?
I am one of the younger Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
I was the first child born to the Ansar in Medina after the Migration.
My father was also a Companion.
He was the first of the Ansar to pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, on the day of Saqifah.
I was born in Medina fourteen months after the Migration.
My mother brought me to the Prophet, peace be upon him.
He performed the tahnik for me and gave her the glad tidings that I would live a praiseworthy life,
that I would be killed as a martyr, and that I would enter Paradise.
I heard the hadith of the ship from the Prophet, peace be upon him,
in which he says:
"The likeness of the one who upholds the limits of Allah and the one who transgresses them
is like a group of people who drew lots for places on a ship.
Some of them were assigned the upper deck and some the lower deck.
When those on the lower deck needed water,
they had to pass by those above them.
They said,
'If we were to make a hole in our portion,
we would not disturb those above us.'
If they leave them to do what they want,
they will all perish together.
But if they restrain their hands,
they will all be saved together."
One day, the poet al-A'sha came to me while he was ill,
and I was the governor of Hims.
I said to him,
"What brings you here?"
He said,
"To seek your support, honor our kinship, and settle my debts."
I said,
"By Allah, I do not have what you seek,
but I will ask the people for something on your behalf."
Then I stood up and ascended the pulpit,
and said, "O people of Hims,
this man is your cousin from Iraq,
and he is seeking your assistance.
What do you think?"
They replied,
"We give you authority over our wealth."
I refused that from them,
but they insisted,
"We have indeed given you authority over our wealth."
[They pledged] two dinars from every man.
There were twenty thousand men on the register.
So I brought out forty thousand dinars for him from the public treasury.
When their stipends were distributed,
I deducted two dinars from the share of each man.
