Forty hadiths on the virtue of charity. On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him. From the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said: While a man was in a desolate stretch of land, He heard a voice in a cloud saying, "Water the garden of so-and-so." That cloud then drifted away, And poured its water onto a rocky, volcanic tract of land. Suddenly, one of the channels there Absorbed all of that water. The man followed the water, And found a man standing in his garden, Redirecting the water with his shovel. He said to him, "O servant of Allah, What is your name?" He replied, "So-and-so," Giving the same name he had heard in the cloud. The man then asked him, "O servant of Allah, Why did you ask me my name?" He replied, "I heard a voice in the cloud Whose water this is, saying, 'Water the garden of so-and-so,' Using your name. So, what do you do with it?" He said, "Since you have said this, I observe what it produces, Then I give one-third of it in charity, My family and I eat one-third, And I reinvest one-third back into it." Recorded by Muslim.
