00:00:00.180 --> 00:00:08.539
Summary of the concepts of Ahl al-Sunnah

00:00:08.539 --> 00:00:10.539
Principles of excommunication (takfir)

00:00:10.539 --> 00:00:16.820
The issue of excommunicating a specific individual or not is a grave matter.

00:00:16.820 --> 00:00:18.820
This is from two perspectives:

00:00:18.820 --> 00:00:20.820
First,

00:00:20.820 --> 00:00:23.820
Excommunicating an individual who does not deserve it

00:00:23.820 --> 00:00:28.820
based merely on doubts that do not rise to the level of certainty in their excommunication.

00:00:28.820 --> 00:00:30.920
Second,

00:00:30.920 --> 00:00:35.920
Not excommunicating someone despite the presence of conditions and absence of impediments

00:00:35.920 --> 00:00:42.109
that would definitively warrant their excommunication and treating them with the rulings of Islam.

00:00:42.109 --> 00:00:47.109
Excommunicating a specific individual has principles that must be initiated from and observed.

00:00:47.109 --> 00:00:49.109
The most important of them are:

00:00:49.109 --> 00:00:50.109
Firstly,

00:00:50.109 --> 00:00:54.109
The ruling on a specific individual must be based on knowledge and justice.

00:00:54.109 --> 00:00:58.109
This means that the ruling of excommunication or non-excommunication

00:00:58.109 --> 00:01:04.109
must stem from religious knowledge of the rulings of excommunication, its parameters, and its conditions,

00:01:04.109 --> 00:01:08.109
and factual knowledge of the state of the specific individual being judged.

00:01:08.109 --> 00:01:11.109
One must verify all of this,

00:01:11.109 --> 00:01:16.109
and the ruling must not be based on assumptions, delusions, or probabilities.

00:01:16.109 --> 00:01:19.109
The ruling must be made with justice and piety,

00:01:19.109 --> 00:01:22.109
guarding against personal desires and self-interest.

00:01:22.109 --> 00:01:24.109
Allah the Almighty says:

00:01:24.109 --> 00:01:27.109
“(O man), follow not that whereof thou hast no knowledge. Lo! the hearing and the sight and the heart - of each of these it will be asked.” (17:36)

00:01:27.109 --> 00:01:34.109
“(O man), follow not that whereof thou hast no knowledge. Lo! the hearing and the sight and the heart - of each of these it will be asked.” (17:36)

00:01:34.109 --> 00:01:36.109
And Allah the Almighty says:

00:01:36.109 --> 00:01:42.109
“O ye who believe! Be steadfast witnesses for Allah in equity, and let not hatred of any people seduce you that ye deal not justly. Deal justly, that is nearer to your duty. Observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Informed of what ye do.” (5:8)

00:01:42.109 --> 00:01:47.109
And let not the hatred of a people incite you to not be just.

00:01:47.109 --> 00:01:50.109
“O ye who believe! Be steadfast witnesses for Allah in equity, and let not hatred of any people seduce you that ye deal not justly. Deal justly, that is nearer to your duty. Observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Informed of what ye do.” (5:8)

00:01:50.109 --> 00:01:52.109
And fear Allah.

00:01:52.109 --> 00:01:56.109
Indeed, Allah is well-acquainted with what you do.

00:01:56.109 --> 00:01:58.370
Secondly,

00:01:58.370 --> 00:02:03.370
The reference for defining faith and disbelief, and what they necessitate,

00:02:03.370 --> 00:02:06.370
must be the clarification of Allah the Exalted in His Book,

00:02:06.370 --> 00:02:10.370
and the clarification of His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in his Sunnah,

00:02:10.370 --> 00:02:13.370
and as understood by the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them.

00:02:13.370 --> 00:02:17.370
This principle is a branch of the preceding one,

00:02:17.370 --> 00:02:21.370
as it is not permissible to delve into matters of faith and disbelief

00:02:21.370 --> 00:02:25.370
except with firm knowledge of their meanings and boundaries,

00:02:25.370 --> 00:02:27.370
as understood by the righteous salaf.

00:02:27.370 --> 00:02:34.370
Otherwise, one falls into the affliction of the heresies of innovators in defining both faith and disbelief,

00:02:34.370 --> 00:02:36.370
such as the Khawarij and the Murji'ah.

00:02:36.370 --> 00:02:38.620
Thirdly,

00:02:38.620 --> 00:02:40.620
Whoever's Islam is established with certainty

00:02:40.620 --> 00:02:44.620
cannot be removed from it except with certainty.

00:02:44.620 --> 00:02:48.620
This falls under the great jurisprudential principle:

00:02:48.620 --> 00:02:51.620
Certainty is not removed by doubt.

00:02:51.620 --> 00:02:54.659
So, what is certainly established as apostasy (riddah)

00:02:54.659 --> 00:02:56.659
is ruled upon as such.

00:02:56.659 --> 00:02:58.659
And what is doubted to be apostasy

00:02:58.659 --> 00:03:00.659
is not ruled upon as such.

00:03:00.659 --> 00:03:02.849
Fourthly,

00:03:02.849 --> 00:03:05.849
Rulings in this world are based on the outward appearance,

00:03:05.849 --> 00:03:07.849
and Allah is the one who knows the innermost secrets.

00:03:07.849 --> 00:03:10.849
So, one does not investigate the inner states of people,

00:03:10.849 --> 00:03:13.849
as Allah has not tasked us with that.

00:03:13.849 --> 00:03:15.849
Whoever's outward appearance is Islam,

00:03:15.849 --> 00:03:17.849
they are ruled upon as Muslim.

00:03:17.849 --> 00:03:20.849
And whoever's outward appearance contradicts faith,

00:03:20.849 --> 00:03:22.849
they are ruled upon accordingly.

00:03:22.849 --> 00:03:26.849
The determining factor in this is the last state of the accountable person.

00:03:26.849 --> 00:03:29.849
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:03:29.849 --> 00:03:32.849
used to deal with people according to their outward appearance,

00:03:32.849 --> 00:03:35.849
accepting the outward Islam of the hypocrites,

00:03:35.849 --> 00:03:38.849
even though they were disbelievers inwardly.

00:03:38.849 --> 00:03:41.849
Unless this hypocrite manifested their disbelief,

00:03:41.849 --> 00:03:43.849
by word or deed,

00:03:43.849 --> 00:03:44.849
then at that point,

00:03:44.849 --> 00:03:47.849
they would be ruled upon based on this outward manifestation.

00:03:47.849 --> 00:03:50.229
Fifthly,

00:03:50.229 --> 00:03:53.229
An absolute ruling of excommunication on a statement or action

00:03:53.229 --> 00:03:56.229
does not necessitate ruling on a specific individual with it.

00:03:56.229 --> 00:03:58.229
Rather, one says:

00:03:58.229 --> 00:04:00.229
This statement or action is disbelief.

00:04:00.229 --> 00:04:03.229
It does not necessarily mean that everyone who engages in it

00:04:03.229 --> 00:04:05.229
is an individual disbeliever,

00:04:05.229 --> 00:04:08.229
until the conditions for excommunication are met

00:04:08.229 --> 00:04:10.229
and the impediments are absent.

00:04:10.229 --> 00:04:12.229
This is an important ruling in excommunication.

00:04:12.229 --> 00:04:15.229
And excommunication, declaring someone an innovator (tabdi'), and declaring someone a transgressor (tafsīq)

00:04:15.229 --> 00:04:17.519
Sixthly,

00:04:17.519 --> 00:04:21.519
One does not rule on a specific individual based on the implications of their statement or action,

00:04:21.519 --> 00:04:24.519
nor is one bound by the necessary consequences of their statement or action,

00:04:24.519 --> 00:04:28.519
unless these implications and consequences are presented to them,

00:04:28.519 --> 00:04:31.519
and they accept and commit to them.

00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:34.519
However, if they deny them when presented,

00:04:34.519 --> 00:04:38.220
then they are not ruled to be disbelievers.

00:04:38.220 --> 00:04:41.220
