Pause and reflect upon the Companions, the scholars, and the most exalted.
A new challenge: who am I?
I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, from the tribe of Sada'.
Sada' is a clan from Yemen, from the region of al-Bayda'.
I learned that the Prophet, peace be upon him, had sent an army toward us.
I hurried to him and pledged my allegiance to Islam.
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, send the army back, and I will guarantee you the Islam and obedience of my people."
He sent them back, and I wrote a letter to my people.
They then came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, as Muslims.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me:
"O brother of Sada', you are indeed obeyed among your people."
I replied, "Rather, it is Allah who guided them to Islam."
He, peace be upon him, said, "Shall I not appoint you as their leader?"
I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah."
He wrote a document for me in which he gave me instructions.
Then I said, "O Messenger of Allah,
assign me a portion of their zakat."
He said, "Yes," and wrote another document for me.
This took place during one of his journeys.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, stopped at a place,
and the people of that place came to him,
complaining about their governor.
They said,
"He has seized us for something that happened between us and his people during the days of ignorance."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
"There is no good in leadership for a believer."
Then another man came to him and said,
"O Messenger of Allah, give me [something]."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
"Whoever asks people for wealth while he is already self-sufficient,
it is only a headache in the head,
and a disease in the belly."
Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
traveled during the first part of the night.
I kept close to him, and I was near him,
until no one remained with him but me.
When the time for the dawn prayer arrived,
Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him, was delayed.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, commanded me,
and I gave the call to prayer (adhan).
When the time for prayer came,
Bilal wanted to give the iqamah.
But the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to him:
"The brother of Sada' gave the adhan,
and whoever gives the adhan, he gives the iqamah."
So I performed the iqamah for the prayer.
When the Prophet, peace be upon him, finished the prayer,
I brought him the two documents.
I said, "O Messenger of Allah,
excuse me from this [leadership]."
He asked me for the reason.
I said, "Because I heard what you said regarding leadership,
and regarding asking people for things without need."
So he excused me.
And he said,
"Direct me to a man whom I may appoint over you."
I directed him to a man from the delegation that had come to him,
and he appointed him over them.
Then I said, "O Messenger of Allah,
we have a well.
In the winter,
its water is sufficient for us,
and we gather around it.
But when summer comes,
its water decreases,
and we disperse to the water sources around us.
Now that we have embraced Islam,
and everyone around us is an enemy,
so pray to Allah for us regarding our well,
that its water may suffice us,
so we may gather around it and not disperse."
He, peace be upon him, called for
seven pebbles.
He rubbed them in his hand and prayed over them.
Then he said:
"Go with these pebbles.
When you reach the well,
throw them into it one by one,
and mention the name of Allah."
We did as he told us,
and after that, we were unable
to see the bottom of the well
because of the abundance of its water.
