A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions from the Muhajirun (Emigrants).
I embraced Islam in the seventh year after the Hijrah.
I remained in the company of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, both in his travels and at home.
I witnessed the Battle of Khaybar and the subsequent military expeditions with him.
I participated in the wars against the apostates.
And in the Islamic conquests.
I was known for my worship and my asceticism regarding worldly life.
I was a young man in Makkah.
When the people were called to go out to the area of al-Tan'im, outside the Sacred Precinct (Haram).
To witness the execution of Khubayb ibn 'Adi, may Allah be pleased with him.
After they had captured him through treachery.
I was deeply affected by that incident.
What I heard and witnessed of Khubayb’s love for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, took root in my heart.
As did the depth of his faith in the religion of Islam.
That was the cause of my conversion to Islam.
Later, the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, appointed me as governor of Homs.
I went there while I was averse to the position of leadership.
Then, he asked its people about my conduct among them.
The people of Homs spoke well of me.
However, they complained to him about four matters regarding me.
So 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, summoned me.
He said to them, "Bring forth what you have against your governor."
They said, "He does not come out to us until the day is well advanced."
'Umar asked me about that.
I said, "By Allah, I truly hated to mention this."
"But it is because my family has no servant."
"So I knead my dough and leave it until it ferments."
"Then I bake my bread, perform wudu for the Duha prayer,"
"And then I go out to the people."
'Umar said, "And what else do you complain about?"
They said, "He does not respond to us at night."
I replied, "I have dedicated the day to them and the night to my Lord."
'Umar said, "And what else?"
They said, "He does not come out to us one day every month."
I said, "I have no servant to wash my garment."
"And I have no clothes other than what I am wearing."
"So I wash my garment and wait for it to dry."
"And at the end of the day, I go out to them."
'Umar said, "And what else do you complain about?"
They said, "He is seized from time to time by a fainting spell."
"Where he becomes absent from those in his gathering."
I said, "I witnessed the execution of Khubayb, may Allah be pleased with him, in Makkah."
"I was among the polytheists at that time."
"The Quraysh crucified him on a piece of wood."
"And they proceeded to cut his body piece by piece until he died."
"Every time I remember that scene I witnessed,"
"And I recall my failure to help Khubayb,"
"I tremble in fear of Allah the Almighty."
"And I am overcome by what overcomes me."
'Umar said, "Praise be to Allah, who did not prove my opinion of you wrong."
After some time, a delegation from the people of Homs came to the Caliph in Madinah.
'Umar said to them,
"Write down for me the names of your poor."
They wrote him a list containing the names of the poor.
And they included my name in it.
'Umar asked, "Who is this?"
They said, "This is our governor."
He said, "Your governor is poor?"
They said, "Yes."
'Umar was astonished and said,
"How can your governor be poor?"
"Where is his stipend?"
"Where is his provision?"
They said, "O Commander of the Faithful,"
"He does not keep anything for himself."
"He spends all of his stipend on us."
'Umar wept.
Then he took a thousand dinars.
He tied them in a purse and sent them to me.
And he said,
"Give him my greetings."
"And tell him,"
"The Commander of the Faithful has sent you this money."
"Use it to meet your needs."
The messenger brought it to me.
I looked at the dinars.
And I began to say, "To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return."
In the morning,
I spent it all in the cause of Allah.
