I am one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
I embraced Islam early on,
because of an animal that guided me to Islam
and to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Medina.
So I migrated to him and accepted Islam at his hands.
I prayed with him facing both Qiblahs,
and I gave him the pledge of allegiance on the Day of al-Hudaybiyyah beneath the tree.
One day, while I was tending my sheep in the Harrah,
a wolf suddenly attacked a ewe from the flock
and seized it. I ran after it until I rescued the sheep from it.
The wolf then sat on its hindquarters and spoke to me in human speech,
saying, "Do you not fear Allah?
You come between me and a provision that Allah has driven to me!"
I said, "How astonishing! A wolf sitting on its hindquarters,
speaking in human speech!"
The wolf said, "Shall I not tell you of something even more astonishing than that?
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
is in Medina between the two Harrahs,
informing the people of news of what has passed before."
So when I heard the wolf's words,
I drove my sheep until I came to Medina,
gathered them into one of its corners,
and then entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him).
I embraced Islam and related to him the hadith of the wolf.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out to the people
and said to me, "Stand up and inform them of your story."
So I informed them of what had happened between me and the wolf.
Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
"The shepherd has spoken the truth." So, who am I?
Allah willing.
The best of generations in deeds and example,
They followed the Messenger in whatever he strove for or said.
They were here, watering our lives like rain clouds,
And their memory continuously rises exalted among us.
They departed, leaving a question in our conscience:
Has any star ever risen and shone brightly like them?
They filled life with glorious achievements through their deeds,
And through them, mankind's world blossomed in pride.
