Among the aesthetic beauties of the Prophetic biography (Seerah)
Is the stimulation of high aspirations
Herein lies a remarkable, stirring method
And a wonderful encouragement of resolve
Which the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, employed
To sharpen their ambitions
And ignite their determination
So that they would set forth without hesitation
And face challenges without faltering
For the prize here is the love of Allah and His Messenger
It is a sign of radiant faith
That repels hypocrisy and hesitation
Sahl Ibn Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him, said
That the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him
Said: "I shall certainly give this banner tomorrow
To a man through whose hands Allah will grant victory
He loves Allah and His Messenger
And Allah and His Messenger love him."
He said: The people spent the night wondering
Which of them would be given it
He energized them with this address
And they spent the night discussing it
And the qualities of that truthful, loving person
Who he was and how he would attain it
When the people reached the morning
They went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him
Each of them hoping to be given it
They only hoped for it
Because of the greatness of the description attached to it
Not because it was a high-ranking command
Or because it promised wealth and riches
Not at all; he asked
"Where is 'Ali Ibn Abi Talib?"
They replied: "He is suffering from his eyes, O Messenger of Allah."
He said: "Send for him."
"Bring him to me."
When he arrived, he spat into his eyes
And prayed for him
And he was healed
As if he had never felt any pain
Then he gave him the banner
He chose 'Ali for his excellent qualities
The sincerity of his orientation
And the prominence of his virtues
Which no one could possibly be ignorant of
For he was the brave leader
And the famous hero
'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, asked
"O Messenger of Allah
Shall I fight them until they become like us?"
He replied
"Proceed at your own pace
Until you arrive at their territory
Then invite them to Islam
And inform them of what is required of them
Regarding the rights of Allah therein
For by Allah, that Allah should guide one man through you
Is better for you than having red camels."
He taught him here the ethics of war
And that it has rules and conditions
Which Islam prides itself on establishing
In contrast to the wars of the barbarians
Who have tyrannized the lands of the East and the West
And spread corruption, destruction, and ruin therein
Employing every internationally prohibited act
And Allah is the One whose help is sought
Before that, the Companions learned the virtue of the love of Allah and His Messenger
And he emphasized the spiritual quality over the physical
And that burning ambition is a path toward it
And the people’s eagerness for such a lofty station
To the extent that 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said in what has been narrated from him
"I never wished for leadership except on that day."
