A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions, from the tribe of Ghifar.
I was a monotheist even in the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era of ignorance), and I never worshipped idols.
I was well known for my courage and bravery.
I forbade myself alcohol, intoxication, and divining arrows.
I was a man of sound intellect and deep reflection.
Word reached me that a man had appeared in Mecca claiming to be a prophet.
So I said to my brother Unays, "Go to this man and bring me news of him."
He went and met him, then returned.
I asked him, "What news do you have?"
He said, "By Allah, I saw a man commanding good and forbidding evil."
I said to him, "You have not satisfied my curiosity with this report."
So I took a traveling bag and a staff, and set out for Mecca.
I did not know the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
and I disliked asking anyone about him.
Then 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me.
He said, "It seems the man is a stranger."
I said, "Yes."
He said, "Then come along to my home."
So I went with him, neither of us asking the other anything.
When morning came, I went to the Mosque to ask about him,
but no one would tell me anything about him.
In the evening, 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me again and said,
"Has the time not come for the man to know his dwelling yet?"
I said, "No."
He said, "Then come with me."
He then asked, "What is your matter, and what brought you to this town?"
I told him, "If you keep my secret, I will tell you."
He said, "I will do so."
I said to him, "Word reached me that a man has appeared here claiming to be a prophet,
and I wished to meet him."
He said to me, "Indeed, you have been rightly guided.
This is my way to him, so follow me."
So I went with him until we entered upon the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I said to him, "Present Islam to me."
He presented it to me, and I embraced Islam on the spot.
He said to me, "Keep this matter secret and return to your land;
perhaps Allah will benefit them through you.
And when news reaches you of our victory, then come to us."
So I set out, returning to my people,
until I came to my brother.
He said to me, "What have you done?"
I said, "I have embraced Islam and believed."
He said, "I have no aversion to your religion;
I, too, have embraced Islam with you and believed."
Then we went to our mother and informed her of our news.
She said, "I have no aversion to the religion of you two;
I, too, have embraced Islam and believed alongside you."
Then I called my tribe, Ghifar, to Islam.
Some of them accepted Islam, while the rest said,
"When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prevails,
we will embrace Islam."
So when the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, arrived
in Medina,
I set out, migrating to him.
The remainder of my tribe then embraced Islam,
and I brought them all to the Prophet, peace be upon him.
Then the tribe of Aslam came as well,
and they said, "O Messenger of Allah,
our brothers—
we accept Islam upon that which they have accepted."
Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
"Ghifar—
may Allah forgive them;
and Aslam—
may Allah grant them peace."
So, who am I?
