00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.399
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

00:00:03.399 --> 00:00:06.690
Treasures of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah).

00:00:06.690 --> 00:00:15.830
The repentance of Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him).

00:00:15.830 --> 00:00:18.230
Al-Bukhari and Muslim related

00:00:18.230 --> 00:00:21.030
on the authority of Ibn Shihab that he said:

00:00:21.030 --> 00:00:25.429
"Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set out on the expedition of Tabuk,

00:00:25.429 --> 00:00:29.230
intending to engage the Byzantines and the Christian Arabs of the Levant."

00:00:29.230 --> 00:00:31.030
Ibn Shihab said:

00:00:31.230 --> 00:00:35.630
"'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Ka'b ibn Malik informed me

00:00:35.630 --> 00:00:37.829
that 'Abd Allah ibn Ka'b—

00:00:37.829 --> 00:00:41.630
who was Ka'b's guide among his sons when he became blind—

00:00:41.630 --> 00:00:42.829
said:

00:00:42.829 --> 00:00:46.030
'I heard Ka'b ibn Malik recount his story

00:00:46.030 --> 00:00:51.829
when he stayed behind and did not accompany the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in the Battle of Tabuk.'

00:00:51.829 --> 00:00:53.829
Ka'b ibn Malik said:

00:00:53.829 --> 00:01:00.030
'I had never stayed behind from any military expedition led by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),

00:01:00.030 --> 00:01:02.030
except for the expedition of Tabuk;

00:01:02.030 --> 00:01:05.230
although I had also stayed behind at the Battle of Badr,

00:01:05.230 --> 00:01:08.030
yet he did not reproach anyone who stayed behind from it.

00:01:08.030 --> 00:01:11.829
For the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had set out

00:01:11.829 --> 00:01:14.629
along with the Muslims seeking only the caravan of Quraysh,

00:01:14.629 --> 00:01:19.829
until Allah brought them and their enemy together without any prior appointment.

00:01:19.829 --> 00:01:25.430
Furthermore, I had witnessed the Night of al-'Aqabah with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:01:25.430 --> 00:01:28.030
when we pledged our allegiance to Islam,

00:01:28.230 --> 00:01:31.829
and I would not trade my presence at al-'Aqabah for having fought at Badr,

00:01:31.829 --> 00:01:35.430
even though Badr is more widely remembered among the people than it.

00:01:35.430 --> 00:01:40.629
And part of my story when I stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:01:40.629 --> 00:01:42.430
during the expedition of Tabuk

00:01:42.430 --> 00:01:45.829
was that I was never physically stronger or more prosperous

00:01:45.829 --> 00:01:49.030
than when I stayed behind from him during that expedition.

00:01:49.030 --> 00:01:52.629
By Allah, I had never before owned two riding mounts at once,

00:01:52.629 --> 00:01:55.829
until I gathered two for that very campaign.

00:01:56.030 --> 00:02:00.829
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) embarked on it during intense heat,

00:02:00.829 --> 00:02:04.230
facing a long journey across barren deserts,

00:02:04.230 --> 00:02:06.829
and confronting a vast enemy army.

00:02:06.829 --> 00:02:09.229
So he made the matter clear to the Muslims

00:02:09.229 --> 00:02:12.229
so that they could prepare adequately for their expedition;

00:02:12.229 --> 00:02:15.629
thus he informed them of the destination he intended.

00:02:15.629 --> 00:02:20.430
The Muslims accompanying the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) were numerous,

00:02:20.430 --> 00:02:23.030
and no written register kept record of them all;

00:02:23.030 --> 00:02:25.759
everyone simply recognized his companions.'

00:02:25.759 --> 00:02:27.159
Ka'b said:

00:02:27.159 --> 00:02:29.960
'Thus, rare was the man who wished to remain behind

00:02:29.960 --> 00:02:32.759
except that he assumed his absence would remain unnoticed,

00:02:32.759 --> 00:02:37.360
unless revelation concerning him was sent down by Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He.

00:02:37.360 --> 00:02:41.560
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) launched that expedition

00:02:41.560 --> 00:02:44.360
at a time when fruits had ripened and shade was most pleasant,

00:02:44.360 --> 00:02:46.560
and I was greatly inclined toward them'—

00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:48.789
that is, leaning toward enjoying them.

00:02:48.789 --> 00:02:53.990
'So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the Muslims with him prepared,

00:02:53.990 --> 00:02:57.389
and I would go out in the morning intending to prepare alongside them,

00:02:57.389 --> 00:02:59.990
but I would return without having accomplished anything,

00:02:59.990 --> 00:03:01.789
saying to myself:

00:03:01.789 --> 00:03:05.189
"I am capable of doing that whenever I wish."

00:03:05.189 --> 00:03:07.789
That state of procrastination continued to overcome me,

00:03:07.789 --> 00:03:10.590
while the people remained earnest in their preparations,

00:03:10.590 --> 00:03:14.590
until morning came and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) marched out,

00:03:14.590 --> 00:03:16.389
with the Muslims alongside him,

00:03:16.389 --> 00:03:19.389
while I had not completed any part of my preparation.

00:03:19.389 --> 00:03:22.389
Then I went out again in the morning to prepare,

00:03:22.389 --> 00:03:25.189
but I returned without having accomplished anything.

00:03:25.189 --> 00:03:27.990
That continued to overcome me

00:03:27.990 --> 00:03:31.189
until the army sped on and the campaign was well underway.'

00:03:31.189 --> 00:03:36.590
This demonstrates that a person must pay attention to a crucial matter,

00:03:36.590 --> 00:03:40.189
which is the absolute necessity of being resolute and decisive;

00:03:40.189 --> 00:03:42.990
for procrastination weakens resolve

00:03:42.990 --> 00:03:47.189
until one abandons what he had firmly intended to do.

00:03:47.189 --> 00:03:50.990
'If you possess sound judgment, be a person of firm resolve;

00:03:50.990 --> 00:03:54.689
for the ruin of sound judgment is hesitation.'

00:03:54.689 --> 00:03:55.889
He said:

00:03:55.889 --> 00:03:58.689
'So I intended to set out and catch up with them,

00:03:58.689 --> 00:04:00.889
and how I wish I had done so!

00:04:00.889 --> 00:04:03.490
But that was not decreed for me.

00:04:03.490 --> 00:04:09.289
Whenever I went out among the people after the departure of the Prophet (peace be upon him),

00:04:09.289 --> 00:04:11.889
it distressed me that I saw no one like me,

00:04:11.889 --> 00:04:15.889
except for a man suspected of hypocrisy

00:04:15.889 --> 00:04:19.689
or one of the weak whom Allah had excused.

00:04:19.689 --> 00:04:23.290
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not mention me

00:04:23.290 --> 00:04:25.290
until he reached Tabuk.

00:04:25.290 --> 00:04:28.689
While sitting among the people in Tabuk, he asked:

00:04:28.689 --> 00:04:31.089
"What has Ka'b ibn Malik done?"

00:04:31.089 --> 00:04:33.689
A man from Banu Salimah said:

00:04:33.689 --> 00:04:35.290
"O Messenger of Allah,

00:04:35.290 --> 00:04:39.089
his two fine garments and admiring his own shoulders have detained him!"

00:04:39.089 --> 00:04:42.490
Thereupon, Mu'adh ibn Jabal countered him, saying:

00:04:42.490 --> 00:04:44.089
"What an evil thing you have said!

00:04:44.089 --> 00:04:45.889
By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,

00:04:45.889 --> 00:04:49.180
we know nothing of him but good."

00:04:49.180 --> 00:04:51.579
While they were discussing that,

00:04:51.579 --> 00:04:55.180
he saw a man clad in white emerging through the mirage'—

00:04:55.180 --> 00:04:57.579
that is, approaching from afar.

00:04:57.579 --> 00:05:01.180
'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

00:05:01.180 --> 00:05:03.180
"Be Abu Khaythamah!"

00:05:03.180 --> 00:05:06.379
And indeed, it was Abu Khaythamah al-Ansari,

00:05:06.379 --> 00:05:08.779
the one who had donated a sa' of dates

00:05:08.779 --> 00:05:11.680
when the hypocrites mocked him.

00:05:11.680 --> 00:05:13.879
Ka'b ibn Malik said:

00:05:13.879 --> 00:05:18.279
"When news reached me that the Messenger of Allah was returning homeward,

00:05:18.279 --> 00:05:20.079
deep grief overcame me,

00:05:20.079 --> 00:05:22.680
and I began to conjure up falsehood,

00:05:22.680 --> 00:05:23.879
saying:

00:05:23.879 --> 00:05:26.680
'How can I escape his displeasure tomorrow?'

00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:30.879
and I sought the counsel of every wise person in my household.

00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:32.879
But when it was said to me

00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:35.879
that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:05:35.879 --> 00:05:37.879
was already approaching,

00:05:37.879 --> 00:05:40.079
all false thoughts vanished from me,

00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:43.879
and I realized that I would never be saved by lying.

00:05:43.879 --> 00:05:45.879
So I firmly resolved to speak the absolute truth to him.

00:05:45.879 --> 00:05:50.480
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) arrived in the morning,

00:05:50.480 --> 00:05:52.879
and it was his custom whenever he returned from a journey

00:05:52.879 --> 00:05:56.279
to begin by entering the mosque and praying two rak'ahs there,

00:05:56.279 --> 00:05:58.680
then he would sit with the people.

00:05:58.680 --> 00:06:01.480
When he had done that and sat down,

00:06:01.480 --> 00:06:04.480
those who had stayed behind—the hypocrites—came to him,

00:06:04.480 --> 00:06:08.279
presenting their excuses and swearing oaths to him;

00:06:08.279 --> 00:06:11.480
they were some eighty-odd men.

00:06:11.480 --> 00:06:15.079
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) accepted their outward professions,

00:06:15.079 --> 00:06:16.680
took their allegiance,

00:06:16.680 --> 00:06:19.279
and asked forgiveness for them,

00:06:19.279 --> 00:06:22.079
entrusting their inner secrets to Allah.

00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:23.680
Then I came forward;

00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:27.480
and when I greeted him, he smiled the smile of one who is angry.

00:06:27.480 --> 00:06:29.680
Then he said: 'Come forward.'

00:06:29.680 --> 00:06:33.079
So I approached, walking until I sat down before him.

00:06:33.079 --> 00:06:36.079
He asked me: 'What held you back?

00:06:36.079 --> 00:06:38.680
Had you not already purchased your mount?'

00:06:38.680 --> 00:06:40.680
I said: 'O Messenger of Allah!

00:06:40.680 --> 00:06:44.879
By Allah, if I were sitting before anyone else among the people of this world,

00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:48.480
I would know how to escape his anger with an excuse,

00:06:48.480 --> 00:06:50.879
for I have been gifted with skill in argument.

00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:52.680
But, by Allah,

00:06:52.680 --> 00:06:56.079
I know that if I tell you a falsehood today

00:06:56.079 --> 00:06:59.879
to win your pleasure with me, just as you were pleased with them,

00:06:59.879 --> 00:07:03.079
Allah will soon cause you to be angry with me.

00:07:03.079 --> 00:07:07.079
And if I speak to you the truth, though you will be displeased with me for it,

00:07:07.079 --> 00:07:10.339
I truly hope for Allah's pardon and a favorable outcome from Him.

00:07:10.339 --> 00:07:12.939
By Allah, I had no excuse;

00:07:12.939 --> 00:07:15.139
by Allah, I was never stronger

00:07:15.139 --> 00:07:18.740
nor more prosperous than when I stayed behind from you.'

00:07:18.740 --> 00:07:21.740
Thereupon, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

00:07:21.740 --> 00:07:24.339
'As for this man, he has spoken the truth.

00:07:24.339 --> 00:07:27.339
Stand up until Allah decides your case.'

00:07:27.339 --> 00:07:28.740
So I stood up,

00:07:28.740 --> 00:07:31.139
and men from Banu Salimah hastened after me,

00:07:31.139 --> 00:07:32.540
pursuing me

00:07:32.540 --> 00:07:34.139
and saying to me:

00:07:34.139 --> 00:07:38.540
'By Allah, we never knew you to have committed a sin before this!

00:07:38.540 --> 00:07:40.540
Were you truly unable

00:07:40.540 --> 00:07:43.939
to present an excuse to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:07:43.939 --> 00:07:46.540
similar to the excuses presented by those who stayed behind?

00:07:46.540 --> 00:07:48.540
For it would have been sufficient expiation for your sin

00:07:48.540 --> 00:07:53.069
that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) seek forgiveness for you.'

00:07:53.069 --> 00:07:54.670
Ka'b said:

00:07:54.670 --> 00:07:57.470
'By Allah, they continued to reprimand me

00:07:57.470 --> 00:08:01.870
until I was on the verge of returning to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:08:01.870 --> 00:08:03.670
to declare myself a liar.

00:08:03.670 --> 00:08:05.470
Then I asked them:

00:08:05.470 --> 00:08:08.269
"Has anyone else met with the same outcome as I have?"

00:08:08.269 --> 00:08:09.670
They said: "Yes,

00:08:09.670 --> 00:08:12.870
two men are in your situation; they said the same as you did,

00:08:12.870 --> 00:08:15.870
and the same was said to them as was said to you."

00:08:15.870 --> 00:08:17.670
I asked: "Who are they?"

00:08:17.670 --> 00:08:18.670
They said:

00:08:18.670 --> 00:08:20.470
"Murarah ibn al-Rabi'

00:08:20.470 --> 00:08:22.670
and Hilal ibn Umayyah."

00:08:22.670 --> 00:08:25.069
Thus they mentioned to me two righteous men

00:08:25.069 --> 00:08:26.870
in whom there was an exemplary model for me;

00:08:26.870 --> 00:08:29.670
so I held firm when they mentioned them to me.

00:08:29.670 --> 00:08:32.669
Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade

00:08:32.669 --> 00:08:34.870
the Muslims from speaking to us,

00:08:34.870 --> 00:08:37.070
so the people avoided us.

00:08:37.070 --> 00:08:39.470
And here lay the true trial,

00:08:39.470 --> 00:08:43.470
knowing that he did not forbid speaking to the hypocrites,

00:08:43.470 --> 00:08:47.870
even though the hypocrites had combined evil in three ways:

00:08:47.870 --> 00:08:49.269
first,

00:08:49.269 --> 00:08:50.870
like these men,

00:08:50.870 --> 00:08:53.269
they had stayed behind without an excuse;

00:08:53.269 --> 00:08:54.470
second,

00:08:54.470 --> 00:08:56.669
they were hypocrites;

00:08:56.669 --> 00:08:57.870
and third,

00:08:57.870 --> 00:09:02.269
they lied to the Prophet (peace be upon him).

00:09:02.269 --> 00:09:03.870
The scholars explained:

00:09:03.870 --> 00:09:05.870
social boycotting is a remedy,

00:09:05.870 --> 00:09:08.070
and a remedy benefits a believer,

00:09:08.070 --> 00:09:10.470
whereas it does not benefit a hypocrite;

00:09:10.470 --> 00:09:14.870
indeed, the sin of the hypocrite is too grave for boycotting to be of any avail.

00:09:14.870 --> 00:09:16.269
Ka'b said:

00:09:16.269 --> 00:09:18.070
"And the people's attitude toward us changed,

00:09:18.070 --> 00:09:21.269
to the point that the very earth seemed alien to me;

00:09:21.269 --> 00:09:24.070
it was no longer the land I used to know.

00:09:24.070 --> 00:09:27.470
We remained in that condition for fifty nights.

00:09:27.470 --> 00:09:29.269
As for my two companions,

00:09:29.269 --> 00:09:34.470
they resigned themselves, staying inside their homes and weeping over what had occurred.

00:09:34.470 --> 00:09:35.870
But as for me,

00:09:35.870 --> 00:09:38.870
I was the youngest and most resilient of the group;

00:09:38.870 --> 00:09:41.470
so I would go out, attend the congregational prayer,

00:09:41.470 --> 00:09:43.669
and walk through the marketplaces,

00:09:43.669 --> 00:09:46.070
and no one would speak to me.

00:09:46.070 --> 00:09:49.669
I would come to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),

00:09:49.669 --> 00:09:53.669
and greet him while he sat in his gathering after the prayer,

00:09:53.669 --> 00:09:54.870
and I would say to myself:

00:09:54.870 --> 00:09:58.070
"Did he move his lips to return the greeting or not?"

00:09:58.070 --> 00:10:00.070
Then I would pray close to him,

00:10:00.070 --> 00:10:02.269
and steal glances at him;

00:10:02.269 --> 00:10:04.470
whenever I turned to my prayer,

00:10:04.470 --> 00:10:06.070
he would look at me,

00:10:06.070 --> 00:10:09.269
but whenever I turned toward him, he would look away from me.

00:10:09.269 --> 00:10:11.870
When this prolonged estrangement became unbearable for me,

00:10:11.870 --> 00:10:16.470
I walked until I climbed over the wall of the orchard of Abu Qatadah,

00:10:16.470 --> 00:10:19.669
who was my cousin and the dearest of all people to me.

00:10:19.669 --> 00:10:21.269
I greeted him with peace,

00:10:21.269 --> 00:10:24.470
but by Allah, he did not return my greeting.

00:10:24.470 --> 00:10:25.870
So I said to him:

00:10:25.870 --> 00:10:27.669
"O Abu Qatadah,

00:10:27.669 --> 00:10:29.470
I implore you by Allah,

00:10:29.470 --> 00:10:33.070
do you know that I love Allah and His Messenger?"

00:10:33.070 --> 00:10:33.870
He said:

00:10:33.870 --> 00:10:35.269
But he remained silent.

00:10:35.269 --> 00:10:38.070
I repeated my plea to him, and he still remained silent.

00:10:38.070 --> 00:10:41.070
I pleaded with him once more, and he replied:

00:10:41.070 --> 00:10:43.870
"Allah and His Messenger know best."

00:10:43.870 --> 00:10:45.669
Thereupon my eyes overflowed with tears,

00:10:45.669 --> 00:10:49.539
and I turned back and climbed over the wall.

00:10:49.539 --> 00:10:50.740
He said:

00:10:50.740 --> 00:10:54.139
While I was walking through the market of Madinah,

00:10:54.139 --> 00:10:57.340
suddenly a Nabataean Christian from the people of the Levant,

00:10:57.340 --> 00:11:01.139
among those who had brought food grains to sell in Madinah,

00:11:01.139 --> 00:11:02.340
was saying:

00:11:02.340 --> 00:11:05.139
"Who will direct me to Ka'b ibn Malik?"

00:11:05.139 --> 00:11:06.340
He said:

00:11:06.340 --> 00:11:08.940
The people began pointing toward me,

00:11:08.940 --> 00:11:10.740
until he came up to me

00:11:10.740 --> 00:11:14.139
and handed me a letter from the King of Ghassan.

00:11:14.139 --> 00:11:15.940
I was a literate man,

00:11:15.940 --> 00:11:18.340
so I read it, and it said:

00:11:18.340 --> 00:11:19.740
"To proceed:

00:11:19.740 --> 00:11:23.740
It has reached us that your companion has shunned you,

00:11:23.740 --> 00:11:27.740
yet Allah has not placed you in a home of humiliation or neglect,

00:11:27.740 --> 00:11:29.940
so join us, and we will console and honor you."

00:11:29.940 --> 00:11:30.940
He said:

00:11:30.940 --> 00:11:33.139
When I read it, I said:

00:11:33.139 --> 00:11:35.740
"This too is part of the trial!"

00:11:35.740 --> 00:11:37.940
So I went with it straight to the oven

00:11:37.940 --> 00:11:39.740
and burned it to ashes.

00:11:39.740 --> 00:11:43.740
This demonstrates the virtue of hastening to destroy anything that is feared to cause

00:11:43.740 --> 00:11:46.539
corruption and harm to one’s religious commitment.

00:11:46.539 --> 00:11:49.740
Thus, whoever possesses indecent videos,

00:11:49.740 --> 00:11:52.740
pictures, illicit websites on the internet,

00:11:52.740 --> 00:11:54.139
or anything of the sort,

00:11:54.139 --> 00:11:56.940
must get rid of them once they repent,

00:11:56.940 --> 00:11:58.740
so that they do not return to them

00:11:58.740 --> 00:12:02.139
whenever their soul and Satan tempt them.

00:12:02.139 --> 00:12:03.539
Ka'b said:

00:12:03.539 --> 00:12:06.940
When forty out of the fifty nights had passed,

00:12:06.940 --> 00:12:08.740
and the revelation was delayed,

00:12:08.740 --> 00:12:12.340
suddenly the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:12:12.340 --> 00:12:14.740
came to me and said:

00:12:14.740 --> 00:12:17.539
"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:12:18.539 --> 00:12:21.539
orders you to separate from your wife."

00:12:21.539 --> 00:12:22.539
He said:

00:12:22.539 --> 00:12:23.539
I asked:

00:12:23.539 --> 00:12:26.539
"Should I divorce her, or what should I do?"

00:12:26.539 --> 00:12:27.539
He said: "No,

00:12:27.539 --> 00:12:28.539
rather stay away from her

00:12:28.539 --> 00:12:30.539
and do not approach her."

00:12:30.539 --> 00:12:31.539
He said:

00:12:31.539 --> 00:12:35.539
And he sent the same instruction to my two companions.

00:12:35.539 --> 00:12:36.539
So I said to my wife:

00:12:36.539 --> 00:12:38.539
"Go to your family

00:12:38.539 --> 00:12:43.539
and stay with them until Allah decrees a judgment in this matter."

00:12:43.539 --> 00:12:48.539
Then the wife of Hilal ibn Umayyah came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:12:48.539 --> 00:12:51.539
and said to him: "O Messenger of Allah,

00:12:51.539 --> 00:12:54.539
Hilal ibn Umayyah is an old, helpless man

00:12:54.539 --> 00:12:56.539
who has no servant;

00:12:56.539 --> 00:12:58.539
do you dislike that I should serve him?"

00:12:58.539 --> 00:12:59.539
He replied: "No,

00:12:59.539 --> 00:13:02.539
but let him not approach you."

00:13:02.539 --> 00:13:03.539
She said:

00:13:03.539 --> 00:13:07.539
"By Allah, he has no inclination toward anything,

00:13:07.539 --> 00:13:12.629
and by Allah, he has not ceased weeping ever since this ordeal began."

00:13:12.629 --> 00:13:13.629
Ka'b said:

00:13:13.629 --> 00:13:15.629
Some of my family members said to me:

00:13:15.629 --> 00:13:20.629
"Why do you not ask permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) regarding your wife,

00:13:20.629 --> 00:13:24.629
as he has permitted the wife of Hilal ibn Umayyah to serve him?"

00:13:24.629 --> 00:13:25.629
He said:

00:13:25.629 --> 00:13:26.629
I replied:

00:13:26.629 --> 00:13:31.629
"I will not ask permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) regarding her,

00:13:31.629 --> 00:13:36.629
for what would I know of what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) might say

00:13:36.629 --> 00:13:38.629
if I were to ask his permission concerning her,

00:13:38.629 --> 00:13:40.629
seeing that I am a young man?"

00:13:40.629 --> 00:13:43.730
So I remained in that state for ten more nights,

00:13:43.730 --> 00:13:45.730
thus completing the fifty nights.

00:13:45.730 --> 00:13:50.730
Fifty full nights had passed for us since people were forbidden from speaking to us.

00:13:50.730 --> 00:13:51.789
He said:

00:13:51.789 --> 00:13:55.789
Then, on the morning of the fiftieth night, I prayed the Fajr prayer

00:13:55.789 --> 00:13:58.789
on the roof of one of our houses.

00:13:58.789 --> 00:14:04.789
While I was sitting in that condition which Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, mentioned of us,

00:14:04.789 --> 00:14:06.789
where my own soul felt constricted to me,

00:14:06.789 --> 00:14:09.789
and the earth, vast as it is, seemed constrained upon me,

00:14:09.789 --> 00:14:12.789
I heard the voice of a herald who had climbed atop Mount Sal'

00:14:12.789 --> 00:14:14.789
shouting at the top of his voice:

00:14:14.789 --> 00:14:16.789
"O Ka'b ibn Malik,

00:14:16.789 --> 00:14:17.789
rejoice with glad tidings!"

00:14:17.789 --> 00:14:19.789
I immediately fell down in prostration,

00:14:19.789 --> 00:14:22.789
realizing that relief had finally come.

00:14:22.789 --> 00:14:27.789
This indicates that when a person receives joyful news,

00:14:27.789 --> 00:14:30.789
they should prostrate to Allah in gratitude.

00:14:30.789 --> 00:14:31.789
He said:

00:14:31.789 --> 00:14:37.789
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had announced Allah's acceptance of our repentance to the people

00:14:37.789 --> 00:14:39.789
when he performed the Fajr prayer,

00:14:39.789 --> 00:14:42.789
so the people set out to give us the glad tidings.

00:14:42.789 --> 00:14:45.789
Bearers of glad tidings went toward my two companions,

00:14:45.789 --> 00:14:48.789
while a horseman galloped toward me,

00:14:48.789 --> 00:14:52.789
and an envoy from the tribe of Aslam ran toward me and climbed the mountain;

00:14:52.789 --> 00:14:55.789
his voice proved faster than the horse.

00:14:55.789 --> 00:14:59.789
When the one whose voice I had heard giving me the glad tidings came to me,

00:14:59.789 --> 00:15:01.789
I took off my two garments

00:15:01.789 --> 00:15:04.789
and clothed him with them as a reward for his good news.

00:15:05.789 --> 00:15:08.789
By Allah, I possessed no other clothes than them on that day.

00:15:08.789 --> 00:15:11.789
So I borrowed two garments, put them on,

00:15:11.789 --> 00:15:16.789
and set out heading toward the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

00:15:16.789 --> 00:15:22.860
This demonstrates to us the extent of their love for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him);

00:15:22.860 --> 00:15:24.860
for although he was the one who commanded the boycott,

00:15:24.860 --> 00:15:26.860
he was the very first person Ka'b went to.

00:15:26.860 --> 00:15:27.919
He said:

00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:30.919
The people were meeting me group after group,

00:15:30.919 --> 00:15:33.919
congratulating me on the acceptance of my repentance, saying:

00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:36.919
"May Allah’s acceptance of your repentance bring you joy!"

00:15:36.919 --> 00:15:38.919
until I entered the mosque.

00:15:38.919 --> 00:15:41.919
There I found the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:15:41.919 --> 00:15:45.919
sitting in the mosque surrounded by the people.

00:15:45.919 --> 00:15:48.919
Then Talhah ibn 'Ubaydullah stood up and hastened toward me

00:15:48.919 --> 00:15:51.919
until he shook my hand and congratulated me.

00:15:51.919 --> 00:15:55.919
By Allah, no other man from the Muhajirun stood up for me besides him,

00:15:55.919 --> 00:15:58.919
and Ka'b never forgot that gesture of Talhah.

00:15:58.919 --> 00:16:02.919
When I greeted the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),

00:16:02.919 --> 00:16:05.919
he said, his face beaming with joy:

00:16:05.919 --> 00:16:10.919
"Rejoice in the best day that has passed over you since your mother gave birth to you!"

00:16:10.919 --> 00:16:14.919
I asked: "Is it from you, O Messenger of Allah,

00:16:14.919 --> 00:16:16.919
or is it from Allah?"

00:16:16.919 --> 00:16:17.919
He replied: "No,

00:16:17.919 --> 00:16:19.919
rather it is from Allah."

00:16:19.919 --> 00:16:22.919
Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:16:22.919 --> 00:16:25.919
was pleased, his face would become luminous,

00:16:25.919 --> 00:16:28.919
as if it were a piece of the moon,

00:16:28.919 --> 00:16:30.919
and we used to recognize that in him.

00:16:30.919 --> 00:16:33.950
When I sat before him,

00:16:33.950 --> 00:16:35.950
I said: "O Messenger of Allah,

00:16:35.950 --> 00:16:37.950
as part of my repentance,

00:16:37.950 --> 00:16:41.950
I divest myself of all my wealth as charity for the sake of Allah and His Messenger."

00:16:41.950 --> 00:16:44.950
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

00:16:44.950 --> 00:16:46.950
"Keep some of your wealth,

00:16:46.950 --> 00:16:48.950
for that is better for you."

00:16:48.950 --> 00:16:49.950
He said:

00:16:49.950 --> 00:16:54.139
"Then I will retain only my share in Khaybar."

00:16:54.139 --> 00:16:55.139
He said:

00:16:55.139 --> 00:16:57.139
I said: "O Messenger of Allah,

00:16:57.139 --> 00:17:00.139
Allah has saved me only because of truthfulness,

00:17:00.139 --> 00:17:02.139
and part of my repentance is

00:17:02.139 --> 00:17:05.140
that I shall speak nothing but the truth for as long as I live."

00:17:05.140 --> 00:17:06.180
He said:

00:17:06.180 --> 00:17:12.180
By Allah, I do not know of any Muslim whom Allah tested in truthfulness of speech,

00:17:12.180 --> 00:17:16.180
since the day I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:17:16.180 --> 00:17:18.180
until this day of mine,

00:17:18.180 --> 00:17:21.180
in a manner better than what Allah tested me with.

00:17:21.180 --> 00:17:24.180
By Allah, I have never intentionally uttered a lie

00:17:24.180 --> 00:17:28.180
since I said that to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:17:28.180 --> 00:17:30.180
until this day of mine,

00:17:30.180 --> 00:17:34.180
and I truly hope that Allah will preserve me in what remains of my life.

00:17:34.180 --> 00:17:35.210
He said:

00:17:35.210 --> 00:17:38.210
Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed:

00:17:38.210 --> 00:17:49.210
“Allah hath turned in mercy to the Prophet, and to the Muhajirin and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of hardship. After the hearts of a party of them had almost swerved aside, then turned He unto them in mercy. Lo! He is Full of Pity, Merciful for them.” (9:117)

00:17:49.210 --> 00:17:56.210

00:17:56.210 --> 00:18:04.210
"Then He turned to them in forgiveness; indeed, He is to them Kind and Merciful,"

00:18:04.210 --> 00:18:08.210
"and to the three who were left behind..."

00:18:08.210 --> 00:18:20.210
“And to the three also (did He turn in mercy) who were left behind, when the earth, vast as it is, was straitened for them, and their own souls were straitened for them till they bethought them that there is no refuge from Allah save toward Him. Then turned He unto them in mercy that they (too) might turn (repentant unto Him). Lo! Allah! He is the Relenting, the Merciful.” (9:118)

00:18:20.210 --> 00:18:25.210
"...and they realized that there is no refuge from Allah except in Him..."

00:18:25.210 --> 00:18:30.210

00:18:30.210 --> 00:18:35.210
"...Indeed, Allah is the Accepter of Repentance, the Merciful."

00:18:35.210 --> 00:18:39.369
By Allah, Allah has never bestowed upon me any blessing,

00:18:39.369 --> 00:18:42.369
after guiding me to Islam,

00:18:42.369 --> 00:18:47.369
greater in my estimation than my truthfulness with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),

00:18:47.369 --> 00:18:52.369
that I did not lie to him and thus perish as those who lied perished.

00:18:52.369 --> 00:18:57.369
For Allah, the Exalted, said concerning those who lied when the revelation descended:

00:18:57.369 --> 00:19:04.369
“They will swear by Allah unto you, when ye return unto them, that ye may let them be. Let them be, for lo! they are unclean, and their abode is hell as the reward for what they used to earn.” (9:95)

00:19:04.369 --> 00:19:08.369
“They will swear by Allah unto you, when ye return unto them, that ye may let them be. Let them be, for lo! they are unclean, and their abode is hell as the reward for what they used to earn.” (9:95)

00:19:08.369 --> 00:19:15.369
“They will swear by Allah unto you, when ye return unto them, that ye may let them be. Let them be, for lo! they are unclean, and their abode is hell as the reward for what they used to earn.” (9:95)

00:19:16.369 --> 00:19:20.369
“They swear unto you, that ye may accept them. Though ye accept them. Allah verily accepteth not wrongdoing folk.” (9:96)

00:19:20.369 --> 00:19:28.369
“They swear unto you, that ye may accept them. Though ye accept them. Allah verily accepteth not wrongdoing folk.” (9:96)

00:19:28.369 --> 00:19:33.529
Imagine Ka'b reciting these verses now in his prayer,

00:19:33.529 --> 00:19:37.529
knowing that Allah is speaking about him and his companions,

00:19:37.529 --> 00:19:42.529
and reciting as well what Allah revealed about the hypocrites who lied,

00:19:42.529 --> 00:19:45.529
and how Allah protected him from lying.

00:19:45.529 --> 00:19:48.559
By Allah, how profound must his feelings have been!

00:19:48.559 --> 00:19:51.559
It was undeniably an indescribable happiness,

00:19:51.559 --> 00:19:55.559
indeed just as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

00:19:55.559 --> 00:20:00.559
"Rejoice in the best day that has passed over you since your mother gave birth to you!"

00:20:00.559 --> 00:20:02.619
Ka'b said:

00:20:02.619 --> 00:20:04.619
"The matter of us three was deferred

00:20:04.619 --> 00:20:11.619
from the affair of those whose excuses the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) accepted when they swore to him,

00:20:11.619 --> 00:20:14.619
pledged allegiance to them, and sought forgiveness for them;

00:20:14.619 --> 00:20:18.619
whereas the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) postponed our matter

00:20:18.619 --> 00:20:20.619
until Allah decreed His judgment concerning it.

00:20:20.619 --> 00:20:23.619
It is in reference to this that Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, said:

00:20:23.619 --> 00:20:26.619

00:20:26.619 --> 00:20:31.619
And what Allah mentioned regarding our having been left behind does not refer to our lagging behind from the battle;

00:20:32.619 --> 00:20:35.619
rather, it refers to His postponing the decision regarding our case.

00:20:35.619 --> 00:20:39.170
