in kindness to the Arabs 00:01:13.340 --> 00:01:15.340 during the Jahiliyyah, 00:01:15.340 --> 00:01:17.340 and the most sincere in devotion to Allah 00:01:17.340 --> 00:01:19.340 and His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:01:19.340 --> 00:01:21.400 in Islam. 00:01:21.400 --> 00:01:23.400 That is the beloved martyr and Companion, 00:01:23.400 --> 00:01:25.400 Anas ibn al-Nadr al-Ansari. 00:01:25.400 --> 00:01:27.400 And it is enough for Anas ibn al-Nadr 00:01:27.400 --> 00:01:29.400 in terms of glory, honor, 00:01:29.400 --> 00:01:31.400 and pride 00:01:31.400 --> 00:01:33.400 that a noble hadith was revealed concerning him, 00:01:33.400 --> 00:01:35.400 narrated by the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhari 00:01:35.400 --> 00:01:37.400 and Muslim, 00:01:37.400 --> 00:01:39.400 and that a noble Qur'anic verse was revealed concerning him, 00:01:39.400 --> 00:01:41.400 which the believers will recite until 00:01:41.400 --> 00:01:43.400 Allah inherits the earth and whoever is upon it, 00:01:43.400 --> 00:01:45.400 and which the devout will pray with 00:01:45.400 --> 00:01:47.400 in the hours of the night 00:01:47.400 --> 00:01:49.400 and at the edges of the day. 00:01:49.400 --> 00:01:51.400 Is there any pride after this pride 00:01:51.400 --> 00:01:53.400 that the necks of the ambitious might reach for, 00:01:53.400 --> 00:01:55.400 or that the hearts 00:01:55.400 --> 00:01:57.400 of the hopeful might yearn for? 00:01:57.400 --> 00:01:59.400 And is there, above this nobility, 00:01:59.400 --> 00:02:01.400 a nobility that the noble seek to attain? 00:02:01.400 --> 00:02:03.620 The hadith that 00:02:03.620 --> 00:02:05.620 was narrated regarding Anas ibn al-Nadr 00:02:05.620 --> 00:02:07.620 is a story among the most wonderful of stories, 00:02:07.620 --> 00:02:09.620 and the Qur'an that 00:02:09.620 --> 00:02:11.620 was revealed regarding him has a story 00:02:11.620 --> 00:02:13.620 that surpasses the previous one. 00:02:13.620 --> 00:02:15.719 As for the story of the hadith, 00:02:15.719 --> 00:02:17.719 it is that 00:02:17.719 --> 00:02:19.719 Anas ibn al-Nadr had a sister 00:02:19.719 --> 00:02:21.719 of great stature among the women 00:02:21.719 --> 00:02:23.719 of the Arabs, of esteemed 00:02:23.719 --> 00:02:25.719 status among her people, 00:02:25.719 --> 00:02:27.719 and she was al-Rubayyi' bint al-Nadr, 00:02:27.719 --> 00:02:29.719 known as Umm Harithah. 00:02:29.719 --> 00:02:31.719 This Umm Harithah 00:02:31.719 --> 00:02:33.719 had a son in 00:02:33.719 --> 00:02:35.719 the prime of his youth and the bloom of his life, 00:02:35.719 --> 00:02:37.719 who had attained perfection in intellect, 00:02:37.719 --> 00:02:39.719 sweetness in character, 00:02:39.719 --> 00:02:41.750 and loftiness in conduct and faith. 00:02:41.750 --> 00:02:43.750 The noble Messenger, 00:02:43.750 --> 00:02:45.750 may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, 00:02:45.750 --> 00:02:47.750 saw him shortly before Badr, 00:02:47.750 --> 00:02:49.750 and he looked at him with tenderness and kindness 00:02:49.750 --> 00:02:51.750 and said to him, 00:02:51.750 --> 00:02:53.750 "How are you, O Harithah?" 00:02:53.750 --> 00:02:55.750 He replied, "I am a believer 00:02:55.750 --> 00:02:57.819 in Allah, truly." 00:02:57.819 --> 00:02:59.819 So he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:02:59.819 --> 00:03:01.819 said to him, "Consider 00:03:01.819 --> 00:03:03.819 what you say, O Harithah, 00:03:03.819 --> 00:03:05.819 for every statement has a reality." 00:03:05.819 --> 00:03:07.819 He said, 00:03:07.819 --> 00:03:09.819 "O Messenger of Allah, 00:03:09.819 --> 00:03:11.819 my soul has turned away from the world, 00:03:11.819 --> 00:03:13.819 so I have kept my nights awake in prayer, 00:03:13.819 --> 00:03:15.819 and I have made my days thirsty 00:03:15.819 --> 00:03:17.819 through fasting, 00:03:17.819 --> 00:03:19.819 and it is as if I am looking at the people of the Fire 00:03:19.819 --> 00:03:21.819 burning in its flames, 00:03:21.819 --> 00:03:23.819 and crying out in its hell." 00:03:23.819 --> 00:03:25.819 Then he said, 00:03:25.819 --> 00:03:27.819 "Pray for my martyrdom, O Messenger of Allah." 00:03:27.819 --> 00:03:29.819 So the noble Prophet, 00:03:29.819 --> 00:03:31.819 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:03:31.819 --> 00:03:33.879 prayed for him for that. 00:03:33.879 --> 00:03:35.879 Not long after that meeting 00:03:35.879 --> 00:03:37.879 between the Messenger, may the prayers 00:03:37.879 --> 00:03:39.879 and peace of Allah be upon him, 00:03:39.879 --> 00:03:41.879 and the young man, 00:03:41.879 --> 00:03:43.879 did Badr occur, 00:03:43.879 --> 00:03:45.879 and the call to arms was made. 00:03:45.879 --> 00:03:47.879 Harithah was the first horseman 00:03:47.879 --> 00:03:49.879 to mount his steed, 00:03:49.879 --> 00:03:51.879 and he was martyred. 00:03:51.879 --> 00:03:53.879 His mother, the elderly, 00:03:53.879 --> 00:03:55.879 bereaved woman, grieved for him deeply, 00:03:55.879 --> 00:03:57.879 and she came to the Messenger of Allah, 00:03:57.879 --> 00:03:59.879 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:03:59.879 --> 00:04:01.879 and said, "If Harithah is 00:04:01.879 --> 00:04:03.879 in Paradise, I will not weep 00:04:03.879 --> 00:04:05.879 for his loss nor grieve for his bereavement, 00:04:05.879 --> 00:04:07.879 but if he is in the Fire, 00:04:07.879 --> 00:04:09.879 I will weep for him as long as 00:04:09.879 --> 00:04:11.879 I have eyes that shed tears 00:04:11.879 --> 00:04:13.879 and a heart that burns." 00:04:13.879 --> 00:04:15.939 The noble Messenger, 00:04:15.939 --> 00:04:17.939 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to her, 00:04:18.939 --> 00:04:20.939 "It is not just one Paradise, 00:04:20.939 --> 00:04:22.939 O Umm Harithah, 00:04:22.939 --> 00:04:24.939 but it is many gardens, 00:04:24.939 --> 00:04:26.939 and Harithah is in the highest 00:04:26.939 --> 00:04:28.939 Firdaws." 00:04:28.939 --> 00:04:30.939 The dignified, bereaved 00:04:30.939 --> 00:04:32.939 old woman returned to her home, 00:04:32.939 --> 00:04:34.939 and she began to wipe away her tears, 00:04:34.939 --> 00:04:36.939 suppress her anguish, 00:04:36.939 --> 00:04:38.939 console herself, 00:04:38.939 --> 00:04:40.939 and find comfort in the condolences 00:04:40.939 --> 00:04:42.939 of the people. 00:04:42.939 --> 00:04:45.199 While the noble lady 00:04:45.199 --> 00:04:47.199 from the Ansar was tasting 00:04:47.199 --> 00:04:49.199 the bitterness of suffering 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:51.199 as she was, 00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:53.199 and enduring the agitation of emotions 00:04:53.199 --> 00:04:55.199 as she was, 00:04:55.199 --> 00:04:57.199 she was provoked by a slave girl 00:04:57.199 --> 00:04:59.199 belonging to a group of the people of Yathrib, 00:04:59.199 --> 00:05:01.199 and she could not help 00:05:01.199 --> 00:05:03.199 but strike her a blow 00:05:03.199 --> 00:05:05.199 that broke her front tooth. 00:05:05.199 --> 00:05:07.300 Then she regretted what she had done 00:05:07.300 --> 00:05:09.300 with the deepest regret. 00:05:09.300 --> 00:05:11.300 Her brother, 00:05:11.300 --> 00:05:13.300 Anas ibn al-Nadr, approached the girl's family, 00:05:13.300 --> 00:05:15.300 offering them the blood money. 00:05:15.300 --> 00:05:17.300 The notables of the people rose to them, 00:05:17.300 --> 00:05:19.300 hoping they would pardon her, 00:05:19.300 --> 00:05:21.300 but they refused them 00:05:21.300 --> 00:05:23.300 and insisted on complaining about her 00:05:23.300 --> 00:05:25.300 to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:05:25.300 --> 00:05:27.300 When they complained to him, 00:05:27.300 --> 00:05:29.300 he ruled for retaliation against her, 00:05:29.300 --> 00:05:31.300 in implementation of the law of Allah 00:05:31.300 --> 00:05:33.300 and to ensure equality among the Muslims. 00:05:33.300 --> 00:05:35.300 Her brother, 00:05:35.300 --> 00:05:37.300 Anas, was stunned when he heard this and said, 00:05:37.300 --> 00:05:39.300 "Will the front tooth of Umm Harithah be broken, 00:05:39.300 --> 00:05:41.300 O Messenger of Allah? 00:05:41.300 --> 00:05:43.300 By the One who sent you with the truth, it shall not be broken!" 00:05:43.300 --> 00:05:45.360 The Messenger, 00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:47.360 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him, 00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:49.360 "O Anas, 00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:51.360 it is the Book of Allah 00:05:51.360 --> 00:05:53.360 that decrees this." 00:05:53.360 --> 00:05:55.360 Before Anas could utter another word, 00:05:55.360 --> 00:05:57.360 the noble Messenger, 00:05:57.360 --> 00:05:59.360 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:05:59.360 --> 00:06:01.360 looked at the girl's family, 00:06:01.360 --> 00:06:03.360 who were rigid and insistent, 00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:05.360 and they became softer than carded wool 00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:07.360 and smoother 00:06:07.360 --> 00:06:09.360 than soft silk, 00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:11.360 as if 00:06:11.360 --> 00:06:13.360 something hidden was pushing them 00:06:13.360 --> 00:06:15.360 away from what they had been upon. 00:06:15.360 --> 00:06:17.360 They turned to the Prophet, 00:06:17.360 --> 00:06:19.360 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:21.360 saying, 00:06:21.360 --> 00:06:23.360 "Yes, do not break her front tooth, 00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:25.360 O Messenger of Allah! 00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:27.360 Yes, do not break it! 00:06:27.360 --> 00:06:29.360 We have pardoned her, O Messenger of Allah, 00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:31.360 we have pardoned her, 00:06:31.360 --> 00:06:33.360 O most noble of the Prophets of Allah." 00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:35.360 So the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah 00:06:35.360 --> 00:06:37.360 be upon him, 00:06:37.360 --> 00:06:39.360 looked at Anas ibn al-Nadr kindly 00:06:39.360 --> 00:06:41.360 and said, "Indeed, among the servants of Allah 00:06:41.360 --> 00:06:43.360 are those who, if they were to swear 00:06:43.360 --> 00:06:45.420 by Allah, He would fulfill it." 00:06:45.420 --> 00:06:47.420 That is the story of the hadith 00:06:47.420 --> 00:06:49.420 that was narrated regarding Anas ibn al-Nadr. 00:06:49.420 --> 00:06:51.420 As for the noble Qur'an 00:06:51.420 --> 00:06:53.420 that was revealed concerning him, it has 00:06:53.420 --> 00:06:55.519 another matter. That is 00:06:55.519 --> 00:06:57.519 that he missed Badr 00:06:57.519 --> 00:06:59.519 for a reason that was not in his power 00:06:59.519 --> 00:07:01.519 to prevent, so it weighed heavily 00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:03.519 upon him that he did not witness with the Messenger, 00:07:03.519 --> 00:07:05.519 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:07.519 the first of the days of Allah, 00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:09.519 and this matter troubled him 00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:11.519 and grieved him, 00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:13.519 He began to reproach himself, saying, 00:07:13.519 --> 00:07:15.519 "Woe to you, Anas! 00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:17.519 How could you be absent from the first battle 00:07:17.519 --> 00:07:19.519 that the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:21.579 witnessed?" 00:07:21.579 --> 00:07:23.579 "Can you guarantee that you will live long enough 00:07:23.579 --> 00:07:25.579 to witness another day 00:07:25.579 --> 00:07:27.579 with the Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:07:27.579 --> 00:07:29.579 that equals Badr 00:07:29.579 --> 00:07:31.579 in merit and reward?" 00:07:31.579 --> 00:07:33.579 "By Allah, if my Lord honors me 00:07:33.579 --> 00:07:35.579 with a day where I encounter the polytheists, 00:07:35.579 --> 00:07:37.579 they shall see what I do." 00:07:37.579 --> 00:07:39.740 Anas, 00:07:39.740 --> 00:07:41.740 may Allah be pleased with him, 00:07:41.740 --> 00:07:43.740 intended to say more, 00:07:43.740 --> 00:07:45.740 but he was too awestruck to do so, 00:07:45.740 --> 00:07:47.970 and he remained silent. 00:07:47.970 --> 00:07:49.970 Not long after the vow 00:07:49.970 --> 00:07:51.970 that Anas Ibn al-Nadr had made to himself, 00:07:51.970 --> 00:07:53.970 the battle of 00:07:53.970 --> 00:07:55.970 Uhud took place— 00:07:55.970 --> 00:07:57.970 a day of testing for the Muslims, 00:07:57.970 --> 00:07:59.970 in which Allah purified 00:07:59.970 --> 00:08:01.970 the hearts of the sincere believers 00:08:01.970 --> 00:08:03.970 and brought forth on its fields 00:08:03.970 --> 00:08:05.970 the noble, blessed heroes, 00:08:05.970 --> 00:08:07.970 those who sought martyrdom 00:08:07.970 --> 00:08:09.970 and were destined for the highest gardens of Paradise. 00:08:09.970 --> 00:08:11.970 The Messenger, 00:08:11.970 --> 00:08:13.970 may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:08:13.970 --> 00:08:15.970 endured great hardship and harm therein; 00:08:15.970 --> 00:08:17.970 he was pelted with stones, 00:08:17.970 --> 00:08:19.970 cast into a pit, 00:08:19.970 --> 00:08:21.970 his face was wounded, 00:08:21.970 --> 00:08:23.970 his lips were cut, and his blood flowed. 00:08:23.970 --> 00:08:25.970 The alarmists spread the rumor 00:08:25.970 --> 00:08:27.970 that he had been killed, 00:08:27.970 --> 00:08:29.970 and most of the Muslims 00:08:29.970 --> 00:08:31.970 and the mujahidin with him believed what was broadcast 00:08:31.970 --> 00:08:33.970 at that moment. 00:08:33.970 --> 00:08:35.970 Anas Ibn al-Nadr realized 00:08:35.970 --> 00:08:37.970 that the opportunity had arrived 00:08:37.970 --> 00:08:39.970 to fulfill what he had 00:08:39.970 --> 00:08:41.970 vowed to Allah, the Almighty. 00:08:41.970 --> 00:08:44.029 He looked out onto the battlefield 00:08:44.029 --> 00:08:46.029 and saw the Muslims 00:08:46.029 --> 00:08:48.029 having retreated from 00:08:48.029 --> 00:08:50.029 the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:08:50.029 --> 00:08:52.029 while the polytheists 00:08:52.029 --> 00:08:54.029 surrounded him, 00:08:54.029 --> 00:08:56.029 intent on killing him 00:08:56.029 --> 00:08:58.029 and extinguishing the light of Allah 00:08:58.029 --> 00:09:00.100 with the edge of their swords. 00:09:00.100 --> 00:09:02.100 He said, 00:09:02.100 --> 00:09:04.100 "O Allah, I apologize to You 00:09:04.100 --> 00:09:06.100 for what these have done," 00:09:06.100 --> 00:09:08.100 meaning the Muslims fleeing 00:09:08.100 --> 00:09:10.100 from the battlefield, 00:09:10.100 --> 00:09:12.100 "and I disavow before You what these have done," 00:09:12.100 --> 00:09:14.100 meaning the attacking polytheists. 00:09:14.100 --> 00:09:16.129 Then he encountered 00:09:16.129 --> 00:09:18.129 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab nearby, 00:09:18.129 --> 00:09:20.129 who was agitated and anxious. 00:09:20.129 --> 00:09:22.129 He turned to him and asked, 00:09:22.129 --> 00:09:24.129 "What has the Messenger of Allah done, O 'Umar?" 00:09:24.129 --> 00:09:26.129 He replied, 00:09:26.129 --> 00:09:28.129 "I fear he has been killed." 00:09:28.129 --> 00:09:30.129 Anas said, 00:09:30.129 --> 00:09:32.129 "If Muhammad has died, 00:09:32.129 --> 00:09:34.129 then Allah is Ever-Living and does not die." 00:09:34.129 --> 00:09:36.129 Then he drew his sword, 00:09:36.129 --> 00:09:38.129 broke its scabbard, 00:09:38.129 --> 00:09:40.129 and threw himself into the thick of 00:09:40.129 --> 00:09:42.129 the battle, without doubt 00:09:42.129 --> 00:09:44.129 or fear. 00:09:44.129 --> 00:09:46.129 While he was rushing to meet 00:09:46.129 --> 00:09:48.129 the polytheists, he saw 00:09:48.129 --> 00:09:50.129 Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh nearby. 00:09:50.129 --> 00:09:52.129 He turned to him and said, 00:09:52.129 --> 00:09:54.129 "Paradise, O Sa'd! 00:09:54.129 --> 00:09:56.129 Paradise, by the Lord of al-Nadr! 00:09:56.129 --> 00:09:58.129 I can smell its fragrance from before 00:09:58.129 --> 00:10:00.129 Uhud." Then he went forth, 00:10:00.129 --> 00:10:02.129 looking back at nothing. 00:10:02.129 --> 00:10:04.129 Sa'd said, 00:10:04.129 --> 00:10:06.129 "I intended to follow him, 00:10:06.129 --> 00:10:08.129 to walk his path and do 00:10:08.129 --> 00:10:10.129 as he did, but 00:10:10.129 --> 00:10:12.129 I could not resolve to do what he 00:10:12.129 --> 00:10:14.129 resolved, nor could I do 00:10:14.129 --> 00:10:16.259 what he did." Then the battle cleared, 00:10:16.259 --> 00:10:18.259 and behold, 00:10:18.259 --> 00:10:20.259 Anas Ibn al-Nadr lay 00:10:20.259 --> 00:10:22.259 a martyr on the soil of Uhud, 00:10:22.259 --> 00:10:24.259 having sustained over eighty 00:10:24.259 --> 00:10:26.259 sword strikes, 00:10:26.259 --> 00:10:28.259 spear thrusts, 00:10:28.259 --> 00:10:30.259 or arrow shots. 00:10:30.259 --> 00:10:32.259 The malice of the polytheists toward him 00:10:32.259 --> 00:10:34.259 was such that they mutilated his body 00:10:34.259 --> 00:10:36.259 after he had died, 00:10:36.259 --> 00:10:38.259 leaving him unrecognizable, 00:10:38.259 --> 00:10:40.259 so that no one knew him 00:10:40.259 --> 00:10:42.259 except his sister, Umm Harithah, 00:10:42.259 --> 00:10:44.259 who recognized him only by his fingertips. 00:10:44.259 --> 00:10:46.580 Allah honored 00:10:46.580 --> 00:10:48.580 Anas Ibn al-Nadr al-Najjari, 00:10:48.580 --> 00:10:50.580 for He revealed a Qur'anic verse about him 00:10:50.580 --> 00:10:52.580 that the Muslims recited 00:10:52.580 --> 00:10:54.580 throughout the night and the day, 00:10:54.580 --> 00:10:56.580 and it will continue to be recited 00:10:56.580 --> 00:10:58.580 until Allah inherits 00:10:58.580 --> 00:11:00.669 the earth and everyone upon it. 00:11:00.669 --> 00:11:02.669 Allah revealed concerning him 00:11:02.669 --> 00:11:04.669 His words, the Almighty and Majestic: 00:11:04.669 --> 00:11:06.669 "Among the believers 00:11:06.669 --> 00:11:08.669 are men who have been true to 00:11:08.669 --> 00:11:10.669 what they pledged to Allah; 00:11:10.669 --> 00:11:12.669 of them are some 00:11:12.669 --> 00:11:14.669 who have fulfilled their vow, 00:11:14.669 --> 00:11:16.669 and among them 00:11:16.669 --> 00:11:18.669 are some who still wait, 00:11:18.669 --> 00:11:20.669 and they have not altered 00:11:20.669 --> 00:11:22.669 [their commitment] in the least." 00:11:26.509 --> 00:11:28.509 There is a noble hadith 00:11:28.509 --> 00:11:30.509 regarding Anas Ibn al-Nadr, 00:11:30.509 --> 00:11:32.509 and the Holy Qur'an 00:11:32.509 --> 00:11:34.509 was revealed in his honor. 00:11:34.509 --> 00:11:37.340 Regarding Muhammad and his Companions, 00:11:37.340 --> 00:11:39.340 the lofty structure has been built, 00:11:39.340 --> 00:11:41.340 O poet, 00:11:41.340 --> 00:11:43.340 so help me to speak at length 00:11:43.340 --> 00:11:45.340 in their praise; are they not 00:11:45.340 --> 00:11:47.340 the ones who have triumphed?
