In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
A summary of the Prophetic biography (Seerah).
The prostration of the disbelievers of Quraysh.
In Ramadan of the fifth year of the Prophetic mission,
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, went out to the Sacred Mosque.
A large number of the leaders and notables of Quraysh were present there.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood among them,
And began to recite Surah al-Najm.
When he took them by surprise with the recitation of this surah,
And their ears were struck by divine words, magnificent and captivating,
Whose splendor and majesty defy description,
They were completely absorbed in what they heard.
Each one remained listening intently to him,
With nothing else crossing their minds.
Until, when he reached the final verses of this surah,
Which contain warnings that make hearts tremble,
He then read,
"So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him]."
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, then prostrated.
No one could restrain themselves, and they all fell down in prostration.
In truth,
The splendor of the Truth had shattered the stubbornness
Within the souls of the arrogant and the mockers,
So they could not help but fall down in prostration to Allah.
The two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) narrated in their Sahih collections,
With the wording belonging to al-Bukhari,
On the authority of 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
"The first surah in which a prostration was revealed was al-Najm."
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, prostrated,
And those behind him prostrated,
Except for one man whom I saw take a handful of dirt and prostrate upon it.
I saw him later killed as a disbeliever,
And he was Umayyah Ibn Khalaf.
Imam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad with a sound chain of transmission,
On the authority of al-Muttalib Ibn Abi Wada'ah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
"I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, prostrate during [the recitation of] al-Najm,
And the people prostrated with him,
But I did not prostrate with them."
He was a polytheist at that time.
"I will never cease to prostrate during it ever again."
The return of the migrants to Abyssinia to Makkah.
This news reached the migrants in Abyssinia, may Allah be pleased with them,
But in a form completely different from the reality.
It reached them that the people of Makkah had embraced Islam,
And that they had prostrated with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
The migrants said,
"Our own kin are dearer to us,"
So they left Abyssinia, returning to Makkah.
This was in Shawwal of the fifth year of the Prophetic mission.
When they were an hour's distance from Makkah,
The truth became clear to them,
And they realized that the polytheists were more hostile than ever to Allah, His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and the Muslims.
They considered returning to the land of Abyssinia,
But they said, "We have already reached Makkah."
So they entered Makkah,
And none of them entered except in secret,
Or under the protection of a man from Quraysh.
Some of them returned to Abyssinia.
Al-Hafiz al-Bayhaqi said:
"We have narrated that it was revealed after 'Uthman Ibn 'Affan had migrated,
Along with 'Uthman Ibn Maz'un and their companions, may Allah be pleased with them, to the land of Abyssinia in the first migration."
When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, recited it in prayer,
And he prostrated, and the Muslims and the polytheists prostrated,
And the news reached them,
They returned.
Then they migrated the second time with Ja'far Ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him,
And that was two years before the Night Journey (Isra').
