A hadith and commentary.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
"Let your hands be soft for your brothers."
Commentary:
This is a phrase the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to say
while he was straightening the rows for prayer.
It is as if he were saying:
If your brother standing next to you takes your hand
to move you forward or backward in the row,
do not resist or become annoyed.
Rather, be compliant and yielding toward him,
because he is your brother,
and because he intends good for you.
This is how we ought to be in recommended and permissible matters:
that we cooperate and remain gentle,
that we strive for harmony and accord,
and that we abandon discord and division.
May this noble and beautiful phrase—
"Let your hands be soft for your brothers"—
be one of our mottos,
a phrase that circulates constantly upon our tongues,
and one that is present and applied in our daily interactions.
