00:00:00.780 --> 00:00:09.779
Riyadh al-Salihin from the words of the Master of the Messengers, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:00:09.779 --> 00:00:16.429
The Book of Supplications (Du'a).

00:00:16.429 --> 00:00:18.429
Chapter: The Virtue of Supplication.

00:00:18.429 --> 00:00:22.059
Allah the Exalted says:

00:00:22.059 --> 00:00:26.059
“And your Lord hath said: Pray unto Me and I will hear your prayer. Lo! those who scorn My service, they will enter hell, disgraced.” (40:60)

00:00:26.059 --> 00:00:28.059
And He the Exalted says:

00:00:28.059 --> 00:00:32.060
"Call upon your Lord in humility and privately."

00:00:32.060 --> 00:00:36.219
“(O mankind!) Call upon your Lord humbly and in secret. Lo! He loveth not aggressors.” (7:55)

00:00:36.219 --> 00:00:38.259
And He the Exalted says:

00:00:38.259 --> 00:00:46.259
“And when My servants question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright.” (2:186)

00:00:46.259 --> 00:00:48.380
[The verse].

00:00:48.380 --> 00:00:50.420
And He the Exalted says:

00:00:50.420 --> 00:00:56.420
“Is not He (best) Who answereth the wronged one when he crieth unto Him and removeth the evil, and hath made you viceroys of the earth? Is there any Allah beside Allah? Little do they reflect!” (27:62)

00:00:56.420 --> 00:00:58.579
[The verse].

00:00:58.579 --> 00:01:03.789
On the authority of al-Nu'man Ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with them both:

00:01:03.789 --> 00:01:07.790
On the authority of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said:

00:01:07.790 --> 00:01:10.790
"Supplication is worship."

00:01:10.790 --> 00:01:14.019
Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi.

00:01:14.019 --> 00:01:18.010
From the benefits of the hadith:

00:01:18.010 --> 00:01:20.010
Supplication is the essence of worship.

00:01:20.010 --> 00:01:25.420
Therefore, it should be sincere and correct.

00:01:25.420 --> 00:01:30.420
The servant should manifest his helplessness and need before his Lord.

00:01:30.420 --> 00:01:34.420
And acknowledge that his Master is capable of answering him.

00:01:34.420 --> 00:01:36.420
Whether He answers now,

00:01:36.420 --> 00:01:39.420
Or delays it until the Day of Resurrection,

00:01:39.420 --> 00:01:43.420
Or averts some evil from him.

00:01:43.420 --> 00:01:48.579
On the authority of 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said:

00:01:48.579 --> 00:01:54.579
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, loved comprehensive supplications,

00:01:54.579 --> 00:01:57.739
And would leave aside other than that.

00:01:57.739 --> 00:02:01.659
Narrated by Abu Dawud.

00:02:01.659 --> 00:02:03.659
Comprehensive supplications:

00:02:03.659 --> 00:02:07.659
Meaning supplications that encompass important matters and needs.

00:02:07.659 --> 00:02:11.659
Thus, they are concise in wording but vast in meaning.

00:02:11.659 --> 00:02:15.620
From the benefits of the hadith:

00:02:15.620 --> 00:02:22.139
The recommendation to supplicate with brief phrases that encompass the meanings of goodness.

00:02:22.139 --> 00:02:25.139
Allah favored His Messenger with the ability to speak concisely.

00:02:25.139 --> 00:02:31.680
He gathered for him various wisdoms and sciences in brief words.

00:02:31.680 --> 00:02:34.680
The best speech is that which is brief and conveys the meaning.

00:02:34.680 --> 00:02:41.680
Therefore, brevity is recommended to reach the goal by the easiest path and simplest wording.

00:02:41.680 --> 00:02:45.930
On the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

00:02:45.930 --> 00:02:50.930
The most frequent supplication of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was:

00:02:50.930 --> 00:02:56.930
“And of them (also) is he who saith: "Our Lord! Give unto us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and guard us from the doom of Fire."” (2:201)

00:02:56.930 --> 00:02:58.930
"And protect us from the punishment of the Fire."

00:02:58.930 --> 00:03:01.060
Agreed upon.

00:03:01.060 --> 00:03:04.280
Muslim added in his narration: He said:

00:03:04.280 --> 00:03:10.280
Anas, when he wanted to make a supplication, would use this one.

00:03:10.280 --> 00:03:16.590
And when he wanted to make a prayer, he would include it in it.

00:03:16.590 --> 00:03:19.009
From the benefits of the hadith:

00:03:19.009 --> 00:03:22.009
The recommendation to maintain this supplication.

00:03:22.009 --> 00:03:28.009
Due to its brevity and its encompassing of the good of this world and the Hereafter.

00:03:28.009 --> 00:03:33.460
The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, frequently used this verse in his supplication.

00:03:33.460 --> 00:03:36.460
Because it gathers all the meanings of supplication.

00:03:36.460 --> 00:03:39.460
It includes the blessings of this world and the Hereafter.

00:03:39.460 --> 00:03:42.460
And protection from the punishment.

00:03:42.460 --> 00:03:47.969
"Good in this world" includes every worldly requirement.

00:03:47.969 --> 00:03:50.969
Such as well-being and a spacious home.

00:03:50.969 --> 00:03:53.969
A righteous wife and a dutiful child.

00:03:53.969 --> 00:03:57.969
Abundant provision, beneficial knowledge, and righteous deeds.

00:03:57.969 --> 00:04:02.969
A comfortable ride, good reputation, and other such things.

00:04:02.969 --> 00:04:08.479
"Good in the Hereafter" is, at its highest, entering Paradise.

00:04:08.479 --> 00:04:13.479
And its consequences, such as safety from the Great Terror on the plains of Resurrection.

00:04:13.479 --> 00:04:18.480
Ease of reckoning, and other matters of the Hereafter.

00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:22.019
Protection from the punishment of the Fire.

00:04:22.019 --> 00:04:25.019
Requires facilitating its causes in this world.

00:04:25.019 --> 00:04:29.019
By avoiding forbidden things and leaving doubtful matters.

00:04:29.019 --> 00:04:35.540
The keenness of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, to preserve the Sunnah and implement it.

00:04:35.540 --> 00:04:41.540
In response to Allah and His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:04:41.540 --> 00:04:45.589
On the authority of Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him:

00:04:45.589 --> 00:04:50.589
That the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to say:

00:04:50.589 --> 00:04:56.620
"O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and independence."

00:04:56.620 --> 00:04:58.720
Narrated by Muslim.

00:04:58.720 --> 00:05:03.069
On the authority of Tariq Ibn Ashyam, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

00:05:03.069 --> 00:05:06.069
When a man would embrace Islam,

00:05:06.069 --> 00:05:10.069
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would teach him the prayer (salah).

00:05:10.069 --> 00:05:14.069
Then he would command him to supplicate with these words:

00:05:14.069 --> 00:05:18.259
"O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me,

00:05:18.259 --> 00:05:21.259
Guide me, grant me well-being, and provide for me."

00:05:21.259 --> 00:05:23.259
Narrated by Muslim.

00:05:23.259 --> 00:05:26.420
In a narration of his from Tariq:

00:05:26.420 --> 00:05:30.420
That he heard the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:05:30.420 --> 00:05:33.420
When a man came to him and said:

00:05:33.420 --> 00:05:35.420
"O Messenger of Allah,

00:05:35.420 --> 00:05:38.420
What should I say when I ask my Lord?"

00:05:38.420 --> 00:05:39.420
He said:

00:05:39.420 --> 00:05:40.420
"Say:

00:05:40.420 --> 00:05:43.420
O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me,

00:05:43.420 --> 00:05:46.420
Grant me well-being, and provide for me."

00:05:46.420 --> 00:05:51.420
For these gather for you your worldly life and your Hereafter.

00:05:51.420 --> 00:05:55.610
From the benefits of the hadith:

00:05:55.610 --> 00:05:58.610
Clarification of the importance of prayer in the religion.

00:05:58.610 --> 00:06:01.610
For it is its pillar and the foundation of Islam.

00:06:01.610 --> 00:06:05.220
The keenness of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:06:05.220 --> 00:06:08.220
To teach people goodness.

00:06:08.220 --> 00:06:11.699
The servant's acknowledgment of his sins,

00:06:11.699 --> 00:06:13.699
And seeking forgiveness for them,

00:06:13.699 --> 00:06:17.209
Is a cause for the mercy of Allah the Exalted.

00:06:17.209 --> 00:06:20.209
The greatest goals and needs of the believing servant:

00:06:20.209 --> 00:06:24.209
Walking on the path of guidance and uprightness.

00:06:24.209 --> 00:06:27.779
Facilitating provision for the believing servant.

00:06:27.779 --> 00:06:30.779
Relieves his soul from the worry of acquiring it.

00:06:30.779 --> 00:06:33.779
Which distracts from performing acts of obedience.

00:06:33.779 --> 00:06:37.389
It is recommended for the servant to ask his Lord for:

00:06:37.389 --> 00:06:40.389
The good of this world and the Hereafter.

00:06:40.389 --> 00:06:46.579
On the authority of 'Abdullah Ibn 'Amr Ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said:

00:06:46.579 --> 00:06:50.579
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

00:06:50.579 --> 00:06:53.829
"O Turner of hearts,

00:06:53.829 --> 00:06:56.829
Turn our hearts toward Your obedience."

00:06:56.829 --> 00:07:00.180
Narrated by Muslim.

00:07:00.180 --> 00:07:04.430
From the benefits of the hadith:

00:07:04.430 --> 00:07:08.430
The hearts of the children of Adam are between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful.

00:07:08.430 --> 00:07:11.430
He turns them however He wills.

00:07:11.430 --> 00:07:14.910
The servant should seek help from Allah.

00:07:14.910 --> 00:07:18.910
One must rely on Allah for guidance, uprightness, and avoiding deviation.

00:07:18.910 --> 00:07:23.420
If the servant is left to himself, he will be destroyed.

00:07:23.420 --> 00:07:28.899
Success is that Allah does not leave you to yourself for the blink of an eye.

00:07:28.899 --> 00:07:34.019
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him:

00:07:34.019 --> 00:07:38.089
On the authority of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said:

00:07:38.089 --> 00:07:41.089
"Seek refuge in Allah from the hardship of trial,

00:07:41.089 --> 00:07:44.089
From the reaching of misery,

00:07:45.089 --> 00:07:48.180
And from the gloating of enemies."

00:07:48.180 --> 00:07:51.180
Agreed upon.

00:07:51.180 --> 00:07:54.180
In a narration, Sufyan said:

00:07:54.180 --> 00:07:58.949
"I doubt if I added one of them."

00:07:58.949 --> 00:08:02.240
"Hardship" means difficulty.

00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:06.459
"Reaching" means being overtaken by it.

00:08:06.459 --> 00:08:10.620
"Misery" means severity and distress.

00:08:10.620 --> 00:08:14.620
"Gloating" means rejoicing at the enemy's sadness.

00:08:14.620 --> 00:08:18.649
From the benefits of the hadith:

00:08:18.649 --> 00:08:24.220
The recommendation to seek refuge from the things mentioned in the hadith.

00:08:24.220 --> 00:08:27.220
Rhymed speech is not disliked,

00:08:27.220 --> 00:08:30.220
If it comes without intent or affectation.

00:08:30.220 --> 00:08:33.639
The benefit of seeking refuge and supplication:

00:08:33.639 --> 00:08:38.639
The servant manifesting his need to his Lord and his humility before Him.

00:08:38.639 --> 00:08:43.860
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

00:08:43.860 --> 00:08:48.919
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to say:

00:08:48.919 --> 00:08:53.919
"O Allah, rectify for me my religion, which is the protection of my affairs,

00:08:53.919 --> 00:08:57.919
Rectify for me my world, in which is my livelihood,

00:08:57.919 --> 00:09:02.919
And rectify for me my Hereafter, to which is my return.

00:09:02.919 --> 00:09:07.919
Make life an increase for me in every good,

00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:12.139
And make death a rest for me from every evil."

00:09:12.139 --> 00:09:14.139
Narrated by Muslim.

00:09:14.139 --> 00:09:19.779
"Protection of my affairs" means that which I hold onto in my matters.

00:09:19.779 --> 00:09:26.039
"In which is my livelihood" means the place of my living and the time of my life.

00:09:26.039 --> 00:09:32.330
"To which is my return" means the place of my return and my coming back to You.

00:09:32.330 --> 00:09:36.059
From the benefits of the hadith:

00:09:36.059 --> 00:09:41.320
Islam is a protection for the servant from falling into error and slipping.

00:09:41.320 --> 00:09:44.320
And a safeguard from the misguidance of desires.

00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:48.860
The Muslim works for his world as if he will live forever,

00:09:48.860 --> 00:09:53.860
And works for his Hereafter as if he will die tomorrow.

00:09:53.860 --> 00:10:00.220
The long life of the Muslim servant is a cause for increasing in deeds of goodness and righteousness.

00:10:00.220 --> 00:10:06.700
The believing servant should be between perfecting worship and mastering work.

00:10:06.700 --> 00:10:11.700
And the right of reliance (tawakkul) and complete seeking of help from Allah the Almighty.

00:10:11.700 --> 00:10:17.210
The believing servant finds rest by meeting his Lord from the trials and evils,

00:10:17.210 --> 00:10:22.210
Which snatch away those whose faith is not firm and whose certainty is not established.

00:10:22.210 --> 00:10:27.389
On the authority of 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

00:10:27.389 --> 00:10:31.389
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me:

00:10:31.389 --> 00:10:36.389
"Say: O Allah, guide me and make me upright."

00:10:36.389 --> 00:10:42.549
In another narration: "O Allah, I ask You for guidance and uprightness."

00:10:42.549 --> 00:10:44.679
Narrated by Muslim.

00:10:44.679 --> 00:10:51.379
"Uprightness" means straightness and correctness in the matter and the goal.

00:10:51.379 --> 00:10:56.379
Grant me success and make me correct in all my affairs.

00:10:56.379 --> 00:10:59.610
"Guidance" means right direction.

00:10:59.610 --> 00:11:03.250
From the benefits of the hadith:

00:11:03.250 --> 00:11:08.570
The one supplicating should be keen on correcting his work and refining it.

00:11:08.570 --> 00:11:11.570
By adhering to the Sunnah and sincerity of intention.

00:11:11.570 --> 00:11:17.179
The servant should seek help from Allah in all his affairs.

00:11:17.179 --> 00:11:22.330
On the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

00:11:22.330 --> 00:11:26.330
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to say:

00:11:26.330 --> 00:11:31.460
"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness,

00:11:31.460 --> 00:11:34.460
From cowardice, old age, and stinginess.

00:11:34.460 --> 00:11:37.460
And I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave,

00:11:37.460 --> 00:11:41.460
And I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death."

00:11:41.460 --> 00:11:46.490
In a narration: "And from the burden of debt and the dominance of men."

00:11:46.490 --> 00:11:49.580
Narrated by Muslim.

00:11:49.580 --> 00:11:54.320
"Cowardice" means fear and weakness.

00:11:54.320 --> 00:11:58.480
"Burden of debt" means the weight of debt and its severity.

00:11:58.480 --> 00:12:03.929
"Dominance of men" means the severity of their overpowering him.

00:12:03.929 --> 00:12:07.789
From the benefits of the hadith:

00:12:07.789 --> 00:12:11.110
This supplication is from the comprehensive words.

00:12:12.110 --> 00:12:15.110
Because the types of vices are three:

00:12:15.110 --> 00:12:19.110
Psychological, physical, and external.

00:12:19.110 --> 00:12:23.110
And the hadith includes seeking refuge from all of them.

00:12:23.110 --> 00:12:26.590
Helplessness and laziness are companions.

00:12:26.590 --> 00:12:32.590
For the failure of the servant's interest, perfection, pleasure, and joy,

00:12:32.590 --> 00:12:35.590
Either its source is lack of ability,

00:12:35.590 --> 00:12:37.590
Which is helplessness,

00:12:37.590 --> 00:12:39.590
Or he is capable of it,

00:12:39.590 --> 00:12:42.590
But it fails due to his lack of will,

00:12:42.590 --> 00:12:44.590
Which is laziness.

00:12:44.590 --> 00:12:48.590
And its possessor is blamed for it in a way he is not blamed for helplessness.

00:12:48.590 --> 00:12:52.590
Helplessness may be the fruit of laziness.

00:12:52.590 --> 00:12:56.590
For often a person is lazy about a thing he is capable of,

00:12:56.590 --> 00:12:58.590
And his will weakens regarding it,

00:12:58.590 --> 00:13:01.590
Which leads him to helplessness regarding it.

00:13:01.590 --> 00:13:05.139
The expected goodness from the servant,

00:13:05.139 --> 00:13:08.139
Is either with his wealth or with his body.

00:13:08.139 --> 00:13:10.139
The one who withholds the first is stingy,

00:13:10.139 --> 00:13:13.139
And the one who withholds the second is a coward.

00:13:13.139 --> 00:13:17.139
Therefore, the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sought refuge

00:13:17.139 --> 00:13:19.139
From cowardice and stinginess.

00:13:19.139 --> 00:13:21.580
Affirmation of the punishment of the grave,

00:13:21.580 --> 00:13:24.580
And the obligation of seeking refuge from its trial.

00:13:24.580 --> 00:13:28.029
The oppression that befalls the servant is of two types:

00:13:28.029 --> 00:13:30.029
The first of these

00:13:30.029 --> 00:13:32.029
is subjugation for the sake of truth,

00:13:32.029 --> 00:13:34.029
which is the pillar of the religion.

00:13:34.029 --> 00:13:35.029
The second

00:13:35.029 --> 00:13:37.029
is subjugation for the sake of falsehood,

00:13:38.029 --> 00:13:40.029
which is the domination of men over others.

00:13:40.029 --> 00:13:44.029
It is for this reason that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sought refuge

00:13:44.029 --> 00:13:46.029
from both types of subjugation.

00:13:46.029 --> 00:13:48.029
For religion, once it enters a heart,

00:13:48.029 --> 00:13:50.029
removes from the intellect

00:13:50.029 --> 00:13:52.029
that which does not return to it.

00:13:52.029 --> 00:13:55.029
And when the kings of the people become their lowest,

00:13:55.029 --> 00:13:58.029
they make their noble ones humiliated,

00:13:58.029 --> 00:14:00.029
and that is how they act.

00:14:00.029 --> 00:14:05.120
It is narrated from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him,

00:14:05.120 --> 00:14:10.120
that he said to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

00:14:10.120 --> 00:14:14.120
"Teach me a supplication that I may invoke in my prayer."

00:14:14.120 --> 00:14:16.120
He said,

00:14:16.120 --> 00:14:17.120
"Say:

00:14:17.120 --> 00:14:21.120
'O Allah, I have greatly wronged my soul,

00:14:21.120 --> 00:14:25.120
and none forgives sins except You,

00:14:25.120 --> 00:14:29.120
so grant me forgiveness from You and have mercy upon me;

00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:33.120
indeed, You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.'"

00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:35.250
It is agreed upon.

00:14:35.250 --> 00:14:37.440
In another narration,

00:14:37.440 --> 00:14:39.440
"and in my house."

00:14:39.440 --> 00:14:41.440
It is narrated as "greatly" (kathiran),

00:14:41.440 --> 00:14:43.440
and it is narrated as "immensely" (kabiran),

00:14:43.440 --> 00:14:45.440
with the 'tha' and the 'ba'.

00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:48.440
Therefore, it is appropriate to combine both,

00:14:48.440 --> 00:14:50.440
so one says:

00:14:50.440 --> 00:14:52.440
"greatly, immensely."

00:14:52.440 --> 00:14:55.240
Among the benefits of the hadith:

00:14:55.240 --> 00:14:59.529
It is recommended to recite this supplication before the final salutation.

00:14:59.529 --> 00:15:03.009
A person is never free from shortcoming,

00:15:03.009 --> 00:15:05.009
even if he were a truthful one (Siddiq).

00:15:05.009 --> 00:15:08.009
Therefore, one should always be

00:15:08.009 --> 00:15:09.009
in a state of seeking forgiveness.

00:15:09.009 --> 00:15:11.549
Acknowledging one's sin

00:15:11.549 --> 00:15:13.549
is a cause for repentance

00:15:13.549 --> 00:15:15.549
and for attaining forgiveness

00:15:15.549 --> 00:15:16.549
through turning back to Allah.

00:15:16.549 --> 00:15:20.100
It is recommended to seek instruction from a scholar,

00:15:20.100 --> 00:15:23.100
just as al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, did,

00:15:23.100 --> 00:15:25.100
when he sought to learn

00:15:25.100 --> 00:15:28.100
from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

00:15:28.100 --> 00:15:30.990
Riyad al-Salihin.

00:15:30.990 --> 00:15:32.990
Riyad al-Salihin.
