WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

00:00:15.570 --> 00:00:17.570
The Mawaddah Association is pleased

00:00:17.570 --> 00:00:19.570
to present to you:

00:00:19.570 --> 00:00:21.570
"Portraits from the Lives of the Companions"

00:00:21.570 --> 00:00:23.570
by 'Abd al-Rahman

00:00:23.570 --> 00:00:25.570
Ra'fat al-Basha,

00:00:25.570 --> 00:00:30.160
may Allah have mercy on him.

00:00:30.160 --> 00:00:32.159
The Day of al-Raji'.

00:00:35.090 --> 00:00:37.219
[Poetic prelude]

00:00:37.219 --> 00:00:39.789
[...]

00:00:39.789 --> 00:00:41.789
[...]

00:00:41.789 --> 00:00:43.789
[...]

00:00:43.789 --> 00:00:48.899
[...]

00:00:48.899 --> 00:00:50.899
Towards the end of the third year after the Hijrah,

00:00:50.899 --> 00:00:52.899
there arrived in Yathrib

00:00:52.899 --> 00:00:54.899
a delegation from Banu Khuzaymah feigning

00:00:54.899 --> 00:00:56.899
Islam and outwardly professing

00:00:56.899 --> 00:00:58.899
faith.

00:00:58.899 --> 00:01:00.899
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, warmly

00:01:00.899 --> 00:01:02.899
welcomed them and generously hosted

00:01:02.899 --> 00:01:04.900
their delegation, and

00:01:04.900 --> 00:01:06.900
the Companions rejoiced over them immensely,

00:01:06.900 --> 00:01:08.900
making them feel entirely at home

00:01:08.900 --> 00:01:11.019
and extending to them utmost hospitality.

00:01:11.019 --> 00:01:13.019
Before the men of the delegation prepared

00:01:13.019 --> 00:01:15.019
to depart back to their people,

00:01:15.019 --> 00:01:17.019
they said, "O Messenger of Allah,

00:01:17.019 --> 00:01:19.019
indeed among our people are many

00:01:19.019 --> 00:01:21.019
who believe in Allah and His Messenger,

00:01:21.019 --> 00:01:23.019
yet they have not been fortunate enough

00:01:23.019 --> 00:01:25.019
to gain knowledge of Islam,

00:01:25.019 --> 00:01:27.019
nor have they been illuminated by the light of faith.

00:01:27.019 --> 00:01:29.019
If only you would send with us

00:01:29.019 --> 00:01:31.019
a group of your Companions to recite to us

00:01:31.019 --> 00:01:33.019
the Qur'an

00:01:33.019 --> 00:01:35.019
and teach us the laws of Islam,

00:01:35.019 --> 00:01:37.180
instructing us in the religion of Allah."

00:01:37.180 --> 00:01:39.180
So the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:01:39.180 --> 00:01:41.180
granted their request

00:01:41.180 --> 00:01:43.180
and selected for them

00:01:43.180 --> 00:01:45.180
six of the Ansar:

00:01:45.180 --> 00:01:47.180
Marthad al-Ghanawi,

00:01:47.180 --> 00:01:49.180
Khalid al-Laythi,

00:01:49.180 --> 00:01:51.180
'Abdullah Ibn Tariq,

00:01:51.180 --> 00:01:53.180
Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah,

00:01:53.180 --> 00:01:55.180
Khubayb Ibn 'Adiy,

00:01:55.180 --> 00:01:57.180
and 'Asim Ibn Thabit.

00:01:57.180 --> 00:01:59.180
He instructed them to prepare to journey with them

00:01:59.180 --> 00:02:01.180
and reside among them

00:02:01.180 --> 00:02:03.409
until his further command reached them.

00:02:03.409 --> 00:02:05.409
These six noble, righteous men

00:02:05.409 --> 00:02:08.409
from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, rejoiced

00:02:08.409 --> 00:02:10.409
in the mission entrusted to them,

00:02:10.409 --> 00:02:12.409
and their brethren envied them

00:02:12.409 --> 00:02:14.409
for the great reward decreed for them.

00:02:14.409 --> 00:02:16.409
And how could they not rejoice,

00:02:16.409 --> 00:02:18.409
or not be envied?

00:02:18.409 --> 00:02:20.409
For prior to this day,

00:02:20.409 --> 00:02:22.409
they had enjoyed the merit of supporting

00:02:22.409 --> 00:02:24.409
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

00:02:24.409 --> 00:02:26.409
and now added to that

00:02:26.409 --> 00:02:28.409
the reward of emigrating

00:02:28.409 --> 00:02:30.500
to propagate the religion of Allah.

00:02:30.500 --> 00:02:32.500
The noble Messenger,

00:02:32.500 --> 00:02:34.500
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, bade farewell

00:02:34.500 --> 00:02:36.500
to the group of six of his Companions,

00:02:36.500 --> 00:02:38.500
counseling them to remain conscious of Allah

00:02:38.500 --> 00:02:40.500
in secret and in public,

00:02:40.500 --> 00:02:42.599
and appointed Marthad

00:02:42.599 --> 00:02:44.599
al-Ghanawi as their leader.

00:02:44.599 --> 00:02:46.599
Then their families and loved ones bid them farewell,

00:02:46.599 --> 00:02:48.599
urging them to take care of themselves

00:02:48.599 --> 00:02:50.819
and treat their companions well.

00:02:50.819 --> 00:02:52.819
The guiding callers to Allah set out

00:02:52.819 --> 00:02:54.819
alongside the delegation of Banu Khuzaymah,

00:02:54.819 --> 00:02:56.819
leaving behind family and home,

00:02:56.819 --> 00:02:58.819
parting with kinsfolk and homeland.

00:02:58.819 --> 00:03:00.819
Yet none of that

00:03:00.819 --> 00:03:02.819
weighed heavily upon them;

00:03:02.819 --> 00:03:04.819
rather, what grieved them was parting from

00:03:04.819 --> 00:03:06.819
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

00:03:06.819 --> 00:03:08.819
and being distant from him.

00:03:08.819 --> 00:03:10.819
For they never imagined

00:03:10.819 --> 00:03:12.819
they could endure

00:03:12.819 --> 00:03:14.819
being away from him,

00:03:14.819 --> 00:03:16.819
nor did they ever expect to part from him

00:03:16.819 --> 00:03:18.819
as long as their lives endured.

00:03:18.819 --> 00:03:21.050
The caravan pressed forward, hastening

00:03:21.050 --> 00:03:23.050
its steps toward the settlements of Banu Khuzaymah,

00:03:23.050 --> 00:03:25.050
situated near

00:03:25.050 --> 00:03:27.139
'Usfan,

00:03:27.139 --> 00:03:29.139
while the guiding callers traversed

00:03:29.139 --> 00:03:31.139
the wilderness

00:03:31.139 --> 00:03:33.139
to meet those eager to embrace the religion of Allah.

00:03:33.139 --> 00:03:35.139
But when they reached the region of al-Raji',

00:03:35.139 --> 00:03:37.139
they were ambushed by the most heinous

00:03:37.139 --> 00:03:39.139
treachery—one so appalling

00:03:39.139 --> 00:03:41.139
that hearts were torn to pieces by its atrocity

00:03:41.139 --> 00:03:43.139
and souls were shattered

00:03:43.139 --> 00:03:45.210
by its horror.

00:03:45.210 --> 00:03:47.210
For the group from Banu Khuzaymah

00:03:47.210 --> 00:03:49.210
that had come to the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah

00:03:49.210 --> 00:03:51.210
be upon him,

00:03:51.210 --> 00:03:53.210
had conspired with a clan from Banu Hudhayl

00:03:53.210 --> 00:03:55.210
to lure into their trap

00:03:55.210 --> 00:03:57.210
a number of the Companions of the Prophet,

00:03:57.210 --> 00:03:59.210
peace and blessings be upon him,

00:03:59.210 --> 00:04:01.210
and hand them over to them

00:04:01.210 --> 00:04:03.210
in exchange for a handsome sum

00:04:03.210 --> 00:04:05.210
they had agreed upon.

00:04:05.210 --> 00:04:07.210
Banu Hudhayl

00:04:07.210 --> 00:04:09.210
had two captives held by Quraysh,

00:04:09.210 --> 00:04:11.210
and they resolved to ransom

00:04:11.210 --> 00:04:13.210
with some of these Companions

00:04:13.210 --> 00:04:15.210
their two captives detained in Makkah,

00:04:15.210 --> 00:04:17.209
and then sell the remainder

00:04:17.209 --> 00:04:19.209
to whoever among Quraysh desired them,

00:04:19.209 --> 00:04:21.209
so they might execute them in revenge

00:04:21.209 --> 00:04:23.209
for their fathers, sons,

00:04:23.209 --> 00:04:25.209
or distinguished leaders who were slain

00:04:25.209 --> 00:04:27.370
at Badr.

00:04:27.370 --> 00:04:29.370
When the caravan drew near the region of al-Raji',

00:04:29.370 --> 00:04:31.370
the six Companions,

00:04:31.370 --> 00:04:33.370
may Allah be pleased with them, were shocked

00:04:33.370 --> 00:04:35.370
to find their companions from Banu Khuzaymah

00:04:35.370 --> 00:04:37.370
abandoning them,

00:04:37.370 --> 00:04:39.370
while a band from Hudhayl closed in

00:04:39.370 --> 00:04:41.370
upon them, brandishing

00:04:41.370 --> 00:04:43.370
swords and spears,

00:04:43.370 --> 00:04:45.370
encircling them as tightly as a shackle

00:04:45.370 --> 00:04:47.529
around a wrist.

00:04:47.529 --> 00:04:49.529
Thereupon, the six Companions

00:04:49.529 --> 00:04:51.529
dismounted from the backs

00:04:51.529 --> 00:04:53.529
of their riding beasts, drew

00:04:53.529 --> 00:04:55.529
their swords from their scabbards,

00:04:55.529 --> 00:04:57.529
and resolved to fight those

00:04:57.529 --> 00:04:59.620
who had confronted them.

00:04:59.620 --> 00:05:01.620
But the men of Hudhayl said to them,

00:05:01.620 --> 00:05:03.620
"We are the masters of this territory;

00:05:03.620 --> 00:05:05.620
our numbers are overwhelmingly

00:05:05.620 --> 00:05:07.620
vast, whereas your band

00:05:07.620 --> 00:05:09.620
is small and meager.

00:05:09.620 --> 00:05:11.620
Moreover, by the Lord of the Ka'bah, we intend

00:05:11.620 --> 00:05:13.620
you no harm, nor do we plan

00:05:13.620 --> 00:05:15.620
to put you to death;

00:05:15.620 --> 00:05:17.620
rather, we only wish

00:05:17.620 --> 00:05:19.620
to gain something through you from the people of Makkah,

00:05:19.620 --> 00:05:21.620
and for this you have

00:05:21.620 --> 00:05:23.620
the covenant and pledge of Allah."

00:05:23.620 --> 00:05:25.689
The six men from the Companions of the Messenger,

00:05:25.689 --> 00:05:27.689
peace and blessings of Allah

00:05:27.689 --> 00:05:29.689
be upon him, were cast into profound distress,

00:05:29.689 --> 00:05:31.689
no longer knowing

00:05:31.689 --> 00:05:33.689
what course to take.

00:05:33.689 --> 00:05:35.689
Then Allah willed that they should take

00:05:35.689 --> 00:05:37.689
two different paths in this ordeal:

00:05:37.689 --> 00:05:39.689
for indeed,

00:05:39.689 --> 00:05:41.689
'Asim Ibn Thabit al-Ansari,

00:05:41.689 --> 00:05:43.689
Marthad al-Ghanawi,

00:05:43.689 --> 00:05:45.689
and Khalid al-Laythi chose

00:05:45.689 --> 00:05:47.689
certain death over surrendering

00:05:47.689 --> 00:05:49.689
to the enemies of Allah and their own enemies.

00:05:49.689 --> 00:05:51.689
They said to one another,

00:05:51.689 --> 00:05:53.689
"By Allah, we shall never accept a pact from a polytheist,

00:05:53.689 --> 00:05:55.689
nor shall we ever agree

00:05:55.689 --> 00:05:57.689
to a pledge from him."

00:05:57.689 --> 00:05:59.689
Then they sprang forward, fighting Hudhayl

00:05:59.689 --> 00:06:01.689
with fierce determination

00:06:01.689 --> 00:06:03.689
until they fell slain, one

00:06:03.689 --> 00:06:05.689
after another,

00:06:05.689 --> 00:06:07.689
passing away as martyrs within a few

00:06:07.689 --> 00:06:09.689
numbered minutes.

00:06:09.689 --> 00:06:11.689
As for the other three men

00:06:11.689 --> 00:06:13.689
among the Companions of the Messenger, peace and blessings

00:06:13.689 --> 00:06:15.689
be upon him—

00:06:15.689 --> 00:06:17.689
namely, 'Abdullah Ibn Tariq,

00:06:17.689 --> 00:06:19.689
Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah, and Khubayb Ibn 'Adiy—

00:06:19.689 --> 00:06:21.689
they trusted the pledge of this treacherous

00:06:21.689 --> 00:06:23.689
band of Hudhayl

00:06:23.689 --> 00:06:25.939
and surrendered to them.

00:06:25.939 --> 00:06:27.939
When Hudhayl realized

00:06:27.939 --> 00:06:29.939
that one of the three slain

00:06:29.939 --> 00:06:31.939
was 'Asim Ibn Thabit al-Ansari,

00:06:31.939 --> 00:06:33.939
they rejoiced at his death with the greatest

00:06:33.939 --> 00:06:35.939
joy; this was because

00:06:35.939 --> 00:06:37.939
'Asim, may Allah be pleased with him,

00:06:37.939 --> 00:06:39.939
had killed on the Day of Uhud

00:06:39.939 --> 00:06:41.939
two brothers who were knights

00:06:41.939 --> 00:06:43.939
of Quraysh.

00:06:43.939 --> 00:06:45.939
Their mother, Sulafah bint Sa'd, had vowed

00:06:45.939 --> 00:06:47.939
that if she ever gained power over 'Asim,

00:06:47.939 --> 00:06:49.939
she would drink wine

00:06:49.939 --> 00:06:51.939
from the skull of his head,

00:06:51.939 --> 00:06:53.939
and she promised to whoever brought him to her alive

00:06:53.939 --> 00:06:55.939
or dead whatever they wished

00:06:55.939 --> 00:06:57.939
of precious wealth.

00:06:57.939 --> 00:06:59.939
So the men of Hudhayl stepped toward 'Asim Ibn

00:06:59.939 --> 00:07:01.939
Thabit to sever his head,

00:07:01.939 --> 00:07:03.939
They were buoying themselves with hope

00:07:03.939 --> 00:07:05.980
for a generous reward,

00:07:05.980 --> 00:07:07.980
but they found that swarms of bees

00:07:07.980 --> 00:07:09.980
and colonies of wasps

00:07:09.980 --> 00:07:11.980
had surrounded his body on every

00:07:11.980 --> 00:07:13.980
side.

00:07:13.980 --> 00:07:15.980
When they attempted to approach him,

00:07:15.980 --> 00:07:17.980
the insects fended them off.

00:07:17.980 --> 00:07:19.980
Some said to others,

00:07:19.980 --> 00:07:21.980
"Leave him until night falls,

00:07:21.980 --> 00:07:23.980
when the bees

00:07:23.980 --> 00:07:25.980
and wasps will depart from him.

00:07:25.980 --> 00:07:27.980
Then, we will sever his head

00:07:27.980 --> 00:07:30.100
and take it to Makkah."

00:07:30.100 --> 00:07:32.100
No sooner had darkness descended

00:07:32.100 --> 00:07:34.100
upon the region of al-Raji‘ and its surroundings

00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:36.100
than the sky thundered,

00:07:36.100 --> 00:07:38.100
surged,

00:07:38.100 --> 00:07:40.100
and poured down rain like water from the mouths of skins.

00:07:40.100 --> 00:07:42.100
A flood covered the valleys,

00:07:42.100 --> 00:07:44.100
the likes of which had never been seen.

00:07:44.100 --> 00:07:46.100
The flood carried ‘Asim away

00:07:46.100 --> 00:07:48.100
and swept him to places

00:07:48.100 --> 00:07:50.100
far away that had not been trodden

00:07:50.100 --> 00:07:52.100
by their feet before.

00:07:52.100 --> 00:07:54.100
They searched for him everywhere,

00:07:54.100 --> 00:07:56.100
but could not find him.

00:07:56.100 --> 00:07:58.100
They scoured every direction for him,

00:07:58.100 --> 00:08:00.100
but could not track him down.

00:08:00.100 --> 00:08:02.100
They returned, burning

00:08:02.100 --> 00:08:04.100
with frustration at having lost him.

00:08:04.100 --> 00:08:06.230
‘Asim,

00:08:06.230 --> 00:08:08.230
may Allah be pleased with him,

00:08:08.230 --> 00:08:10.230
had made a covenant with Allah, the Almighty and Majestic,

00:08:10.230 --> 00:08:12.230
saying, "O Allah, may I not touch a polytheist,

00:08:12.230 --> 00:08:14.230
for as long as I live."

00:08:14.230 --> 00:08:16.230
And he asked Him, the Glorified,

00:08:16.230 --> 00:08:18.230
not to allow any polytheist

00:08:18.230 --> 00:08:20.300
a way to touch him.

00:08:20.300 --> 00:08:22.300
Thus, Allah fulfilled for ‘Asim

00:08:22.300 --> 00:08:24.300
what he had covenanted with Him,

00:08:24.300 --> 00:08:26.300
and answered his prayer.

00:08:26.300 --> 00:08:28.300
‘Umar Ibn al-Khattab,

00:08:28.300 --> 00:08:30.300
may Allah be pleased with him, used to say,

00:08:30.300 --> 00:08:32.299
"Allah protects the believing servant."

00:08:32.299 --> 00:08:34.299
‘Asim had vowed

00:08:34.299 --> 00:08:36.299
that no polytheist would touch him,

00:08:36.299 --> 00:08:38.299
and that he would not touch a polytheist in his life;

00:08:38.299 --> 00:08:40.299
Allah protected him even after his death,

00:08:40.299 --> 00:08:42.299
just as he had remained protected from them during his life.

00:08:42.299 --> 00:08:44.460
The Hudhayl tribe set off

00:08:44.460 --> 00:08:46.460
with their three captives toward

00:08:46.460 --> 00:08:48.460
Makkah, after

00:08:48.460 --> 00:08:50.460
they had snatched away the swords

00:08:50.460 --> 00:08:52.460
that they were wearing,

00:08:52.460 --> 00:08:54.460
and seized the spears

00:08:54.460 --> 00:08:56.460
that were in their hands.

00:08:56.460 --> 00:08:58.460
Then they loosened their bowstrings

00:08:58.460 --> 00:09:00.460
and bound them with them.

00:09:00.460 --> 00:09:02.460
‘Abdullah Ibn Tariq looked

00:09:02.460 --> 00:09:04.460
at the bonds with which the Hudhayl had bound them

00:09:04.460 --> 00:09:06.460
and said,

00:09:06.460 --> 00:09:08.460
"This is the first act of treachery."

00:09:08.460 --> 00:09:10.460
He began to wait for an opportunity

00:09:10.460 --> 00:09:12.460
to be able to free himself

00:09:12.460 --> 00:09:14.460
from them.

00:09:14.460 --> 00:09:16.460
When he saw them distracted,

00:09:16.460 --> 00:09:18.460
he pulled his hands from his bonds

00:09:18.460 --> 00:09:20.460
and attempted to release his companions,

00:09:20.460 --> 00:09:22.460
Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah

00:09:22.460 --> 00:09:24.460
and Khubayb Ibn ‘Adi, from their bonds.

00:09:24.460 --> 00:09:26.460
However, the Hudhayl

00:09:26.460 --> 00:09:28.460
noticed him,

00:09:28.460 --> 00:09:30.460
and they did not approach him for fear of

00:09:30.460 --> 00:09:32.460
his strength and ferocity.

00:09:32.460 --> 00:09:34.460
They did not let him escape,

00:09:34.460 --> 00:09:36.460
but instead began pelting him with stones

00:09:36.460 --> 00:09:38.460
until they killed him.

00:09:38.460 --> 00:09:40.460
They left him where he lay

00:09:40.460 --> 00:09:42.460
and then moved on

00:09:42.460 --> 00:09:44.460
with Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah and Khubayb

00:09:44.460 --> 00:09:46.460
Ibn ‘Adi until they reached

00:09:46.460 --> 00:09:48.460
Makkah and presented them

00:09:48.460 --> 00:09:50.549
to the people.

00:09:50.549 --> 00:09:52.549
The vengeful, hateful ones

00:09:52.549 --> 00:09:54.549
among the disbelievers of Quraysh rushed forward,

00:09:54.549 --> 00:09:56.549
each wanting to secure the two captives,

00:09:56.549 --> 00:09:58.549
no matter how high the price,

00:09:58.549 --> 00:10:00.549
to use them to spite

00:10:00.549 --> 00:10:02.549
Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:10:02.549 --> 00:10:04.549
and to take revenge on them

00:10:04.549 --> 00:10:06.549
for those killed at Badr.

00:10:06.549 --> 00:10:08.549
They competed in offering exorbitant

00:10:08.549 --> 00:10:10.549
prices for them.

00:10:10.549 --> 00:10:12.549
Then one of the leaders of Quraysh stood up

00:10:12.549 --> 00:10:14.549
and said, "O people of

00:10:14.549 --> 00:10:16.549
Quraysh, do not compete

00:10:16.549 --> 00:10:18.549
over these two captives

00:10:18.549 --> 00:10:20.549
and drive up their price.

00:10:20.549 --> 00:10:22.549
Rather, leave them for those

00:10:22.549 --> 00:10:24.549
who have a blood feud against them,

00:10:24.549 --> 00:10:26.549
for they are more entitled to them than others

00:10:26.549 --> 00:10:28.549
and more deserving of taking them

00:10:28.549 --> 00:10:30.649
than anyone else."

00:10:30.649 --> 00:10:32.649
Safwan Ibn Umayyah bought Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah,

00:10:32.649 --> 00:10:34.649
may Allah be pleased with him,

00:10:34.649 --> 00:10:36.649
for a high price,

00:10:36.649 --> 00:10:38.649
to kill him in retaliation for his father, Umayyah Ibn Khalaf.

00:10:38.649 --> 00:10:40.679
The sons of

00:10:40.679 --> 00:10:42.679
al-Harith Ibn ‘Amir bought Khubayb,

00:10:42.679 --> 00:10:44.679
may Allah be pleased with him,

00:10:44.679 --> 00:10:46.679
to kill him in retaliation for their father,

00:10:46.679 --> 00:10:48.679
whom he had killed at Badr.

00:10:48.679 --> 00:10:50.679
They paid the Hudhayl

00:10:50.679 --> 00:10:52.899
an exorbitant price.

00:10:52.899 --> 00:10:54.899
Safwan Ibn Umayyah did not wait

00:10:54.899 --> 00:10:56.899
long with his captive,

00:10:56.899 --> 00:10:58.899
because of the hatred burning within his heart

00:10:58.899 --> 00:11:00.899
for Muhammad,

00:11:00.899 --> 00:11:02.899
may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:11:02.899 --> 00:11:04.899
He hastened to satisfy

00:11:04.899 --> 00:11:06.899
the thirst of Quraysh for revenge

00:11:06.899 --> 00:11:08.899
against the noble Messenger, peace be upon him,

00:11:08.899 --> 00:11:10.899
through his person,

00:11:10.899 --> 00:11:12.899
and to gladden the eyes of his people

00:11:12.899 --> 00:11:14.940
with the spectacle of his execution.

00:11:14.940 --> 00:11:16.940
He had resolved to kill him in the area of

00:11:16.940 --> 00:11:18.940
al-Tan‘im

00:11:18.940 --> 00:11:20.940
and cast his body there

00:11:20.940 --> 00:11:22.940
for the stray dogs to maul

00:11:22.940 --> 00:11:24.940
and the birds of prey

00:11:24.940 --> 00:11:26.940
to feast upon.

00:11:26.940 --> 00:11:28.940
He set a time for this and announced it in Makkah.

00:11:31.100 --> 00:11:33.100
No sooner had the morning of that appointed day

00:11:33.100 --> 00:11:35.100
dawned in the valley of Makkah

00:11:35.100 --> 00:11:37.100
than the vengeful ones

00:11:37.100 --> 00:11:39.100
among the disbelievers of Quraysh,

00:11:39.100 --> 00:11:41.100
those who hated Muhammad,

00:11:41.100 --> 00:11:43.100
may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and his message,

00:11:43.100 --> 00:11:45.100
and the rabble of men,

00:11:45.100 --> 00:11:47.100
women, and children

00:11:47.100 --> 00:11:49.100
were swarming in groups

00:11:49.100 --> 00:11:51.100
toward the area of al-Tan‘im,

00:11:51.100 --> 00:11:53.100
outside the boundaries of the Haram.

00:11:53.100 --> 00:11:55.100
They were driving

00:11:55.100 --> 00:11:57.100
their captive before them, shackled

00:11:57.100 --> 00:11:59.100
in chains,

00:11:59.100 --> 00:12:01.100
to kill him there in the sight

00:12:01.100 --> 00:12:03.100
of the people.

00:12:03.100 --> 00:12:05.100
At the head of all these people

00:12:05.100 --> 00:12:07.190
was Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb.

00:12:07.190 --> 00:12:09.190
They prepared Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah,

00:12:09.190 --> 00:12:11.190
may Allah be pleased with him, for execution

00:12:11.190 --> 00:12:13.190
and raised him on a high piece

00:12:13.190 --> 00:12:15.190
of ground so that both old and young

00:12:15.190 --> 00:12:17.190
could witness his death.

00:12:17.190 --> 00:12:19.190
He faced death

00:12:19.190 --> 00:12:21.190
with a steadfast heart and a

00:12:21.190 --> 00:12:23.220
cheerful face.

00:12:23.220 --> 00:12:25.220
Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb approached him

00:12:25.220 --> 00:12:27.220
and said,

00:12:27.220 --> 00:12:29.220
"I adjure you by Allah, O Zayd,

00:12:29.220 --> 00:12:31.220
would you not love for Muhammad

00:12:31.220 --> 00:12:33.220
to be in your place now,

00:12:33.220 --> 00:12:35.220
and for his neck to be struck instead of yours,

00:12:35.220 --> 00:12:37.220
so that we might set you free

00:12:37.220 --> 00:12:39.220
to go safely and securely

00:12:39.220 --> 00:12:41.220
to your family?"

00:12:41.220 --> 00:12:43.320
Zayd smiled and said,

00:12:43.320 --> 00:12:45.320
"By Allah, I would not love for even a thorn

00:12:45.320 --> 00:12:47.320
to prick Muhammad and harm him,

00:12:47.320 --> 00:12:49.320
while he is in the place

00:12:49.320 --> 00:12:51.320
where he is now,

00:12:51.320 --> 00:12:53.320
even if that meant I were set free

00:12:53.320 --> 00:12:55.320
to be safe and secure

00:12:55.320 --> 00:12:57.379
among my family."

00:12:57.379 --> 00:12:59.379
The people’s anger intensified at his words,

00:12:59.379 --> 00:13:01.379
and their shouting increased:

00:13:01.379 --> 00:13:03.379
"Kill him!"

00:13:03.379 --> 00:13:05.480
Abu Sufyan said,

00:13:05.480 --> 00:13:07.480
"By Allah, I have never seen

00:13:07.480 --> 00:13:09.480
anyone among the people love

00:13:09.480 --> 00:13:11.480
anyone else as

00:13:11.480 --> 00:13:13.480
the companions of Muhammad

00:13:13.480 --> 00:13:15.480
love Muhammad." Then

00:13:15.480 --> 00:13:17.480
they rushed upon him and broke his neck,

00:13:17.480 --> 00:13:19.480
while he was testifying

00:13:19.480 --> 00:13:21.480
that there is no god but Allah,

00:13:21.480 --> 00:13:23.480
and that His Prophet and chosen one,

00:13:23.480 --> 00:13:25.480
Muhammad, is the Messenger of Allah.

00:13:25.480 --> 00:13:27.639
That was what happened

00:13:27.639 --> 00:13:29.639
regarding the affair of Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah,

00:13:29.639 --> 00:13:31.740
may Allah be pleased with him and grant him satisfaction.

00:13:31.740 --> 00:13:33.740
As for his companion, Khubayb

00:13:33.740 --> 00:13:35.740
Ibn ‘Adi, here is

00:13:35.740 --> 00:13:37.830
his story. The family of

00:13:37.830 --> 00:13:39.830
al-Harith kept Khubayb Ibn ‘Adi

00:13:39.830 --> 00:13:41.830
in the darkness of a prison in their house,

00:13:41.830 --> 00:13:43.830
And extended his imprisonment,

00:13:43.830 --> 00:13:45.830
so he spent his days among them,

00:13:45.830 --> 00:13:47.830
alternating between fasting and night prayers.

00:13:47.830 --> 00:13:49.899
Whenever they looked at him,

00:13:49.899 --> 00:13:51.899
the daughters and slave-girls of Al-Harith,

00:13:51.899 --> 00:13:53.899
during the night or the day,

00:13:53.899 --> 00:13:55.899
they found him to be either

00:13:55.899 --> 00:13:57.899
bowing or prostrating,

00:13:57.899 --> 00:13:59.899
or reciting the Book of Allah,

00:13:59.899 --> 00:14:01.899
with his eyes overflowing

00:14:01.899 --> 00:14:03.899
with tears, so their hearts softened

00:14:03.899 --> 00:14:05.899
toward him,

00:14:05.899 --> 00:14:07.899
and they almost forgot that he had killed

00:14:07.899 --> 00:14:10.019
their father at Badr.

00:14:10.019 --> 00:14:12.019
One of them narrated about him

00:14:12.019 --> 00:14:14.019
after she embraced Islam,

00:14:14.019 --> 00:14:16.019
saying, "Khubayb was detained

00:14:16.019 --> 00:14:18.019
in our home,

00:14:18.019 --> 00:14:20.019
and when the people resolved to kill him,

00:14:20.019 --> 00:14:22.019
he asked me to give him a razor

00:14:22.019 --> 00:14:24.019
to shave what is customary

00:14:24.019 --> 00:14:26.019
for a Muslim to shave of his hair,

00:14:26.019 --> 00:14:28.019
and to groom himself before being killed.

00:14:28.019 --> 00:14:30.019
So I granted his request.

00:14:30.019 --> 00:14:32.019
Then I became distracted from

00:14:32.019 --> 00:14:34.019
a young toddler of mine,

00:14:34.019 --> 00:14:36.019
who crawled toward him and sat

00:14:36.019 --> 00:14:38.019
in his lap.

00:14:38.019 --> 00:14:40.019
I was suddenly terrified to see the razor

00:14:40.019 --> 00:14:42.019
in his hand while the boy

00:14:42.019 --> 00:14:44.019
was sitting on his thigh!

00:14:44.019 --> 00:14:46.019
What had I done?

00:14:46.019 --> 00:14:48.019
Khubayb Ibn 'Adi could easily exact

00:14:48.019 --> 00:14:50.019
his revenge by killing my child

00:14:50.019 --> 00:14:52.019
before he himself was killed!

00:14:52.019 --> 00:14:54.019
I panicked, and he saw the terror on my face,

00:14:54.019 --> 00:14:56.059
so he turned to me

00:14:56.059 --> 00:14:58.059
with tenderness and gentleness,

00:14:58.059 --> 00:15:00.059
and said, 'Do you fear that

00:15:00.059 --> 00:15:02.059
I would harm this child of yours?

00:15:02.059 --> 00:15:04.059
By Allah, I would never do

00:15:04.059 --> 00:15:06.120
such a thing.'

00:15:06.120 --> 00:15:08.120
Then he added, saying,

00:15:08.120 --> 00:15:10.120
'We, the community of Muslims, do not inflict

00:15:10.120 --> 00:15:12.120
harm upon a young child,

00:15:12.120 --> 00:15:14.120
or an elderly old man,

00:15:14.120 --> 00:15:16.120
or a monk who has devoted himself

00:15:16.120 --> 00:15:18.149
to worship.

00:15:18.149 --> 00:15:20.149
Rather, we only fight those who aggress against us

00:15:20.149 --> 00:15:22.149
and strive to drive us out

00:15:22.149 --> 00:15:24.279
from our religion.'

00:15:24.279 --> 00:15:26.279
She then said, 'By Allah,

00:15:26.279 --> 00:15:28.279
I do not think there was ever a prisoner on the face

00:15:28.279 --> 00:15:30.279
of the earth better than Khubayb.

00:15:30.279 --> 00:15:32.279
By Allah, I saw him

00:15:32.279 --> 00:15:34.279
eating from a large cluster

00:15:34.279 --> 00:15:36.279
of grapes, the likes of which my eyes

00:15:36.279 --> 00:15:38.309
had never seen before,

00:15:38.309 --> 00:15:40.309
while there were no grapes to be eaten

00:15:40.309 --> 00:15:42.309
anywhere in the land of Allah at that time!

00:15:42.309 --> 00:15:44.309
And Khubayb at that time was

00:15:44.309 --> 00:15:46.309
bound in iron chains,

00:15:46.309 --> 00:15:48.309
so these grapes were nothing less than

00:15:48.309 --> 00:15:50.309
sustenance that Allah had granted

00:15:50.309 --> 00:15:52.470
him.'

00:15:52.470 --> 00:15:54.470
And when the sons of Al-Harith resolved to

00:15:54.470 --> 00:15:56.470
execute Khubayb Ibn 'Adi,

00:15:56.470 --> 00:15:58.470
and announced it among the people,

00:15:58.470 --> 00:16:00.470
all of Mecca marched out,

00:16:00.470 --> 00:16:02.470
every last one of them, to the area of Al-Tan'im

00:16:02.470 --> 00:16:04.470
to witness the execution

00:16:04.470 --> 00:16:06.539
of their second captive.

00:16:06.539 --> 00:16:08.539
When Quraysh brought him forward for execution,

00:16:08.539 --> 00:16:10.539
he said to their leaders,

00:16:10.539 --> 00:16:12.539
'If you see fit to allow me

00:16:12.539 --> 00:16:14.539
to pray two rak'ahs, then do so.'

00:16:14.539 --> 00:16:16.539
One of them felt pity

00:16:16.539 --> 00:16:18.539
for him and said,

00:16:18.539 --> 00:16:20.539
'Go ahead and pray two rak'ahs.'

00:16:20.539 --> 00:16:22.570
So Khubayb performed two rak'ahs,

00:16:22.570 --> 00:16:24.570
completing them fully and perfectly.

00:16:24.570 --> 00:16:26.570
Then he turned to

00:16:26.570 --> 00:16:28.570
the people and said,

00:16:28.570 --> 00:16:30.570
'By Allah, were it not that you might think

00:16:30.570 --> 00:16:32.570
I only prolonged my prayer out of dread

00:16:32.570 --> 00:16:34.570
of being killed,

00:16:34.570 --> 00:16:36.820
I would have prayed much more.'

00:16:36.820 --> 00:16:38.820
The people raised Khubayb Ibn 'Adi

00:16:38.820 --> 00:16:40.820
up to the crucifixion pole

00:16:40.820 --> 00:16:42.820
and bound him securely to it.

00:16:42.820 --> 00:16:44.820
When they prepared to kill him,

00:16:44.820 --> 00:16:46.820
he said, 'O Allah,

00:16:46.820 --> 00:16:48.820
we have conveyed the message

00:16:48.820 --> 00:16:50.820
of Your Prophet, so convey to him

00:16:50.820 --> 00:16:52.820
this morning what is being done to us.'

00:16:52.820 --> 00:16:54.820
Then he supplicated against the polytheists

00:16:54.820 --> 00:16:56.820
of Quraysh, saying:

00:16:56.820 --> 00:16:58.820
'O Allah, count the disbelievers

00:16:58.820 --> 00:17:00.820
of Quraysh in number,

00:17:00.820 --> 00:17:02.820
destroy them piecemeal,

00:17:02.820 --> 00:17:04.819
and leave not a single one of them.'

00:17:04.819 --> 00:17:06.859
When Abu Sufyan heard

00:17:06.859 --> 00:17:08.859
his supplication,

00:17:08.859 --> 00:17:10.859
he threw his son Mu'awiyah to the ground

00:17:10.859 --> 00:17:12.859
out of fear of his invocation,

00:17:12.859 --> 00:17:14.859
as the Arabs used to do

00:17:14.859 --> 00:17:16.859
in the Jahiliyyah.

00:17:16.859 --> 00:17:19.019
Then they executed him,

00:17:19.019 --> 00:17:21.019
and Khubayb joined his five brothers

00:17:21.019 --> 00:17:23.019
who had preceded him,

00:17:23.019 --> 00:17:25.019
passing on to his Lord,

00:17:25.019 --> 00:17:29.609
well-pleased and pleasing to Him.

00:17:29.609 --> 00:17:31.609
'May Allah send blessings upon those who

00:17:31.609 --> 00:17:33.859
followed one another

00:17:33.859 --> 00:17:35.859
on the day of Al-Raji',

00:17:35.859 --> 00:17:37.859
so they were honored and rewarded.'

00:17:37.859 --> 00:17:40.980
Hassan Ibn Thabit.
