00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.450
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

00:00:04.450 --> 00:00:06.450
Mawaddah Association

00:00:06.450 --> 00:00:08.580
presents:

00:00:08.580 --> 00:00:10.580
The Ten Promised Paradise —

00:00:10.580 --> 00:00:14.980
'Ali ibn Abi Talib,

00:00:14.980 --> 00:00:16.980
may Allah be pleased with him.

00:00:16.980 --> 00:00:22.980
"Love of the Companions and the Prophet’s kin is a Sunnah

00:00:22.980 --> 00:00:28.160
by which I meet my Lord when He resurrects me."

00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:31.629
Love of the Companions.

00:00:31.629 --> 00:00:33.630
When the Battle of Siffin came to an end,

00:00:33.630 --> 00:00:35.630
and the Commander of the Faithful,

00:00:35.630 --> 00:00:37.630
'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), returned

00:00:37.630 --> 00:00:39.630
to Kufa,

00:00:39.630 --> 00:00:41.630
there broke away from his army

00:00:41.630 --> 00:00:43.630
eight thousand fighters.

00:00:43.630 --> 00:00:45.630
They rejected the arbitration,

00:00:45.630 --> 00:00:47.630
saying,

00:00:47.630 --> 00:00:49.630
"Judgment belongs to none but Allah!"

00:00:49.630 --> 00:00:52.020
On a Friday,

00:00:52.020 --> 00:00:54.020
while 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)

00:00:54.020 --> 00:00:56.020
was upon the pulpit delivering a sermon to the people,

00:00:56.020 --> 00:00:58.020
a man suddenly stood up

00:00:58.020 --> 00:01:00.020
and said,

00:01:00.020 --> 00:01:02.020
"Judgment belongs to none but Allah!"

00:01:02.020 --> 00:01:04.019
Then another stood up

00:01:04.019 --> 00:01:06.019
and shouted,

00:01:06.019 --> 00:01:08.019
"Judgment belongs to none but Allah!"

00:01:08.019 --> 00:01:10.019
Then men rose from various corners of the mosque,

00:01:10.019 --> 00:01:12.019
echoing the very same cry.

00:01:12.019 --> 00:01:14.019
'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)

00:01:14.019 --> 00:01:16.019
gestured to them with his hand,

00:01:16.019 --> 00:01:18.019
commanded them to sit down,

00:01:18.019 --> 00:01:20.019
and said:

00:01:20.019 --> 00:01:22.019
"Indeed, judgment belongs to none but Allah.

00:01:22.019 --> 00:01:24.019
A statement of truth

00:01:24.019 --> 00:01:26.019
by which falsehood is intended!

00:01:26.019 --> 00:01:28.019
The judgment of Allah

00:01:28.019 --> 00:01:30.019
is awaited regarding you.

00:01:30.019 --> 00:01:34.019
For now, you have three guarantees from me as long as you remain with us:

00:01:34.019 --> 00:01:36.019
we will not bar you from the mosques of Allah

00:01:36.019 --> 00:01:38.019
wherein His name is mentioned;

00:01:38.019 --> 00:01:40.019
we will not deny you

00:01:40.019 --> 00:01:42.019
your share of the spoils of war as long as your hands

00:01:42.019 --> 00:01:44.019
are joined with ours;

00:01:44.019 --> 00:01:46.019
and we will not initiate fighting against you until

00:01:46.019 --> 00:01:48.019
you fight us."

00:01:48.019 --> 00:01:50.019
He then continued his sermon.

00:01:50.019 --> 00:01:52.689
These Kharijites withdrew

00:01:52.689 --> 00:01:54.689
from Kufa,

00:01:54.689 --> 00:01:56.689
abandoned the army of the Commander

00:01:56.689 --> 00:01:58.689
of the Faithful, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib

00:01:58.689 --> 00:02:00.689
(may Allah be pleased with him),

00:02:00.689 --> 00:02:02.689
and encamped at a place called Harura'.

00:02:02.689 --> 00:02:04.689
For this reason,

00:02:04.689 --> 00:02:06.689
they were called the Haruriyyah.

00:02:06.689 --> 00:02:08.689
They were among

00:02:08.689 --> 00:02:10.689
the most intensely devoted of people

00:02:10.689 --> 00:02:12.689
in worship:

00:02:12.689 --> 00:02:14.689
their faces were gaunt from staying up at night in prayer,

00:02:14.689 --> 00:02:16.689
their hands and knees were calloused

00:02:16.689 --> 00:02:18.689
from extensive prostration,

00:02:18.689 --> 00:02:20.689
and their lips were parched

00:02:20.689 --> 00:02:22.689
from their constant recitation of the Qur'an.

00:02:22.689 --> 00:02:24.689
Yet, they were

00:02:24.689 --> 00:02:26.689
just as the Prophet

00:02:26.689 --> 00:02:28.689
(peace be upon him) described when he said:

00:02:28.689 --> 00:02:30.689
"There will emerge among you a people

00:02:30.689 --> 00:02:32.689
compared to whose prayer

00:02:32.689 --> 00:02:34.689
you would belittle your own prayer,

00:02:34.689 --> 00:02:36.689
your fasting compared to their fasting,

00:02:36.689 --> 00:02:38.689
and your deeds compared to their deeds.

00:02:38.689 --> 00:02:40.689
They recite the Qur'an,

00:02:40.689 --> 00:02:42.689
but it does not surpass their collarbones.

00:02:42.689 --> 00:02:44.689
They pass through the religion

00:02:44.689 --> 00:02:46.689
just as an arrow passes

00:02:46.689 --> 00:02:48.750
straight through the target" —

00:02:48.750 --> 00:02:50.750
meaning they depart from the religion

00:02:50.750 --> 00:02:52.750
as rapidly as an arrow leaves the bow,

00:02:52.750 --> 00:02:54.879
swift and clean.

00:02:54.879 --> 00:02:56.879
And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

00:02:56.879 --> 00:02:58.879
"If I were to reach them,

00:02:58.879 --> 00:03:00.879
I would surely slaughter them as the people of 'Ad were destroyed."

00:03:00.879 --> 00:03:02.879
He also said:

00:03:02.879 --> 00:03:04.879
"Fighting them is an obligation

00:03:04.879 --> 00:03:06.879
upon every Muslim."

00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:09.520
The Commander of the Faithful,

00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:11.520
'Ali ibn Abi Talib

00:03:11.520 --> 00:03:13.520
(may Allah be pleased with him), dispatched to them

00:03:13.520 --> 00:03:15.520
the scholar of the Ummah and the exegete

00:03:15.520 --> 00:03:17.520
of the Qur'an, 'Abdullah

00:03:17.520 --> 00:03:19.520
ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father),

00:03:19.520 --> 00:03:21.520
to debate with them

00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:23.520
and engage them in dialogue,

00:03:23.520 --> 00:03:25.520
so that it might influence them.

00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:27.620
So there went out to them

00:03:27.620 --> 00:03:29.620
'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him

00:03:29.620 --> 00:03:31.620
and his father),

00:03:31.620 --> 00:03:33.620
having dressed in the finest

00:03:33.620 --> 00:03:35.620
Yemeni garments.

00:03:35.620 --> 00:03:37.620
He came upon them where

00:03:37.620 --> 00:03:39.680
they were gathered,

00:03:39.680 --> 00:03:41.680
and they said, "Welcome,

00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:43.680
O Ibn 'Abbas!

00:03:43.680 --> 00:03:45.680
What is this fine cloak you are wearing?"

00:03:45.680 --> 00:03:47.680
He said to them,

00:03:47.680 --> 00:03:49.680
"What fault do you find in me?

00:03:49.680 --> 00:03:51.680
I have seen upon the Messenger of Allah

00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:53.680
(peace be upon him) the very finest

00:03:53.680 --> 00:03:55.680
of garments."

00:03:55.680 --> 00:03:57.680
And he recited the words of the Exalted:

00:03:57.680 --> 00:03:59.680
"Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment

00:03:59.680 --> 00:04:01.680
of Allah which He has produced

00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:03.680
for His servants, and the good things

00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:05.680
of provision?'"

00:04:05.680 --> 00:04:07.680
They asked, "What brought you here?"

00:04:07.680 --> 00:04:09.680
He said:

00:04:09.680 --> 00:04:11.680
"I have come to you from

00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:13.680
the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) —

00:04:13.680 --> 00:04:15.680
from the Emigrants and the Ansar —

00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:17.680
and from

00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:19.680
the cousin of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:21.680
and his son-in-law,

00:04:21.680 --> 00:04:23.680
to convey to you what they say,

00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:25.680
and so that you may tell me what you say.

00:04:25.680 --> 00:04:27.680
For upon them

00:04:27.680 --> 00:04:29.680
the Qur'an descended,

00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:31.680
and they understand its interpretation better than you do,

00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:33.680
whereas there is not among you

00:04:33.680 --> 00:04:35.680
a single one of them.

00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:37.680
Tell me: what grievance do you hold

00:04:37.680 --> 00:04:39.680
against the cousin of the Messenger of Allah

00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:41.680
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),

00:04:41.680 --> 00:04:43.680
his son-in-law, the Emigrants,

00:04:43.680 --> 00:04:45.779
and the Ansar?"

00:04:45.779 --> 00:04:47.779
They said, "We hold against him

00:04:47.779 --> 00:04:49.779
three things."

00:04:49.779 --> 00:04:51.779
He asked, "What are they?"

00:04:51.779 --> 00:04:53.779
They said, "As for one of them,

00:04:53.779 --> 00:04:55.779
he appointed men

00:04:55.779 --> 00:04:57.779
to arbitrate in the matter of Allah,

00:04:57.779 --> 00:04:59.779
yet Allah says:

00:04:59.779 --> 00:05:01.779
'Judgment belongs to none but Allah.'

00:05:01.779 --> 00:05:03.779
What do men have to do with judgment?"

00:05:03.779 --> 00:05:05.779
Ibn 'Abbas

00:05:05.779 --> 00:05:07.779
(may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said,

00:05:07.779 --> 00:05:09.839
"That is one. What else?"

00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:11.839
They said, "As for

00:05:11.839 --> 00:05:13.839
the second,

00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:15.839
he fought, yet took neither captives nor spoils of war.

00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:17.839
If they were disbelievers,

00:05:17.839 --> 00:05:19.839
their captivity was lawful;

00:05:19.839 --> 00:05:21.839
and if they were believers,

00:05:21.839 --> 00:05:23.839
neither their captivity

00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:25.839
nor fighting them was lawful."

00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:27.939
He said, "That is two.

00:05:27.939 --> 00:05:29.939
What is the third?"

00:05:29.939 --> 00:05:32.100
They said, "He erased

00:05:32.100 --> 00:05:34.100
from himself the title

00:05:34.100 --> 00:05:36.100
of Commander of the Faithful.

00:05:36.100 --> 00:05:38.100
If he is not the Commander of the Faithful,

00:05:38.100 --> 00:05:40.100
then he must be the commander of the disbelievers."

00:05:40.100 --> 00:05:42.100
He said,

00:05:42.100 --> 00:05:44.100
"Do you have any grievance

00:05:44.100 --> 00:05:46.100
other than this?"

00:05:46.100 --> 00:05:48.100
They said, "This is sufficient

00:05:48.100 --> 00:05:50.100
for us."

00:05:50.100 --> 00:05:52.100
He said to them,

00:05:52.100 --> 00:05:54.100
"Tell me: if I recite to you

00:05:54.100 --> 00:05:56.100
from the Book of Allah

00:05:56.100 --> 00:05:58.100
and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

00:05:58.100 --> 00:06:00.100
that which refutes your claim,

00:06:00.100 --> 00:06:02.100
will you recant?"

00:06:02.100 --> 00:06:04.100
They said, "Yes."

00:06:04.100 --> 00:06:06.100
He (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

00:06:06.100 --> 00:06:08.100
"As for your statement that

00:06:08.100 --> 00:06:10.100
he appointed men to arbitrate in the matter of Allah,

00:06:10.100 --> 00:06:12.100
I recite to you

00:06:12.100 --> 00:06:14.100
that Allah has delegated

00:06:14.100 --> 00:06:16.100
His judgment to men

00:06:16.100 --> 00:06:18.100
over something worth merely a quarter of a dirham;

00:06:18.100 --> 00:06:20.100
for Allah, Blessed and Exalted, commanded

00:06:20.100 --> 00:06:22.100
that they arbitrate concerning it.

00:06:22.100 --> 00:06:24.100
Have you not considered the word of Allah, Blessed and Exalted:

00:06:42.100 --> 00:06:44.100
'Judged by two just men

00:06:44.100 --> 00:06:46.100
among you as an offering

00:06:46.100 --> 00:06:48.100
“O ye who believe! Kill no wild game while ye are on the pilgrimage. Whoso of you killeth it of set purpose he shall pay its forfeit in the equivalent of that which he hath killed, of domestic animals, the judge to be two men among you known for justice, (the forfeit) to be brought as an offering to the Ka'bah; or, for expiation, he shall feed poor persons, or the equivalent thereof in fasting, that he may taste the evil consequences of his deed. Allah forgiveth whatever (of this kind) may have happened in the past, but whoso relapseth, Allah will take retribution from him. Allah is Mighty, Able to Requite (the wrong).” (5:95)

00:06:48.100 --> 00:06:50.100
or an expiation: the feeding of needy people

00:06:50.100 --> 00:06:52.100
or the equivalent of that

00:06:52.100 --> 00:06:54.100
in fasting,

00:06:54.100 --> 00:06:56.100
that he may taste

00:06:56.100 --> 00:06:58.100
the consequence of his deed.'

00:06:58.100 --> 00:07:00.100
It was of the judgment of Allah

00:07:00.100 --> 00:07:02.100
that He delegated it to men

00:07:02.100 --> 00:07:04.100
to judge therein,

00:07:04.100 --> 00:07:06.100
though had He willed, He would have decided it Himself.

00:07:06.100 --> 00:07:08.100
I adjure you by Allah:

00:07:08.100 --> 00:07:10.100
is the judgment of men to bring reconciliation,

00:07:10.100 --> 00:07:12.100
or regarding a rabbit, more worthy?"

00:07:12.100 --> 00:07:14.100
They said, "Indeed,

00:07:14.100 --> 00:07:16.100
is clearly superior?"

00:07:16.100 --> 00:07:18.100
Then he continued,

00:07:18.100 --> 00:07:20.100
"And concerning a dispute between a man and his wife,

00:07:20.100 --> 00:07:22.100
Allah Almighty says:

00:07:22.100 --> 00:07:24.100
'And if you fear a breach

00:07:24.100 --> 00:07:26.100
between them,

00:07:26.100 --> 00:07:28.100
appoint an arbitrator from his folk

00:07:28.100 --> 00:07:30.100
appoint an arbitrator from his folk

00:07:30.100 --> 00:07:32.100
and an arbitrator from her folk;

00:07:32.100 --> 00:07:34.100
if they desire

00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:36.100
reconciliation,

00:07:36.100 --> 00:07:38.100
Allah will bring

00:07:38.100 --> 00:07:40.100
Allah will bring about harmony between them.

00:07:40.100 --> 00:07:42.100
Truly Allah

00:07:42.100 --> 00:07:44.100
has ever been All-Knowing,

00:07:44.100 --> 00:07:46.100
All-Aware.'

00:07:46.100 --> 00:07:48.100
I adjure you by Allah:

00:07:48.100 --> 00:07:50.100
is men arbitrating to reconcile

00:07:50.100 --> 00:07:52.100
between people and prevent the shedding of their blood

00:07:52.100 --> 00:07:54.100
superior, or their arbitrating over the private parts

00:07:54.100 --> 00:07:56.100
of a woman?" The people fell silent,

00:07:56.100 --> 00:07:58.100
so he asked them,

00:07:58.100 --> 00:08:00.100
"Have I answered this point of yours?"

00:08:00.100 --> 00:08:02.129
They replied, "Yes."

00:08:02.129 --> 00:08:04.129
Then he said,

00:08:04.129 --> 00:08:06.129
"As for your saying that he fought

00:08:06.129 --> 00:08:08.129
but took neither captives nor spoils of war:

00:08:08.129 --> 00:08:10.129
would you take your mother 'A'ishah captive?

00:08:10.129 --> 00:08:12.129
Would you deem permissible

00:08:12.129 --> 00:08:14.129
to do with her what you deem permissible

00:08:14.129 --> 00:08:16.129
with other women, when she is your mother?

00:08:16.129 --> 00:08:18.129
For if you say,

00:08:18.129 --> 00:08:20.129
'We deem permissible with her what

00:08:20.129 --> 00:08:22.129
we deem permissible with others,'

00:08:22.129 --> 00:08:24.129
you have committed disbelief.

00:08:24.129 --> 00:08:26.129
And if you say, 'She is not our mother,'

00:08:26.129 --> 00:08:28.129
you have also committed disbelief,

00:08:28.129 --> 00:08:30.129
for Allah says:

00:08:30.129 --> 00:08:32.129
'The Prophet is closer to the believers

00:08:32.129 --> 00:08:34.129
than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers.'

00:08:34.129 --> 00:09:01.580
Thus you are caught between two grave errors, so find a way out of them!" The men began looking at one another, and he asked, "Have I answered this point?" They replied, "Yes." He then said, "As for your saying that he erased from himself the title 'Commander of the Believers', I shall bring you something that will satisfy you:

00:09:01.580 --> 00:09:15.580
on the day of al-Hudaybiyyah, the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made peace with the polytheists, and he said to 'Ali, 'Write, O 'Ali: This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon.'

00:09:15.580 --> 00:09:37.700
But the polytheists objected, 'Had we known you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have fought you.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 'Erase it, O 'Ali! O Allah, You know that I am the Messenger of Allah. Erase it, O 'Ali, and write: This is what Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah has agreed upon.'

00:09:38.700 --> 00:10:00.860
O people, by Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is better than 'Ali, yet he erased his own title, and erasing it did not divest him of prophethood! Have I answered this point?" They said, "Yes." Consequently, two thousand of them recanted, while the rest persisted in their delusion.

00:10:00.860 --> 00:10:12.470
The Commander of the Believers, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), had forbidden his companions to initiate fighting against the Kharijites unless they committed an act of violence.

00:10:13.470 --> 00:10:19.470
Meanwhile, 'Ali was preoccupied with the affair of Mu'awiyah and those with him in the Levant.

00:10:19.470 --> 00:10:35.470
Yet these Kharijites spread widespread corruption across the land; they were scrupulous about trivial matters while boldly committing major atrocities, shedding sacred blood and terrorizing peaceful people.

00:10:36.470 --> 00:10:47.470
Among their atrocities was that they came upon 'Abdullah ibn Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him and his father), a companion of the Messenger of Allah and the son of his Companion.

00:10:48.470 --> 00:10:57.539
They seized him along with his wife. Then one of them noticed a fallen date on the ground, picked it up, and placed it into his mouth.

00:10:57.539 --> 00:11:05.539
Another said to him, "That date belongs to a non-Muslim under covenant! On what grounds did you make it permissible for yourself?" So he cast it out of his mouth.

00:11:06.539 --> 00:11:15.539
'Abdullah ibn Khabbab said to them, "Shall I not point you to what is of far greater sanctity to you than this?"

00:11:15.539 --> 00:11:26.539
They said, "Yes." He said, "I am of far greater sanctity than this!" But they paid no heed to his words; they brought him forward and struck off his head.

00:11:27.539 --> 00:11:33.539
Then they took his pregnant wife, ripped open her belly, and cast out her fetus.

00:11:34.730 --> 00:11:42.730
When the Commander of the Believers heard of this, he sent word to them: "Hand over to us those among you who killed 'Abdullah ibn Khabbab."

00:11:42.730 --> 00:11:54.730
They brazenly answered, "All of us killed him!" 'Ali asked, "Did all of you truly kill him?" They said, "Yes." He proclaimed, "Allahu Akbar!"

00:11:55.730 --> 00:12:05.399
He then ordered his companions to prepare to fight them. The Commander of the Believers mounted the pulpit and delivered a sermon to the people,

00:12:05.399 --> 00:12:15.399
saying, "What do you think? Shall you march against the people of the Levant, or turn back toward those who have endangered your families left behind?"

00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:24.399
They cried, "No, rather we must turn back against these Kharijites!" So he said, "March against them in the Name of Allah!

00:12:25.399 --> 00:12:33.399
For I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, 'A faction will break away at a time of discord among the people;

00:12:33.399 --> 00:12:42.399
they will be fought by the closer of the two parties to the truth. Their distinguishing sign among them is a man whose hand is like a woman's breast.'"

00:12:43.399 --> 00:12:56.070
So the army advanced toward them until both forces met at al-Nahrawan. The Battle of al-Nahrawan took place in Safar of the thirty-eighth year of the Prophetic Hijrah.

00:12:56.070 --> 00:13:04.070
The leader of the Kharijites was 'Abdullah ibn Wahb al-Rasibi, and the two sides clashed in fierce combat,

00:13:05.070 --> 00:13:11.070
to the extent that 'Ali's cavalry began to falter and fall back under the fierce onslaught of the Kharijites.

00:13:12.070 --> 00:13:23.070
Seeing this, 'Ali called out, "O people! If you are fighting merely for my sake, by Allah, I have nothing with which to reward you!

00:13:23.070 --> 00:13:29.139
But if you are fighting for the sake of Allah, then let this not be your fighting!"

00:13:30.139 --> 00:13:38.259
At that, the army launched a single, decisive charge until they routed the Kharijites, slaying most of them, and praise be to Allah.

00:13:39.259 --> 00:13:46.360
When the battle ended, 'Ali said, "Search among them for the mutilated man,

00:13:47.360 --> 00:13:50.360
meaning the man whose hand resembles a woman's breast."

00:13:50.360 --> 00:13:52.360
They searched for him but could not find him.

00:13:53.360 --> 00:14:01.389
So 'Ali himself set out to search until he came upon a heap of corpses piled one on top of another.

00:14:02.389 --> 00:14:11.389
He said, "Move them aside!" And beneath them, right against the ground, they found him matching the exact description given by the Prophet (peace be upon him).

00:14:12.389 --> 00:14:16.389
Thereupon, 'Ali proclaimed the Takbir, and the people joined in crying "Allahu Akbar!"

00:14:17.389 --> 00:14:26.389
Then he said, "Allah spoke the truth, and His Messenger conveyed it! By Allah, I neither lied nor was I lied to!"

00:14:27.899 --> 00:14:35.899
The Commander of the Believers, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, returned to Kufah after crushing the Kharijite uprising.

00:14:36.899 --> 00:14:43.899
But as the days passed, the Commander of the Believers observed that matters had grown deeply distressing for him;

00:14:43.899 --> 00:14:52.899
his army became mutinous, and the people of Iraq opposed him, failed to stand by him, and even stirred up dissent against him.

00:14:53.899 --> 00:15:00.899
All of this occurred while their leader was 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, the best of all people on earth in that era!

00:15:01.899 --> 00:15:08.899
In spite of this, they deserted him and let him down, until he grew weary of life and longed for death.

00:15:08.899 --> 00:15:15.970
He would frequently say, "What holds back their most wretched one? Why does he not come to kill?"

00:15:16.970 --> 00:15:19.970
meaning: "What is their most wretched one waiting for before he assassinates me?"

00:15:20.970 --> 00:15:29.970
This was because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had said to him one day, while 'Ammar ibn Yasir was with them:

00:15:30.970 --> 00:15:36.970
"Shall I not inform you both of the most wretched of all people?" They replied, "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah!"

00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:44.000
The Prophet said, "The pale-skinned wretch of Thamud who hamstrung the she-camel,

00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:53.000
and the one who will strike you, O 'Ali, upon this—meaning the crown of his head—until this—meaning his beard—is drenched from it."

00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:58.059
And 'Ali was heard supplicating, saying:

00:15:59.059 --> 00:16:04.059
"O Allah, I have grown weary of them and they have grown weary of me; I am sick of them and they are sick of me!

00:16:05.059 --> 00:16:07.059
Relieve me of them, and relieve them of me!

00:16:08.059 --> 00:16:14.059
What prevents their most wretched one from dying it with blood?" and he placed his hand upon his beard.

00:16:15.059 --> 00:16:26.740
Meanwhile, the Kharijites had hatched a plot to assassinate 'Ali, Mu'awiyah, and 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them all).

00:16:27.740 --> 00:16:35.740
They assigned three men from among themselves for this task: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam al-Muradi, al-Burak ibn 'Abdullah al-Tamimi,

00:16:36.740 --> 00:16:38.740
and 'Amr ibn Bakr al-Tamimi.

00:16:38.740 --> 00:16:47.740
They gathered in Mecca and swore a pact to kill these three Companions and rid the people of them.

00:16:48.740 --> 00:16:53.740
'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam said, "I will take care of 'Ali ibn Abi Talib for you."

00:16:54.740 --> 00:16:57.740
Al-Burak said, "I will take care of Mu'awiyah for you."

00:16:58.740 --> 00:17:02.740
And 'Amr ibn Bakr said, "I shall spare you the trouble of 'Amr ibn al-'As."

00:17:03.740 --> 00:17:09.740
They made a solemn pledge to execute their mission or perish in the attempt,

00:17:10.740 --> 00:17:15.740
appointing the night of the seventeenth of Ramadan to carry out their plot.

00:17:16.930 --> 00:17:21.930
Ibn Muljam departed for Kufah to execute his sinister mission.

00:17:22.930 --> 00:17:23.930
On the appointed night,

00:17:24.930 --> 00:17:29.930
'Ali ibn Abi Talib came out of his home for the Fajr prayer,

00:17:29.930 --> 00:17:36.930
calling out, "O people, prayer! Prayer!" as was his daily habit.

00:17:37.930 --> 00:17:43.930
Ibn Muljam intercepted him, shouting, "Judgment belongs to Allah, O 'Ali, not to you!"

00:17:44.930 --> 00:17:47.930
He then struck him on the head with his sword and fled.

00:17:48.930 --> 00:17:51.930
The people pursued him until they captured him and brought him back,

00:17:52.930 --> 00:17:55.930
while they carried 'Ali to his house.

00:17:55.930 --> 00:18:01.930
'Ali said, "Imprison this man. If I die, execute him;

00:18:02.930 --> 00:18:05.930
but if I live, wounds are subject to just retribution."

00:18:06.930 --> 00:18:12.960
'Ali remained in this condition throughout Friday and Saturday night,

00:18:13.960 --> 00:18:14.960
and passed away on the eve of Sunday,

00:18:15.960 --> 00:18:21.960
when eleven nights remained of the month of Ramadan in the year forty of the Hijrah,

00:18:22.960 --> 00:18:25.960
at the age of fifty-eight.

00:18:27.599 --> 00:18:32.599
Before his death, the Commander of the Believers, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, bequeathed

00:18:33.599 --> 00:18:36.599
that musk he had kept in his possession be placed in his embalming perfumes (hanut),

00:18:37.599 --> 00:18:43.599
saying, "This is the remainder of the embalming perfume of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)."

00:18:44.599 --> 00:18:47.599
His son al-Hasan led his funeral prayer,

00:18:48.599 --> 00:18:50.599
and he was buried at the governor's residence (Dar al-Imarah) in Kufah,

00:18:50.599 --> 00:18:54.599
out of fear that the Kharijites might unearth his grave.

00:18:55.599 --> 00:19:01.210
Al-Hasan ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) said after burying his father:

00:19:02.210 --> 00:19:06.210
"A man has departed from you today whom none of the earliest generations surpassed in knowledge,

00:19:07.210 --> 00:19:08.210
nor can any of the later generations ever equal.

00:19:09.210 --> 00:19:12.210
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:19:13.210 --> 00:19:15.210
would dispatch him, handing him the banner,

00:19:16.210 --> 00:19:18.210
and he would not return until Allah had granted him victory.

00:19:18.210 --> 00:19:21.210
And he left behind neither gold nor silver

00:19:22.210 --> 00:19:25.210
save for seven hundred dirhams remaining from his stipend,

00:19:26.210 --> 00:19:28.210
which he had set aside to purchase a servant for his family."

00:19:51.089 --> 00:19:59.089
and Ibn 'Awf, al-Zubayr, and Abu 'Ubaydah,

00:20:00.089 --> 00:20:04.089
the two Sa'ds, and the caliphs.
