00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

00:00:04.379 --> 00:00:10.509
Mawaddah Association presents: The Ten Promised Paradise.

00:00:13.750 --> 00:00:16.850
Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him.

00:00:17.850 --> 00:00:21.850
Love for the Companions and the Prophet's kin is a established Sunnah,

00:00:22.850 --> 00:00:26.850
By which I hope to meet my Lord when He resurrects me.

00:00:28.359 --> 00:00:30.359
Love for the Companions and the Prophet's kin...

00:00:30.359 --> 00:00:32.359
Here is the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah,

00:00:33.359 --> 00:00:35.359
Where the people gathered to deliberate over a momentous matter:

00:00:36.359 --> 00:00:38.359
The matter of the Caliphate.

00:00:39.810 --> 00:00:45.810
The Companions differed as to who should be the Caliph over them after the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:00:46.810 --> 00:00:50.810
The Ansar said, "Let there be a leader from among us, and a leader from among you."

00:00:51.810 --> 00:00:56.810
But Abu Bakr said, "No, rather we are the leaders and you are the viziers;

00:00:56.810 --> 00:01:00.810
They [Quraysh] hold the most central dwelling among the Arabs and the noblest lineages.

00:01:01.810 --> 00:01:04.810
So pledge allegiance either to 'Umar or to Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah."

00:01:05.810 --> 00:01:08.840
'Umar replied, "Rather, we pledge allegiance to you!

00:01:09.840 --> 00:01:15.840
For you are our master, the best of us, and the most beloved of us to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."

00:01:16.840 --> 00:01:19.840
So 'Umar took his hand and pledged allegiance to him, and the people pledged allegiance to him.

00:01:20.840 --> 00:01:25.290
Yes, as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, was given the pledge of Caliphate,

00:01:25.290 --> 00:01:27.290
And who could be more deserving of it than him?

00:01:28.290 --> 00:01:34.290
He was the strong and trustworthy, the primary vizier of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:01:35.290 --> 00:01:37.290
And the object of his trust and choice.

00:01:38.450 --> 00:01:40.450
Then Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up

00:01:41.450 --> 00:01:45.450
And delivered a sermon to the people, saying after praising and glorifying Allah:

00:01:46.450 --> 00:01:47.450
"O people!

00:01:48.450 --> 00:01:51.450
I have been appointed as your leader, though I am not the best among you.

00:01:51.450 --> 00:01:55.450
If I do well, then assist me; and if I do wrong, then set me straight.

00:01:56.450 --> 00:01:59.450
Truthfulness is a sacred trust, and lying is betrayal.

00:02:00.450 --> 00:02:04.450
The weak among you is strong in my sight until I secure his right for him,

00:02:05.450 --> 00:02:10.449
And the strong among you is weak in my sight until I take what is due from him.

00:02:11.449 --> 00:02:13.449
No people ever abandon jihad in the cause of Allah

00:02:14.449 --> 00:02:16.449
Except that Allah strikes them with humiliation;

00:02:17.449 --> 00:02:19.449
Nor does immorality ever spread among a people

00:02:19.449 --> 00:02:21.449
Except that Allah afflicts them all with tribulation.

00:02:22.449 --> 00:02:25.509
Obey me so long as I obey Allah and His Messenger;

00:02:26.509 --> 00:02:30.509
But if I disobey Allah and His Messenger, then you owe me no obedience."

00:02:31.509 --> 00:02:38.120
Various factions of the Arabs apostatized and withheld the zakat after the death of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:41.120
Yet Allah kept firm the people of the two cities:

00:02:42.120 --> 00:02:43.120
Mecca and Medina,

00:02:44.120 --> 00:02:45.120
As well as the people of at-Ta'if,

00:02:46.120 --> 00:02:48.120
Along with a few scattered individuals here and there.

00:02:48.120 --> 00:02:50.250
Thus the extraordinary character of Abu Bakr shone forth—

00:02:51.250 --> 00:02:53.250
The character of a courageous leader

00:02:54.250 --> 00:02:56.250
Who was nurtured in the prophetic school of Muhammad

00:02:57.250 --> 00:02:59.250
And was its most distinguished student.

00:03:00.250 --> 00:03:02.250
For the very first command he issued

00:03:03.250 --> 00:03:05.250
Was the dispatch of the army of Usamah, may Allah be pleased with him,

00:03:06.250 --> 00:03:10.250
That very army which the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had ordered.

00:03:11.250 --> 00:03:13.250
The people spoke to him regarding that,

00:03:14.250 --> 00:03:15.250
Fearing that Medina would be left undefended

00:03:15.250 --> 00:03:17.250
And become an easy target for its enemies.

00:03:18.250 --> 00:03:23.250
But he declared, "By Allah, even if dogs were to drag the anklets of the women of Medina,

00:03:24.250 --> 00:03:29.250
I would never turn back an army dispatched by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him!

00:03:30.250 --> 00:03:36.250
Do you command me to be the first to untie a knot tied by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him?"

00:03:37.250 --> 00:03:39.250
He also ordered the fighting against the apostates

00:03:40.250 --> 00:03:42.250
And against anyone who differentiated between prayer and zakat.

00:03:42.250 --> 00:03:44.250
Some of the Companions objected, saying,

00:03:45.250 --> 00:03:47.250
"How can we fight them when they are Muslims?"

00:03:48.250 --> 00:03:49.250
Abu Bakr responded,

00:03:50.250 --> 00:03:53.250
"That I should fall from the sky to the earth and be snatched away by birds

00:03:54.250 --> 00:03:57.250
Is dearer to me than agreeing with you on this view!"

00:03:58.250 --> 00:04:02.250
And he said to them, "By Allah, even if all of you abandon me,

00:04:03.250 --> 00:04:06.250
I will fight them alone until my neck is severed!

00:04:07.250 --> 00:04:10.250
Even if they withhold from me a single hobbling cord [of zakat], I will wage jihad against them over it!

00:04:10.250 --> 00:04:13.250
Or do you doubt that the promise of Allah is true?"

00:04:14.250 --> 00:04:19.569
Thus, Allah preserved the integrity of Islam through this stance of as-Siddiq.

00:04:20.569 --> 00:04:22.980
As-Siddiq ordered Usamah's army to march

00:04:23.980 --> 00:04:28.980
Toward its objective that had been designated by the Prophet, peace be upon him, before his demise.

00:04:29.980 --> 00:04:31.980
He ordered guards to be stationed around Medina,

00:04:32.980 --> 00:04:36.980
And Abu Bakr set out walking alongside the army while Usamah was riding.

00:04:37.980 --> 00:04:38.980
Usamah said to him,

00:04:38.980 --> 00:04:43.980
"O successor of the Messenger of Allah, by Allah, you will either ride or I will dismount!"

00:04:44.980 --> 00:04:49.980
He replied, "By Allah, you shall not dismount, and by Allah, I shall not ride!

00:04:50.980 --> 00:04:53.980
What harm is there for me to get my feet dusty in the cause of Allah for an hour?"

00:04:54.980 --> 00:04:59.110
The departure of the army at that moment proved to be of the utmost strategic benefit,

00:05:00.110 --> 00:05:02.110
For they did not pass by any Arab clan

00:05:03.110 --> 00:05:05.110
Except that the clan was awestruck by them and said,

00:05:05.110 --> 00:05:07.110
"Had these people not possessed great strength,

00:05:08.110 --> 00:05:10.110
The likes of these soldiers would never have departed from their midst!

00:05:11.110 --> 00:05:13.110
Let us leave them alone until they engage the Byzantines:

00:05:14.110 --> 00:05:17.110
If the Byzantines are victorious, they will have spared us the burden of fighting them;

00:05:18.110 --> 00:05:21.110
And if Usamah is victorious, then Islam has firmly prevailed."

00:05:22.110 --> 00:05:25.110
Indeed, Usamah's army was victorious,

00:05:26.110 --> 00:05:29.110
And they returned safe and sound, and Islam stood firm.

00:05:30.110 --> 00:05:32.110
During the absence of Usamah's army—

00:05:32.110 --> 00:05:35.689
During the absence of Usamah's army from Medina,

00:05:36.689 --> 00:05:38.689
When most of the Companions were with him—

00:05:39.689 --> 00:05:43.689
Delegations came to Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, in Medina,

00:05:44.689 --> 00:05:47.689
Asking him to exempt them from zakat.

00:05:48.689 --> 00:05:49.689
But he refused their demand,

00:05:50.689 --> 00:05:52.689
So they returned harboring ill intentions.

00:05:53.689 --> 00:05:54.689
Then the rightly-guided Caliph,

00:05:55.689 --> 00:05:57.689
Having read treachery in the faces of those people,

00:05:58.689 --> 00:05:59.689
Perceived their baseness,

00:05:59.689 --> 00:06:01.689
And discerned their malicious intent,

00:06:02.689 --> 00:06:03.689
Said to his companions:

00:06:04.689 --> 00:06:05.689
"The land around you is in disbelief,

00:06:06.689 --> 00:06:08.689
And their delegation has seen how few you are.

00:06:09.689 --> 00:06:10.689
You do not know

00:06:11.689 --> 00:06:13.689
Whether you will be attacked by night or by day,

00:06:14.689 --> 00:06:16.689
And their nearest forces are merely a postal stage away from you.

00:06:17.689 --> 00:06:21.689
These people had hoped that we would accept their terms and make a truce with them,

00:06:22.689 --> 00:06:23.689
But we have rejected their demands

00:06:24.689 --> 00:06:26.689
And repudiated their treaty.

00:06:27.689 --> 00:06:28.689
So be prepared and get ready!"

00:06:29.689 --> 00:06:33.689
As-Siddiq devised a tightly coordinated defensive plan:

00:06:34.689 --> 00:06:37.689
He instructed the people of Medina to spend the night in the Mosque

00:06:38.689 --> 00:06:41.689
So they would be in complete readiness to defend,

00:06:42.689 --> 00:06:46.689
And he organized guards stationed at the mountain passes of Medina,

00:06:47.689 --> 00:06:48.689
Keeping watch around it through the night

00:06:49.689 --> 00:06:51.689
To repel any incoming raid.

00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:55.720
The intuition of as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, proved true:

00:06:55.720 --> 00:06:59.779
Three days after the return of the apostate delegations,

00:07:00.779 --> 00:07:04.779
Having made sure that Usamah's army was far from Medina,

00:07:05.779 --> 00:07:07.779
Some tribes raided Medina by night,

00:07:08.779 --> 00:07:10.779
Leaving part of their force behind at Dhu Husa,

00:07:11.779 --> 00:07:13.779
A place near Medina,

00:07:14.779 --> 00:07:16.779
To serve as rear support and reinforcements.

00:07:17.819 --> 00:07:19.819
The guards at the mountain passes noticed them

00:07:20.819 --> 00:07:22.819
And sent word to as-Siddiq.

00:07:22.819 --> 00:07:25.819
He sent word back to them: "Hold your positions,"

00:07:26.819 --> 00:07:27.819
Which they did.

00:07:28.819 --> 00:07:30.819
Then he marched out toward the enemy with the people from the Mosque,

00:07:31.819 --> 00:07:32.819
Causing the enemy to scatter.

00:07:33.819 --> 00:07:35.819
The Muslims pursued them on their camels

00:07:36.819 --> 00:07:37.819
Until they reached Dhu Husa,

00:07:38.819 --> 00:07:39.819
Where the enemy reinforcements ambushed them

00:07:40.819 --> 00:07:42.819
And rolled inflated skin bags before the camels' faces—

00:07:43.819 --> 00:07:45.819
These were inflated butter-skins,

00:07:46.819 --> 00:07:48.819
Which are the most terrifying things to camels.

00:07:49.819 --> 00:07:51.819
The Muslims' camels bolted while the men were upon them,

00:07:52.819 --> 00:07:54.819
And they lost control of their reins

00:07:55.819 --> 00:07:57.819
Until the camels carried them back into Medina.

00:07:58.819 --> 00:08:00.819
Yet not a single Muslim was thrown or harmed.

00:08:01.939 --> 00:08:03.939
The enemy presumed the Muslims were weakened,

00:08:04.939 --> 00:08:07.939
So they sent the news to their fellow apostates,

00:08:08.939 --> 00:08:09.939
Who rushed to join them,

00:08:10.939 --> 00:08:14.939
Unaware of the decree Allah had willed against them.

00:08:16.139 --> 00:08:18.139
Abu Bakr spent that night preparing;

00:08:19.139 --> 00:08:20.139
He mobilized the people,

00:08:20.139 --> 00:08:22.139
Then set out on foot that very night,

00:08:23.139 --> 00:08:25.139
With an-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin commanding the right flank,

00:08:26.139 --> 00:08:29.139
'Abdullah ibn Muqarrin commanding the left flank,

00:08:30.139 --> 00:08:32.139
Suwayd ibn Muqarrin commanding the rearguard,

00:08:33.139 --> 00:08:34.139
Accompanied by the camel-riders.

00:08:35.139 --> 00:08:36.139
Dawn did not break

00:08:37.139 --> 00:08:39.139
Before they and the enemy stood on the same battlefield.

00:08:40.139 --> 00:08:42.139
The treacherous enemy was caught completely by surprise

00:08:43.139 --> 00:08:46.139
As the swords of the Muslims struck through their ranks.

00:08:47.139 --> 00:08:49.139
By the mid-morning of that day,

00:08:50.139 --> 00:08:52.139
The enemy had turned and fled,

00:08:53.139 --> 00:08:56.139
And the Muslims pursued them until they reached Dhu al-Qassah.

00:08:57.139 --> 00:09:01.139
There, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, left an-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin

00:09:02.139 --> 00:09:04.139
Along with a detachment of Muslims,

00:09:05.139 --> 00:09:07.139
And returned with the rest of the people to Medina.

00:09:08.139 --> 00:09:13.740
Then as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, resolved fearlessly to fight the apostates:

00:09:14.740 --> 00:09:20.740
He tied eleven battle standards under the command of Khalid and the sincere heroes,

00:09:21.740 --> 00:09:23.740
Ordering them to eliminate the apostates

00:09:24.740 --> 00:09:26.740
Across all regions of the Arabian Peninsula.

00:09:27.740 --> 00:09:31.740
Among the instructions as-Siddiq gave to these armies, he said:

00:09:32.740 --> 00:09:33.740
"O people!

00:09:34.740 --> 00:09:35.740
Halt, for I give you ten admonitions,

00:09:36.740 --> 00:09:37.740
So memorize them from me:

00:09:38.740 --> 00:09:40.740
Do not betray, do not embezzle spoils of war,

00:09:40.740 --> 00:09:42.740
Do not act treacherously, do not mutilate the dead,

00:09:43.740 --> 00:09:47.740
Do not kill a young child, an old man, or a woman,

00:09:48.740 --> 00:09:50.740
Do not uproot palm trees nor burn them,

00:09:51.740 --> 00:09:53.740
Do not cut down a fruit-bearing tree,

00:09:54.740 --> 00:09:59.740
And do not slaughter a sheep, a cow, or a camel except for food.

00:10:00.740 --> 00:10:04.740
You will surely pass by people who have devoted themselves to monasteries;

00:10:05.740 --> 00:10:07.740
Leave them to that which they have devoted themselves."

00:10:08.740 --> 00:10:14.100
The army dispatched by Abu Bakr marched under the command of Khalid ibn al-Walid

00:10:15.100 --> 00:10:17.100
To fight Musaylimah the Liar.

00:10:18.100 --> 00:10:19.100
The two opposing forces clashed

00:10:20.100 --> 00:10:23.100
And fought fiercely at al-Yamamah,

00:10:24.100 --> 00:10:26.100
Until Allah extinguished the sedition of Musaylimah

00:10:27.100 --> 00:10:29.100
By the sword of Khalid and those with him.

00:10:30.100 --> 00:10:35.100
During that battle, many of the Companions who were memorizers of the Qur'an were martyred—

00:10:35.100 --> 00:10:38.100
Said to be seven hundred, or even more.

00:10:39.100 --> 00:10:44.100
Thus began the consideration to compile the Qur'an before the remaining memorizers were killed,

00:10:45.100 --> 00:10:49.100
Which will be the opening topic of our next session, Allah willing.

00:11:06.789 --> 00:11:08.789
[Chant:] They are the distinguished men:

00:11:09.789 --> 00:11:10.789
They are Talhah,

00:11:11.789 --> 00:11:13.789
Ibn 'Awf,

00:11:14.789 --> 00:11:16.789
Az-Zubayr,

00:11:17.789 --> 00:11:18.789
Abu 'Ubaydah,

00:11:19.789 --> 00:11:23.789
The two Sa'ds, and the Caliphs.
