A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Muhajirun (Emigrant) Companions.
During the Jahiliyyah, I was an ally to the Banu Asad ibn 'Abd al-'Uzza of Makkah.
I used to trade in food.
I owned a number of slaves.
I was among the archers known for their skill.
I embraced Islam early on.
I migrated to Madinah.
I witnessed the Battle of Badr and all subsequent campaigns with the Prophet, peace be upon him.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, sent me with a letter to al-Muqawqis, the King of Egypt.
He did not accept Islam.
However, he responded graciously.
He sent back with me gifts for the Prophet, peace be upon him.
Among them was Maria, the mother of Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
During the Battle of Uhud,
I heard someone shouting that Muhammad had been killed.
The matter terrified me.
I rushed to his location, gripped by panic.
It was as if my soul had departed.
I found him, peace be upon him, wiping the blood from his face.
I asked, "Who did this to you, O Messenger of Allah?"
He replied, "'Utbah ibn Abi Waqqas."
"He threw a stone at me,"
"shattering my face and wounding my eye."
I asked, "In which direction did 'Utbah go?"
He pointed out the direction he had taken.
I pursued him until I caught up with him.
I struck him with my sword,
and severed his head.
I dismounted, took his head, his spoils, and his horse,
and brought them to the Prophet, peace be upon him.
He was pleased by this, prayed for me, and said,
"May Allah be pleased with you, may Allah be pleased with you."
He granted me his spoils.
When the Prophet, peace be upon him, intended
to set out for the conquest of Makkah,
I was overcome by fear for my family who were still there.
So, I secretly sent a letter to the Quraysh
via a polytheist woman,
informing them of the Prophet's intention, peace be upon him,
to march for the conquest of Makkah.
Allah informed His Prophet of this.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, summoned
'Ali, al-Zubayr, and al-Miqdad,
and said to them,
"Go until you catch a woman"
"at the garden of Khakh,"
"who carries a letter to the Quraysh."
"Bring it to me."
They set out until they caught her where the Prophet, peace be upon him, had told them.
They demanded the letter from her.
She denied having it.
'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said to her,
"By Allah, the Messenger of Allah has not lied."
"Either you produce the letter,"
"or we will remove your garments."
When she saw their resolve,
she said to them,
"Turn away."
She undid her braids,
and took it out from her hair.
They brought the letter to the Prophet, peace be upon him.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, summoned me
and said,
"What prompted you to do this?"
I said,
"O Messenger of Allah,"
"do not be hasty with me."
"By Allah, I did not do this"
"out of disbelief or apostasy,"
"nor out of contentment with disbelief after Islam."
"But I have children and some relatives in Makkah,"
"and I was a stranger among you, O people of Quraysh,"
"so I wanted to do them a favor"
"by which they might protect my children and relatives."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to his Companions,
"He has spoken the truth."
"Do not say anything but good."
'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
"Permit me, O Messenger of Allah, to kill him."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
"No."
"He witnessed Badr."
"And you do not know,"
"perhaps Allah has looked upon those who witnessed Badr"
"and said,"
"'Do what you wish,'"
"'for I have forgiven you.'"
And Allah revealed verses regarding my situation in Surah al-Mumtahanah.
So, who am I?
