The Forty Hadiths of al-Nawawi
On the authority of Abu Sa'id Sa'd ibn Malik ibn Sinan al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him
That the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said
There shall be no causing harm, nor reciprocating harm
A hasan (good) hadith
Narrated by Ibn Majah, al-Daraqutni, and others
This hadith elucidates a magnificent principle among the principles of Islam
Which is the prohibition of everything that causes harm to oneself or to others
Whether that harm is initiated or done in retaliation
For Islam is a religion of justice and mercy that does not condone injury or injustice in any form
Thus, the hadith establishes the principle of protecting rights and preventing aggression
And it builds relationships founded upon justice and benevolence
Which preserves the stability and well-being of society
