A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the female Companions,
an Ansari woman from the Banu al-Najjar,
and one of the early converts to Islam.
My paternal grandmother
was the mother of seven sons,
all of whom witnessed Badr alongside the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Among them was my father,
who slew Abu Jahl
and fell as a martyr in that battle.
My supplications were answered by Allah.
I embraced Islam in Medina before the Prophet's emigration to it,
while I was still a young girl.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) arrived in Medina
and stayed at the house of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him),
I went out with the young maidens of Banu al-Najjar,
rejoicing at his arrival (peace be upon him).
We were chanting:
"We are maidens of Banu al-Najjar;
how wonderful a neighbor is Muhammad!"
Thereupon the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Allah knows that I truly love you."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to honor the Ansar and their children,
giving them every care and attention.
I belong to a family renowned for noble deeds from the very first day they embraced Islam.
I accompanied the Muslims in the Battle of Badr,
taking an active part in giving water to the sick and treating the wounded.
Six of my paternal uncles took part in Badr,
where two of them were martyred.
My father was also among those who fought at Badr;
he killed Abu Jahl there
and then fought on until he was slain (may Allah be pleased with him).
On the day of Badr, we left grief and pain in the hearts of the polytheists.
Later, I set out with the Prophet (peace be upon him) for the 'Umrah,
and I gave him the Pledge of Ridwan beneath the tree.
I accompanied him on his military expeditions alongside the women,
giving water to the fighters, serving them, and tending to the wounded,
and transporting the slain and wounded back to Medina.
I enjoyed the care and attention of the Prophet (peace be upon him);
he even visited me on the morning of my wedding to honor me,
and to teach the women that which holds good for them in this life and the Hereafter.
I used to send the Prophet (peace be upon him) gifts of the food he liked,
and he would eat at my home, accept my gift, and honor me.
So, who am I?
The best of generations in character and example,
following the Messenger whenever he strove or spoke.
They were here, quenching our spiritual thirst...
The answer: Al-Rabi' bint Mu'awwidh ibn 'Afra' (may Allah be pleased with her).
They departed, leaving a lingering question in the conscience:

A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions, from the Azd and Ghamid tribes.
I migrated to Medina, met the Prophet (peace be upon him),
and attained the honor of his companionship and fighting alongside him.
I became known as "the Slayer of the Sorcerer."
That was because an emir in Iraq had a sorcerer who deceived the people's minds:
the sorcerer would strike off a man's head,
then shout at him, and the man would stand up,
with his head restored to him.
Then he would make them believe he was striking his own head,
tossing it away, then running to fetch it,
and returning it to its place.
The people would exclaim: "Glory be to Allah!
He brings the dead to life!"
The sorcerer would also enter through a she-camel's mouth
and exit from her rear,
and enter through a donkey's rear
and exit from its mouth.
When I witnessed those antics of the sorcerer
and how the people were being led astray by him,
I rose, drew my sword,
walked up to the sorcerer,
sought refuge in Allah from Satan,
and struck him down, killing him.
I said: "If he is truthful,
let him bring himself back to life!"
And I recited: ﴾Will you then succumb to sorcery while you can see?﴿
The emir grew furious with me
and ordered the guards to imprison me.
While I was in confinement,
the prison warden came to me;
he was pleased with what I had done,
so he set me free and said:
"Go, and may Allah never question me about you!"
So, who am I?
The best of examples,
following the Messenger whenever he strove or spoke,
watering the souls with life...
The answer: Jundab ibn Ka'b al-Azdi (may Allah be pleased with him).

A new challenge:
Who am I?
I am one of the female Companions,
and I was the foster mother of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
I arrived in Mecca among women from the Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr,
seeking suckling infants in a year of severe drought.
I had come riding a female donkey of mine,
which had lagged behind the caravan due to weakness,
accompanied by my husband, our infant boy, and an old she-camel.
By Allah, we could not sleep at night
because of the crying of our infant boy,
for he found nothing in my breasts to satisfy him,
nor did our she-camel yield anything to nourish him.
When we reached Mecca,
by Allah, there was not a single woman among us
to whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was not offered;
but whenever we were told that he was an orphan,
we refused him, saying:
"What can his mother possibly do for us?"
So my companions returned with suckling infants,
while I alone failed to secure a baby.
I said to my husband:
"Perhaps I should go back to that orphan and take him,
for I hate to return without a suckling infant."
He replied: "There is no harm in doing so, if you wish."
So I went back to him and took him.
By Allah, no sooner had I taken him
and brought him back to my mount,
placing him in my lap,
than my breasts overflowed with as much milk as he desired.
He drank, and his foster brother drank, until both were completely satisfied.
Then my husband went to that old she-camel of ours,
and behold, her udder was full of milk!
He milked her,
and he drank, and I drank, until we were fully satisfied,
and we spent the most blessed of nights.
In the morning, my husband said to me:
"By Allah, I truly believe you have taken a blessed soul!"
We then set out on our return journey to our desert dwelling,
and by Allah, my donkey outpaced the rest of the caravan,
so much so that my female companions would say:
"Woe to you, O daughter of Abu Dhu'ayb!
Is this the very same donkey you rode when you set out with us?"
I would reply: "Yes, by Allah, it is the very same one!"
We finally arrived at the land of Banu Sa'd,
and I knew of no land on Allah's earth more barren than it.
Yet my sheep would go out to graze in the morning
and return in the evening full and brimming with milk,
so we would milk whatever we wished,
while the people's flocks did not yield a single drop.
All of that was through the blessing of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Years later, after the campaigns of Hunayn and al-Ta'if,
the Prophet (peace be upon him) stayed
at al-Ji'ranah, distributing the spoils of war.
I came to him, and when I drew near him,
he welcomed me and spread out his cloak for me,
and I sat upon it. The people asked:
"Who is this woman whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) honors so?"
Some of them answered, saying:
"This is his mother who nursed him."
So, who am I?
The answer: Halimah al-Sa'diyyah (may Allah be pleased with her).

and by them the world of Allah was made radiant.

the finest of generations in stances and exemplary conduct.
A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the senior Companions,
renowned for courage and cunning strategy.
I embraced Islam after the campaigns of Hunayn and al-Ta'if,
witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan,
and served as the personal bodyguard of the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the day of al-Hudaybiyyah.
The reason for my conversion was that a group from Banu Malik
resolved to go as a delegation to al-Muqawqis, the ruler of Egypt,
bearing gifts for him so as to obtain some wealth from him.
I resolved to go with them,
hoping that I might receive something from him as well.
I traveled with them until we were admitted into his presence.
He looked at the leader of the party from Banu Malik,
brought him near, and seated him beside him.
He then asked him: "Are all of you from Banu Malik?"
He replied: "Yes, except for one man," pointing to me.
Thus, I was the least esteemed of the group;
indeed, I was the most insignificant of the group to him.
The ruler was pleased with their gifts and granted them handsome rewards,
whereas he gave me a trivial thing scarcely worth mentioning.
We then departed from his court,
and my companions headed to the market
to buy gifts for their families,
yet none of them offered to share anything with me.
They set out on the return journey carrying wine,
and they began drinking.
I resolved to kill them;
so I feigned illness, wrapped my head, and said:
"I have no desire to drink,
"Rather, I will serve you drinks."
So they did not suspect anything.
I began pouring drinks for them,
filling their cups one after another,
while they drank without realizing,
until they fell asleep completely drunk.
Then I leaped upon them
and killed them all—
they were thirteen men in total—
and I took everything they had with them.
But I could not return to my people
after what I had done.
So I arrived before the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
in Medina,
and found him sitting in the mosque
with his Companions.
I greeted him with peace
and informed him of what I had done.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
"As for your Islam, we accept it;
but we will not take anything from their wealth,
for this was treachery,
and there is no good in treachery."
I was filled with regret and bewilderment,
and I said,
"I only killed them while I was still upon the religion of my people,
and now I have embraced Islam just this moment."
He, peace be upon him, replied,
"Indeed, Islam wipes away whatever came before it."
And my uncle, 'Urwah Ibn Mas'ud, paid
blood money on behalf of those people.
I was one of the shrewdest minds among the Arabs,
and I never fell into a difficult predicament
without finding a way out of it.
Among such instances was
that 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him,
appointed me governor over Bahrain,
but the local people disliked me,
so 'Umar dismissed me.
Yet they feared he might reinstate me over them,
so their chief among the local non-Arabs said,
"If you do as I command you,
he will not send him back to us."
They said, "We will do it;
what do you command us?"
He said,
"Collect one hundred thousand dirhams,
so that I may take them to 'Umar
and say to him:
'The governor whom
you appointed over us
breached his trust
and handed this sum over to me
from the public treasury.'"
So they gathered one hundred thousand for him,
and he came to 'Umar.
'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, summoned me
and questioned me,
so I said,
"By Allah, he has lied, O Commander of the Believers!
It was actually two hundred thousand."
He asked,
"What drove you to do this?"
I said,
"My large family and dire need;
and now,
let them return it to the public treasury!"
'Umar said to the non-Arab man,
"What do you say?"
He said,
"No, by Allah!
I will certainly tell you the truth:
by Allah, he never gave me anything,
neither little nor much!
It was merely a trick
so that he would not be returned to govern us."
'Umar looked at me
and asked,
"What did you intend by this doing of yours?"
I said,
"The vile man lied against me,
so I wished to humiliate him."
So, who am I?
They followed the best generations as a guiding model
and an exemplar;
they followed the Messenger
whenever he strove or spoke.
They were here,
showering the clouds of grace upon
our lives.
Al-Mughirah
Ibn Shu'bah, may Allah be pleased with him.
They departed,
casting into our conscience
a question:
Has there ever been
a star that ascended and shone like them?
They filled life
with glorious deeds
through their actions,
and through them,
the world of mankind flourished.
Splendidly.
Pause,
and learn about the Companions,
the scholars, and the foremost figures—
the best of generations
in their stances
and exemplary character.
A new challenge:
Who am I?
Among the Companions,
from the nobles of Mecca,
I was the leader of the Quraysh caravan
that escaped on the day of Badr;
I was the head of Quraysh
and their commander on the day of Uhud
and on the day of the Trench.
I had my lapses
and grave errors,
but Allah rescued me
through His mercy and bounty.
So I embraced Islam on the Day of Conquest,
semi-reluctantly,
fearful,
yet I attested to my Islam.
I was among the shrewdest of the Arabs,
and among their foremost men of counsel
and honor.
I witnessed the Battle of Hunayn,
and the Messenger of Allah,
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gave me
from the spoils
one hundred camels
and forty ounces of gold,
reconciling my heart thereby.
And after embracing Islam,
I participated alongside the Messenger of Allah,
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
at Ta'if,
where my eye was put out that day;
then my other eye was put out
on the day of Yarmuk.
Yet I did not abandon jihad;
I used to go out with the armies
even though I was blind,
inciting the squadrons
and crying out:
"Allah, Allah!
You are the defenders of Islam
and the stronghold of the Arabs,
while they are the defenders of polytheism
and the stronghold of the Byzantines!
O Lord, this is one of Your decisive days!
O Allah,
send down Your victory!
O victory of Allah,
draw near!"
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, married
my daughter, Umm Habibah,
and thereby I became
his father-in-law, upon him be blessings
and peace.
So, who am I?
In upright guidance and example,
following the Messenger
whenever he strove or spoke.
He spoke:
They were here, watering
the sorrow of life.
Abu Sufyan,
Sakhr Ibn Harb,
may Allah be pleased with him.
They departed, casting
into the conscience a question:
Has there ever been
a star that ascended
and shone like them?
They filled life
with glorious deeds through their action,
and it flourished.
Pause!
Pause,
and learn about the Companions,
the scholars,
and the distinguished luminaries.
A new challenge:
Who am I?
I am a Companion
from among the Emigrants (Muhajirun).
I embraced Islam among the very first to accept it
from the people of Mecca.
I migrated to Abyssinia,
then returned,
then migrated again,
enduring exile after exile,
and then I migrated to Medina.
I had forbidden wine
upon myself even before Islam,
and I said:
"I shall never drink an intoxicating beverage
that steals my senses,
makes me a laughingstock to those who are lower
than me,
and drives me to marry
my own close female kin."
And while in Medina,
I asked permission from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
to practice celibacy and ascetic withdrawal.
And he said:
"Are you not called to balanced worship?"
And he did not grant me permission,
but said:
"Do you not have in me
an excellent example?"
I replied, "Yes, indeed."
He said:
"For I approach women,
I eat meat,
and I fast and break my fast."
I fought in the Battle of Badr
alongside the Prophet, peace be upon him,
and after I returned to Medina,
I remained there
until my appointed time came,
and my soul departed.
Thereupon wept
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
over me,
until his tears flowed down
upon his cheek.
And he said:
"Depart, O Abu al-Sa'ib!
For you have left this world
without having become entangled with any of it,
in the least."
I was buried in al-Baqi',
being the very first of the Emigrants to die
in Medina,
and the first of them to be buried in al-Baqi'.
And he placed—
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him—
a stone upon my grave
so that he might recognize it.
Umm al-'Ala' saw me
in a dream,
seeing a flowing river beneath me.
So she mentioned that
to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
and he said:
"That is his righteous deed,
continuously flowing for him after his death."
So, who am I?
The answer:
'Uthman ibn Maz'un, may Allah be pleased with him.
Exemplars,
like a star that ascended
and glistened!
They filled life
with glories
through their deeds,
and through them, the world of mankind
shone brightly in pride!
Pause,
and learn about the Companions, the scholars,
and the noble predecessors,
the best of generations,
in their heroic stances
and exemplary character!
A new "Who am I?":
I am one of the Companions,
from among the Emigrants.
I was taken captive in the Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance,
and then they sold me
in Mecca,
where Umm Anmar
al-Khuza'iyyah bought me.
She apprenticed me to a blacksmith
in Mecca to teach me
the craft of sword-making,
and how quickly I mastered it!
And when I heard
about the call of Islam,
I went straight to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
and listened to him.
Then I stretched out my hand
to him,
and bore witness that there is no god but Allah,
and that Muhammad
is the Messenger of Allah.
So when Umm Anmar learned
of my accepting Islam,
she flew into a rage and was consumed
with fury.
She brought her brother, Siba' ibn 'Abd al-'Uzza,
and came to me.
He said:
"A report has reached us about you
that we could hardly believe."
I asked, "And what is it?"
Siba' said:
"It is rumored that you have apostatized
and followed the youth of the Banu Hashim."
I said calmly:
"I have not apostatized;
rather, I have believed in Allah
alone, without any partner,
and I have cast off your idols."
No sooner had
my words touched their ears
than they pounced upon me.
They began beating me
with their hands and kicking me
with their feet,
and striking me with whatever hammers and pieces of iron
they could lay their hands
upon,
until I fell to the ground unconscious,
bleeding profusely,
with blood pouring from me.
One day, I forged
for al-'As ibn Wa'il al-Sahmi
a sword,
and then I came to demand my payment from him.
He said: "I will not pay you
until you renounce Muhammad!"
I said:
"I will never renounce Muhammad,
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
even until Allah causes you to die
and then brings you back to life!"
He said:
"When Allah causes me to die and then
resurrects me, come
to me, and I shall settle your debt."
So Allah,
the Exalted, revealed:
"Have you seen the one who disbelieved
in Our verses and said,
'I will surely be given wealth and children'?"
“Hath he perused the Unseen, or hath he made a pact with the Beneficent?” (19:78)
"from the Most Merciful
a covenant?"
"No! We will record
what he says and extend
“Nay, but We shall record that which he saith and prolong for him a span of torment.” (19:79)
"And We will inherit from him what
he mentions, and he will come to Us
all alone."
And when the persecution by the polytheists intensified
against us,
I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
while he was reclining on a cloak of his
in the shade of the Ka'bah.
I said: "O Messenger of Allah,
will you not pray to Allah for our relief?
Will you not seek victory
for us?"
Thereupon he, peace be upon him, sat upright,
his face flushed red,
and said:
"Among those who came before you,
a person would be combed with iron combs,
tearing away down to his bones
the flesh or sinew,
yet that would not turn him away
from his religion!
And a saw would be placed upon the parting of his head,
sawing him into two halves,
yet that would not turn him away
from his religion!
By Allah, Allah will surely bring this matter to full fruition,
until
a rider will travel from Sanaa
to Hadramawt,
fearing none but Allah
and the wolf for his sheep."
One day, I entered
upon 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him,
and he asked me
about the harshest treatment I had endured at the hands of the polytheists.
So I uncovered my back
and said:
"Look, O Commander
of the Faithful!"
'Umar said:
"I have never seen anything like what I see today!"
I said: "They kindled for me
a fire, and nothing extinguished it
except the fat melting from my back."
Later in life, I became wealthy
after enduring poverty,
and I came to possess of gold
and silver what I had never
dreamed of possessing.
So I placed my wealth
in an open spot in the house,
known to all those in need
from among the poor and the needy,
nor was I harsh with him.
as a bond, and I did not waste
placed a lock upon it.
and you permitted them to do so.
and they would come to my house,
and taking from it whatever they wish.
without even being asked.
or seeking permission,
"Then who am I?"
The best of generations
both in pausing and continuing.
followed the Messenger, peace be upon him.
"When he hastens," or he said,
They used to be
they are given rain from the clouds.
our lives.
Khabbab
may Allah be pleased with him.
They departed.
and instilled it deep within their conscience,
a question.
Are they comparable to them?
A star that rose high and shone brightly,
They filled life
Boastfully,
through their actions,
and flourished because of them,
the worldly life of mankind
and guided them,
He paused.
and came to know the Companions,
as well as the scholars and those of the highest standing.
"Revive the centuries,"
noble stances.
And for instance...
A new challenge
"Who am I?"
and the Companions
from among the earliest Emigrants (Muhajirun),
I embraced Islam along with my father,
and we emigrated to Medina.
were known for their strength
as well as strength and valor.
as well as physical strength, alongside
agility and swift movement
That is why I used to carry out the task
a passing thought, which is the movement
the captives and the oppressed
of the Muslims from Mecca
secretly to Medina.
On one occasion,
and I promised a man from among the Muslim captives,
in Mecca, so that I might carry it.
to Madinah.
So I came until I reached it,
to the shade of a wall in Mecca.
And it was a night
It was a moonlit night, and she saw
A prostitute from Mecca.
known as
'Inaq, and 'Inaq was...
This is a friend of mine.
in the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah),
She recognized me and called out to me.
until I spend the night
But I refused and said to her,
"O 'Anaq!"
Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic,
has indeed forbidden fornication and adultery.
Thereupon, 'Inaq grew furious with me.
and cried out at the top of her voice,
and to lower her voice,
at that place and said:
"O people of Mecca!
This is the man who
he ransoms your captives,
So the people took heed.
and eight of them followed me.
so I fled until
I entered a cave in a mountain.
And men arrived,
They were looking for me.
until they stood right over my head.
at the entrance of the cave.
so Allah blinded their sight.
from seeing me, so they returned.
And two nights later,
I returned to my companion.
So she carried him.
He was a heavy-set man.
so I undid his shackles.
and we traveled until
We arrived in Medina,
So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
and told him what had happened.
with me, and then I said,
"O Messenger of Allah,"
"May I marry ‘Anaq?"
So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) held back
Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
and he did not reply to me.
anything until
this verse was revealed.
The fornicator does not
...marries none except an adulteress,
or an idolatress.
So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recited it to me.
Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
And he said,
"Do not marry her."
So I turned away from her.
And in the third year,
after the Hijrah.
I went out with a detachment on a reconnaissance mission to scout.
news of the polytheists,
So we mentioned this to a clan from Hudhayl.
it will be said to them,
Banu Lihyan
So they followed us shortly thereafter.
consisting of one hundred archers and one hundred foot soldiers.
until they caught up with us.
and they surrounded us.
And they said to you,
the covenant and the pledge, for
You have come down to us.
"Shall we not kill a man among you?"
So three of them surrendered and were taken captive,
from among us, whereas
I and the rest [of us], and so we said,
As for us, however, we do not.
that we submit to the protection of a disbeliever.
so we fought them.
until we were killed.
in an event known as
with animal dung.
So who am I?
The best reward and example...
He followed the Messenger, peace be upon him.
when he strives.
or he said,
They were here.
They bring rain to the clouds of our lives.
The answer is:
Marthad ibn Abi Marthad
May Allah be pleased with him.
They departed.
and instill it deep within the conscience.
a question.
Like a star that ascended high and shone brilliantly,
They filled this life.
boastfully.
through their actual deeds.
and the world flourished through them,
among all creation in grace.
Stop.
Paused.
and come to know the Companions, the scholars, and prominent figures.
The best of generations
in its stances and as an exemplar.
It presents a serious challenge
"Who am I?"
I am a young boy.
to Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah.
my family is from the land of
Nineveh in Iraq.
a tribe raided us.
from the Arab tribes.
and they took me as a captive.
And they sold me in the Hijaz.
"I was a Christian woman."
I work in an orchard
to my masters wherever they may be.
It is called Qarn al-Tha'alib.
near Ta'if
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out
from al-Ta'if.
anxious and sorrowful
After their nobles drove him away
And they incited [the fools] against him.
their foolish ones and their slaves
Thus, they used to revile him.
And they were shouting at him.
And they pelted him with stones.
So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out.
wandering aimlessly, lost in thought
And he did not regain consciousness.
except when I reached Qarn al-Tha'alib.
So he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sought refuge.
...to a vineyard.
To my masters
A degree of emotion was stirred.
concerning the two sons of Rabi'ah
When they saw the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
So leave me be.
And they both said to me,
Take a cluster of grapes.
And take him to that one.
A man
So I did it, without even realizing.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
And when she gave birth to her,
So I placed it before him.
He extended his hand to him and said,
In the name of Allah
Then he ate.
So I said, "If..."
No one would say such a thing.
The people of this town
So he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me:
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who
"Which land are you from?"
I said, "I am a Christian."
From Nineveh.
He said, "Did you believe?"
The village of the righteous man
Yunus ibn Matta
I said to him,
And what could make you realize who Jonah was?
Whereupon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"That is my brother."
He was a prophet
"And I am a Prophet."
So I bent over his hands, kissing them.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
And his feet.
I would kiss them both and weep for joy.
Ibn Rabi'ah said,

As for your young slave boy,
He has ruined it for you.
