00:07:19.970 --> 00:07:25.980 I am one of the female Companions, 00:07:25.980 --> 00:07:29.980 and I was the foster mother of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). 00:07:29.980 --> 00:07:35.170 I arrived in Mecca among women from the Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr, 00:07:35.170 --> 00:07:39.170 seeking suckling infants in a year of severe drought. 00:07:39.170 --> 00:07:41.259 I had come riding a female donkey of mine, 00:07:41.259 --> 00:07:44.259 which had lagged behind the caravan due to weakness, 00:07:44.259 --> 00:07:48.259 accompanied by my husband, our infant boy, and an old she-camel. 00:07:48.259 --> 00:07:50.259 By Allah, we could not sleep at night 00:07:50.259 --> 00:07:53.259 because of the crying of our infant boy, 00:07:53.259 --> 00:07:56.259 for he found nothing in my breasts to satisfy him, 00:07:56.259 --> 00:07:59.259 nor did our she-camel yield anything to nourish him. 00:07:59.259 --> 00:08:02.000 When we reached Mecca, 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:05.000 by Allah, there was not a single woman among us 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:10.000 to whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was not offered; 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:13.060 but whenever we were told that he was an orphan, 00:08:13.060 --> 00:08:16.060 we refused him, saying: 00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:19.060 "What can his mother possibly do for us?" 00:08:19.060 --> 00:08:22.290 So my companions returned with suckling infants, 00:08:23.290 --> 00:08:26.290 while I alone failed to secure a baby. 00:08:26.290 --> 00:08:28.290 I said to my husband: 00:08:28.290 --> 00:08:32.289 "Perhaps I should go back to that orphan and take him, 00:08:32.289 --> 00:08:36.289 for I hate to return without a suckling infant." 00:08:36.289 --> 00:08:40.289 He replied: "There is no harm in doing so, if you wish." 00:08:40.289 --> 00:08:43.350 So I went back to him and took him. 00:08:43.350 --> 00:08:47.090 By Allah, no sooner had I taken him 00:08:47.090 --> 00:08:49.090 and brought him back to my mount, 00:08:49.090 --> 00:08:51.090 placing him in my lap, 00:08:51.090 --> 00:08:55.090 than my breasts overflowed with as much milk as he desired. 00:08:55.090 --> 00:08:59.090 He drank, and his foster brother drank, until both were completely satisfied. 00:08:59.090 --> 00:09:02.120 Then my husband went to that old she-camel of ours, 00:09:02.120 --> 00:09:04.120 and behold, her udder was full of milk! 00:09:04.120 --> 00:09:06.120 He milked her, 00:09:06.120 --> 00:09:09.120 and he drank, and I drank, until we were fully satisfied, 00:09:09.120 --> 00:09:12.120 and we spent the most blessed of nights. 00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:15.120 In the morning, my husband said to me: 00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:20.120 "By Allah, I truly believe you have taken a blessed soul!" 00:09:20.120 --> 00:09:24.409 We then set out on our return journey to our desert dwelling, 00:09:24.409 --> 00:09:28.409 and by Allah, my donkey outpaced the rest of the caravan, 00:09:28.409 --> 00:09:31.409 so much so that my female companions would say: 00:09:31.409 --> 00:09:34.409 "Woe to you, O daughter of Abu Dhu'ayb! 00:09:34.409 --> 00:09:38.409 Is this the very same donkey you rode when you set out with us?" 00:09:38.409 --> 00:09:42.409 I would reply: "Yes, by Allah, it is the very same one!" 00:09:42.409 --> 00:09:45.570 We finally arrived at the land of Banu Sa'd, 00:09:45.570 --> 00:09:49.570 and I knew of no land on Allah's earth more barren than it. 00:09:50.570 --> 00:09:53.570 Yet my sheep would go out to graze in the morning 00:09:53.570 --> 00:09:56.570 and return in the evening full and brimming with milk, 00:09:56.570 --> 00:09:59.570 so we would milk whatever we wished, 00:09:59.570 --> 00:10:02.570 while the people's flocks did not yield a single drop. 00:10:02.570 --> 00:10:07.570 All of that was through the blessing of the Prophet (peace be upon him). 00:10:07.570 --> 00:10:11.500 Years later, after the campaigns of Hunayn and al-Ta'if, 00:10:11.500 --> 00:10:14.500 the Prophet (peace be upon him) stayed 00:10:14.500 --> 00:10:17.500 at al-Ji'ranah, distributing the spoils of war. 00:10:17.500 --> 00:10:21.500 I came to him, and when I drew near him, 00:10:21.500 --> 00:10:24.500 he welcomed me and spread out his cloak for me, 00:10:24.500 --> 00:10:28.529 and I sat upon it. al-Hudaybiyyah. 00:12:02.220 --> 00:12:06.220 The reason for my conversion was that a group from Banu Malik 00:12:06.220 --> 00:12:11.059 resolved to go as a delegation to al-Muqawqis, the ruler of Egypt, 00:12:11.059 --> 00:12:16.059 bearing gifts for him so as to obtain some wealth from him. 00:12:16.059 --> 00:12:19.059 I resolved to go with them, 00:12:20.059 --> 00:12:24.059 hoping that I might receive something from him as well. 00:12:24.059 --> 00:12:28.059 I traveled with them until we were admitted into his presence. 00:12:28.059 --> 00:12:32.059 He looked at the leader of the party from Banu Malik, 00:12:32.059 --> 00:12:35.059 brought him near, and seated him beside him. 00:12:35.059 --> 00:12:39.059 He then asked him: "Are all of you from Banu Malik?" 00:12:39.059 --> 00:12:44.059 He replied: "Yes, except for one man," pointing to me. 00:12:44.059 --> 00:12:47.059 Thus, I was the least esteemed of the group; 00:12:47.059 --> 00:12:50.149 indeed, I was the most insignificant of the group to him. 00:12:50.149 --> 00:12:54.149 The ruler was pleased with their gifts and granted them handsome rewards, 00:12:54.149 --> 00:12:58.149 whereas he gave me a trivial thing scarcely worth mentioning. 00:12:58.149 --> 00:13:00.149 We then departed from his court, 00:13:00.149 --> 00:13:03.409 and my companions headed to the market 00:13:03.409 --> 00:13:06.409 to buy gifts for their families, 00:13:06.409 --> 00:13:10.409 yet none of them offered to share anything with me. 00:13:10.409 --> 00:13:13.759 They set out on the return journey carrying wine, 00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:15.759 and they began drinking. 00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:17.759 I resolved to kill them; 00:13:17.759 --> 00:13:21.759 so I feigned illness, wrapped my head, and said: 00:13:21.759 --> 00:13:24.759 "I have no desire to drink, 00:13:24.759 --> 00:13:26.759 "Rather, I will serve you drinks." 00:13:26.759 --> 00:13:28.759 So they did not suspect anything. 00:13:28.759 --> 00:13:30.759 I began pouring drinks for them, 00:13:30.759 --> 00:13:33.759 filling their cups one after another, 00:13:33.759 --> 00:13:36.759 while they drank without realizing, 00:13:36.759 --> 00:13:38.759 until they fell asleep completely drunk. 00:13:38.759 --> 00:13:40.759 Then I leaped upon them 00:13:40.759 --> 00:13:42.759 and killed them all— 00:13:42.759 --> 00:13:45.759 they were thirteen men in total— 00:13:45.759 --> 00:13:47.759 and I took everything they had with them. 00:13:47.759 --> 00:13:50.950 But I could not return to my people 00:13:50.950 --> 00:13:53.080 after done. 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:10.080 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 00:14:10.080 --> 00:14:12.080 "As for your Islam, we accept it; 00:14:12.080 --> 00:14:16.080 but we will not take anything from their wealth, 00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:18.080 for this was treachery, 00:14:18.080 --> 00:14:20.080 and there is no good in treachery." 00:14:20.080 --> 00:14:22.179 I was filled with regret and bewilderment, 00:14:22.179 --> 00:14:24.179 and I said, 00:14:24.179 --> 00:14:28.179 "I only killed them while I was still upon the religion of my people, 00:14:28.179 --> 00:14:30.179 and now I have embraced Islam just this moment." 00:14:30.179 --> 00:14:34.179 He, peace be upon him, replied, 00:14:34.179 --> 00:14:38.179 "Indeed, Islam wipes away whatever came before it." 00:14:38.179 --> 00:14:41.559 And my uncle, 'Urwah Ibn Mas'ud, paid 00:14:41.559 --> 00:14:43.559 blood money on behalf of those people. 00:14:43.559 --> 00:14:47.740 I was one of the shrewdest minds among the Arabs, me, 00:15:00.779 --> 00:15:02.779 so 'Umar dismissed me. 00:15:02.779 --> 00:15:04.779 Yet they feared he might reinstate me over them, 00:15:04.779 --> 00:15:07.779 so their chief among the local non-Arabs said, 00:15:07.779 --> 00:15:10.779 "If you do as I command you, 00:15:10.779 --> 00:15:12.779 he will not send him back to us." 00:15:12.779 --> 00:15:14.779 They said, "We will do it; 00:15:14.779 --> 00:15:16.779 what do you command us?" 00:15:16.779 --> 00:15:18.779 He said, 00:15:18.779 --> 00:15:20.779 "Collect one hundred thousand dirhams, 00:15:20.779 --> 00:15:22.779 so that I may take them to 'Umar 00:15:22.779 --> 00:15:24.779 and say to him: 00:15:24.779 --> 00:15:26.779 'The governor whom 00:15:26.779 --> 00:15:28.779 you appointed over us 00:15:28.779 --> 00:15:30.779 breached his trust 00:15:30.779 --> 00:15:32.779 and handed this sum over to me 00:15:32.779 --> 00:15:34.840 from the public treasury.'" 00:15:34.840 --> 00:15:36.840 So they gathered questioned me, 00:15:44.870 --> 00:15:46.870 so I said, 00:15:46.870 --> 00:15:48.870 "By Allah, he has lied, O Commander of the Believers! 00:15:48.870 --> 00:15:50.870 It was actually two hundred thousand." 00:15:50.870 --> 00:15:52.870 He asked, 00:15:52.870 --> 00:15:54.870 "What drove you to do this?" 00:15:54.870 --> 00:15:56.870 I said, 00:15:56.870 --> 00:15:58.870 "My large family and dire need; 00:15:58.870 --> 00:16:00.870 and now, 00:16:00.870 --> 00:16:02.870 let them return it to the public treasury!" 00:16:02.870 --> 00:16:04.970 'Umar said to the non-Arab man, 00:16:04.970
