In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
A Summary of the Prophetic biography (Seerah).
The negotiations of Quraysh with Abu Talib regarding the Prophet, peace be upon him.
When Quraysh realized that their oppression of the vulnerable among the Muslims,
and their hostility toward others,
did not turn the people away from responding to the call of Allah,
they resorted to the method of negotiation once again.
They went to Abu Talib again and said to him:
"O Abu Talib,
you possess age, honor, and status among us.
We have asked you to restrain your nephew, yet you have not restrained him from us.
By Allah, we can no longer endure this insulting of our forefathers,
this mockery of our intelligence, and this disparagement of our gods,
unless you restrain him from us,
or we shall fight both him and you regarding this matter,
until one of the two parties is destroyed."
It weighed heavily upon Abu Talib to be estranged from his people and to face their enmity,
yet he could not bring himself to hand over the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, nor to abandon him.
He sent for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and said to him:
"O my nephew, your people have come to me,
and they have said such-and-such,"
referring to what they had told him.
"So, have mercy upon me and upon yourself,
and do not burden me with a matter I cannot bear."
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, thought
that his uncle had reached his limit regarding him,
and that he was going to abandon him and hand him over,
and that he had become too weak to support him or stand by his side.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
"O my uncle,
by Allah, if they were to place the sun in my right hand,
and the moon in my left,
on the condition that I abandon this matter,
until Allah makes it manifest or I perish in the process,
I would not abandon it."
Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was overcome with emotion and wept.
Then he stood up.
As he turned to leave,
Abu Talib called out to him and said:
"Come back, O my nephew."
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, turned back to him,
and he said:
"Go, O my nephew, and say whatever you wish.
For by Allah, I will never hand you over to anyone, ever."
Then he said:
"By Allah, they shall never reach you with their collective might,
until I am laid in the earth, buried."
"So proclaim your command; you have nothing to fear.
Rejoice, and let that bring coolness to your eyes."
In a narration by al-Hakim in his Mustadrak with a hasan (sound) chain,
on the authority of 'Aqil Ibn Abi Talib, he said:
"Quraysh came to Abu Talib and said:
'Your nephew is harming us in our religion and in our assembly,
so forbid him from harming us.'
He said to me, 'O 'Aqil,
go to Muhammad.'
He said: So I went to him,
and I brought him out from a small room."
Talha said: "A small house."
It was at midday, due to the intense heat,
and he was seeking the shade,
walking in it because of the intense heat of the sun-scorched ground.
So we came to them,
and Abu Talib said:
'Your cousins claim that you are harming them in their club and in their assembly,
so refrain from that.'
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, raised his gaze to the sky and said:
'Do you see this sun?'
They said: 'Yes.'
He said:
'I am no more capable of abandoning this than you are
of lighting a flame from it.'
Abu Talib then said:
'We have never known my nephew to lie.
So go back.'"
