A summary of the concepts held by the Ahl al-Sunnah.
Self-reckoning.
The fundamental basis for self-reckoning is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
“O ye who believe! Observe your duty to Allah. And let every soul look to that which it sendeth on before for the morrow. And observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Informed of what ye do.” (59:18)
If a person perceives a slip,
they must rectify it through cessation and repentance.
Or, if they see a shortcoming,
they must mend it by exerting effort,
and seeking the aid of Allah in completing their work.
This is expressed by the saying:
“O ye who believe! Observe your duty to Allah. And let every soul look to that which it sendeth on before for the morrow. And observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Informed of what ye do.” (59:18)
It carries its own inspiration.
It is as if the person is looking
at what their soul has ventured into
of deeds,
in all their details,
to see if they are of benefit for the morrow,
on the Day of Resurrection,
or if they will be a burden upon them.
Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
"Reckon yourselves before you are reckoned,
and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you,
for it is easier for you in the reckoning tomorrow
that you reckon yourselves today,
and adorn yourselves for the Great Presentation."
“On that day ye will be exposed; not a secret of you will be hidden.” (69:18)
