Stop. Get to know the Companions, the scholars, and the noble figures. A new challenge: Who am I? I am one of the Companions from the Muhajirun. I was taken captive during the Jahiliyyah, and then they sold me in Makkah. Umm Anmar al-Khuza'iyyah bought me. She handed me over to one of the blacksmiths in Makkah. To teach me the craft of sword-making. How quickly I mastered it. When I heard about the call of Islam, I went to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and heard from him. I extended my hand to him, And I testified that there is no god but Allah, And that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. When Umm Anmar learned of my Islam, She was enraged and consumed with fury. She went to her brother, Siba' ibn 'Abd al-'Uzza. He came to me, And said, "News has reached us about you that we do not believe." I said, "And what is that?" Siba' said, "It is rumored that you have apostatized, And followed the boy of Ibn Hashim." I said calmly, "I have not apostatized; Rather, I have believed in Allah alone, with no partner, And I have rejected your idols." No sooner had my words reached their ears Than they fell upon me. They began to strike me with their hands and kick me with their feet. They pelted me with whatever they could reach—hammers and pieces of iron— Until I fell to the ground, unconscious, With blood streaming from me. One day, I made a sword for al-'As ibn Wa'il al-Sahmi, And I came to collect my payment. He said, "I will not give you anything until you disbelieve in Muhammad." I said, "I will not disbelieve in Muhammad, peace be upon him, Until Allah causes you to die and then resurrects you." He said, "If Allah causes me to die and then resurrects me, Come to me then, and I will pay you your due." Then Allah the Almighty revealed: “Hast thou seen him who disbelieveth in Our revelations and saith: Assuredly I shall be given wealth and children?” (19:77) "And he said, 'I will surely be given wealth and children.'" “Hath he perused the Unseen, or hath he made a pact with the Beneficent?” (19:78) "No! We shall record what he says." “Nay, but We shall record that which he saith and prolong for him a span of torment.” (19:79) “And We shall inherit from him that whereof he spake, and he will come unto Us, alone (without his wealth and children).” (19:80) When the persecution of the polytheists against us intensified, I came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, While he was reclining on his cloak in the shade of the Ka'bah. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Will you not pray to Allah for us? Will you not seek victory for us?" He sat up, peace be upon him, His face flushed, and he said, "Those who came before you— A man would be combed with iron combs, Stripping the flesh or nerves from his bones, Yet that would not turn him away from his religion. A saw would be placed on the parting of his head, And he would be split in two, Yet that would not turn him away from his religion. Allah will surely complete this matter, Until a traveler can ride from San'a to Hadramawt, Fearing nothing but Allah and the wolf for his sheep." One day, I entered upon 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, And he asked me about the severest suffering I had endured from the polytheists. I uncovered my back and said, "Look, O Commander of the Faithful." 'Umar said, "I have never seen anything like it." I said, "They lit a fire for me, And nothing extinguished it but the fat of my back." In the latter part of my life, I became wealthy after having been poor, And I possessed gold and silver Such as I had never dreamed of. I placed my wealth in a spot in my house Known to those in need among the poor and the destitute. I did not tie it shut, Nor did I put a lock upon it. I gave them permission to access it, So they would come to my house And take from it whatever they wished, Without asking or seeking permission. So, who am I? They departed, leaving a question in the conscience: Is there any star like them that has risen and shone? They filled life with pride through their deeds, And the world of humanity flourished because of them.
