Quraysh as they celebrated one of their festivals. 00:00:55.539 --> 00:00:59.539 He saw men wearing expensive silk turbans, 00:00:59.539 --> 00:01:02.539 and strutting in precious Yemeni cloaks. 00:01:02.539 --> 00:01:05.540 He watched the women and children, 00:01:05.540 --> 00:01:09.540 dressed in vibrant garments and exquisite finery. 00:01:09.540 --> 00:01:12.540 He looked at the livestock being led by the wealthy, 00:01:12.540 --> 00:01:15.540 after they had adorned them with various decorations, 00:01:15.540 --> 00:01:18.540 to slaughter them before their idols. 00:01:18.540 --> 00:01:21.540 He stood, leaning his back against the wall of the Ka'bah, 00:01:21.540 --> 00:01:24.540 and said, "O people of Quraysh! 00:01:24.540 --> 00:01:26.540 The sheep was created by Allah; 00:01:26.540 --> 00:01:30.540 He is the One who sent down rain from the sky for it, so it drank; 00:01:30.540 --> 00:01:34.540 and He caused grass to grow for it from the earth, so it was satisfied. 00:01:34.540 --> 00:01:37.540 Yet you slaughter it in the name of other than Him? 00:01:37.540 --> 00:01:40.540 I see you are a people who are ignorant." 00:01:40.540 --> 00:01:43.640 His uncle al-Khattab rose to him— 00:01:43.640 --> 00:01:45.640 the father of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab— 00:01:45.640 --> 00:01:47.640 and slapped him, saying, 00:01:47.640 --> 00:01:49.640 "May you be bereaved of your mother! 00:01:49.640 --> 00:01:52.640 We have continued to hear this insolence from you and have endured it, 00:01:52.640 --> 00:01:54.640 until our patience has run out." 00:01:54.640 --> 00:01:58.640 Then he incited the foolish among his people against him, so they harmed him, 00:01:58.640 --> 00:02:00.640 and persisted in their persecution of him, 00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:02.640 until he was forced to leave Makkah, 00:02:02.640 --> 00:02:04.640 and took refuge in Mount Hira'. 00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:08.639 Al-Khattab then assigned a group of Quraysh youth to watch him, 00:02:08.639 --> 00:02:11.639 to prevent him from entering Makkah. 00:02:11.639 --> 00:02:14.639 Thus, he could only enter it in secret. 00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:17.639 Later, Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl 00:02:17.639 faiths, 00:02:57.699 --> 00:03:01.699 seeking the Hanifiyyah, the religion of Ibrahim. 00:03:01.699 --> 00:03:04.699 As for Waraqah ibn Nawfal, he became a Christian. 00:03:04.699 --> 00:03:06.699 As for 'Abdullah ibn Jahsh, 00:03:06.699 --> 00:03:08.699 and 'Uthman ibn al-Harith, 00:03:08.699 --> 00:03:10.699 they did not arrive at anything. 00:03:10.699 --> 00:03:13.699 As for Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn 00:03:39.699 A monk who possessed knowledge of the Scripture was mentioned to me, 00:03:39.699 --> 00:03:42.699 so I went to him and told him my story. 00:03:42.699 --> 00:03:43.699 He said, 00:03:43.699 --> 00:03:47.699 'I see you seek the religion of Ibrahim, O brother of Makkah.' 00:03:47.699 --> 00:03:50.699 I said, 'Yes, that is what I desire.' 00:03:50.699 --> 00:03:51.699 He said, 00:03:51.699 --> 00:03:55.699 'You are seeking a religion that does not exist today. 00:03:55.699 --> 00:03:56.699 However, 00:03:56.699 --> 00:03:58.699 return to your land, 00:03:58.699 --> 00:04:02.699 for Allah will send from your people one who will revive the religion of Ibrahim. 00:04:02.699 --> 00:04:05.699 So when you meet him, follow him.'" 00:04:05.699 --> 00:04:09.699 Zayd returned to Makkah, quickening his pace, 00:04:09.699 --> 00:04:12.699 in search of the promised Prophet. 00:04:12.699 --> 00:04:14.699 While he was on his way, 00:04:14.699 --> 00:04:18.699 Allah sent His Prophet Muhammad with the religion of guidance and truth. 00:04:18.699 --> 00:04:21.699 But Zayd did not live to see him, 00:04:21.699 --> 00:04:26.699 for a group of Bedouins attacked him and killed him before he reached Makkah, 00:04:26.699 --> 00:04:31.699 and before his eyes could be cooled by the sight of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:04:31.699 --> 00:04:35.699 As Zayd was breathing his last, 00:04:35.699 --> 00:04:38.699 he raised his gaze to the sky and said, 00:04:38.699 --> 00:04:41.699 "O Allah, if You have deprived me of this goodness, 00:04:41.699 --> 00:04:44.699 do not deprive my son Sa'id of it." 00:04:44.699 --> 00:04:48.769 Allah, glory be to Him, willed to answer Zayd's prayer. 00:04:48.769 --> 00:04:53.769 No sooner had the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, begun calling people to Islam, 00:04:53.769 --> 00:05:00.769 than Sa'id ibn Zayd was among the foremost of those who believed in Allah and affirmed the message of His Prophet. 00:05:00.769 --> 00:05:02.769 And it is no wonder, 00:05:02.769 --> 00:05:07.769 for Sa'id grew up in a house that rejected the misguidance of Quraysh, 00:05:07.769 --> 00:05:12.769 and was raised in the lap of a father who spent his life searching for the truth, 00:05:12.769 --> 00:05:16.769 and died while running breathlessly in pursuit of the truth. 00:05:16.769 --> 00:05:18.769 Sa'id did not embrace Islam alone; 00:05:18.769 --> 00:05:25.769 his wife, Fatimah bint al-Khattab, the sister of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, embraced Islam with him. 00:05:25.769 --> 00:05:28.769 The young Qurayshi faced such persecution from his people 00:05:28.769 --> 00:05:32.769 as would have been enough to turn him away from his religion. 00:05:32.769 --> 00:05:36.769 But instead of turning him away from Islam, 00:05:36.769 --> 00:05:42.769 he and his wife were able to win over one of the most influential men of Quraysh, 00:05:42.769 --> 00:05:44.769 and one of the most significant, 00:05:44.769 --> 00:05:48.769 as he was the cause of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab's conversion to Islam. 00:05:48.769 --> 00:05:55.769 Sa'id ibn Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl dedicated all his youthful, vibrant energy to the service of Islam, 00:05:55.769 --> 00:06:00.769 for he embraced Islam when he had not yet reached the age of twenty. 00:06:00.769 --> 00:06:07.769 He witnessed all the battles with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, except for Badr, 00:06:07.769 --> 00:06:09.800 for he was absent on that day 00:06:09.800 --> 00:06:15.800 because he was on a mission assigned to him by the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:06:15.800 --> 00:06:21.800 He contributed with the Muslims to the toppling of the throne of Chosroes and the dismantling of the kingdom of Caesar. 00:06:21.800 --> 00:06:25.800 In every battle he fought, the Muslims witnessed 00:06:25.800 --> 00:06:28.800 his famous, glorious stances, 00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:31.800 and his praiseworthy, noble deeds. 00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:36.800 Perhaps the most magnificent of his heroics were those he recorded on the day of Yarmouk. 00:06:36.800 --> 00:06:41.800 So let us leave the floor to him to tell us a part of the story of that day. 00:06:41.800 --> 00:06:45.800 Sa'id ibn Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl said: 00:06:45.800 --> 00:06:51.800 "On the day of Yarmouk, we were twenty-four thousand or thereabouts. 00:06:51.800 --> 00:06:55.800 The Romans came out against us with one hundred and twenty thousand. 00:06:55.800 --> 00:07:02.800 They advanced toward us with heavy steps, as if they were mountains moved by invisible hands. 00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:07.800 Before them marched the bishops, patriarchs, and priests, 00:07:07.800 --> 00:07:11.800 carrying crosses and chanting prayers aloud. 00:07:11.800 --> 00:07:17.860 The army behind them repeated the chants, and they had a roar like the roar of thunder. 00:07:17.860 --> 00:07:21.930 When the Muslims saw them in this state, 00:07:22.930 --> 00:07:25.930 a measure of fear entered their hearts. 00:07:25.930 --> 00:07:31.930 At that moment, Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah stood up to urge the Muslims to fight. 00:07:31.930 --> 00:07:34.930 He said, 'Servants of Allah! 00:07:34.930 --> 00:07:38.930 Help Allah, and He will help you and make your feet firm. 00:07:38.930 --> 00:07:43.930 Servants of Allah, be patient, for patience is a salvation from disbelief, 00:07:43.930 --> 00:07:47.930 a means of pleasing the Lord, and a way to repel shame. 00:07:47.930 --> 00:07:50.930 Level your spears, shield yourselves with your shields, 00:07:50.930 --> 00:07:55.930 and remain silent, except for the remembrance of Allah, the Almighty, in your hearts, 00:07:55.930 --> 00:07:58.930 until I give you the command, if Allah wills.'" 00:07:58.930 --> 00:08:02.019 Sa'id said, at that moment, 00:08:02.019 --> 00:08:05.019 a man from the ranks of the Muslims stepped forward 00:08:05.019 --> 00:08:07.019 and said to Abu 'Ubaydah, 00:08:07.019 --> 00:08:10.019 "I have resolved to meet my fate this hour. 00:08:10.019 --> 00:08:16.019 Do you have a message you wish to send to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him?" 00:08:16.019 --> 00:08:19.019 Abu 'Ubaydah said, "Yes. 00:08:19.019 --> 00:08:22.019 Convey my greetings and the greetings of the Muslims to him, 00:08:22.019 --> 00:08:25.019 and say to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, 00:08:25.019 --> 00:08:29.019 we have found what our Lord promised us to be true.'" 00:08:29.019 --> 00:08:32.019 Sa'id said, "No sooner had I heard his words, 00:08:32.019 --> 00:08:34.019 and seen him draw his sword, 00:08:34.019 --> 00:08:37.019 and set out to meet the enemies of Allah, 00:08:37.019 --> 00:08:39.019 than I threw myself to the ground, 00:08:39.019 --> 00:08:41.019 knelt on my knees, 00:08:41.019 --> 00:08:43.019 leveled my spear, 00:08:43.019 --> 00:08:46.019 and struck the first horseman who approached us. 00:08:46.019 --> 00:08:48.019 Then I leaped toward the enemy, 00:08:48.019 --> 00:08:52.019 and Allah had removed all the fear from my heart. 00:08:52.019 --> 00:08:54.019 The people surged against the Romans, 00:08:54.019 --> 00:08:57.019 and they continued to fight them 00:08:57.019 --> 00:09:01.019 until Allah decreed victory for the believers." 00:09:01.019 --> 00:09:05.019 Sa'id ibn Zayd witnessed the conquest of Damascus after that. 00:09:05.019 --> 00:09:08.019 When it submitted to the Muslims in obedience, 00:09:08.019 --> 00:09:12.019 Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah appointed him as its governor. 00:09:12.019 --> 00:09:16.019 Thus, he was the first Muslim to govern Damascus. 00:09:16.019 --> 00:09:18.019 During the time of the Umayyads, 00:09:18.019 --> 00:09:21.019 an incident occurred to Sa'id ibn Zayd 00:09:21.019 --> 00:09:25.019 that the people of Yathrib spoke of for a long time. 00:09:25.019 --> 00:09:27.019 It was that Arwa bint Uways 00:09:27.019 --> 00:09:29.019 claimed that Sa'id ibn Zayd 00:09:29.019 --> 00:09:31.019 had usurped a portion of her land 00:09:31.019 --> 00:09:33.019 and added it to his own. 00:09:33.019 --> 00:09:36.019 She began to spread this among the Muslims 00:09:36.019 --> 00:09:38.019 and talk about it. 00:09:38.019 --> 00:09:41.019 Then she took her case to Marwan ibn al-Hakam, 00:09:41.019 --> 00:09:43.019 the governor of Madinah. 00:09:43.019 --> 00:09:47.019 Marwan sent people to him to speak with him about it. 00:09:47.019 --> 00:09:50.019 The matter was difficult for the Companion of the Messenger of Allah, 00:09:50.019 --> 00:09:53.019 and he said, "They claim I oppressed her? 00:09:53.019 --> 00:09:55.019 How could I oppress her, 00:09:55.019 --> 00:09:59.019 when I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 00:09:59.019 --> 00:10:01.019 'Whoever usurps a span of land, 00:10:01.019 --> 00:10:05.019 it will be hung around his neck on the Day of Resurrection from seven earths.' 00:10:05.019 --> 00:10:09.019 O Allah, she has claimed that I oppressed her. 00:10:09.019 --> 00:10:11.019 If she is a liar, 00:10:11.019 --> 00:10:13.019 then take away her sight, 00:10:13.019 --> 00:10:16.019 and cast her into the well over which she disputes with me, 00:10:16.019 --> 00:10:22.019 and reveal a sign of the truth that makes it clear to the Muslims that I did not oppress her." 00:10:22.019 --> 00:10:25.019 Not long after that, 00:10:25.019 --> 00:10:29.019 the 'Aqiq valley flooded with a flow such as had never been seen before, 00:10:29.019 --> 00:10:33.019 which uncovered the boundary over which they had been disputing. 00:10:33.019 --> 00:10:37.019 It became clear to the Muslims that Sa'id was truthful. 00:10:37.019 --> 00:10:42.019 The woman did not live more than a month after that before she went blind. 00:10:42.019 --> 00:10:45.019 And while she was walking on that land of hers, 00:10:45.019 --> 00:10:47.019 she fell into her well. 00:10:47.019 --> 00:10:49.019 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar said, 00:10:49.019 --> 00:10:53.019 "We used to hear people, when we were boys, say to one another, 00:10:53.019 --> 00:10:57.019 'May Allah make you blind, just as He made Arwa blind.'" 00:10:57.019 --> 00:10:59.019 There is no wonder in that, 00:10:59.019 --> 00:11:02.019 for the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, says: 00:11:02.019 --> 00:11:04.019 "Beware of the supplication of the oppressed, 00:11:04.019 --> 00:11:08.019 for there is no veil between it and Allah." 00:11:08.019 --> 00:11:11.019 So how much more so when the oppressed is Sa'id ibn Zayd, 00:11:11.019 --> 00:11:15.019 one of the ten promised Paradise? 00:11:15.019 --> 00:11:20.179 "O Allah,
