In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari.
Abridged by Dr. 'Aqil ibn Salim al-Shammar.
Surah al-Qamar.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The people of Noah denied before them.
They denied Our servant.
And they said, "A madman," and he was repelled.
O Muhammad, the people of Noah denied before these people.
They denied Our servant, Noah, peace be upon him.
When We sent him to them.
And they said, "He is a madman," and he was driven away.
So he called upon his Lord, "I am overcome."
So help me.
Noah called upon his Lord.
"My people have overcome me in their rebellion and insolence."
"So grant me victory over them with a punishment from You."
For their disbelief in You.
So We opened the gates of the heaven.
With water pouring forth.
And We caused the earth to gush with springs.
So the waters met for a matter already ordained.
When Noah called upon Us.
Seeking Our aid against his people, We opened.
The gates of heaven with pouring water.
And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs of water.
The water of the heaven and the water of the earth met.
For a matter that Allah had decreed and ordained.
“And We carried him upon a thing of planks and nails,” (54:13)
Sailing under Our eyes, as a reward.
For him who had been disbelieved.
And We carried Noah when the waters met.
Upon a ship made of planks.
And nails with which the ship was fastened.
Sailing under Our observation and protection.
As a punishment from Allah.
And a recompense for him who denied and disbelieved.
And We left it as a sign.
Is there any who will remember?
How then was My punishment and My warnings?
We left the ship in which.
We carried Noah and those who were with him.
As a lesson and an admonition for those after the people of Noah.
From among the nations, so that they might take heed.
Is there any who will take heed and remember?
What We did to this nation.
That disbelieved in its Lord.
How then was My punishment for those who.
Disbelieved in their Lord, and how was.
My warning, through the punishment I inflicted upon them?
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance.
So is there any who will remember?
We have made the Qur'an easy.
And We have detailed it for remembrance.
“(The tribe of) A'ad rejected warnings. Then how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings.” (54:18)
My punishment and My warnings.
The people of 'Ad also denied their prophet, Hud, peace be upon him.
So observe how My punishment was for them.
And My warning, by what I did to them.
For whoever follows their path.
We sent upon them.
“Lo! We let loose on them a raging wind on a day of constant calamity,” (54:19)
Continuous.
We sent upon 'Ad.
When they persisted in their tyranny.
A wind, fiercely cold and violent.
And its sound had a screeching noise.
On a day of evil and misfortune for them.
The affliction and punishment continued for them therein.
Until it brought them to Hell.
We have made the Qur'an easy for remembrance.
So is there any who will remember?
It would uproot the people and then throw them.
Upon their heads, so their necks would break.
And be severed from their bodies.
Leaving them like trunks of palm trees.
Uprooted, because their heads.
Were severed from their bodies.
Their necks would vanish, and they would remain.
So observe how My punishment was for the people of 'Ad.
When they disbelieved in their Lord.
How was My warning to them, as I warned others?
We have made the Qur'an easy and simplified it.
So is there any who will take heed?
Thamud denied the warnings.
They said, "Is it a human being from among us?"
"A single one, whom we should follow?"
“For they said; Is it a mortal man, alone among us, that we are to follow? Then indeed we should fall into error and madness.” (54:24)
Thamud, the people of Salih, peace be upon him, denied.
The warnings of Allah that came to them from Him.
They said, in denial of Salih.
"Shall we follow a human being from among us?"
"We are a large group, and he is but one."
"We would then, by following Salih."
"Be in error and far from the truth."
And in madness and hardship.
“Hath the remembrance been given unto him alone among us? Nay, but he is a rash liar.” (54:25)
“Hath the remembrance been given unto him alone among us? Nay, but he is a rash liar.” (54:25)
“(Unto their warner it was said): To-morrow they will know who is the rash liar.” (54:26)
"Has the revelation been sent down to him?"
"And has he been singled out with prophethood from among us?"
"While he is but one of us."
In their denial that Allah would send.
A messenger from the children of Adam.
"Rather, he is a liar, full of arrogance and pride."
Allah said to them.
"Tomorrow they will know who is the great liar."
We will send the she-camel that.
Thamud asked Salih to bring forth from the rock.
Which they asked him to produce as a sign for them.
And a proof for Salih regarding the truth.
Of his prophethood, as a trial and a test for them.
So wait for them and observe what they are.
Going to do with it.
Tell them that the water is to be shared between them.
On the day of the she-camel's turn.
They would take their turns and drink from it on that day.
Each share of water on the day of the she-camel's turn.
And the milk on the day of its arrival.
Present, they would be present for it.
They would attend the water when it was its turn.
And when it came, the milk would be present.
Then Thamud called their companion, the one who hamstrung the she-camel.
Qudar ibn Salif, to hamstring the she-camel.
He reached for the she-camel with his hand.
And he hamstrung it.
I took My vengeance upon them when I punished them.
And how was My warning to those I warned among the nations.
After them, by what I did to them.
And the punishment I brought upon them.
So the blast seized those who hamstrung the she-camel.
From among Thamud, which destroyed them.
They were destroyed by the blast.
After they had been alive and watching.
Like dry branches that a builder uses for a fence.
And it has fallen.
And despite that.
And despite that.
And despite that.
“The folk of Lot rejected warnings.” (54:33)
We sent upon them a storm of stones.
Except for the family of Lot, peace be upon him.
We saved them at dawn.
As a favor from Us.
“As grace from Us. Thus We reward him who giveth thanks.” (54:35)
We reward those who are grateful.
We reward those who are grateful.
We reward those who are grateful.
The people of Lot denied the signs of Allah.
Which He warned them with and reminded them of.
We sent upon them a storm of stones.
Except for the family of Lot, who believed.
We saved them from the punishment at dawn.
We saved them from the punishment.
By a favor from Us.
Which We bestowed upon Lot and his family.
And as an honor with which We honored them.
And just as We rewarded Lot and his family.
And bestowed favor upon him.
So do We reward those who are grateful for Our favor upon them.
And he had warned them.
Of Our seizing, but they disputed.
The warnings.
Lot had warned his people of Our seizing.
But they denied his warning, out of doubt.
And they sought to seduce him.
Regarding his guests, so We blinded.
Their eyes.
So taste My punishment and My warnings.
His people sought to seduce Lot.
Regarding his guests who had stayed with him.
When Allah willed their destruction.
So We blinded their eyes until.
We made them like the rest of the face.
With no slit visible.
O people of Lot, taste the punishment that has befallen you.
And the warning with which I warned others.
Among the nations, of the retribution.
And they were overtaken in the early morning.
By a punishment that remained.
So taste My punishment and My warnings.
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance.
So is there any who will remember?
The people of Lot were overtaken.
At the break of dawn by a punishment.
That remained with them until the Day of Resurrection.
So taste, O people of Lot.
The punishment that I have brought upon you.
For your disbelief in Allah and your denial of His messenger.
And My warning to you, as I warned the nations.
By the punishment I sent upon you.
And We have made the Qur'an easy for remembrance.
For whoever wishes to remember.
“And warnings came in truth unto the house of Pharaoh” (54:41)
The warnings.
They denied all of Our signs.
So We seized them with the seizure of an Exalted.
All-Powerful One.
And the followers of Pharaoh and his people came.
Our warning of punishment.
The family of Pharaoh denied Our proofs.
And Our arguments that came to them from Us.
Is your disbelief in Allah a severe punishment that cannot be overcome?
He is All-Powerful over what He wills.
Neither incapable nor weak.
Are you, O people of Quraysh, better.
Than those upon whom I brought My vengeance?
From the people of Noah, 'Ad, and Thamud.
And the people of Lut and the family of Pharaoh.
You are just like them in your disbelief in Allah,
and in your rejection of His Messenger, just like some of these nations.
Or do you have an immunity against the punishment of Allah?
O assembly of Quraysh, the revelation has come to you regarding this,
from Allah in the scriptures.
“Or say they: We are a host victorious?” (54:44)
The multitude will be defeated,
and they will turn their backs in flight.
That is, these disbelievers from Quraysh say,
"We are a multitude that will be victorious"
against anyone who intends us harm or evil.
The multitude of the disbelievers of Quraysh will be defeated,
and they will turn their backs to the believers in Allah.
Then Allah fulfilled His promise to the believers,
and He defeated the polytheists of Quraysh on the day of Badr.
The matter is not as these polytheists claim,
that they will not be resurrected after their death.
Rather, the Hour is their appointed time for resurrection and punishment.
And the Hour is more grievous and more bitter for them
than the defeat they suffer
when they encounter the believers at Badr.
“Lo! the guilty are in error and madness.” (54:47)
“On the day when they are dragged into the Fire upon their faces (it is said unto them): Feel the touch of hell.” (54:48)
upon their faces; "Taste the touch of Saqar."
Indeed, the criminals are in error,
away from the truth, and in a state of burning,
from the intensity of the hardship and toil in falsehood.
The day these criminals are dragged
“On the day when they are dragged into the Fire upon their faces (it is said unto them): Feel the touch of hell.” (54:48)
and it is said to them, "Taste the touch of Saqar."
“Lo! We have created every thing by measure.” (54:49)
“And Our commandment is but one (commandment), as the twinkling of an eye.” (54:50)
like the twinkling of an eye.
Indeed, We have created all things
according to a measure We have ordained and decreed.
And Our command for a thing,
when We decree it and intend
for it to be, is but a single word:
"Be," and it is.
It is neither delayed nor repeated.
So what We command comes into existence as quickly as a glance
of the eye; it does not slow down nor is it delayed.
And We have already destroyed those like you,
so is there any who will take heed?
And everything they did
is in the records.
And every small and great thing
is written down.
O assembly of Quraysh, [there were] nations of the past
who were like what you are upon
of disbelief in Allah and rejection of His messengers.
So is there any who will take a lesson from that,
or be deterred by it?
And everything that those like you did,
who passed away before you,
is indeed in the books that have been written
by the recording angels against you.
Every small and great thing
is recorded in the book, written down.
Indeed, those who feared the punishment of Allah
by obeying Him and performing His obligatory duties,
and avoiding His disobedience,
[will be] in gardens and a seat of truth,
where there is no vain talk or sin,
in the presence of a Sovereign, All-Powerful over whatever He wills.
