00:05:39.879 --> 00:05:42.879 rather, she has been halted by the One Who halted the elephant.' 00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:43.879 And the One Who halted the elephant refers to 00:05:43.879 --> 00:05:47.879 when Abrahah intended to demolish the Ka'bah 00:05:47.879 --> 00:05:50.879 and brought elephants with him, 00:05:50.879 --> 00:05:55.879 headed by a huge elephant named Mahmud. 00:05:55.879 --> 00:05:58.879 Whenever they directed it toward Mecca, 00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:01.879 it refused and knelt down, 00:06:01.879 --> 00:06:04.879 but whenever they turned it in any other direction, 00:06:04.879 --> 00:06:06.879 it stood up and moved swiftly. 00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:09.879 So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 00:06:09.879 --> 00:06:12.879 'Nay, al-Qaswa' has been halted by the One Who halted the elephant.' 00:06:12.879 --> 00:06:16.879 And this was out of the mercy of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, upon this House 00:06:16.879 --> 00:06:18.879 and the people of this sanctuary. 00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:19.879 He said, 00:06:19.879 --> 00:06:21.879 'By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, 00:06:21.879 --> 00:06:23.879 they will not ask me for any plan 00:06:23.879 --> 00:06:26.879 in which they honor the sanctities of Allah 00:06:26.879 --> 00:06:29.879 except that I will grant it to them.' 00:06:29.879 --> 00:06:32.879 Then he nudged her, and she sprang up, so he diverted them 00:06:32.879 --> 00:06:35.879 until he halted at the farthest end of al-Hudaybiyyah, 00:06:35.879 --> 00:06:37.879 at a small waterhole containing very little water, 00:06:37.879 --> 00:06:40.879 which the people were drawing from sparingly drop by drop. 00:06:40.879 --> 00:06:44.879 Before long, the people drained it completely, 00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:48.879 and they complained of thirst to the Prophet (peace be upon him). 00:06:48.879 --> 00:06:50.879 He pulled an arrow from his quiver 00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:53.879 and ordered them to place it in the well. 00:06:53.879 --> 00:06:56.879 By Allah, it did not cease bubbling forth with copious water for them 00:06:56.879 --> 00:06:58.879 until all of them had quenched their thirst and departed satisfied. 00:06:58.879 --> 00:07:03.879 This was a miraculous sign testifying to the truthfulness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) 00:07:03.879 --> 00:07:08.879 and confirming that he was sent by the Lord of Glory, Blessed and Exalted. 00:07:08.879 --> 00:07:11.910 While they were in that state, 00:07:11.910 --> 00:07:14.910 Budayl ibn Warqa' al-Khuza'i arrived 00:07:14.910 --> 00:07:17.910 with a group of his people from the tribe of Khuza'ah, 00:07:17.910 --> 00:07:21.910 and they were the trusted confidants and sincere advisers of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) 00:07:21.910 --> 00:07:23.910 among the people of Tihamah. 00:07:23.910 --> 00:07:25.910 Budayl ibn Warqa' said, 00:07:25.910 --> 00:07:28.910 'I have left Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy 00:07:28.910 --> 00:07:30.910 and 'Amir ibn Lu'ayy 00:07:30.910 --> 00:07:32.910 camped at the abundant waters of al-Hudaybiyyah, 00:07:32.910 --> 00:07:35.910 accompanied by milch camels with their young; 00:07:35.910 --> 00:07:39.910 they are determined to fight you and prevent you from reaching the House.' 00:07:39.910 --> 00:07:43.910 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied, 00:07:43.910 --> 00:07:46.910 'We have not come to fight anyone; 00:07:46.910 --> 00:07:49.910 rather, we have come only to perform 'Umrah. 00:07:49.910 --> 00:07:53.910 War has already exhausted Quraysh and brought them great harm. 00:07:53.910 --> 00:07:56.910 If they wish, I will grant them a truce for a period, 00:07:56.910 --> 00:07:59.910 provided they leave me and the rest of the people alone. 00:07:59.910 --> 00:08:01.910 If I prevail, 00:08:01.910 --> 00:08:05.910 they may enter into what the people have entered if they wish; 00:08:05.910 --> 00:08:09.910 otherwise, they will have spared their blood. 00:08:09.910 --> 00:08:11.910 But if they refuse, 00:08:11.910 --> 00:08:13.910 then by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, 00:08:13.910 --> 00:08:16.910 I will fight them for this cause of mine 00:08:16.910 --> 00:08:18.910 until my neck is severed, 00:08:18.910 --> 00:08:22.000 and Allah will surely accomplish His decree.' 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:24.000 Budayl said, 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:26.000 'I shall convey to them what you say.' 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:29.000 So he departed until he came to Quraysh 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:33.000 and said, 'We have just come to you from this man, 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:35.000 and we heard him say something; 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:39.000 if you wish us to present it to you, we will do so.' 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:41.000 The foolish among them said, 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:45.000 'We have no need for you to inform us anything about him.' 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:47.000 But the people of sound judgment among them said, 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:50.000 'Tell us what you heard him say.' 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:51.000 He said, 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:54.000 'I heard him say such-and-such,' 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:58.000 and he related to them what the Prophet (peace be upon him) had said. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:01.000 Thereupon, 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud stood up and said, 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:03.000 'O my people! 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:05.000 Are you not as a father to me?' 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:06.000 They said, 'Yes.' 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:07.000 He said, 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:09.000 'And am I not as a son to you?' 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:10.000 They said, 'Yes.' 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:11.000 He said, 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:13.000 'Do you suspect me of anything?' 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:15.000 They said, 'No.' 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:16.000 He said, 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:20.000 'Do you not know that I called upon the people of 'Ukaz, 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:22.000 and when they refused to support me— 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:24.000 that is, they held back from aiding me— 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:27.000 I came to you with my family, my children, and whoever obeyed me?' 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:29.000 They said, 'Yes.' 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:30.000 He said, 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:34.000 'This man has offered you a sound and sensible proposal, 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:36.000 so accept it and let me go to him.' 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:38.000 They said, 'Go to him.' 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:43.000 So he went to him and began speaking to the Prophet (peace be upon him), 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:48.000 and the Prophet (peace be upon him) told him the like of what he had told Budayl. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.000 Thereupon, 'Urwah said, 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:52.000 "O Muhammad, 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:55.000 have you considered what will happen if you utterly destroy your own people? 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:59.000 Have you ever heard of any Arab who eradicated his own family before you? 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:01.000 But if the outcome turns against you, 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:04.000 then by Allah, I do not see faces of nobility here; 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:07.000 rather, I see a mixed rabble of people 00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:10.000 who are apt to flee and abandon you." 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:12.000 Abu Bakr then said to him, 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:14.000 "Go suck the clitoris of al-Lat! 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:17.000 Would we flee and abandon him?" 00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:20.000 Abu Bakr thus insulted 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud. 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:25.000 So 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud asked the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:27.000 "Who is this?" 00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:30.000 The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied, 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:32.000 "This is Abu Bakr." 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:33.000 'Urwah said, 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:35.000 "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:40.000 were it not for a favor you did me for which I have not yet repaid you, I would have answered you!" 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:47.000 This was because 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud owed a blood money debt before the advent of the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:51.000 and Abu Bakr had helped him pay that debt. 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:54.000 In some narrations, 'Urwah said to him, 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:56.000 "This balances out that favor." 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:58.000 The narrator said: 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:03.000 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud continued speaking to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:07.000 and whenever he spoke, he would touch his beard. 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:12.000 Meanwhile, al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah was standing at the head of the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:15.000 holding a sword and wearing a helmet. 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:21.000 Whenever 'Urwah reached out his hand toward the beard of the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:25.000 al-Mughirah struck 'Urwah's hand with the scabbard of his sword 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:26.000 and said to him, 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:31.000 "Keep your hand away from the beard of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him!" 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:34.200 Now 'Urwah was a highly venerated man among his people. 00:11:34.200 --> 00:11:39.200 When the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:11:39.200 --> 00:11:40.200 they had said, 00:11:40.200 --> 00:11:45.200 “And they say: If only this Qur'an had been revealed to some great man of the two towns?” (43:31) 00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:48.200 referring by that to 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud. 00:11:48.200 --> 00:11:51.230 So 'Urwah raised his head and asked, 00:11:51.230 --> 00:11:52.230 "Who is this?" 00:11:52.230 --> 00:11:54.230 They said to him, 00:11:54.230 --> 00:11:56.230 "Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah." 00:11:56.230 --> 00:11:58.230 'Urwah said to him, 00:11:58.230 --> 00:11:59.230 "O treacherous one! 00:11:59.230 --> 00:12:02.230 Am I not still striving to clean up your treachery?" 00:12:02.230 --> 00:12:05.230 For al-Mughirah had accompanied a group of people during the pre-Islamic era of ignorance, 00:12:05.230 --> 00:12:09.230 betrayed them, killed them, and seized their wealth, 00:12:09.230 --> 00:12:11.230 then came and accepted Islam. 00:12:11.230 --> 00:12:14.230 The Prophet, peace be upon him, had said to him, 00:12:14.230 --> 00:12:17.230 "As for your Islam, I accept it; 00:12:17.230 --> 00:12:20.230 as for the wealth, I will have nothing to do with it." 00:12:20.230 --> 00:12:25.320 Thus it is mentioned that 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud paid the money on behalf of al-Mughirah 00:12:25.320 --> 00:12:27.320 and settled the blood money debts for him, 00:12:27.320 --> 00:12:29.320 because 'Urwah was from Thaqif, 00:12:29.320 --> 00:12:31.320 and al-Mughirah was also from Thaqif. 00:12:31.320 --> 00:12:37.320 Then 'Urwah began closely observing the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him. 00:12:37.320 --> 00:12:38.320 He said: 00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:43.320 "By Allah, whenever the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, spat out mucus, 00:12:43.320 --> 00:12:46.320 it fell into the palm of one of them, 00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:49.320 and he would rub it over his face and skin. 00:12:49.320 --> 00:12:52.320 When he commanded them, they rushed to fulfill his command. 00:12:52.320 --> 00:12:56.320 When he performed ablution, they almost fought over the remaining water. 00:12:56.320 --> 00:12:59.320 And when he spoke, they lowered their voices in his presence, 00:12:59.320 --> 00:13:03.320 never gazing directly at him out of reverence for him." 00:13:03.320 --> 00:13:06.320 It is reported from 'Amr ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:13:06.320 --> 00:13:08.320 that he said: 00:13:08.320 --> 00:13:09.320 "Before I accepted Islam, 00:13:09.320 --> 00:13:13.320 Muhammad was the most hated of all Allah's creation to me. 00:13:13.320 --> 00:13:14.320 But when I embraced Islam, 00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:18.320 by Allah, he became the most beloved of all Allah's creation to me. 00:13:18.320 --> 00:13:21.320 By Allah, I could never look my fill at him, 00:13:21.320 --> 00:13:24.320 out of awe for him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:13:24.320 --> 00:13:27.320 to the extent that if I were asked to describe him, I could not." 00:13:27.320 --> 00:13:29.740 Al-Miswar said: 00:13:29.740 --> 00:13:32.740 'Urwah then returned to his companions 00:13:32.740 --> 00:13:34.740 and said, "O my people! 00:13:34.740 --> 00:13:37.740 By Allah, I have visited kings; 00:13:37.740 --> 00:13:41.740 I have visited Caesar, Chosroes, and the Negus. 00:13:41.740 --> 00:13:45.740 By Allah, I have never seen a king whose companions revere him 00:13:45.740 --> 00:13:50.740 the way the Companions of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, revere Muhammad. 00:13:50.740 --> 00:13:53.740 By Allah, if he spits out mucus, 00:13:53.740 --> 00:13:56.740 it falls into the palm of one of them, 00:13:56.740 --> 00:13:59.740 and he rubs it over his face and skin. 00:13:59.740 --> 00:14:02.740 When he commands them, they rush to fulfill his command. 00:14:02.740 --> 00:14:06.740 When he performs ablution, they almost fight over the remaining water. 00:14:06.740 --> 00:14:10.740 When they speak in his presence, they lower their voices, 00:14:10.740 --> 00:14:15.059 and they do not gaze directly at him out of reverence for him. 00:14:15.059 --> 00:14:18.059 These actions that 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud witnessed 00:14:18.059 --> 00:14:21.059 from the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him— 00:14:21.059 --> 00:14:24.059 they only did so for a specific reason. 00:14:24.059 --> 00:14:28.059 Namely, when 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud first arrived, he had claimed, 00:14:28.059 --> 00:14:32.059 'These are a mixed rabble of people who will abandon you; 00:14:32.059 --> 00:14:36.059 they are not true warriors and will leave you to be killed.' 00:14:36.059 --> 00:14:40.059 So the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, demonstrated to him 00:14:40.059 --> 00:14:44.059 a fraction of their profound love for the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:14:44.059 --> 00:14:47.059 It was not their regular habit that whenever he spat, 00:14:47.059 --> 00:14:49.059 they would take his mucus; 00:14:49.059 --> 00:14:52.059 this was never reported in Medina, 00:14:52.059 --> 00:14:54.059 except on this particular occasion. 00:14:54.059 --> 00:14:57.059 The same applies to their fighting over his ablution water. 00:14:57.059 --> 00:14:59.059 As for the other matters, 00:14:59.059 --> 00:15:02.059 such as lowering the voice and refraining from gazing directly 00:15:02.059 --> 00:15:04.059 at the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:15:04.059 --> 00:15:06.059 and rushing to fulfill his command— 00:15:06.059 --> 00:15:09.059 these were observed in every place and time. 00:15:09.059 --> 00:15:11.059 'Urwah said to his people, 00:15:11.059 --> 00:15:15.059 "He has presented to you a reasonable proposal, so accept it." 00:15:15.059 --> 00:15:18.159 Then a man from the tribe of Banu Kinanah, 00:15:18.159 --> 00:15:20.159 named al-Hulays, 00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:22.159 who was from the Ahabish confederacy, 00:15:22.159 --> 00:15:25.159 said, "Let me go to him." 00:15:25.159 --> 00:15:26.159 They said, "Go to him." 00:15:26.159 --> 00:15:31.159 When he approached the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his Companions, 00:15:31.159 --> 00:15:34.159 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, 00:15:34.159 --> 00:15:36.159 "This is so-and-so, 00:15:36.159 --> 00:15:39.159 and he is from a people who revere the sacrificial animals, 00:15:39.159 --> 00:15:41.159 so drive them out for him to see." 00:15:41.159 --> 00:15:42.159 So they were driven out before him, 00:15:42.159 --> 00:15:45.159 and the people met him reciting the *talbiyah*. 00:15:45.159 --> 00:15:47.159 When he saw that, he said, 00:15:47.159 --> 00:15:49.159 "Glory be to Allah! 00:15:49.159 --> 00:15:53.159 It is not fitting that these people be turned away from the Sacred House." 00:15:53.159 --> 00:15:56.159 So when he returned to his companions, he said, 00:15:56.159 --> 00:15:59.159 "I saw the sacrificial animals garlanded and marked; 00:15:59.159 --> 00:16:02.159 I do not believe they should be turned away from the Sacred House." 00:16:02.159 --> 00:16:07.159 This demonstrates to us that every occasion demands its appropriate response, 00:16:07.159 --> 00:16:10.159 and that sacrificial guidance animals (*hady*) are not exclusive to the Hajj pilgrimage, 00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:13.159 but rather even the 'Umrah pilgrimage includes a *hady*. 00:16:13.159 --> 00:16:16.159 Garlanding (*taqlid*) refers to placing an identifying mark on the camels, 00:16:16.159 --> 00:16:19.159 by which anyone who sees them recognizes that they are sacrificial animals 00:16:19.159 --> 00:16:22.159 designated for Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He. 00:16:22.159 --> 00:16:24.159 As for marking (*ish'ar*), 00:16:24.159 --> 00:16:27.159 it consists of making a small incision in the hump so that blood emerges 00:16:27.159 --> 00:16:30.159 and trickles down the body of the camel. 00:16:30.159 --> 00:16:34.159 Although this might outwardly appear to cause harm to the animal, 00:16:34.159 --> 00:16:37.159 it contains numerous benefits: 00:16:37.159 --> 00:16:41.159 among them is that when an onlooker sees it from afar, 00:16:41.159 --> 00:16:45.159 he recognizes that it has been designated as a sacrifice for Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, 00:16:45.159 --> 00:16:48.159 so no one dares to steal it;
