In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
A Summary of the Prophetic biography (Seerah).
The conversion to Islam of Iyas Ibn Mu'adh al-Ashhali, may Allah be pleased with him.
Iyas Ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him, embraced Islam.
He was the very first among the Ansar to accept Islam.
The story of his conversion was narrated by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad.
And by al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak with a hasan (sound) chain of narration.
On the authority of Mahmud Ibn Labid, a brother of the Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal.
He said: When Abu al-Haysar,
Anas Ibn Rafi', came to Makkah,
Accompanied by some young men from the Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal,
Among whom was Iyas Ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him,
Seeking an alliance with the Quraysh against their rivals, the Khazraj.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, heard of them.
He came to them and sat with them.
He said: "Would you like something better than what you have come for?"
They asked: "And what is that?"
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
"I am the Messenger of Allah.
He sent me to His servants to call them to worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him.
And He has revealed a Book to me."
Then he spoke to them about Islam.
And he recited the Qur'an to them.
Iyas Ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him, said—
For he was a young lad—
"O my people,
By Allah, this is better than what you have come for."
He said: Abu al-Haysar then took a handful of gravel,
And struck the face of Iyas Ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him, with it,
Saying: "Leave us be!
By my life, we have come for something other than this."
Iyas fell silent.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood up,
And they returned to Madinah.
Then the Battle of Bu'ath took place between the Aws and the Khazraj.
He said:
Not long after, Iyas Ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him, passed away.
Mahmud Ibn Labid said:
Those of my people who were present at his death informed me,
That they kept hearing him declaring the oneness of Allah (tahlil), magnifying Him (takbir),
Praising Him (tahmid), and glorifying Him (tasbih) until he died.
They had no doubt that he had died a Muslim.
He had truly embraced the spirit of Islam in that gathering,
When he heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, what he heard.
