Lord of the worlds, 00:00:34.939 --> 00:00:36.939 and peace and blessings 00:00:36.939 --> 00:00:38.939 be upon our Prophet Muhammad, 00:00:38.939 --> 00:00:40.939 and upon his family and Companions, 00:00:40.939 --> 00:00:42.939 altogether. 00:00:42.939 --> 00:00:44.939 To proceed: 00:00:44.939 --> 00:00:47.200 In the land of Iraq, 00:00:47.200 --> 00:00:49.200 and in a place near 00:00:49.200 --> 00:00:51.200 Mosul, 00:00:51.200 --> 00:00:53.200 there was an ancient city 00:00:53.200 --> 00:00:55.200 called Nineveh. 00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:57.299 It had a dense 00:00:57.299 --> 00:00:59.299 population and an advanced 00:00:59.299 --> 00:01:01.520 civilization. 00:01:01.520 --> 00:01:03.520 The people of that city 00:01:03.520 --> 00:01:05.519 were idolaters 00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:07.519 who worshipped idols, 00:01:07.519 --> 00:01:09.519 remained devoted to them, 00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:11.519 committed immoral acts, 00:01:11.519 --> 00:01:13.709 and engaged in them openly. 00:01:13.709 --> 00:01:15.709 So Allah sent to them 00:01:15.709 --> 00:01:17.709 a righteous man from among themselves 00:01:17.709 --> 00:01:19.709 named Yunus Ibn Matta, 00:01:19.709 --> 00:01:21.709 from the lineage of Ya'qub 00:01:21.709 --> 00:01:23.709 Ibn Ishaq Ibn Ibrahim, 00:01:23.709 --> 00:01:25.709 peace be upon them 00:01:25.709 --> 00:01:29.120 all. 00:01:29.120 --> 00:01:31.120 Yunus, peace be upon him, began, 00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:33.120 and called his people 00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:35.120 to the worship of Allah alone, 00:01:35.120 --> 00:01:37.120 without any partner, 00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:39.120 and to cast aside idols and images. 00:01:39.120 --> 00:01:41.120 But his people 00:01:41.120 --> 00:01:43.120 met his call with denial, 00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:45.120 disbelief, and obstinate rejection, 00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:47.120 as was the case with all the other nations 00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:49.150 toward their prophets. 00:01:49.150 --> 00:01:51.150 Yet despite this, 00:01:51.150 --> 00:01:53.150 Yunus, peace be upon him, continued 00:01:53.150 --> 00:01:55.150 calling them for many years, 00:01:55.150 --> 00:01:57.150 without tiring or wearying. 00:01:57.150 --> 00:01:59.219 He was met with 00:01:59.219 --> 00:02:01.219 rejection and threats 00:02:01.219 --> 00:02:03.219 of torment and murder, 00:02:03.219 --> 00:02:05.219 but that did not deter him 00:02:05.219 --> 00:02:07.500 from his goal and his mission. 00:02:07.500 --> 00:02:09.500 After some time, 00:02:09.500 --> 00:02:11.500 when his people proved utterly unyielding 00:02:11.500 --> 00:02:13.500 and refused to respond to him, 00:02:13.500 --> 00:02:15.500 Allah revealed to him 00:02:15.500 --> 00:02:17.500 that torment would come upon them 00:02:17.500 --> 00:02:19.599 after three nights. 00:02:19.599 --> 00:02:21.599 So Yunus, peace be upon him, stood 00:02:21.599 --> 00:02:23.599 among his people 00:02:23.599 --> 00:02:25.599 and warned them of the descent of the torment 00:02:25.599 --> 00:02:27.599 after three nights. 00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:29.659 Then, in the middle 00:02:29.659 --> 00:02:31.659 of that night, he departed from among them 00:02:31.659 --> 00:02:33.659 through his own personal judgment, 00:02:33.659 --> 00:02:35.659 and did not wait 00:02:35.659 --> 00:02:37.659 for permission from his Lord, 00:02:37.659 --> 00:02:39.659 assuming, peace be upon him, 00:02:39.659 --> 00:02:41.659 that he was justified in leaving 00:02:41.659 --> 00:02:43.659 before the torment descended 00:02:43.659 --> 00:02:45.659 upon his people, 00:02:45.659 --> 00:02:47.659 and that Allah would not constrain him 00:02:47.659 --> 00:02:49.659 for departing after he had 00:02:49.659 --> 00:02:51.659 delivered the message with which 00:02:51.659 --> 00:02:53.699 Allah had charged him. 00:02:53.699 --> 00:02:56.530 So he set out toward the sea. 00:02:56.530 --> 00:02:58.530 As for the people of Yunus, peace be upon him, 00:02:58.530 --> 00:03:00.530 in the land of Nineveh, 00:03:00.530 --> 00:03:02.530 when morning broke upon them, 00:03:02.530 --> 00:03:04.530 the torment began to envelop them; 00:03:04.530 --> 00:03:06.530 they were overshadowed by 00:03:06.530 --> 00:03:08.530 a black cloud 00:03:08.530 --> 00:03:10.530 emitting dense 00:03:10.530 --> 00:03:12.530 black smoke. 00:03:12.530 --> 00:03:14.530 It hung above their heads 00:03:14.530 --> 00:03:16.530 by about a mile; 00:03:16.530 --> 00:03:18.530 the sky grew dark, 00:03:18.530 --> 00:03:20.530 and the smoke descended upon them 00:03:20.530 --> 00:03:22.530 until it engulfed them throughout their city, 00:03:22.530 --> 00:03:24.530 and blackened the roofs 00:03:24.530 --> 00:03:26.530 of their houses. 00:03:26.530 --> 00:03:28.530 When they saw that, 00:03:28.530 --> 00:03:30.530 fear and panic seized them, 00:03:30.530 --> 00:03:32.530 they became certain of their destruction, 00:03:32.530 --> 00:03:34.530 and they realized that Yunus 00:03:34.530 --> 00:03:36.530 did not lie. 00:03:36.530 --> 00:03:38.530 So they sent people to seek him out, 00:03:38.530 --> 00:03:40.530 but they could not find him. 00:03:40.530 --> 00:03:42.530 Then Allah cast into their hearts 00:03:42.530 --> 00:03:44.590 repentance. 00:03:44.590 --> 00:03:46.590 So they went out into the open plain themselves, 00:03:46.590 --> 00:03:48.590 along with their women, their children, 00:03:48.590 --> 00:03:50.590 and their beasts. 00:03:50.590 --> 00:03:52.590 They wore coarse, 00:03:52.590 --> 00:03:54.590 rough sackcloth, 00:03:54.590 --> 00:03:56.659 and they separated every 00:03:56.659 --> 00:03:58.659 mother from her nursing infant, 00:03:58.659 --> 00:04:00.659 and every animal 00:04:00.659 --> 00:04:02.750 from its young. 00:04:02.750 --> 00:04:04.750 Then they cried out in weeping 00:04:04.750 --> 00:04:06.750 to Allah Almighty, 00:04:06.750 --> 00:04:08.750 screaming, beseeching Him, 00:04:08.750 --> 00:04:10.750 and humbling themselves before Him. 00:04:10.750 --> 00:04:12.879 The men and women wept, 00:04:12.879 --> 00:04:14.879 as did the sons and daughters, 00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:16.879 and the cattle, 00:04:16.879 --> 00:04:18.879 the beasts, and the livestock 00:04:18.879 --> 00:04:20.879 raised their cries. 00:04:20.879 --> 00:04:22.879 It was a momentous, 00:04:22.879 --> 00:04:24.879 terrifying hour, 00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:26.879 in which 00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:28.879 the sounds of weeping and wailing blended together 00:04:28.879 --> 00:04:30.879 from men, women, 00:04:30.879 --> 00:04:32.879 children, and beasts. 00:04:32.879 --> 00:04:34.879 Thereupon, Allah Almighty lifted 00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:36.879 the torment from them by His mercy, 00:04:36.879 --> 00:04:38.879 after it had overshadowed them 00:04:38.879 --> 00:04:40.879 and hovered over their heads 00:04:40.879 --> 00:04:42.879 like dark patches of night. 00:04:42.879 --> 00:04:44.879 Thus Allah Almighty lifted from them 00:04:44.879 --> 00:04:46.879 the torment by His mercy, 00:04:46.879 --> 00:04:48.879 after it had overshadowed them 00:04:48.879 --> 00:04:50.879 above their heads 00:04:50.879 --> 00:04:53.040 like patches of dark night. 00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:55.040 And no nation among all nations 00:04:55.040 --> 00:04:57.040 ever had the torment lifted from it 00:04:57.040 --> 00:04:59.040 after witnessing it with their own eyes, 00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:01.040 except for the people of Yunus, peace be upon him. 00:05:01.040 --> 00:05:03.490 Allah Almighty said: 00:05:05.490 --> 00:05:07.490 "Indeed, those against whom 00:05:07.490 --> 00:05:09.490 the word 00:05:09.490 --> 00:05:11.490 of your Lord has come to pass will not believe, 00:05:13.490 --> 00:05:15.490 even if every sign 00:05:15.490 --> 00:05:17.490 comes to them, 00:05:17.490 --> 00:05:19.490 until they see the painful 00:05:19.490 --> 00:05:21.490 torment. 00:05:21.490 --> 00:05:23.490 If only there had been 00:05:23.490 --> 00:05:25.490 a single city that believed 00:05:25.490 --> 00:05:27.490 so its faith profited it— 00:05:27.490 --> 00:05:29.490 except for the people of Yunus: 00:05:29.490 --> 00:05:31.490 when they believed, 00:05:33.490 --> 00:05:35.490 We removed from them 00:05:35.490 --> 00:05:37.490 the disgrace of torment 00:05:37.490 --> 00:05:39.490 in the life of this world." 00:05:39.490 --> 00:05:41.490 "We removed from them 00:05:41.490 --> 00:05:43.490 the disgrace of torment 00:05:43.490 --> 00:05:45.490 in the life of this world." 00:05:45.490 --> 00:05:47.490 As for the Prophet of Allah, Yunus, 00:05:47.490 --> 00:05:50.740 peace be upon him, 00:05:50.740 --> 00:05:52.740 his story was 00:05:52.740 --> 00:05:54.740 that he made his way to the sea. 00:05:54.740 --> 00:05:56.740 He requested the crew 00:05:56.740 --> 00:05:58.740 of a ship to carry him 00:05:58.740 --> 00:06:00.740 along with them aboard their vessel, 00:06:00.740 --> 00:06:02.740 and so they took him aboard. 00:06:02.740 --> 00:06:04.740 But when the ship reached 00:06:04.740 --> 00:06:06.740 the open sea, 00:06:06.740 --> 00:06:08.740 the waters surged and raged violently around them, 00:06:08.740 --> 00:06:10.740 and the ship and everyone on board 00:06:10.740 --> 00:06:12.740 were completely surrounded by danger. 00:06:12.740 --> 00:06:14.800 When the passengers realized 00:06:14.800 --> 00:06:16.800 what was befalling them 00:06:16.800 --> 00:06:18.800 and saw impending doom, 00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:20.800 they said to one another: 00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:22.800 "There is no escape for you 00:06:22.800 --> 00:06:24.800 from that which is descending upon you 00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:26.800 unless you lighten the load 00:06:26.800 --> 00:06:28.800 by casting off some of those aboard the ship; 00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:30.800 for the destruction of a few 00:06:30.800 --> 00:06:32.800 is lesser than the destruction 00:06:32.800 --> 00:06:34.800 of all." 00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:36.800 So they cast lots among themselves, 00:06:36.800 --> 00:06:38.800 intending to throw into the sea whoever's name 00:06:38.800 --> 00:06:40.829 was drawn. 00:06:40.829 --> 00:06:42.829 And the lot fell upon Yunus; 00:06:42.829 --> 00:06:44.860 it was drawn against him, peace be upon him. 00:06:44.860 --> 00:06:46.860 But they could not bring themselves 00:06:46.860 --> 00:06:48.860 to throw him into the sea, 00:06:48.860 --> 00:06:50.860 because of what they had seen 00:06:50.860 --> 00:06:52.860 in him of noble character 00:06:52.860 --> 00:06:54.860 and noble traits, 00:06:54.860 --> 00:06:56.899 so they cast lots a second 00:06:56.899 --> 00:06:58.899 time, 00:06:58.899 --> 00:07:00.899 yet it fell upon him again. 00:07:00.899 --> 00:07:02.899 They were still unwilling to accept that, 00:07:02.899 --> 00:07:04.899 so they cast lots a third 00:07:04.899 --> 00:07:06.899 time, 00:07:06.899 --> 00:07:08.899 and once more, it fell upon him. 00:07:08.899 --> 00:07:10.899 Yunus knew that behind 00:07:10.899 --> 00:07:12.899 this lay a divine decree, 00:07:12.899 --> 00:07:14.899 and he realized his mistake 00:07:14.899 --> 00:07:16.899 in having departed from his people 00:07:16.899 --> 00:07:18.899 before being granted permission to do so. 00:07:18.899 --> 00:07:20.930 Thereupon, peace be upon him, he stood up 00:07:20.930 --> 00:07:22.930 and cast himself 00:07:22.930 --> 00:07:24.930 into the sea. 00:07:24.930 --> 00:07:26.930 The waves immediately subsided, 00:07:26.930 --> 00:07:28.930 and the ship steadied 00:07:28.930 --> 00:07:32.370 with all aboard. 00:07:32.370 --> 00:07:34.370 And while Yunus, peace be upon him, 00:07:34.370 --> 00:07:36.370 was tossing in the sea waters, 00:07:36.370 --> 00:07:38.370 Allah inspired the whale 00:07:38.370 --> 00:07:40.370 to swallow him, 00:07:40.370 --> 00:07:42.370 enclosing him within its belly, 00:07:42.370 --> 00:07:44.370 without consuming his flesh 00:07:44.370 --> 00:07:46.370 or crushing his bones. 00:07:46.370 --> 00:07:48.430 Thus, the whale 00:07:48.430 --> 00:07:50.430 swallowed him by the command of his Lord. 00:07:50.430 --> 00:07:52.430 It served as 00:07:52.430 --> 00:07:54.430 a prison for Yunus, peace be upon him, 00:07:54.430 --> 00:07:56.430 or rather a safe 00:07:56.430 --> 00:07:58.589 sanctuary. 00:07:58.589 --> 00:08:00.589 Inside the belly of the whale, 00:08:00.589 --> 00:08:02.589 Yunus, peace be upon him, thought 00:08:02.589 --> 00:08:04.589 that he had died, 00:08:04.589 --> 00:08:06.589 but when he moved his limbs, 00:08:06.589 --> 00:08:08.589 he found that they moved. 00:08:08.589 --> 00:08:10.589 He fell prostrating before Allah 00:08:10.589 --> 00:08:12.589 and said: 00:08:12.589 --> 00:08:14.589 "My Lord, I have taken for You 00:08:14.589 --> 00:08:16.589 a place of worship where no one has ever 00:08:16.589 --> 00:08:18.589 worshipped You before." 00:08:18.589 --> 00:08:20.779 Yunus remained inside 00:08:20.779 --> 00:08:22.779 the belly of the whale 00:08:22.779 --> 00:08:24.779 as it cleaved through the waves, 00:08:24.779 --> 00:08:26.779 plunging into the ocean depths, 00:08:26.779 --> 00:08:28.779 moving through layers of darkness, 00:08:28.779 --> 00:08:30.779 one atop the other: 00:08:30.779 --> 00:08:32.940 the darkness of the whale's belly, 00:08:32.940 --> 00:08:34.940 enveloped by the darkness 00:08:34.940 --> 00:08:36.940 of the sea, and enveloped by 00:08:36.940 --> 00:08:39.039 the darkness of the night. 00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:41.039 When the whale carried him down 00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:43.039 to the ocean floor, 00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:45.039 Yunus, peace be upon him, heard 00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:47.039 the pebbles and marine creatures 00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:49.039 glorifying Allah. 00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:51.039 He, too, began to glorify Him 00:08:51.039 --> 00:08:53.039 from inside the belly of the whale, 00:08:53.039 --> 00:08:55.039 crying out: 00:08:55.039 --> 00:08:57.039 “And (mention) Dhu'n-Nun, when he went off in anger and deemed that We had no power over him, but he cried out in the darkness, saying: There is no Allah save Thee. Be Thou Glorified! Lo! I have been a wrong-doer.” (21:87) 00:08:57.039 --> 00:08:59.039 "Glory be to You!" 00:08:59.039 --> 00:09:01.039 “And (mention) Dhu'n-Nun, when he went off in anger and deemed that We had no power over him, but he cried out in the darkness, saying: There is no Allah save Thee. Be Thou Glorified! Lo! I have been a wrong-doer.” (21:87) 00:09:01.039 --> 00:09:03.259 Then the angels 00:09:03.259 --> 00:09:05.259 heard his glorification. 00:09:05.259 --> 00:09:07.259 They said, "O our Lord, 00:09:07.259 --> 00:09:09.259 a familiar voice, 00:09:09.259 --> 00:09:11.259 from a familiar servant, 00:09:11.259 --> 00:09:13.259 coming from an unfamiliar place; 00:09:13.259 --> 00:09:15.259 we know not where it is." 00:09:15.259 --> 00:09:17.460 Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 00:09:17.460 --> 00:09:19.460 "That is My servant Yunus." 00:09:19.460 --> 00:09:21.460 The angels said: 00:09:21.460 --> 00:09:23.460 "O our Lord, 00:09:23.460 --> 00:09:25.460 Your servant Yunus, 00:09:25.460 --> 00:09:27.460 from whom righteous deeds 00:09:27.460 --> 00:09:29.460 used to ascend to You 00:09:29.460 --> 00:09:31.460 each and every day?" 00:09:31.460 --> 00:09:33.679 Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 00:09:33.679 --> 00:09:35.679 "Yes." 00:09:35.679 --> 00:09:39.059 Allah Almighty answered 00:09:39.059 --> 00:09:41.059 Yunus's supplication 00:09:41.059 --> 00:09:43.149 and his glorification. 00:09:43.149 --> 00:09:45.149 Had he not been of those who glorified Allah 00:09:45.149 --> 00:09:47.149 within the belly of the whale, 00:09:47.149 --> 00:09:49.149 and among those who glorified Him 00:09:49.149 --> 00:09:51.149 in his life prior to that, 00:09:51.149 --> 00:09:53.149 he would surely have remained in its belly 00:09:53.149 --> 00:09:55.149 until the Day of Judgment. 00:09:55.149 --> 00:09:57.500 Allah Almighty said: 00:09:57.500 --> 00:09:59.539 ﴿And [mention] the Man of the Whale, 00:09:59.539 --> 00:10:01.539 when he went off 00:10:01.539 --> 00:10:03.539 in anger 00:10:03.539 --> 00:10:05.539 and thought 00:10:05.539 --> 00:10:07.539 that We would not decree hardship upon him. 00:10:07.539 --> 00:10:09.539 And he called out 00:10:09.539 --> 00:10:11.539 in the depths of darkness: 00:10:11.539 --> 00:10:13.539 'There is no deity 00:10:13.539 --> 00:10:15.539 except You; 00:10:15.539 --> 00:10:17.539 glory be to You! 00:10:17.539 --> 00:10:19.539 Indeed, 00:10:19.539 --> 00:10:21.539 I have been 00:10:21.539 --> 00:10:23.539 of the wrongdoers.' 00:10:23.539 --> 00:10:25.539 So We responded to him 00:10:25.539 --> 00:10:27.539 and saved him 00:10:27.539 --> 00:10:29.539 from the distress. 00:10:29.539 --> 00:10:31.539 And thus 00:10:31.539 --> 00:10:33.539 do We save 00:10:33.539 --> 00:10:36.240 the believers.﴾ 00:10:36.240 --> 00:10:38.240 Then Allah commanded the whale 00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:40.240 to cast him onto the open shore, 00:10:40.240 --> 00:10:42.240 and the whale cast him out 00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:44.240 after three nights 00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:46.240 onto the beach, 00:10:46.240 --> 00:10:48.240 sick and emaciated, 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:50.240 weak and frail, 00:10:50.240 --> 00:10:52.340 like a newly hatched chick 00:10:52.340 --> 00:10:54.340 without any feathers. 00:10:54.340 --> 00:10:56.340 And Allah caused to grow over him 00:10:56.340 --> 00:10:58.340 a plant of gourd— 00:10:58.340 --> 00:11:00.500 which is the pumpkin plant. 00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:02.500 The nature of this plant 00:11:02.500 --> 00:11:04.500 made it uniquely suited 00:11:04.500 --> 00:11:06.500 for someone in the condition 00:11:06.500 --> 00:11:08.500 of Yunus: 00:11:08.500 --> 00:11:10.500 its leaves are broad and soft, 00:11:10.500 --> 00:11:12.500 suitable as bedding and covering, 00:11:12.500 --> 00:11:14.500 gentle, 00:11:14.500 --> 00:11:16.500 exquisitely smooth, 00:11:16.500 --> 00:11:18.500 and flies do not approach it. 00:11:18.500 --> 00:11:20.500 In addition, 00:11:20.500 --> 00:11:22.500 its produce can be eaten raw 00:11:22.500 --> 00:11:24.659 or cooked. 00:11:24.659 --> 00:11:26.659 Allah also provided for him wild beasts 00:11:26.659 --> 00:11:28.659 of the land that grazed from 00:11:28.659 --> 00:11:30.659 the earth, 00:11:30.659 --> 00:11:32.659 then came to him and gave him to drink 00:11:32.659 --> 00:11:34.659 of their milk every morning 00:11:34.659 --> 00:11:36.659 and evening, 00:11:36.659 --> 00:11:38.659 until his body recovered 00:11:38.659 --> 00:11:41.940 and his health was restored. 00:11:41.940 --> 00:11:43.940 After Yunus, peace be upon him, had healed 00:11:43.940 --> 00:11:45.940 from all that had afflicted him 00:11:45.940 --> 00:11:47.940 in the belly of the whale, 00:11:47.940 --> 00:11:49.940 Allah sent him once again 00:11:49.940 --> 00:11:51.940 to his people, after 00:11:51.940 --> 00:11:53.940 informing him of their faith 00:11:53.940 --> 00:11:55.940 and that they were awaiting his return. 00:11:55.940 --> 00:11:58.029 When he arrived among them, 00:11:58.029 --> 00:12:00.029 he found that they had abandoned the worship 00:12:00.029 --> 00:12:02.029 of idols 00:12:02.029 --> 00:12:04.029 and turned to Allah as true monotheists. 00:12:04.029 --> 00:12:06.059 So he resided 00:12:06.059 --> 00:12:08.059 among them as a guide and counselor 00:12:08.059 --> 00:12:10.059 for an appointed period 00:12:10.059 --> 00:12:12.379 of time. 00:12:12.379 --> 00:12:14.379 Allah Almighty said: 00:12:14.379 --> 00:12:16.419 ﴿And indeed, Yunus 00:12:16.419 --> 00:12:18.419 was among the messengers, 00:12:18.419 --> 00:12:20.419 when 00:12:20.419 --> 00:12:22.419 “When he fled unto the laden ship,” (37:140) 00:12:24.419 --> 00:12:26.419 he cast lots and was 00:12:26.419 --> 00:12:28.419 among the losers. 00:12:28.419 --> 00:12:30.419 Then the whale swallowed him 00:12:30.419 --> 00:12:32.419 while he was blameworthy. 00:12:32.419 --> 00:12:34.419 And had 00:12:34.419 --> 00:12:36.419 he not been of 00:12:36.419 --> 00:12:38.419 those who glorify Allah, 00:12:38.419 --> 00:12:40.419 he would have remained inside its belly 00:12:40.419 --> 00:12:42.419 until the Day they are resurrected. 00:12:44.419 --> 00:12:46.419 But We cast him onto the open shore 00:12:46.419 --> 00:12:48.419 while he was ill. 00:12:50.419 --> 00:12:52.419 And We caused to grow over him 00:12:52.419 --> 00:12:54.419 a plant 00:12:54.419 --> 00:12:56.539 of gourd. 00:12:56.539 --> 00:12:58.539 And We sent him to [a people of] 00:12:58.539 --> 00:13:00.539 “And We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more” (37:147) 00:13:02.539 --> 00:13:04.539 and they believed, so We gave them enjoyment 00:13:04.539 --> 00:13:06.539 for a time.﴾ 00:13:06.539 --> 00:13:09.789 Dear 00:13:09.789 --> 00:13:11.789 respected brothers, 00:13:11.789 --> 00:13:13.789 Yunus is mentioned in the Qur'an 00:13:13.789 --> 00:13:15.789 four times, 00:13:15.789 --> 00:13:17.789 and he is referenced by the titles 00:13:17.789 --> 00:13:19.789 "Companion of the Fish" and "Dhu al-Nun" 00:13:19.789 --> 00:13:21.820 twice. 00:13:21.820 --> 00:13:23.820 His story contains numerous 00:13:23.820 --> 00:13:25.889 lessons and morals, 00:13:25.889 --> 00:13:28.299 among the most significant of which is: 00:13:28.299 --> 00:13:30.299 first, Allah's protection 00:13:30.299 --> 00:13:32.299 of His allies and righteous 00:13:32.299 --> 00:13:34.299 servants, even 00:13:34.299 --> 00:13:36.299 in the midst of their affliction. 00:13:36.299 --> 00:13:38.299 Furthermore, the reproach of Allah Almighty 00:13:38.299 --> 00:13:40.299 toward Yunus, peace be upon him, 00:13:40.299 --> 00:13:42.299 was a gentle reproach; 00:13:42.299 --> 00:13:44.299 for He made the belly of the whale 00:13:44.299 --> 00:13:46.299 a safe haven for him, 00:13:46.299 --> 00:13:48.299 and commanded it neither to break 00:13:48.299 --> 00:13:50.299 a bone of his nor to consume 00:13:50.299 --> 00:13:52.299 his flesh. 00:13:52.299 --> 00:13:54.299 This is a tremendous sign 00:13:54.299 --> 00:13:56.299 demonstrate his honored status 00:13:56.299 --> 00:13:58.299 with Allah, the Exalted and Majestic. 00:13:58.299 --> 00:14:00.779 Second: 00:14:00.779 --> 00:14:02.779 Whoever knows Allah in times of ease, 00:14:02.779 --> 00:14:04.779 Allah will know him in 00:14:04.779 --> 00:14:06.779 times of hardship; 00:14:06.779 --> 00:14:08.779 and whoever is with Allah, 00:14:08.779 --> 00:14:10.779 Allah will be with him. 00:14:10.779 --> 00:14:13.230 Third: 00:14:13.230 --> 00:14:15.230 The virtue of the supplication of Yunus, peace be upon him: 00:14:15.230 --> 00:14:17.230 "There is no deity 00:14:17.230 --> 00:14:19.230 except You, exalted are You! 00:14:19.230 --> 00:14:21.230 Indeed, I have been of 00:14:21.230 --> 00:14:23.360 the wrongdoers." 00:14:23.360 --> 00:14:25.360 It is narrated in the hadith 00:14:25.360 --> 00:14:27.360 on the authority of Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqas, 00:14:27.360 --> 00:14:29.360 may Allah be pleased with him, who said: 00:14:29.360 --> 00:14:31.360 I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:14:31.360 --> 00:14:33.360 say: 00:14:33.360 --> 00:14:35.360 "The supplication of Dhun-Nun 00:14:35.360 --> 00:14:37.360 when he was in the belly of the whale: 00:14:37.360 --> 00:14:39.360 “And (mention) Dhu'n-Nun, when he went off in anger and deemed that We had no power over him, but he cried out in the darkness, saying: There is no Allah save Thee. Be Thou Glorified! Lo! I have been a wrong-doer.” (21:87) 00:14:39.360 --> 00:14:41.360 'Exalted are You! 00:14:41.360 --> 00:14:43.360 “And (mention) Dhu'n-Nun, when he went off in anger and deemed that We had no power over him, but he cried out in the darkness, saying: There is no Allah save Thee. Be Thou Glorified! Lo! I have been a wrong-doer.” (21:87) 00:14:43.360 --> 00:14:45.360 No Muslim ever calls upon his Lord with it 00:14:45.360 --> 00:14:47.360 in any matter whatsoever, 00:14:47.360 --> 00:14:50.129 but that he is answered." 00:14:50.129 --> 00:14:52.129 Fourth: 00:14:52.129 --> 00:14:54.129 A demonstration of the vastness of Allah Almighty's knowledge, 00:14:54.129 --> 00:14:56.129 His hearing, and the greatness of 00:14:56.129 --> 00:14:58.129 His power; 00:14:58.129 --> 00:15:00.129 for He knew the exact whereabouts of His prophet Yunus, 00:15:00.129 --> 00:15:02.129 peace be upon him, 00:15:02.129 --> 00:15:04.129 and heard his supplication, his glorification, 00:15:04.129 --> 00:15:06.129 and his repentance 00:15:06.129 --> 00:15:08.129 while he was immersed in those three layers of darkness. 00:15:08.129 --> 00:15:10.190 And by His Almighty power, 00:15:10.190 --> 00:15:12.190 He preserved his life 00:15:12.190 --> 00:15:14.190 within that perilous depth, 00:15:14.190 --> 00:15:16.190 and restored to his body 00:15:16.190 --> 00:15:18.190 the vigor of life 00:15:18.190 --> 00:15:20.190 after the intense heat of the whale's belly. 00:15:20.190 --> 00:15:22.190 It also demonstrates 00:15:22.190 --> 00:15:24.190 that the entire universe 00:15:24.190 --> 00:15:26.190 is subservient to Allah Almighty; 00:15:26.190 --> 00:15:28.190 He commands it as He wills, 00:15:28.190 --> 00:15:30.190 just as He commanded the whale 00:15:30.190 --> 00:15:32.190 to swallow Yunus and preserve him, 00:15:32.190 --> 00:15:34.190 and then cast him onto the bare shore 00:15:34.190 --> 00:15:36.990 after that. 00:15:36.990 --> 00:15:38.990 Fifth: 00:15:38.990 --> 00:15:40.990 Hastening to beseech 00:15:40.990 --> 00:15:42.990 Allah in times of affliction, 00:15:42.990 --> 00:15:44.990 and the merit of humbling oneself before Him, 00:15:44.990 --> 00:15:46.990 entreating Him through His oneness, 00:15:46.990 --> 00:15:48.990 affirming His absolute perfection, 00:15:48.990 --> 00:15:50.990 and acknowledging one's sins before Him; 00:15:50.990 --> 00:15:52.990 for these are among the greatest means 00:15:52.990 --> 00:15:54.990 of having prayers answered 00:15:54.990 --> 00:15:57.730 and hardships removed. 00:15:57.730 --> 00:15:59.730 Sixth: 00:15:59.730 --> 00:16:01.730 Scholars have deduced from Yunus's casting of lots 00:16:01.730 --> 00:16:03.730 and his participation in the drawing 00:16:03.730 --> 00:16:05.730 the permissibility of 00:16:05.730 --> 00:16:07.730 casting lots. 00:16:07.730 --> 00:16:09.730 Indeed, our Messenger, 00:16:09.730 --> 00:16:11.730 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:16:11.730 --> 00:16:13.730 whenever he intended to set out on a journey, 00:16:13.730 --> 00:16:15.730 would cast lots among his wives, 00:16:15.730 --> 00:16:17.730 and whichever of them 00:16:17.730 --> 00:16:19.730 had her arrow drawn, 00:16:19.730 --> 00:16:21.730 he would take her along with him. 00:16:21.730 --> 00:16:24.500 Seventh: 00:16:24.500 --> 00:16:26.529 The importance of patience 00:16:26.529 --> 00:16:28.529 in calling people to Allah Almighty, 00:16:28.529 --> 00:16:30.529 and that it is among the means 00:16:30.529 --> 00:16:32.529 of attaining Allah's pleasure. 00:16:32.529 --> 00:16:34.529 A caller's heart may feel constrained 00:16:34.529 --> 00:16:36.529 by the actions of people, 00:16:36.529 --> 00:16:38.529 and his endurance of their rejection may wane, 00:16:38.529 --> 00:16:40.529 yet patience 00:16:40.529 --> 00:16:42.529 and restraint are what befit him 00:16:42.529 --> 00:16:44.529 and his mission, 00:16:44.529 --> 00:16:46.529 belonging to the proper etiquette of dawah 00:16:46.529 --> 00:16:48.529 that allows a good impact to reach 00:16:48.529 --> 00:16:51.299 the hearts of those being called. 00:16:51.299 --> 00:16:53.389 Eighth: 00:16:53.389 --> 00:16:55.389 The virtue of supplication, 00:16:55.389 --> 00:16:57.389 and that it repels the divine decree, 00:16:57.389 --> 00:16:59.389 just as happened with the people of Yunus, 00:16:59.389 --> 00:17:01.389 peace be upon him. 00:17:01.389 --> 00:17:03.389 Our Prophet, 00:17:03.389 --> 00:17:05.390 peace be upon him, said: 00:17:05.390 --> 00:17:07.390 "Nothing repels the divine decree 00:17:07.390 --> 00:17:09.519 except supplication." 00:17:09.519 --> 00:17:12.859 It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi. 00:17:12.859 --> 00:17:14.859 Ninth: 00:17:14.859 --> 00:17:16.859 [The virtue of] gourd or pumpkin 00:17:16.859 --> 00:17:18.859 over other 00:17:18.859 --> 00:17:20.859 types of food. 00:17:20.859 --> 00:17:22.859 It is authentically established that the Messenger of Allah, 00:17:22.859 --> 00:17:24.859 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:17:24.859 --> 00:17:26.859 loved gourd 00:17:26.859 --> 00:17:28.859 and would seek it out from around the edges 00:17:28.859 --> 00:17:31.180 of the dish. 00:17:31.180 --> 00:17:33.180 On the authority of Anas Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him: 00:17:33.180 --> 00:17:35.180 A tailor 00:17:35.180 --> 00:17:37.180 invited the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:17:37.180 --> 00:17:39.180 to a meal he had prepared. 00:17:39.180 --> 00:17:41.309 Anas said: 00:17:41.309 --> 00:17:43.309 "So I went with the Messenger of Allah, 00:17:43.309 --> 00:17:45.309 peace be upon him, 00:17:45.309 --> 00:17:47.309 to that meal. 00:17:47.309 --> 00:17:49.309 There was presented to the Messenger of Allah, 00:17:49.309 --> 00:17:51.309 peace be upon him, 00:17:51.309 --> 00:17:53.309 barley bread 00:17:53.309 --> 00:17:55.309 and soup containing gourd 00:17:55.309 --> 00:17:57.309 and dried meat. 00:17:57.309 --> 00:17:59.309 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, began 00:17:59.309 --> 00:18:01.309 eating of that 00:18:01.309 --> 00:18:03.309 gourd and relishing it." 00:18:03.309 --> 00:18:05.410 Anas said: 00:18:05.410 --> 00:18:07.410 "When I saw that, 00:18:07.410 --> 00:18:09.410 I began to place it before him 00:18:09.410 --> 00:18:11.569 and did not eat it myself." 00:18:11.569 --> 00:18:13.569 Anas said: 00:18:13.569 --> 00:18:15.569 "From that day onward, 00:18:15.569 --> 00:18:17.599 I have always loved gourd;
