WEBVTT 00:00:00.400 --> 00:00:03.399 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:00:15.660 --> 00:00:18.660 Muhammad Ibn Abdulaziz Al-Musa Mosque 00:00:18.660 --> 00:00:19.660 in Al-Badi' 00:00:19.660 --> 00:00:21.660 presents: 00:00:21.660 --> 00:00:24.660 "Misk al-Khitam" 00:00:24.660 --> 00:00:26.660 by Sheikh Usamah Bahr, 00:00:26.660 --> 00:00:28.660 may Allah preserve him. 00:00:30.660 --> 00:00:34.659 A crime of murder— 00:00:34.659 --> 00:00:37.659 yes, it is indeed a murder 00:00:37.659 --> 00:00:43.979 committed by a person without even realizing it. 00:00:43.979 --> 00:00:48.049 It is premeditated murder, 00:00:48.049 --> 00:00:50.049 where the perpetrator is the human being, 00:00:50.049 --> 00:00:53.049 and the victim is time. 00:00:53.049 --> 00:00:56.240 Some kill time by squandering it, 00:00:56.240 --> 00:00:58.240 others kill time by neglecting it, 00:00:58.240 --> 00:01:01.240 and others kill time through procrastination, 00:01:01.240 --> 00:01:03.240 killing time through endless postponement. 00:01:03.240 --> 00:01:07.239 All of these are murders committed against time, 00:01:07.239 --> 00:01:09.239 which is nothing less than man's very lifespan. 00:01:09.239 --> 00:01:11.239 Al-Hasan al-Basri said: 00:01:11.239 --> 00:01:13.239 "O son of Adam! 00:01:13.239 --> 00:01:15.239 You are but a collection of days; 00:01:15.239 --> 00:01:18.239 whenever a day passes, a part of you departs." 00:01:18.239 --> 00:01:19.239 And he said: 00:01:19.239 --> 00:01:20.239 "O son of Adam! 00:01:20.239 --> 00:01:22.239 Your day is your guest, 00:01:22.239 --> 00:01:24.239 so treat it well. 00:01:24.239 --> 00:01:27.239 For if you treat it well, it departs praising you, 00:01:27.239 --> 00:01:30.239 but if you treat it poorly, it departs bearing witness against your sins. 00:01:30.239 --> 00:01:32.239 And the same applies to your night." 00:01:32.239 --> 00:01:33.239 And he said: 00:01:33.239 --> 00:01:36.239 "This worldly life consists of three days: 00:01:36.239 --> 00:01:39.239 as for yesterday, it has departed along with everything done in it; 00:01:39.239 --> 00:01:42.239 as for tomorrow, you may never live to see it; 00:01:42.239 --> 00:01:45.239 but as for today, it belongs to you, so act therein." 00:01:45.239 --> 00:01:48.269 Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 00:01:48.269 --> 00:01:53.269 "I have never regretted anything as much as I regret a day whose sun has set, 00:01:53.269 --> 00:01:55.269 in which my lifespan has diminished, 00:01:55.269 --> 00:01:57.269 yet my good deeds have not increased." 00:01:57.269 --> 00:01:59.269 And Ibn al-Qayyim said: 00:01:59.269 --> 00:02:02.269 "Wasting time is graver than death itself, 00:02:02.269 --> 00:02:04.269 because wasting time 00:02:04.269 --> 00:02:07.269 severs your connection with Allah and the Hereafter, 00:02:07.269 --> 00:02:11.340 whereas death merely severs your connection with this world and its people." 00:02:11.340 --> 00:02:14.340 Killing time occurs through various banes and obstacles, 00:02:14.340 --> 00:02:16.340 and they are many; 00:02:16.340 --> 00:02:18.340 they can virtually consume one's entire lifespan 00:02:18.340 --> 00:02:20.340 if a person does not recognize them 00:02:20.340 --> 00:02:23.370 and strive to be rid of them. 00:02:23.370 --> 00:02:26.370 Among these obstacles and banes is 00:02:26.370 --> 00:02:27.370 heedlessness (ghaflah), 00:02:27.370 --> 00:02:29.370 which is a grave affliction 00:02:29.370 --> 00:02:31.370 that has plagued most Muslims, 00:02:31.370 --> 00:02:35.370 to the point of stripping away their conscious awareness of time. 00:02:35.370 --> 00:02:39.370 The Qur'an has issued the sternest warnings against heedlessness; 00:02:39.370 --> 00:02:41.370 Allah the Exalted said: 00:02:41.370 --> 00:02:49.370 “Already have We urged unto hell many of the jinn and humankind, having hearts wherewith they understand not, and having eyes wherewith they see not, and having ears wherewith they hear not. These are as the cattle - nay, but they are worse! These are the neglectful.” (7:179) 00:03:09.460 --> 00:03:15.870 ﴾It is they who are the truly heedless.﴿ 00:03:15.870 --> 00:03:19.439 Another bane is procrastination, 00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:22.439 a blight that devastates time and murders one's lifespan. 00:03:22.439 --> 00:03:24.439 Unfortunately, 00:03:24.439 --> 00:03:30.439 the word "I will do it later" has become a motto and defining trait for many Muslims. 00:03:30.439 --> 00:03:32.439 Al-Hasan said: 00:03:32.439 --> 00:03:34.439 "Beware of procrastination, 00:03:34.439 --> 00:03:37.439 for you belong to today, not to tomorrow." 00:03:37.439 --> 00:03:39.729 The danger of procrastination lies in the fact 00:03:39.729 --> 00:03:42.729 that you have no guarantee of living until tomorrow; 00:03:42.729 --> 00:03:45.729 and even if your life is extended until tomorrow, 00:03:45.729 --> 00:03:47.729 you cannot be safe from unforeseen impediments— 00:03:47.729 --> 00:03:50.729 such as a sudden illness, an unexpected preoccupation, 00:03:50.729 --> 00:03:52.819 or an impending affliction. 00:03:52.819 --> 00:03:55.819 Know that every day brings its own duty, 00:03:55.819 --> 00:03:57.819 and every moment has its obligations; 00:03:57.819 --> 00:04:01.819 thus, there is no idle time in the life of a Muslim. 00:04:01.819 --> 00:04:04.819 Furthermore, procrastinating in performing acts of obedience 00:04:04.819 --> 00:04:07.819 causes the soul to become accustomed to abandoning them. 00:04:07.819 --> 00:04:12.819 Among the profound traditions urging the investment of time and seizing its opportunities 00:04:12.819 --> 00:04:15.819 is the hadith of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, 00:04:15.819 --> 00:04:16.819 who said: 00:04:16.819 --> 00:04:21.819 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to a man while admonishing him: 00:04:21.819 --> 00:04:24.819 "Take advantage of five things before five others: 00:04:24.819 --> 00:04:26.819 your youth before your old age, 00:04:26.819 --> 00:04:28.819 your health before your sickness, 00:04:28.819 --> 00:04:30.819 your wealth before your poverty, 00:04:30.819 --> 00:04:32.819 your free time before your preoccupation, 00:04:32.819 --> 00:04:35.819 and your life before your death." 00:04:35.819 --> 00:04:39.819 So beware, O Muslim, of this crime of murder, 00:04:39.819 --> 00:04:43.819 and take the initiative to seize the moments of your life in obedience to Allah. 00:04:43.819 --> 00:04:46.819 Beware of procrastination and lethargy, 00:04:46.819 --> 00:04:48.819 and do not be a killer of time; 00:04:48.819 --> 00:04:52.819 rather, cultivate it and bring it to life through diligence and righteous deeds. 00:05:19.560 --> 00:05:25.779 The divine dawn dissolves into the sweetest of feelings, 00:05:25.779 --> 00:05:33.850 bringing darkness, then light, and a revived life thereafter: 00:05:33.850 --> 00:05:41.850 when Allah wills a thing, He merely says to it "Be," and it is.
