00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.399
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

00:00:03.399 --> 00:00:06.860
Treasures of the Seerah.

00:00:06.860 --> 00:00:11.900
The Conversion of Hamzah and 'Umar,

00:00:11.900 --> 00:00:14.500
May Allah be pleased with them both.

00:00:14.500 --> 00:00:21.739
Divine victory came from Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, through the conversion of two men.

00:00:21.739 --> 00:00:23.339
As for the first,

00:00:23.339 --> 00:00:24.739
he was Hamzah,

00:00:24.739 --> 00:00:27.940
the paternal uncle of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),

00:00:27.940 --> 00:00:29.940
and his foster brother,

00:00:29.940 --> 00:00:33.740
for Thuwaybah, the freed slave of Abu Lahab, had breastfed them both.

00:00:34.140 --> 00:00:35.939
The reason for his conversion

00:00:35.939 --> 00:00:38.740
was that Abu Jahl, the enemy of Allah,

00:00:38.740 --> 00:00:41.939
passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:00:41.939 --> 00:00:43.939
while he was near al-Safa,

00:00:43.939 --> 00:00:46.140
and he abused and insulted him,

00:00:46.140 --> 00:00:48.939
while the Messenger of Allah

00:00:48.939 --> 00:00:51.140
remained silent and did not speak to him.

00:00:51.140 --> 00:00:53.140
Then Abu Jahl stood up,

00:00:53.140 --> 00:00:54.539
picked up a stone,

00:00:54.539 --> 00:00:58.539
and struck the Prophet's head with it,

00:00:58.539 --> 00:01:01.740
fracturing his skull so severely that blood poured forth.

00:01:02.140 --> 00:01:04.939
He then walked away to the assembly of Quraysh

00:01:04.939 --> 00:01:06.939
and sat with them.

00:01:06.939 --> 00:01:11.340
A freed bondwoman belonging to 'Abdullah ibn Jud'an had witnessed that.

00:01:11.340 --> 00:01:15.739
So when Hamzah returned from hunting, carrying his bow slung over his shoulder,

00:01:15.739 --> 00:01:17.540
this bondwoman approached him

00:01:17.540 --> 00:01:19.540
and told him what she had seen,

00:01:19.540 --> 00:01:21.340
and what Abu Jahl had done

00:01:21.340 --> 00:01:24.739
to the Prophet (peace be upon him).

00:01:24.739 --> 00:01:27.340
Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was filled with rage;

00:01:27.340 --> 00:01:29.340
he was a formidable man,

00:01:29.340 --> 00:01:31.540
in the prime of his youth,

00:01:31.540 --> 00:01:34.939
and among the bravest of Quraysh at that time,

00:01:34.939 --> 00:01:37.500
and Muhammad was his nephew.

00:01:37.500 --> 00:01:39.099
So he set out swiftly

00:01:39.099 --> 00:01:41.700
until he reached Abu Jahl.

00:01:41.700 --> 00:01:43.299
Upon entering,

00:01:43.299 --> 00:01:46.099
he stood towering over his head and said to him:

00:01:46.099 --> 00:01:49.299
"Do you dare revile my nephew when I follow his religion?!"

00:01:49.299 --> 00:01:52.299
He then cursed him and struck him with his bow,

00:01:52.299 --> 00:01:55.739
inflicting a terrible, hideous gash on his face.

00:01:55.739 --> 00:01:59.939
Men from the Banu Makhzum—Abu Jahl’s clan—rose in anger,

00:01:59.939 --> 00:02:03.340
and men from Banu Hashim rose in defense of Hamzah,

00:02:03.340 --> 00:02:05.140
until it was on the verge of turning into

00:02:05.140 --> 00:02:07.540
an all-out battle between the two clans.

00:02:07.540 --> 00:02:09.340
But Abu Jahl intervened, saying:

00:02:09.340 --> 00:02:11.139
"Leave Abu 'Umarah alone,

00:02:11.139 --> 00:02:13.139
for indeed, I reviled his nephew

00:02:13.139 --> 00:02:15.430
most abhorrently."

00:02:15.430 --> 00:02:17.830
Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) recounted:

00:02:17.830 --> 00:02:19.229
"When I left,

00:02:19.229 --> 00:02:21.030
I began to reflect upon the matter,

00:02:21.030 --> 00:02:22.229
and I said to myself:

00:02:22.229 --> 00:02:24.430
'How could I say, "I follow his religion,"

00:02:24.430 --> 00:02:27.030
when I have not yet embraced Islam?!'"

00:02:27.030 --> 00:02:29.229
But it was not long before Allah,

00:02:29.229 --> 00:02:33.030
the Blessed and Exalted, opened his heart to Islam.

00:02:33.030 --> 00:02:36.030
So he went to the Prophet (peace be upon him)

00:02:36.030 --> 00:02:37.229
and said:

00:02:37.229 --> 00:02:38.629
"O son of my brother,

00:02:38.629 --> 00:02:41.030
I have said such-and-such,

00:02:41.030 --> 00:02:43.229
so what should I do?"

00:02:43.229 --> 00:02:46.229
Thereupon, the Prophet prayed for him

00:02:46.229 --> 00:02:49.430
that Allah would open his heart to Islam,

00:02:49.430 --> 00:02:53.430
and Allah, Exalted and Majestic, expanded his chest, and he embraced Islam.

00:02:53.430 --> 00:02:57.330
His conversion was a great victory for the believers.

00:02:57.330 --> 00:02:58.930
The second victory

00:02:58.930 --> 00:03:01.360
was 'Umar ibn al-Khattab.

00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:04.360
For it has been authentically established

00:03:04.360 --> 00:03:06.960
that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:08.960
"O Allah, strengthen Islam

00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:11.960
with whichever of these two men is more beloved to You:

00:03:11.960 --> 00:03:15.759
with Abu Jahl or with 'Umar ibn al-Khattab."

00:03:15.759 --> 00:03:19.219
And the more beloved of the two to Him was 'Umar.

00:03:19.219 --> 00:03:23.020
There are multiple narrations regarding the story of his conversion,

00:03:23.020 --> 00:03:26.219
but the one closest to authenticity

00:03:26.219 --> 00:03:29.419
is that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

00:03:29.419 --> 00:03:33.419
"I went out to intercept the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:03:33.419 --> 00:03:35.219
before I embraced Islam,

00:03:35.219 --> 00:03:38.620
and I found that he had preceded me to the mosque.

00:03:38.620 --> 00:03:40.219
So I stood behind him,

00:03:40.219 --> 00:03:42.819
and he began reciting Surah al-Haqqah.

00:03:42.819 --> 00:03:46.620
The Prophet went on reciting,

00:03:46.620 --> 00:03:50.219
and I listened, captivated by its exquisite composition.

00:03:50.219 --> 00:03:52.219
I said to myself:

00:03:52.219 --> 00:03:56.020
'By Allah, he is a poet, just as Quraysh say!'

00:03:56.020 --> 00:03:58.819
Then he recited:

00:03:58.819 --> 00:04:04.620
'That this is indeed the word of an honored messenger,

00:04:04.620 --> 00:04:07.620
“It is not poet's speech - little is it that ye believe!” (69:41)

00:04:07.620 --> 00:04:11.819
Little do you believe!'

00:04:11.819 --> 00:04:14.419
Then I said to myself: 'A soothsayer!'

00:04:14.419 --> 00:04:15.419
Whereupon he recited:

00:04:15.419 --> 00:04:17.819
'Nor is it the word of a soothsayer;

00:04:17.819 --> 00:04:22.019
Little do you take heed!

00:04:22.019 --> 00:04:28.180
It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.'

00:04:28.180 --> 00:04:31.240
At that moment, Islam penetrated my heart."

00:04:31.240 --> 00:04:33.240
When 'Umar embraced Islam,

00:04:33.240 --> 00:04:37.439
he approached a man known as Jamil ibn Ma'mar,

00:04:37.439 --> 00:04:40.040
who was notorious for spreading talk,

00:04:40.040 --> 00:04:42.040
unable to keep any secret.

00:04:42.040 --> 00:04:43.439
'Umar said to him:

00:04:43.439 --> 00:04:46.040
"I wish to tell you something."

00:04:46.040 --> 00:04:47.839
He asked: "And what is that?"

00:04:47.839 --> 00:04:49.240
'Umar replied:

00:04:49.240 --> 00:04:50.740
"I have embraced Islam."

00:04:50.740 --> 00:04:52.339
The man immediately jumped up

00:04:52.339 --> 00:04:54.339
and shouted at the top of his voice:

00:04:54.339 --> 00:04:59.939
"Ibn al-Khattab has apostatized!"

00:04:59.939 --> 00:05:03.339
while 'Umar ibn al-Khattab was chasing behind him, saying:

00:05:03.339 --> 00:05:04.139
"He lies!

00:05:04.139 --> 00:05:06.569
Rather, I have embraced Islam!"

00:05:06.569 --> 00:05:09.569
The people rushed at 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him),

00:05:09.569 --> 00:05:12.769
beating him while he fought back against them,

00:05:12.769 --> 00:05:15.970
and this continued until the sun rose high in the sky.

00:05:15.970 --> 00:05:18.370
Some narrations even mention

00:05:18.370 --> 00:05:24.259
that they beat him until he fell unconscious from the severity of their blows.

00:05:24.259 --> 00:05:28.259
On the authority of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

00:05:28.259 --> 00:05:31.860
"We were never able to pray at the Ka'bah

00:05:31.860 --> 00:05:34.060
until 'Umar embraced Islam."

00:05:34.060 --> 00:05:35.259
He also said:

00:05:35.259 --> 00:05:39.740
"We have never ceased to enjoy honor and dignity ever since 'Umar embraced Islam."

00:05:39.740 --> 00:05:45.509
Treasures of the Seerah:

00:05:45.509 --> 00:05:49.680
The Testimony of Enemies.

00:05:49.879 --> 00:05:52.879
Al-Akhnas ibn Shariq went to visit Abu Jahl

00:05:52.879 --> 00:05:54.279
and said to him:

00:05:54.279 --> 00:05:56.879
"I am going to ask you something, so be truthful with me,

00:05:56.879 --> 00:05:59.879
for there is no one here to overhear us."

00:05:59.879 --> 00:06:00.680
Abu Jahl replied:

00:06:00.680 --> 00:06:02.910
"Ask whatever you wish."

00:06:02.910 --> 00:06:04.110
He asked:

00:06:04.110 --> 00:06:07.509
"Is Muhammad truthful, or is he a liar?"

00:06:07.509 --> 00:06:08.910
Abu Jahl said:

00:06:08.910 --> 00:06:10.110
"Woe to you!

00:06:10.110 --> 00:06:12.910
By Allah, Muhammad is indeed truthful,

00:06:12.910 --> 00:06:15.839
and Muhammad has never lied in his entire life!

00:06:15.839 --> 00:06:21.240
But if Banu Qusayy claim both the providing of water, the feeding of pilgrims, and now prophethood,

00:06:21.240 --> 00:06:24.040
what then remains for the rest of Quraysh?

00:06:24.040 --> 00:06:28.040
We and the clan of Banu 'Abd Manaf have always rivaled one another for nobility:

00:06:28.040 --> 00:06:30.040
they fed others, so we fed others;

00:06:30.040 --> 00:06:32.040
they gave generously, so we gave generously;

00:06:32.040 --> 00:06:34.240
they bore debts and burdens, so we bore debts and burdens;

00:06:34.240 --> 00:06:37.240
until, when our knees met side by side

00:06:37.240 --> 00:06:39.639
and we ran neck and neck like racehorses,

00:06:39.639 --> 00:06:41.639
they declared: 'A prophet has arisen from among us!'

00:06:41.639 --> 00:06:44.040
How could we ever match that?!

00:06:44.040 --> 00:06:47.639
No, by Allah, we will never believe in him!"

00:06:47.639 --> 00:06:49.639
It is truly as the saying goes:

00:06:49.639 --> 00:06:53.949
"True pride is that to which even enemies bear witness."

00:06:53.949 --> 00:06:59.220
Treasures of the Seerah:

00:06:59.220 --> 00:07:07.939
'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah Attempts to Negotiate with the Prophet.

00:07:07.939 --> 00:07:11.540
'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah was sitting in the assembly of Quraysh,

00:07:11.540 --> 00:07:16.139
while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was sitting alone in the mosque.

00:07:16.139 --> 00:07:17.740
'Utbah said:

00:07:17.740 --> 00:07:19.740
"O assembly of Quraysh!

00:07:19.740 --> 00:07:22.740
Shall I not go to Muhammad and speak with him,

00:07:22.740 --> 00:07:26.740
presenting certain offers to him so that he might accept some of them,

00:07:26.740 --> 00:07:30.740
so that we may give him whatever he desires, and he will cease bothering us?"

00:07:30.740 --> 00:07:31.740
They replied:

00:07:31.740 --> 00:07:33.740
"Certainly, O Abu al-Walid!

00:07:33.740 --> 00:07:35.740
Go to him and speak with him."

00:07:35.740 --> 00:07:37.779
So 'Utbah rose and went to him,

00:07:37.779 --> 00:07:39.779
sat down beside him, and said:

00:07:39.779 --> 00:07:41.779
"O son of my brother,

00:07:41.779 --> 00:07:44.779
you know well the esteemed standing you hold among us,

00:07:44.779 --> 00:07:47.779
yet you have brought a momentous, divisive matter to your people:

00:07:47.779 --> 00:07:50.779
with it, you have shattered their unity,

00:07:50.779 --> 00:07:52.779
insulted their intellect,

00:07:52.779 --> 00:07:55.779
disparaged their deities and their religion,

00:07:55.779 --> 00:07:58.779
and declared their deceased ancestors to be disbelievers.

00:07:58.779 --> 00:08:02.779
So listen to me while I present some proposals to you;

00:08:02.779 --> 00:08:06.779
consider them, so that you may perhaps accept some of them."

00:08:06.779 --> 00:08:09.779
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

00:08:09.779 --> 00:08:11.779
"O Abu al-Walid,

00:08:11.779 --> 00:08:13.779
speak, and I will listen."

00:08:13.779 --> 00:08:14.779
He said:

00:08:14.779 --> 00:08:16.779
"O son of my brother,

00:08:16.779 --> 00:08:21.779
if what you seek by this enterprise is wealth,

00:08:21.779 --> 00:08:23.779
we will gather so much of our wealth for you

00:08:23.779 --> 00:08:26.779
that you will become the wealthiest among us.

00:08:26.779 --> 00:08:28.779
If you seek prestige and nobility,

00:08:28.779 --> 00:08:32.779
we will make you our chieftain, deciding no matter without your consent.

00:08:32.779 --> 00:08:35.779
If you seek royal dominion,

00:08:35.779 --> 00:08:37.779
we will crown you king over us.

00:08:37.779 --> 00:08:40.779
And if what comes to you is a spirit possession or vision that you perceive,

00:08:40.779 --> 00:08:43.779
which you cannot repel from yourself,

00:08:43.779 --> 00:08:45.779
we will seek medical treatment for you

00:08:45.779 --> 00:08:49.779
and spend our fortunes until we have you cured;

00:08:49.779 --> 00:08:54.779
for sometimes a spirit overpowers a person until he is treated."

00:08:54.779 --> 00:09:00.779
He continued speaking while the Prophet remained silently listening.

00:09:00.779 --> 00:09:02.779
When he finished,

00:09:02.779 --> 00:09:05.779
the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked him:

00:09:05.779 --> 00:09:08.779
"Have you finished, O Abu al-Walid?"

00:09:08.779 --> 00:09:10.779
He said: "Yes."

00:09:10.779 --> 00:09:13.779
He said: "Then listen to me."

00:09:13.779 --> 00:09:15.779
He said: "I will."

00:09:15.779 --> 00:09:19.779
Then the Prophet recited:

00:09:19.779 --> 00:09:24.250
"Ha, Meem.

00:09:24.250 --> 00:09:29.250
“A revelation from the Beneficent, the Merciful,” (41:2)

00:09:29.250 --> 00:09:38.470
“A Scripture whereof the verses are expounded, a Lecture in Arabic for people who have knowledge,” (41:3)

00:09:38.470 --> 00:09:41.470
A bringer of good tidings and a warner...

00:09:41.470 --> 00:09:46.470
“Good tidings and a warning. But most of them turn away so that they hear not.” (41:4)

00:09:46.470 --> 00:09:57.700
“And they say: Our hearts are protected from that unto which thou (O Muhammad) callest us, and in our ears there is a deafness, and between us and thee there is a veil. Act, then. Lo! we also shall be acting.” (41:5)

00:09:57.700 --> 00:10:04.700
“And they say: Our hearts are protected from that unto which thou (O Muhammad) callest us, and in our ears there is a deafness, and between us and thee there is a veil. Act, then. Lo! we also shall be acting.” (41:5)

00:10:04.700 --> 00:10:09.700
So work; indeed, we are working."

00:10:09.700 --> 00:10:14.169
When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, reached

00:10:14.169 --> 00:10:18.169
the place of prostration in Surah Fussilat,

00:10:18.169 --> 00:10:32.460
“But if they are too proud - still those who are with thy Lord glorify Him night and day, and tire not.” (41:38)

00:10:32.460 --> 00:10:35.460
"and they do not grow weary,"

00:10:35.460 --> 00:10:39.000
he prostrated, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:42.000
Then he raised his head and said,

00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:45.000
"You have heard, O Abu al-Walid, what you have heard."

00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:47.159
"So, it is up to you."

00:10:47.159 --> 00:10:52.159
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, never spoke any human speech thereafter,

00:10:52.159 --> 00:10:57.159
but rather recited to him the words of the Lord of all mankind, glory be to Him and Exalted.

00:10:57.159 --> 00:10:59.159
In some narrations,

00:10:59.159 --> 00:11:03.159
it is mentioned that when the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, reached [that point],

00:11:03.159 --> 00:11:12.159
“But if they turn away, then say: I warn you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt (which fell of old upon the tribes) of A'ad and Thamud;” (41:13)

00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:17.159
'Utbah stood up and placed his hand over the mouth of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:11:17.159 --> 00:11:21.159
and said, "I adjure you by Allah and by our kinship!"

00:11:21.159 --> 00:11:23.159
Meaning: "Do not do this."

00:11:23.159 --> 00:11:27.159
"Do not call upon Allah against us to send down a thunderbolt upon us."

00:11:27.159 --> 00:11:30.159
Then 'Utbah went to his companions,

00:11:30.159 --> 00:11:34.159
and they said to one another as they saw him approaching,

00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:40.159
"We swear by Allah, Abu al-Walid has returned to you with a face different from the one he left with."

00:11:40.159 --> 00:11:43.159
When he sat with them, they asked,

00:11:43.159 --> 00:11:45.159
"What news do you bring, O Abu al-Walid?"

00:11:45.159 --> 00:11:46.159
He said,

00:11:46.159 --> 00:11:51.289
"I have heard speech, and by Allah, I have never heard anything like it before."

00:11:51.289 --> 00:11:56.289
"By Allah, it is neither poetry, nor sorcery, nor divination."

00:11:56.289 --> 00:11:58.289
"O assembly of Quraysh,"

00:11:58.289 --> 00:12:01.289
"obey me and follow my advice in this matter,"

00:12:01.289 --> 00:12:04.289
"and leave this man alone to his affairs."

00:12:04.289 --> 00:12:06.289
"Stay away from him."

00:12:06.289 --> 00:12:11.289
"For by Allah, this speech I have heard from him will have a momentous outcome."

00:12:11.289 --> 00:12:13.289
"If the Arabs overcome him,"

00:12:13.289 --> 00:12:16.289
"then you have been spared by others."

00:12:16.289 --> 00:12:18.289
"But if he prevails over the Arabs,"

00:12:18.289 --> 00:12:20.289
"then his kingdom is your kingdom,"

00:12:20.289 --> 00:12:22.289
"and his honor is your honor,"

00:12:22.289 --> 00:12:24.289
"and you will be the happiest of people because of him."

00:12:24.289 --> 00:12:26.350
They replied,

00:12:26.350 --> 00:12:30.350
"By Allah, O Abu al-Walid, he has bewitched you with his tongue."

00:12:30.350 --> 00:12:31.350
He said,

00:12:31.350 --> 00:12:35.929
"This is my opinion; do as you see fit."

00:12:35.929 --> 00:12:42.409
Treasures of the Prophetic biography (Seerah)

00:12:42.409 --> 00:12:44.409
The Boycott

00:12:44.409 --> 00:12:52.100
After 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah left the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:12:52.100 --> 00:12:54.100
and said what he said,

00:12:54.100 --> 00:13:00.100
Quraysh saw that there must be a solution to this problem they were facing.

00:13:00.100 --> 00:13:04.100
They decided upon a total boycott of the Banu Hashim.

00:13:04.100 --> 00:13:08.100
They gathered and formed an alliance against the Banu Hashim,

00:13:08.100 --> 00:13:09.100
and agreed

00:13:09.100 --> 00:13:11.100
not to intermarry with them,

00:13:11.100 --> 00:13:13.100
not to trade with them,

00:13:13.100 --> 00:13:15.100
not to sit with them,

00:13:15.100 --> 00:13:17.139
and not to speak to them.

00:13:17.139 --> 00:13:22.139
They wrote a document containing covenants and pledges

00:13:22.139 --> 00:13:26.139
that they would never accept any reconciliation from the Banu Hashim,

00:13:26.139 --> 00:13:28.139
and that no pity would move them,

00:13:28.139 --> 00:13:34.139
until they handed over the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, for them to kill him.

00:13:34.139 --> 00:13:36.139
This pact was finalized,

00:13:36.139 --> 00:13:39.139
and the document was hung inside the Ka'bah.

00:13:39.139 --> 00:13:44.139
The Muslims and the Banu Hashim—both the believers and the disbelievers among them—withdrew,

00:13:44.139 --> 00:13:48.139
as did the Banu al-Muttalib—both the believers and the disbelievers among them—

00:13:48.139 --> 00:13:51.139
to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:13:51.139 --> 00:13:53.139
except for Abu Lahab,

00:13:53.139 --> 00:13:55.139
the uncle of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:13:55.139 --> 00:13:57.139
and some of the Banu al-Muttalib.

00:13:57.139 --> 00:14:05.139
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and those with him went out to a valley known as the Shi'b of Abu Talib.

00:14:05.139 --> 00:14:09.139
This boycott lasted for three years.

00:14:09.139 --> 00:14:14.139
The siege intensified upon the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and those with him,

00:14:14.139 --> 00:14:16.139
until they suffered great hardship,

00:14:16.139 --> 00:14:20.139
and were driven to eating leaves and leather.

00:14:20.139 --> 00:14:23.139
The strange thing about this boycott is

00:14:23.139 --> 00:14:27.139
that the disbelievers of the Banu Hashim and the disbelievers of the Banu al-Muttalib

00:14:27.139 --> 00:14:30.139
went out with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:14:30.139 --> 00:14:37.139
This shows us that tribal loyalty among the Arabs was strong and influential.

00:14:37.139 --> 00:14:39.139
If someone were to ask,

00:14:39.139 --> 00:14:43.139
"The Banu Hashim went out with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:14:43.139 --> 00:14:46.139
because they are his cousins,"

00:14:46.139 --> 00:14:48.139
"then what about the Banu al-Muttalib?"

00:14:48.139 --> 00:14:52.139
"And why did the Banu 'Abd Shams and the Banu Nawfal not go out?"

00:14:52.139 --> 00:14:56.139
"Even though 'Abd Shams, Nawfal, Hashim, and al-Muttalib"

00:14:56.139 --> 00:14:59.139
"were all brothers,"

00:14:59.139 --> 00:15:01.139
"their father being 'Abd Manaf."

00:15:01.139 --> 00:15:05.139
The answer is that the bond between the Banu al-Muttalib and the Banu Hashim

00:15:05.139 --> 00:15:13.139
was stronger than the bond between the Banu Hashim and the Banu 'Abd Shams or the Banu Nawfal,

00:15:13.139 --> 00:15:18.139
and likewise stronger than the bond between the Banu al-Muttalib and 'Abd Shams or Nawfal.

00:15:18.139 --> 00:15:20.139
This was a long-standing relationship.

00:15:20.139 --> 00:15:23.139
For Jubayr ibn Mut'im said:

00:15:23.139 --> 00:15:25.139
"On the day of Khaybar,"

00:15:25.139 --> 00:15:32.139
"the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, allocated the share of the near of kin to the Banu Hashim and the Banu al-Muttalib,"

00:15:32.139 --> 00:15:35.139
"and left out the Banu Nawfal and the Banu 'Abd Shams."

00:15:35.139 --> 00:15:41.139
"So 'Uthman ibn 'Affan and I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,"

00:15:41.139 --> 00:15:44.139
"and said, 'O Messenger of Allah,'"

00:15:44.139 --> 00:15:46.139
"'these are the Banu Hashim,'"

00:15:46.139 --> 00:15:51.139
"'we do not deny their merit due to the position Allah has placed you among them,'"

00:15:51.139 --> 00:15:54.139
"'but what of our brothers from the Banu al-Muttalib?'"

00:15:54.139 --> 00:15:58.139
"'You gave to them and left us out, even though our kinship is the same.'"

00:15:58.139 --> 00:16:01.169
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, replied,

00:16:01.169 --> 00:16:06.169
"'We have never been separated, neither in the Jahiliyyah nor in Islam.'"

00:16:06.169 --> 00:16:09.169
"'We and they are one and the same.'"

00:16:09.169 --> 00:16:13.169
And he interlaced his fingers, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:16:13.169 --> 00:16:17.330
The Arabs in the Jahiliyyah before Islam,

00:16:17.330 --> 00:16:21.330
and even before the birth of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:16:21.330 --> 00:16:25.330
used to call Hashim and al-Muttalib 'the two full moons.'

00:16:25.330 --> 00:16:30.330
And they called 'Abd Shams and Nawfal 'the two bright ones.'

00:16:30.330 --> 00:16:34.360
During these three years, Abu Talib

00:16:34.360 --> 00:16:39.360
feared for the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, that he might be assassinated.

00:16:39.360 --> 00:16:42.360
So the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:16:42.360 --> 00:16:44.360
whenever he wanted to sleep,

00:16:44.360 --> 00:16:47.360
Abu Talib would let him sleep for a while,

00:16:47.360 --> 00:16:49.360
then wake him up and change his place,

00:16:49.360 --> 00:16:52.360
so that someone else would sleep in his spot.
