A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Muhajirun (Emigrant) Companions.
I am from the Banu Kalb, one of the Arab tribes.
When I was a boy of eight years old,
I went out with my mother to visit my maternal uncles.
While we were on our way near her people,
A cavalry raid by the Banu al-Qayn fell upon us.
They took our wealth and drove away our camels.
They took the women and children captive.
And they took me captive with them.
Then they sold me in the market of 'Ukaz.
Hakim ibn Hizam bought me for four hundred dirhams.
Then he gifted me to his aunt, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, may Allah be pleased with her.
When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, married her,
She gifted me to him.
So I began to serve him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
Then time passed.
Some people from my tribe went on Hajj.
They saw me in Makkah.
I recognized them, and they recognized me.
They returned and informed my father of my whereabouts.
My father and my uncle set out to ransom me.
They met with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
They offered him whatever ransom he wished.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to them,
"Would you like something better than the ransom?"
They asked, "And what is that?"
He said, "We shall give him the choice."
"If he chooses you, then he is yours without any payment."
"And if he chooses me,"
"Then by Allah, I am not one to turn away someone who chooses me."
They said,
"You have been fair and have gone beyond fairness."
Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, called me,
And said to me,
"You know who I am,"
"And you have seen my companionship with you."
"These are your father and your uncle."
"So choose me or choose them."
I said,
"I am not one to choose anyone over you."
"You are to me in the place of a father and a mother."
My father and uncle were astonished and said,
"Woe to you!"
"Do you choose slavery over freedom?"
"And do you choose him over your father, your uncle, and your family?"
I said, "Yes."
"I have seen something in this man,"
"That I would never choose anyone over him."
When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw that from me,
He took me out to the Hijr (near the Ka'bah).
And he called out to the people, saying,
"O those who are present!"
"Bear witness that this is my son,"
"I shall inherit from him, and he shall inherit from me."
When my father and uncle saw that,
They were reassured and departed.
So I began to be called the son of Muhammad.
Until Islam came and prohibited adoption.
And the word of Allah the Exalted was revealed:
"Call them by [the names of] their fathers."
So I began to be called by my father's name thereafter.
