00:00:16.140 --> 00:00:20.899 I am one of the Muhajirun (Emigrant) Companions. 00:00:20.899 --> 00:00:24.899 I am from the Banu Kalb, one of the Arab tribes. 00:00:24.899 --> 00:00:29.059 When I was a boy of eight years old, 00:00:29.059 --> 00:00:32.060 I went out with my mother to visit my maternal uncles. 00:00:32.060 --> 00:00:36.060 While we were on our way near her people, 00:00:36.060 --> 00:00:40.060 A cavalry raid by the Banu al-Qayn fell upon us. 00:00:40.060 --> 00:00:43.060 They took our wealth and drove away our camels. 00:00:43.060 --> 00:00:45.060 They took the women and children captive. 00:00:45.060 --> 00:00:48.060 And they took me captive with them. 00:00:48.060 --> 00:00:51.060 Then they sold me in the market of 'Ukaz. 00:00:51.060 --> 00:00:55.060 Hakim ibn Hizam bought me for four hundred dirhams. 00:00:55.060 --> 00:01:01.060 Then he gifted me to his aunt, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, may Allah be pleased with her. 00:01:01.060 --> 00:01:05.159 When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, married her, 00:01:05.159 --> 00:01:07.159 She gifted me to him. 00:01:07.159 --> 00:01:11.159 So I began to serve him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:01:11.159 --> 00:01:15.219 Then time passed. 00:01:15.219 --> 00:01:17.219 Some people from my tribe went on Hajj. 00:01:17.219 --> 00:01:19.219 They saw me in Makkah. 00:01:19.219 --> 00:01:21.219 I recognized them, and they recognized me. 00:01:21.219 --> 00:01:25.219 They returned and informed my father of my whereabouts. 00:01:25.219 --> 00:01:28.219 My father and my uncle set out to ransom me. 00:01:28.219 --> 00:01:32.219 They met with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:01:32.219 --> 00:01:36.250 They offered him whatever ransom he wished. 00:01:36.250 --> 00:01:39.250 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to them, 00:01:39.250 --> 00:01:43.250 "Would you like something better than the ransom?" 00:01:43.250 --> 00:01:45.250 They asked, "And what is that?" 00:01:45.250 --> 00:01:47.250 He said, "We shall give him the choice." 00:01:47.250 --> 00:01:51.250 "If he chooses you, then he is yours without any payment." 00:01:51.250 --> 00:01:53.250 "And if he chooses me," 00:01:53.250 --> 00:01:57.250 "Then by Allah, I am not one to turn away someone who chooses me." 00:01:57.250 --> 00:01:59.250 They said, 00:01:59.250 --> 00:02:02.250 "You have been fair and have gone beyond fairness." 00:02:02.250 --> 00:02:06.409 Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, called me, 00:02:06.409 --> 00:02:07.409 And said to me, 00:02:07.409 --> 00:02:09.409 "You know who I am," 00:02:09.409 --> 00:02:11.409 "And you have seen my companionship with you." 00:02:11.409 --> 00:02:14.439 "These are your father and your uncle." 00:02:14.439 --> 00:02:17.439 "So choose me or choose them." 00:02:17.439 --> 00:02:18.469 I said, 00:02:18.469 --> 00:02:22.469 "I am not one to choose anyone over you." 00:02:22.469 --> 00:02:26.469 "You are to me in the place of a father and a mother." 00:02:26.469 --> 00:02:29.539 My father and uncle were astonished and said, 00:02:29.539 --> 00:02:30.539 "Woe to you!" 00:02:30.539 --> 00:02:34.539 "Do you choose slavery over freedom?" 00:02:34.539 --> 00:02:38.539 "And do you choose him over your father, your uncle, and your family?" 00:02:38.539 --> 00:02:40.539 I said, "Yes." 00:02:40.539 --> 00:02:43.539 "I have seen something in this man," 00:02:43.539 --> 00:02:48.759 "That I would never choose anyone over him." 00:02:48.759 --> 00:02:52.759 When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw that from me, 00:02:52.759 --> 00:02:54.759 He took me out to the Hijr (near the Ka'bah). 00:02:54.759 --> 00:02:57.759 And he called out to the people, saying, 00:02:57.759 --> 00:02:59.759 "O those who are present!" 00:02:59.759 --> 00:03:02.759 "Bear witness that this is my son," 00:03:02.759 --> 00:03:04.759 "I shall inherit from him, and he shall inherit from me." 00:03:04.759 --> 00:03:07.949 When my father and uncle saw that, 00:03:07.949 --> 00:03:11.020 They were reassured and departed. 00:03:11.020 --> 00:03:14.020 So I began to be called the son of Muhammad. 00:03:14.020 --> 00:03:18.020 Until Islam came and prohibited adoption. 00:03:18.020 --> 00:03:20.020 And the word of Allah the Exalted was revealed: 00:03:20.020 --> 00:03:23.020 "Call them by [the names of] their fathers." 00:03:23.020 --> 00:03:27.020 So I began to be called by my father's name thereafter. 00:03:27.020 --> 00:03:29.240 So, who am I?
