A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari.
Abridged by Dr. Aqil ibn Salim al-Shammar.
Surah al-'Adiyat.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
By the galloping horses, panting.
And the producers of sparks by striking.
And the chargers at dawn.
And stirring up dust thereby.
And penetrating into the midst of the gathering thereby.
Indeed, mankind is ungrateful to his Lord.
“And lo! he is a witness unto that;” (100:7)
“And lo! in the love of wealth he is violent.” (100:8)
Our Lord, the Exalted, swears by the galloping horses, panting.
These are the horses that run while making a neighing sound.
He swears by the producers of sparks, which strike fire.
Horses produce fire with their hooves.
People produce fire with flint and steel.
The tongue, for instance, produces sparks through speech.
Men, for instance, produce sparks through cunning.
And likewise, horses.
They stir up war among their riders when they meet in battle.
Allah has not provided any indication that a specific instance is intended to the exclusion of others.
Therefore, everything that produces fire by striking.
Is included in what He has sworn by.
Due to the generality of the literal meaning.
And He swears by the chargers at dawn.
He did not specify one charging group to the exclusion of another.
So every group that charges at dawn.
Is included in what He has sworn by.
Regarding His saying, "And stirring up dust thereby."
They raised dust in the valley.
And they penetrated with their riders into the midst of the enemy gathering.
Indeed, man is ungrateful for the blessings of his Lord.
Indeed, Allah is a witness to his Lord's ingratitude.
And indeed, man is intense in his love for wealth.
“Knoweth he not that, when the contents of the graves are poured forth” (100:9)
And what is in the breasts is laid bare.
“On that day will their Lord be perfectly informed concerning them.” (100:11)
Does this man, who possesses these characteristics, not know?
When that which is in the graves is scattered.
And that which is in them of the dead is brought out and searched.
And distinguished and made manifest.
And what is in the hearts of people, of good and evil, is brought to light.
Indeed, their Lord, regarding their deeds.
And what they concealed in their hearts and kept hidden therein.
And what they made manifest through their limbs of those deeds.
Is All-Knowing; nothing of it is hidden from Him.
And He will recompense them for all of that on that Day.
