peer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:00:57.009 --> 00:01:01.009 back when they were two boys growing up in the mountain passes of Makkah. 00:01:01.009 --> 00:01:03.009 He was also his foster brother, 00:01:03.009 --> 00:01:06.010 as they were both nourished by the same breast. 00:01:06.010 --> 00:01:10.010 He was connected to him by the strongest bonds of kinship. 00:01:10.010 --> 00:01:13.010 That is Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, 00:01:13.010 --> 00:01:17.010 the uncle of the Great Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:01:17.010 --> 00:01:20.010 and the master of the martyrs of the Ummah. 00:01:20.010 --> 00:01:26.010 Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, at the time the Noble Messenger—upon him be the best of prayers and purest of salutations—was called to prophethood, 00:01:26.010 --> 00:01:29.010 had just passed his fortieth year. 00:01:29.010 --> 00:01:34.010 He was, at that time, a master among the prominent masters of Quraysh, 00:01:34.010 --> 00:01:37.010 and a formidable leader among their elite. 00:01:37.010 --> 00:01:40.010 Makkah held him in high regard, 00:01:40.010 --> 00:01:45.010 and its people held for him a love mingled with reverence and esteem. 00:01:45.010 --> 00:01:52.010 Despite the close bond between him and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:01:52.010 --> 00:01:55.010 he did not pay much attention to his call, 00:01:55.010 --> 00:02:01.010 and he did not embrace Islam when the Messenger, peace be upon him, warned his closest kin. 00:02:01.010 --> 00:02:04.010 The Hashimite knight was a man of the hunt, 00:02:04.010 --> 00:02:07.010 finding in it his greatest pleasure, 00:02:07.010 --> 00:02:12.009 and exhausting his vibrant, surging energies in its pursuit. 00:02:12.009 --> 00:02:16.199 One day, while he was returning from his hunt, 00:02:16.199 --> 00:02:19.199 with his bow slung over his shoulder and his spear in hand, 00:02:19.199 --> 00:02:22.199 walking with a gait of pride and arrogance, 00:02:22.199 --> 00:02:25.199 a bondwoman of Abd Allah ibn Jud'an intercepted him 00:02:25.199 --> 00:02:27.199 and said to him, 00:02:27.199 --> 00:02:34.199 "If you, O Abu 'Umarah, had heard what I heard of Abu al-Hakam’s insults toward your nephew Muhammad, 00:02:34.199 --> 00:02:37.199 and had seen what I saw of his assault upon him, 00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:40.199 you would have a different perspective today." 00:02:40.199 --> 00:02:43.199 No sooner had her words touched his ears 00:02:43.199 --> 00:02:48.199 than he was consumed with rage, his chest heaving with indignation. they rose up against Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, 00:03:40.389 --> 00:03:42.389 wanting to harm him. 00:03:42.389 --> 00:03:44.389 But Abu Jahl 00:03:44.389 --> 00:03:47.389 said to them, "Leave Abu 'Umarah alone, 00:03:47.389 --> 00:03:50.389 for I have indeed insulted his nephew, 00:03:50.389 --> 00:03:54.460 when I reviled and cursed him before a crowd of people." 00:03:54.460 --> 00:03:56.460 In the blink of an eye, 00:03:56.460 --> 00:03:59.460 the news of Hamzah’s conversion spread throughout Makkah, 00:03:59.460 --> 00:04:03.460 and the news struck the polytheists like a thunderbolt. 00:04:03.460 --> 00:04:07.460 As for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:04:07.460 --> 00:04:12.460 you may speak as you wish of his joy at his uncle’s conversion, without restraint. 00:04:12.460 --> 00:04:14.460 And as for the Muslims, 00:04:14.460 --> 00:04:20.459 say what you will of their delight at the addition of this Qurayshi leader to their ranks. 00:04:20.459 --> 00:04:26.459 For they had known no two days in Makkah more joyful to their hearts or dearer to their souls 00:04:26.459 --> 00:04:29.459 than the day of the conversion of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, 00:04:29.459 --> 00:04:33.459 and the day of the conversion of Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib. 00:04:33.459 --> 00:04:34.459 No sooner had they embraced Islam 00:04:34.459 --> 00:04:39.459 than they resolved with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:04:39.459 --> 00:04:42.459 to go out to the Ka'bah and circumambulate it, 00:04:42.459 --> 00:04:47.519 and to perform their prayer there in the sight and presence of Quraysh. 00:04:47.519 --> 00:04:51.519 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, responded to them, 00:04:51.519 --> 00:04:57.519 and went out under their protection, one in front of him and the other behind him, 00:04:57.519 --> 00:05:00.519 until he reached the Sacred Ka'bah. 00:05:00.519 --> 00:05:02.519 He circumambulated the House seven times, 00:05:02.519 --> 00:05:06.519 and prayed the Dhuhr prayer there, safe and reassured. 00:05:06.519 --> 00:05:08.519 Then he departed to the House of al-Arqam, 00:05:08.519 --> 00:05:11.519 while the eyes of Quraysh watched him, 00:05:11.519 --> 00:05:15.519 and their hearts were torn with rage and malice toward him. 00:05:15.519 --> 00:05:20.579 When the Messenger, peace be upon him, migrated to Madinah, 00:05:20.579 --> 00:05:25.579 the first banner he commissioned was for his uncle, Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, 00:05:25.579 --> 00:05:28.579 and it was the first banner commissioned in Islam. 00:05:28.579 --> 00:05:30.579 On the day of Badr, 00:05:30.579 --> 00:05:35.579 Hamzah fought the polytheists with the most intense and greatest of efforts. 00:05:35.579 --> 00:05:38.579 He was a heavy burden upon the polytheists, 00:05:38.579 --> 00:05:40.579 and a source of severe affliction for them. 00:05:40.579 --> 00:05:44.579 No sooner had the two hosts met on that glorious day 00:05:44.579 --> 00:05:47.579 than Hamzah emerged like a grey camel, 00:05:47.579 --> 00:05:51.579 having placed a mark on his chest to distinguish him from others, 00:05:51.579 --> 00:05:54.579 and to indicate him to anyone who sought him out. 00:05:54.579 --> 00:06:00.579 His mark was a red ostrich feather that he had fixed to his chest. 00:06:00.579 --> 00:06:03.579 Then, there emerged from the ranks of the polytheists 00:06:03.579 --> 00:06:06.579 al-Aswad ibn Abd al-Asad al-Makhzumi, 00:06:06.579 --> 00:06:09.579 a fierce man of ill character. 00:06:09.579 --> 00:06:12.579 He said, "I swear by al-Lat and al-'Uzza, 00:06:12.579 --> 00:06:15.579 I shall drink from the Muslims' cistern, 00:06:15.579 --> 00:06:17.579 or I shall destroy it, 00:06:17.579 --> 00:06:19.579 or I shall die before it." 00:06:19.579 --> 00:06:22.579 Hamzah, may Allah be pleased with him, stepped out to meet him, 00:06:22.579 --> 00:06:25.579 and struck him a blow that severed his leg. 00:06:25.579 --> 00:06:29.579 He fell on his back, with blood gushing from him, 00:06:30.579 --> 00:06:34.579 and he began to crawl toward the cistern to fulfill his oath, 00:06:34.579 --> 00:06:38.649 but Hamzah finished him off before he could reach his goal. 00:06:38.649 --> 00:06:41.649 Then, after him, emerged 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, 00:06:41.649 --> 00:06:44.649 accompanied by his brother Shaybah and his son al-Walid. 00:06:44.649 --> 00:06:48.649 When they stepped away from the ranks, they called for a duel. 00:06:48.649 --> 00:06:51.649 In the blink of an eye, there rose to meet them 00:06:51.649 --> and rise, O Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, 00:07:19.649 --> 00:07:22.649 and rise, O 'Ali ibn Abi Talib." 00:07:22.649 --> 00:07:26.649 'Utbah said, "Now, yes, these are noble peers." 00:07:26.649 --> 00:07:29.649 'Ali went out to al-Walid ibn 'Utbah, 00:07:29.649 --> 00:07:32.649 and they were two young men of similar age, 00:07:32.649 --> 00:07:33.649 and he killed him. 00:07:33.649 --> 00:07:35.649 Then Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib went out 00:07:35.649 --> 00:07:37.649 to Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah, 00:07:37.649 --> 00:07:40.649 and they were of similar age, 00:07:40.649 --> 00:07:41.649 and he killed him. 00:07:41.649 --> 00:07:43.649 And 'Ubaydah ibn al-Harith went out 00:07:43.649 --> 00:07:45.649 to 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, 00:07:45.649 --> 00:07:47.649 and they were two elderly men, --> 00:08:09.810 the polytheists wanted 00:08:09.810 --> 00:08:12.810 to take revenge on the killer of their men in general, 00:08:12.810 --> 00:08:14.810 and they wanted 00:08:14.810 --> 00:08:16.810 to take revenge on Hamzah in particular, 00:08:16.810 --> 00:08:19.810 after he had humiliated their leaders at Badr 00:08:19.810 --> 00:08:22.810 and killed those of their chiefs who were killed. 00:08:22.810 --> 00:08:24.810 When Hamzah saw the defeat 00:08:24.810 --> 00:08:26.810 that had befallen the Muslims, 00:08:26.810 --> 00:08:27.810 he surged and raged, 00:08:27.810 --> 00:08:29.810 the hands of 00:08:56.809 --> 00:08:59.809 an Abyssinian slave named Wahshi. 00:08:59.809 --> 00:09:01.970 When the women of the polytheists learned 00:09:01.970 --> 00:09:03.970 of the fall of the Muslim champions, 00:09:03.970 --> 00:09:05.970 led by the Lion of Allah, 00:09:05.970 --> 00:09:07.970 Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, 00:09:07.970 --> 00:09:09.970 a group of them rushed forward, 00:09:09.970 --> 00:09:12.970 led by Hind bint 'Utbah, 00:09:12.970 --> 00:09:14.970 whose father, brother, 00:09:14.970 --> 00:09:16.970 and uncle had been killed at Badr 00:09:16.970 --> 00:09:18.970 at the hands of Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, 00:09:18.970 --> 00:09:20.970 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, 00:09:21.970 --> 00:09:23.970 and 'Ubaydah ibn al-Harith. 00:09:23.970 --> 00:09:25.970 She began to roam among the slain, 00:09:25.970 --> 00:09:28.970 disemboweling the bodies, gouging out eyes, 00:09:28.970 --> 00:09:31.970 cutting off ears, and mutilating noses. 00:09:31.970 --> 00:09:34.970 Then she made from the noses and ears 00:09:34.970 --> 00:09:37.970 necklaces and anklets with which she adorned herself, 00:09:37.970 --> 00:09:39.970 and she gave her jewelry to Wahshi 00:09:39.970 --> 00:09:42.970 as a reward for killing Hamzah. 00:09:42.970 --> 00:09:46.970 When Hind reached Hamzah, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:09:46.970 --> 00:09:48.970 she split open his chest, 00:09:48.970 --> 00:09:50.970 tore out his liver, and chewed it, 00:09:50.970 --> 00:09:52.970 but she could not swallow it, so she spat it out. 00:09:52.970 --> 00:09:56.970 And from this, she was called "the eater of the liver." 00:09:56.970 --> 00:09:58.970 When the dust of battle settled, 00:09:58.970 --> 00:10:01.970 and the news of the mutilation of the Muslims spread, 00:10:01.970 --> Ansar 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:15.000 who had been mutilated just as Hamza had been. 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:20.000 We felt a sense of discomfort and modesty in shrouding Hamza in two garments 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:22.000 while the Ansari had no shroud at all. 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:25.000 So we said: one garment for Hamza, 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:27.000 and one garment for the Ansari." 00:11:43.129 --> 00:11:44.129 his feet would be exposed, 00:11:44.129 --> 00:11:47.129 and if it covered his feet, his head would be exposed. 00:11:47.129 --> 00:11:49.129 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, 00:11:49.129 --> 00:11:52.129 "Cover his head with the garment, 00:11:52.129 --> 00:11:55.129 and place some leaves over his feet." 00:11:55.129 --> 00:12:01.129 Do not ask about the grief of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, for his uncle. 00:12:01.129 --> 00:12:06.129 For he, peace be upon him, looked upon a scene the likes of which he had never seen more painful. 00:12:06.129 --> 00:12:08.129 He said, 00:12:08.129 --> 00:12:10.129 "May the mercy of Allah be upon you. 00:12:10.129 --> 00:12:12.129 You were indeed one who maintained ties of kinship, 00:12:12.129 --> 00:12:14.129 and one who performed many good deeds." 00:12:14.129 --> 00:12:19.129 "By Allah, I shall surely mutilate seventy of them if I gain victory over them." 00:12:19.129 --> 00:12:24.129 Then Jibril descended upon him before he had left his place with the words of the Almighty, 00:12:24.129 --> 00:12:32.129 “If ye punish, then punish with the like of that wherewith ye were afflicted.
