00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.040
Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

00:00:07.040 --> 00:00:18.179
“O ‘A’ishah, he never once said, ‘My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment.’”

00:00:18.179 --> 00:00:25.820
The Arabs in their pre-Islamic era of ignorance were renowned for their generosity, to the point that they became proverbial for it.

00:00:25.820 --> 00:00:30.820
Generosity and kindness toward others are evidence of a magnanimous soul.

00:00:30.820 --> 00:00:33.820
This is not exclusive to Muslims.

00:00:33.820 --> 00:00:39.820
Rather, it is linked to good character, regardless of the faith a person follows.

00:00:39.820 --> 00:00:46.850
In this blessed month, we may see or hear about certain non-Muslim public figures.

00:00:46.850 --> 00:00:51.850
They provide food and prepare Iftar tables for those fasting.

00:00:51.850 --> 00:00:59.850
Does this benefit them, and how should we handle such news when it spreads among us?

00:00:59.850 --> 00:01:05.040
‘Abdullah Ibn Jud‘an was a man from the pre-Islamic era.

00:01:05.040 --> 00:01:08.040
He was famous for his generosity and maintaining family ties.

00:01:08.040 --> 00:01:11.040
Al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, said of him:

00:01:11.040 --> 00:01:14.040
“Ibn Jud‘an was very frequent in providing food.”

00:01:14.040 --> 00:01:19.040
“He even kept a large basin for guests that one had to climb a ladder to reach.”

00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:25.040
He was from the tribe of Banu Tamim Ibn Murrah, the relatives of ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:28.040
He was one of the leaders of Quraysh.

00:01:28.040 --> 00:01:34.069
It was in the house of Ibn Jud‘an that Quraysh gathered to establish the Alliance of Virtue (Hilf al-Fudul).

00:01:34.069 --> 00:01:36.069
It was formed to defend the oppressed.

00:01:36.069 --> 00:01:40.069
Regarding this, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

00:01:40.069 --> 00:01:44.069
“I witnessed the Alliance of the Perfumed (Hilf al-Mutayyibin) with my paternal uncles.”

00:01:44.069 --> 00:01:48.069
“I would not trade my participation in it for a herd of red camels.”

00:01:48.069 --> 00:01:53.170
They were called the “Perfumed” because they placed perfume in a vessel.

00:01:53.170 --> 00:01:55.170
They dipped their hands into it.

00:01:55.170 --> 00:02:00.170
They pledged to support one another and to take the rights of the oppressed from the oppressor.

00:02:00.170 --> 00:02:04.170
They were the tribes of Banu Hashim, Banu Zuhrah, and Taym.

00:02:04.170 --> 00:02:08.330
So, ‘Abdullah Ibn Jud‘an was a generous man who hosted guests.

00:02:08.330 --> 00:02:12.330
He maintained his family ties and defended the oppressed.

00:02:12.330 --> 00:02:17.330
He spent his wealth feeding people and showing them kindness.

00:02:17.330 --> 00:02:20.330
Will this benefit him on the Day of Resurrection?

00:02:20.330 --> 00:02:24.520
This is what ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, wondered about.

00:02:24.520 --> 00:02:28.520
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, answered her.

00:02:28.520 --> 00:02:31.520
In a hadith of profound meaning.

00:02:31.520 --> 00:02:34.810
‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says:

00:02:34.810 --> 00:02:38.810
“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, Ibn Jud‘an...’”

00:02:38.810 --> 00:02:43.810
“‘...in the pre-Islamic era, he used to maintain family ties and feed the poor.’”

00:02:43.810 --> 00:02:45.810
“‘Will that benefit him?’”

00:02:45.810 --> 00:02:48.810
He said, “No, O ‘A’ishah.”

00:02:48.810 --> 00:02:54.810
“He never once said, ‘My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment.’”

00:02:54.810 --> 00:02:56.810
Narrated by Muslim.

00:02:56.810 --> 00:03:00.000
How beautiful is the Prophetic discourse!

00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:03.000
How magnificent are the elegant Prophetic expressions.

00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:06.000
Which are mindful of the listeners' feelings.

00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:11.000
Let us reflect on how the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, answered.

00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:14.000
The question posed by ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:16.000
It was an educational response.

00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:19.000
Through it, he taught her several matters.

00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:21.259
‘Abdullah Ibn Jud‘an.

00:03:21.259 --> 00:03:24.259
Was one of the relatives of ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

00:03:24.259 --> 00:03:28.259
She was asking about his fate on the Day of Resurrection.

00:03:28.259 --> 00:03:32.259
Despite what was known of his generosity and maintaining of family ties.

00:03:32.259 --> 00:03:35.259
And ‘A’ishah held a great status.

00:03:35.259 --> 00:03:38.259
With the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:03:38.259 --> 00:03:41.259
Yet the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, answered her.

00:03:41.259 --> 00:03:43.259
Without favoritism.

00:03:43.259 --> 00:03:47.259
For the rulings of the Sharia are not altered for the sake of those we love.

00:03:47.259 --> 00:03:49.259
Or for the sake of our relatives.

00:03:49.259 --> 00:03:53.259
Or for the sake of celebrities in media or politics.

00:03:53.259 --> 00:03:55.259
“No, O ‘A’ishah.”

00:03:55.259 --> 00:03:58.259
That was the answer.

00:03:58.259 --> 00:04:01.259
His generosity and kindness do not benefit him.

00:04:01.259 --> 00:04:04.259
Nor does his maintaining of family ties on the Day of Resurrection.

00:04:04.259 --> 00:04:07.319
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not limit himself.

00:04:07.319 --> 00:04:11.319
To a brief answer that it would not benefit him.

00:04:11.319 --> 00:04:14.319
Rather, he explained to her the reason for that.

00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:17.319
We notice that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:04:17.319 --> 00:04:22.319
Calls her by the name most beloved to her and to her Prophet.

00:04:22.319 --> 00:04:24.319
“O ‘A’ishah.”

00:04:24.319 --> 00:04:27.319
To add gentleness to the answer.

00:04:27.319 --> 00:04:31.319
And to soften it for ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

00:04:31.319 --> 00:04:35.509
Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, taught her.

00:04:35.509 --> 00:04:37.509
The principle regarding this matter.

00:04:37.509 --> 00:04:39.509
He said to her:

00:04:39.509 --> 00:04:41.509
“He never once said...”

00:04:41.509 --> 00:04:45.509
“...‘My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment.’”

00:04:45.509 --> 00:04:48.509
He did not say to her, “He is a disbeliever.”

00:04:48.509 --> 00:04:52.509
For that word might have been heavy for her to hear.

00:04:52.509 --> 00:04:56.509
But he conveyed the meaning to her using other words.

00:04:56.509 --> 00:05:00.509
Which provide an educational dimension to her life.

00:05:00.509 --> 00:05:02.670
The Day of Judgment.

00:05:02.670 --> 00:05:04.670
Is the Day of Reckoning and Recompense.

00:05:04.670 --> 00:05:07.670
Whoever does not believe in this Day.

00:05:07.670 --> 00:05:10.670
Does not account for it in his deeds.

00:05:10.670 --> 00:05:13.670
He may perform good deeds in this world.

00:05:13.670 --> 00:05:16.670
But he does not hope for their reward in the Hereafter.

00:05:16.670 --> 00:05:19.670
Because he does not believe in the Day of Reckoning.

00:05:19.670 --> 00:05:24.670
This is the state of the disbelievers who perform good deeds.

00:05:24.670 --> 00:05:27.670
The most they attain in this world, and what they hope for.

00:05:27.670 --> 00:05:30.670
Is praise and a good reputation.

00:05:30.670 --> 00:05:32.670
This is the ultimate extent of their goal.

00:05:32.670 --> 00:05:34.670
Because that is what they worked for.

00:05:34.670 --> 00:05:36.670
Allah the Almighty said:

00:05:36.670 --> 00:05:42.670
“Whoso desireth the life of the world and its pomp, We shall repay them their deeds herein, and therein they will not be wronged.” (11:15)

00:05:42.670 --> 00:05:48.670
“Whoso desireth the life of the world and its pomp, We shall repay them their deeds herein, and therein they will not be wronged.” (11:15)

00:05:48.670 --> 00:05:51.670
“Whoso desireth the life of the world and its pomp, We shall repay them their deeds herein, and therein they will not be wronged.” (11:15)

00:05:51.670 --> 00:06:00.670
“Those are they for whom is naught in the Hereafter save the Fire. (All) that they contrive here is vain and (all) that they are wont to do is fruitless.” (11:16)

00:06:00.670 --> 00:06:03.670
“Those are they for whom is naught in the Hereafter save the Fire. (All) that they contrive here is vain and (all) that they are wont to do is fruitless.” (11:16)

00:06:03.670 --> 00:06:07.670
“And vain is that which they were doing.”

00:06:07.670 --> 00:06:11.699
On the authority of Anas Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

00:06:11.699 --> 00:06:15.699
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

00:06:15.699 --> 00:06:19.699
“Indeed, Allah does not wrong a believer for a good deed.”

00:06:19.699 --> 00:06:23.699
“He is given for it in this world and rewarded for it in the Hereafter.”

00:06:23.699 --> 00:06:25.699
“As for the disbeliever.”

00:06:25.699 --> 00:06:29.699
“He is fed for the good deeds he did for the sake of Allah in this world.”

00:06:29.699 --> 00:06:32.699
“Until, when he reaches the Hereafter.”

00:06:32.699 --> 00:06:35.699
“He has no good deed left to be rewarded for.”

00:06:35.699 --> 00:06:37.699
Narrated by Muslim.

00:06:37.699 --> 00:06:40.699
This is from the justice of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic.

00:06:40.699 --> 00:06:43.699
Toward all people, both Muslim and disbeliever.

00:06:43.699 --> 00:06:46.769
Al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

00:06:46.769 --> 00:06:48.769
“The meaning of this hadith.”

00:06:48.769 --> 00:06:53.769
“Is that what he used to do of maintaining ties, feeding, and other noble acts.”

00:06:53.769 --> 00:06:55.769
“Does not benefit him in the Hereafter.”

00:06:55.769 --> 00:06:57.769
“Because he was a disbeliever.”

00:06:57.769 --> 00:07:01.769
“And this is the meaning of his saying, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:”

00:07:01.769 --> 00:07:03.769
“He never once said...”

00:07:03.769 --> 00:07:06.769
“...‘My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment.’”

00:07:06.769 --> 00:07:09.769
“Meaning he did not believe in the Resurrection.”

00:07:09.769 --> 00:07:12.769
“And whoever does not believe in it is a disbeliever.”

00:07:12.769 --> 00:07:14.769
“And no deed benefits him.”

00:07:14.769 --> 00:07:17.769
Al-Qadi ‘Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

00:07:17.769 --> 00:07:23.769
“There is a consensus that the deeds of disbelievers do not benefit them.”

00:07:23.769 --> 00:07:27.769
“They are not rewarded for them with bliss, nor is their punishment lightened.”

00:07:28.769 --> 00:07:31.769
“However, some are punished more severely than others.”

00:07:31.769 --> 00:07:34.959
“According to their crimes.”

00:07:34.959 --> 00:07:38.959
From this, we know that the scale by which we weigh people.

00:07:38.959 --> 00:07:40.959
Is the scale of the Sharia.

00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:43.959
So we are not deceived by the actions of disbelievers.

00:07:43.959 --> 00:07:49.180
And we do not prefer them over Muslims in any way, shape, or form.

00:07:49.180 --> 00:07:54.180
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, taught ‘A’ishah through this answer.

00:07:54.180 --> 00:07:58.180
The importance of a person making this supplication.

00:07:58.180 --> 00:08:02.180
“My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment.”

00:08:02.180 --> 00:08:04.180
For it is the request of the Prophets.

00:08:04.180 --> 00:08:06.180
So how much more so for others?

00:08:06.180 --> 00:08:09.180
Allah the Almighty said regarding Ibrahim, peace be upon him:

00:08:09.180 --> 00:08:20.180
“And Who, I ardently hope, will forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment.” (26:82)

00:08:20.180 --> 00:08:23.180
And all the children of Adam are prone to sin.

00:08:23.180 --> 00:08:26.180
So they are all in need of this supplication.

00:08:26.180 --> 00:08:32.179
We ask Allah the Almighty to forgive us our sins on the Day of Judgment.

00:08:32.179 --> 00:08:36.860
We will continue in a future meeting, if Allah wills.

00:08:36.860 --> 00:08:39.860
And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

00:08:39.860 --> 00:08:47.309
Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.
