era). 00:00:15.710 --> 00:00:19.710 The people of the Jahiliyyah used to consider ‘Umrah forbidden after Hajj. 00:00:19.710 --> 00:00:22.710 Until the months of Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram had passed. 00:00:22.710 --> 00:00:25.710 They would only permit it starting in Safar. 00:00:25.710 --> 00:00:33.810 However, the ‘Umrah of our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, took place immediately after the conclusion of Hajj in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah. 00:00:33.810 --> 00:00:41.810 Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, noted the Prophet’s, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, approval of our Mother ‘A’ishah’s action, stating: 00:00:41.810 --> 00:00:48.810 "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, did not have ‘A’ishah perform ‘Umrah in Dhu al-Hijjah, 00:00:48.810 --> 00:00:51.810 except to abolish the practice of the polytheists." 00:00:51.810 --> 00:00:55.899 For this clan of Quraysh, and those who followed their religion, 00:00:55.899 --> 00:00:57.899 used to say: 00:00:57.899 --> 00:00:59.899 "When the camel’s hump heals," 00:00:59.899 --> 00:01:00.899 "and the wound on its back recovers," 00:01:00.899 --> 00:01:02.899 "and the month of Safar begins," 00:01:02.899 --> 00:01:05.900 "then ‘Umrah becomes permissible for those who wish to perform it." 00:01:05.900 --> 00:01:11.900 Thus, they forbade ‘Umrah until Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram had passed. 00:01:11.900 --> 00:01:15.900 So, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, did not have ‘A’ishah perform ‘Umrah, 00:01:15.900 --> 00:01:19.900 except to invalidate that claim of theirs. 00:01:19.900 --> 00:01:25.859 Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, performing the farewell circumambulation (Tawaf al-Wada‘) at dawn. 00:01:27.700 --> 00:01:35.700 Once the Prophet, peace be upon him, was reassured that our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, had arrived and completed her ‘Umrah, 00:01:35.700 --> 00:01:37.700 he gave the signal to depart. 00:01:37.700 --> 00:01:43.730 The time of our Mother ‘A’ishah’s arrival was during the last part of the night (Sahar), 00:01:43.730 --> 00:01:45.730 as she herself reported: 00:01:45.730 --> 00:01:47.730 "Then I came to him at the time of Sahar." 00:01:47.730 --> 00:01:50.730 He then signaled to his Companions to prepare for departure, 00:01:50.730 --> 00:01:51.730 and they set out. 00:01:51.730 --> 00:01:54.730 He passed by the Ka‘bah before the morning prayer, 00:01:54.730 --> 00:01:56.730 and performed Tawaf upon leaving. 00:01:56.730 --> 00:02:00.730 Then he departed, heading toward Madinah. 00:02:00.730 --> 00:02:07.760 The Prophet, peace be upon him, had delayed his Tawaf of the House until the very last moment before his departure. 00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:09.759 He performed it before the dawn prayer, 00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:14.759 as our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, informed us, saying: 00:02:14.759 --> 00:02:17.759 "He performed Tawaf before the morning prayer." 00:02:18.759 --> 00:02:22.919 The dawn prayer overtook the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:02:22.919 --> 00:02:24.919 while he was still at the Sacred Mosque, 00:02:24.919 --> 00:02:26.919 so he led them in the dawn prayer. 00:02:26.919 --> 00:02:29.919 Then he set off for Madinah. 00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:38.180 Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, was unable to perform the farewell Tawaf when they arrived before dawn, 00:02:38.180 --> 00:02:40.180 due to her illness. 00:02:40.180 --> 00:02:42.180 By then, the call to the dawn prayer had been made. 00:02:42.180 --> 00:02:46.180 She complained of this to the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:02:46.180 --> 00:02:48.180 and he said to her: 00:02:48.180 --> 00:02:50.180 "When the Iqamah for the morning prayer is called," 00:02:50.180 --> 00:02:54.180 "perform Tawaf on your camel while the people are praying." 00:02:54.180 --> 00:02:58.180 "Perform Tawaf behind the people while you are mounted." 00:02:58.180 --> 00:03:00.300 Umm Salamah said: 00:03:00.300 --> 00:03:06.300 "So I performed Tawaf while the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was praying beside the House," 00:03:06.300 --> 00:03:10.300 "reciting Surah al-Tur and the Book inscribed." 00:03:10.300 --> 00:03:13.560 This is another situation, O sister in need, 00:03:13.560 --> 00:03:15.560 that a woman might face, 00:03:15.560 --> 00:03:18.560 which is falling ill during the final days of Hajj, 00:03:18.560 --> 00:03:21.560 making her unable to perform the farewell Tawaf. 00:03:21.560 --> 00:03:26.560 The Prophet, peace be upon him, permitted her to perform it while mounted, 00:03:26.560 --> 00:03:30.560 similar to how one might perform it today using a wheelchair. 00:03:30.560 --> 00:03:36.750 In the Prophet’s, peace be upon him, guidance to Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah, 00:03:36.750 --> 00:03:39.750 regarding performing Tawaf while the people were praying, 00:03:39.750 --> 00:03:41.750 and performing it behind them, 00:03:41.750 --> 00:03:43.750 there are benefits for women. 00:03:44.750 --> 00:03:50.750 Among them is that a woman should not intermingle with men during Tawaf, 00:03:50.750 --> 00:03:53.750 and that she should choose a time when men are occupied, 00:03:53.750 --> 00:03:56.750 such as performing Tawaf while they are praying. 00:03:56.750 --> 00:04:02.750 All of this is to keep women away from intermingling and physical proximity to men. 00:04:02.750 --> 00:04:05.750 This is despite her being the Mother of the Believers, 00:04:05.750 --> 00:04:09.750 in the purest of places, and during a great act of worship. 00:04:09.750 --> 00:04:12.750 Yet, she is commanded to keep away from men. 00:04:12.750 --> 00:04:15.750 What, then, should we say about mixed work environments, 00:04:15.750 --> 00:04:23.750 where a woman spends more time than she spends in her own home with her husband and children? 00:04:23.750 --> 00:04:28.709 An ‘Umrah in Ramadan is like a Hajj with me. 00:04:28.709 --> 00:04:36.060 We all wish we could have been with the Prophet, peace be upon him, during his Hajj, 00:04:36.060 --> 00:04:40.060 to drink from his guidance and be honored by his companionship. 00:04:40.060 --> 00:04:45.089 But Allah has decreed for us to live in another time, 00:04:45.089 --> 00:04:50.089 to try us and test the sincerity of our following of our Prophet. 00:04:50.089 --> 00:04:53.180 From the mercy of Allah, the Almighty, toward us, 00:04:53.180 --> 00:05:01.180 He has provided us with a door through which we can attain the reward of a Hajj with the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:05:01.180 --> 00:05:06.180 even if we live in a time other than his. 00:05:07.180 --> 00:05:11.629 This is through an ‘Umrah performed in the month of Ramadan. 00:05:11.629 --> 00:05:16.629 When the Prophet, peace be upon him, returned from the Farewell Hajj, 00:05:16.629 --> 00:05:19.629 he met Umm Sinan al-Ansariyyah. 00:05:19.629 --> 00:05:23.629 He asked her, "What kept you from performing Hajj?" 00:05:23.629 --> 00:05:27.629 She replied, "The father of so-and-so," meaning her husband. 00:05:27.629 --> 00:05:31.629 "He had two camels; he went on Hajj on one of them," 00:05:31.629 --> 00:05:34.629 "and the other was used to irrigate our land." 00:05:34.629 --> 00:05:39.699 He said, "An ‘Umrah in Ramadan fulfills a Hajj," 00:05:39.699 --> 00:05:41.699 "or a Hajj with me." 00:05:41.699 --> 00:05:44.699 Meaning: You receive the reward and merit of a Hajj with me. 00:05:44.699 --> 00:05:48.699 This is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills. 00:05:48.699 --> 00:05:55.819 This incident occurred with more than one woman during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him. 00:05:55.819 --> 00:05:59.819 It also happened with Umm Ma‘qal. 00:05:59.819 --> 00:06:02.819 Umm Ma‘qal, may Allah be pleased with her, said: 00:06:02.819 --> 00:06:07.860 "When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, performed the Farewell Hajj," 00:06:07.860 --> 00:06:10.860 "we had a camel." 00:06:10.860 --> 00:06:13.860 "Abu Ma‘qal dedicated it in the cause of Allah." 00:06:13.860 --> 00:06:17.860 "Then we fell ill, and Abu Ma‘qal passed away." 00:06:17.860 --> 00:06:21.860 "The Prophet, peace be upon him, had set out," 00:06:21.860 --> 00:06:24.860 "and when he finished his Hajj, I went to him." 00:06:24.860 --> 00:06:27.860 "He said, 'O Umm Ma‘qal,'" 00:06:27.860 --> 00:06:30.860 "'what kept you from going out with us?'" 00:06:30.860 --> 00:06:33.889 "She said, 'We had prepared ourselves,'" 00:06:33.889 --> 00:06:35.889 "'but Abu Ma‘qal passed away.'" 00:06:35.889 --> 00:06:37.889 "'We had a camel,'" 00:06:37.889 --> 00:06:39.889 "'which he was to perform Hajj upon.'" 00:06:39.889 --> 00:06:43.889 "'Abu Ma‘qal had bequeathed it in the cause of Allah.'" 00:06:43.889 --> 00:06:46.949 "He said, 'Why did you not go out on it?'" 00:06:46.949 --> 00:06:49.949 "'For Hajj is in the cause of Allah.'" 00:06:49.949 --> 00:06:54.079 "'But since you missed this Hajj with us,'" 00:06:54.079 --> 00:06:56.079 "'perform ‘Umrah in Ramadan,'" 00:06:56.079 --> 00:06:58.079 "'for it is a Hajj.'" 00:06:58.079 --> 00:07:01.269 So, whoever among you, O sisters, is able, 00:07:01.269 --> 00:07:03.269 to perform ‘Umrah in Ramadan, 00:07:03.269 --> 00:07:05.269 do not neglect it, 00:07:05.269 --> 00:07:09.269 for it carries a great reward. 00:07:09.269 --> 00:07:13.490 This is the matter of "the appearance of the litters" (zuhur al-hasr). 00:07:13.490 --> 00:07:16.670 During the Farewell Hajj, 00:07:16.670 --> 00:07:19.670 the Prophet, peace be upon him, took 00:07:19.670 --> 00:07:22.670 all his wives with him for Hajj, 00:07:22.670 --> 00:07:25.670 to fulfill the obligation of Islam upon them, 00:07:25.670 --> 00:07:27.670 the pillar of Hajj, 00:07:27.670 --> 00:07:30.670 which is the fifth pillar of Islam. 00:07:30.670 --> 00:07:33.740 After the rituals of Hajj were completed, 00:07:33.740 --> 00:07:37.740 the Prophet, peace be upon him, said to his wives: 00:07:37.740 --> 00:07:40.740 "This is the appearance of the litters." 00:07:40.740 --> 00:07:44.740 He said, "It is only this Hajj," 00:07:44.740 --> 00:07:47.740 "then we must remain in our litters within our homes." 00:07:47.740 --> 00:07:50.769 They all used to perform Hajj, 00:07:50.769 --> 00:07:52.769 except for Zaynab bint Jahsh 00:07:52.769 --> 00:07:54.769 and Sawdah bint Zam‘ah. 00:07:54.769 --> 00:07:56.769 They used to say: 00:07:56.769 --> 00:07:59.769 "By Allah, no beast shall move us," 00:07:59.769 --> 00:08:04.769 "after we heard that from the Prophet, peace be upon him." 00:08:04.769 --> 00:08:09.930 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, understood from this hadith 00:08:09.930 --> 00:08:13.930 that Hajj was not obligatory upon them after that Hajj, 00:08:13.930 --> 00:08:16.930 and she did not understand it as a total prohibition 00:08:16.930 --> 00:08:18.930 of Hajj after that. 00:08:18.930 --> 00:08:21.930 That is why the scholars said, 00:08:21.930 --> 00:08:23.930 in defense of ‘A’ishah, 00:08:23.930 --> 00:08:26.930 that she interpreted the aforementioned hadith, 00:08:26.930 --> 00:08:29.930 just as others among her peers interpreted it, 00:08:29.930 --> 00:08:31.930 to mean that 00:08:31.930 --> 00:08:35.929 no Hajj was obligatory upon them other than that one. 00:08:35.929 --> 00:08:40.960 This was reinforced for her by his saying, peace be upon him: 00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:43.960 "But the best of Jihad" 00:08:43.960 --> 00:08:45.960 "is Hajj and ‘Umrah." 00:08:45.960 --> 00:08:47.960 And Allah knows best. 00:08:47.960 --> 00:08:54.269 This concludes the story of our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, 00:08:54.269 --> 00:09:00.269 and the rest of the wives of the Prophet, peace be upon him, the Mothers of the Believers, 00:09:00.269 --> 00:09:02.269 during the Farewell Hajj, 00:09:02.269 --> 00:09:09.269 and the accompanying stances of the female Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all. 00:09:09.269 --> 00:09:15.370 And our final prayer is that all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
