WEBVTT 00:00:00.460 --> 00:00:02.459 Stories of the Prophets, 00:00:02.459 --> 00:00:05.580 stories of the Prophets, 00:00:05.580 --> 00:00:07.580 peace be upon them. 00:00:07.580 --> 00:00:09.619 Allah's blessings, 00:00:09.619 --> 00:00:11.619 followed by 00:00:11.619 --> 00:00:13.619 peace, 00:00:13.619 --> 00:00:15.619 be upon the best of all 00:00:15.619 --> 00:00:17.620 creation— 00:00:17.620 --> 00:00:20.129 men of resolve, 00:00:20.129 --> 00:00:22.129 whose station 00:00:22.129 --> 00:00:24.379 is sublime. 00:00:24.379 --> 00:00:26.379 The Story of Lot, 00:00:26.379 --> 00:00:28.379 peace be upon him. 00:00:28.379 --> 00:00:32.460 In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:00:32.460 --> 00:00:34.659 All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, 00:00:34.659 --> 00:00:36.659 and peace and blessings 00:00:36.659 --> 00:00:38.659 be upon our Prophet Muhammad, 00:00:38.659 --> 00:00:40.659 and upon all his family and Companions 00:00:40.659 --> 00:00:42.659 altogether. 00:00:42.659 --> 00:00:44.659 To proceed: 00:00:44.659 --> 00:00:46.939 In the region of Jordan, 00:00:46.939 --> 00:00:48.939 between the Hijaz and the Levant, 00:00:48.939 --> 00:00:50.939 near the Dead Sea, 00:00:50.939 --> 00:00:52.939 lay the town of Sodom. 00:00:52.939 --> 00:00:54.939 That town 00:00:54.939 --> 00:00:57.009 was inhabited by a people 00:00:57.009 --> 00:00:59.009 who deviated from normal human nature. 00:00:59.009 --> 00:01:01.009 Their natural disposition was inverted, 00:01:01.009 --> 00:01:03.009 their natural disposition was perverted, 00:01:03.009 --> 00:01:05.010 their creed was corrupted, 00:01:05.010 --> 00:01:07.010 and their morals deteriorated. 00:01:07.010 --> 00:01:09.010 For they disbelieved 00:01:09.010 --> 00:01:11.010 in Allah the Exalted 00:01:11.010 --> 00:01:13.010 and associated partners with Him. 00:01:13.010 --> 00:01:15.010 In addition to that, 00:01:15.010 --> 00:01:17.010 they reached the utmost extreme 00:01:17.010 --> 00:01:19.010 in moral depravity, 00:01:19.010 --> 00:01:21.010 utter shamelessness, 00:01:21.010 --> 00:01:23.010 and the pinnacle of folly and ignorance. 00:01:23.010 --> 00:01:25.010 They deviated from the sound innate disposition 00:01:25.010 --> 00:01:27.010 upon which Allah 00:01:27.010 --> 00:01:29.010 created humankind— 00:01:29.010 --> 00:01:31.010 the natural inclination of the male toward the female 00:01:31.010 --> 00:01:33.010 and vice versa. 00:01:33.010 --> 00:01:35.010 Thus, their men began 00:01:35.010 --> 00:01:37.010 approaching one another sexually, 00:01:37.010 --> 00:01:39.010 forsaking what 00:01:39.010 --> 00:01:41.010 Allah had created for them in their wives. 00:01:41.010 --> 00:01:43.010 May Allah despise them 00:01:43.010 --> 00:01:45.010 and despise their actions! 00:01:45.969 --> 00:01:47.969 Along with that, 00:01:47.969 --> 00:01:49.969 they also used to cut off the way 00:01:49.969 --> 00:01:51.969 of travelers, 00:01:51.969 --> 00:01:53.969 assaulting them, 00:01:53.969 --> 00:01:55.969 killing them, and seizing 00:01:55.969 --> 00:01:57.969 their wealth. 00:01:57.969 --> 00:01:59.969 Furthermore, they committed in their open gatherings 00:01:59.969 --> 00:02:01.969 vile deeds and disgraceful acts. 00:02:01.969 --> 00:02:04.060 A number of 00:02:04.060 --> 00:02:06.060 exegetes mentioned 00:02:06.060 --> 00:02:08.060 that they used to pass gas openly 00:02:08.060 --> 00:02:10.060 in their assemblies, 00:02:10.060 --> 00:02:12.060 feeling no shame at all in doing so, 00:02:12.060 --> 00:02:14.129 but rather laughing about it, 00:02:14.129 --> 00:02:16.129 in addition to perpetrating 00:02:16.129 --> 00:02:18.129 all forms of wickedness in both 00:02:18.129 --> 00:02:21.150 words and deeds. 00:02:21.150 --> 00:02:23.150 Lot, peace be upon him, 00:02:23.150 --> 00:02:25.150 was the nephew of Abraham, 00:02:25.150 --> 00:02:27.150 peace be upon him. 00:02:27.150 --> 00:02:29.150 He followed the Prophet of Allah 00:02:29.150 --> 00:02:31.150 Abraham, peace be upon him, 00:02:31.150 --> 00:02:33.150 and migrated to the land of 00:02:33.150 --> 00:02:35.150 Palestine. 00:02:35.150 --> 00:02:37.250 So Allah chose him, singled him out, 00:02:37.250 --> 00:02:39.250 honored him, and revealed 00:02:39.250 --> 00:02:41.250 revelation to him. Then, 00:02:41.250 --> 00:02:43.250 He sent him to the town of Sodom 00:02:43.250 --> 00:02:45.250 as a prophet and messenger, 00:02:45.250 --> 00:02:47.250 to call them to the worship of 00:02:47.250 --> 00:02:49.250 Allah alone without any partner, 00:02:49.250 --> 00:02:51.250 to renounce polytheism 00:02:51.250 --> 00:02:53.250 and the worship of other than Allah, 00:02:53.250 --> 00:02:55.250 to straighten their conduct, 00:02:55.250 --> 00:02:57.250 and to rectify what had become corrupted in their innate disposition. 00:02:57.250 --> 00:03:00.210 He began— 00:03:00.210 --> 00:03:02.210 Lot, peace be upon him, began his mission 00:03:02.210 --> 00:03:04.210 of calling to Allah 00:03:04.210 --> 00:03:06.210 in the town of Sodom 00:03:06.210 --> 00:03:08.210 and its neighboring settlements. 00:03:08.210 --> 00:03:10.210 He called them to Tawhid, 00:03:10.210 --> 00:03:12.210 to renounce polytheism, 00:03:12.210 --> 00:03:14.210 and he cautioned and warned them of the punishment 00:03:14.210 --> 00:03:16.210 of Allah the Exalted if they 00:03:16.210 --> 00:03:18.210 disobeyed His command. 00:03:18.210 --> 00:03:20.210 He censured them for their foul deed, 00:03:20.210 --> 00:03:22.210 saying to them, 00:03:22.210 --> 00:03:24.210 "Do you lustfully approach men 00:03:24.210 --> 00:03:26.210 instead of women?" 00:03:26.210 --> 00:03:28.210 “Must ye needs lust after men instead of women? Nay, but ye are folk who act senselessly.” (27:55) 00:03:28.210 --> 00:03:30.530 They did not respond— 00:03:30.530 --> 00:03:32.530 the people of those towns refused the call of 00:03:32.530 --> 00:03:34.530 their prophet, Lot, peace be upon him. 00:03:34.530 --> 00:03:36.530 Instead, they mocked him, 00:03:36.530 --> 00:03:38.530 rejected him and his message, 00:03:38.530 --> 00:03:40.530 and persisted blindly 00:03:40.530 --> 00:03:42.620 in their transgression. 00:03:42.620 --> 00:03:44.620 When Lot, peace be upon him, intensified 00:03:44.620 --> 00:03:46.620 his denunciation of them 00:03:46.620 --> 00:03:48.620 and began confronting them in their assemblies, 00:03:48.620 --> 00:03:50.620 they threatened to banish him 00:03:50.620 --> 00:03:52.620 from their town. 00:03:52.620 --> 00:03:54.620 They said to him, 00:03:54.620 --> 00:03:56.620 "If you do not desist, O Lot, 00:03:56.620 --> 00:03:58.620 you will surely be among those expelled." 00:03:58.620 --> 00:04:00.620 They would urge one 00:04:00.620 --> 00:04:02.620 another, saying, 00:04:02.620 --> 00:04:04.620 "Drive the family of Lot 00:04:04.620 --> 00:04:06.620 out of your town! 00:04:06.620 --> 00:04:08.620 They are indeed a people who keep themselves pure." 00:04:08.620 --> 00:04:10.620 How astonishing! 00:04:10.620 --> 00:04:12.620 The crime of Lot 00:04:12.620 --> 00:04:14.620 and the crime of his family 00:04:14.620 --> 00:04:16.620 was that they purified themselves, 00:04:16.620 --> 00:04:18.620 refusing to defile themselves 00:04:18.620 --> 00:04:20.620 or wade into the mire 00:04:20.620 --> 00:04:22.620 in which their people wallowed! 00:04:22.620 --> 00:04:24.620 Thus, that became a reason 00:04:24.620 --> 00:04:26.620 to condemn them. 00:04:26.620 --> 00:04:28.620 Yet in truth, 00:04:28.620 --> 00:04:30.620 no one in those towns was worthy of praise 00:04:30.620 --> 00:04:32.620 except Lot, peace be upon him, 00:04:32.620 --> 00:04:34.620 and his family, who 00:04:34.620 --> 00:04:36.620 abstained from these abhorrent indecencies. 00:04:36.620 --> 00:04:38.620 However, 00:04:38.620 --> 00:04:40.620 when the innate disposition becomes corrupted, 00:04:40.620 --> 00:04:42.620 virtue is condemned, 00:04:42.620 --> 00:04:45.810 and chastity becomes a crime. 00:04:45.810 --> 00:04:47.810 He did not relent— 00:04:47.810 --> 00:04:49.810 Lot, peace be upon him, did not cease his call, 00:04:49.810 --> 00:04:51.810 despite the threats and intimidation 00:04:51.810 --> 00:04:53.810 with which they tried to terrify him, 00:04:53.810 --> 00:04:55.810 and he continued to advise them 00:04:55.810 --> 00:04:57.810 and guide them. 00:04:57.810 --> 00:04:59.810 When they persisted in their defiance, 00:04:59.810 --> 00:05:01.810 they said to him 00:05:01.810 --> 00:05:03.810 by way of challenge, 00:05:03.810 --> 00:05:05.810 "Bring upon us the punishment of Allah, 00:05:05.810 --> 00:05:07.810 if you are among the truthful!" 00:05:07.810 --> 00:05:09.810 At that point, 00:05:09.810 --> 00:05:11.810 Lot, peace be upon him, called upon 00:05:11.810 --> 00:05:13.810 his Lord, saying, 00:05:13.810 --> 00:05:15.810 "My Lord, help me 00:05:15.810 --> 00:05:17.810 against the corrupting people." 00:05:17.810 --> 00:05:19.870 Allah the Exalted said, 00:05:19.870 --> 00:05:21.870 "And [mention] Lot, 00:05:21.870 --> 00:05:23.870 when he said to his people, 00:05:23.870 --> 00:05:25.870 'Indeed, you commit 00:05:25.870 --> 00:05:27.870 such immorality 00:05:27.870 --> 00:05:29.870 as no one has ever preceded you 00:05:29.870 --> 00:05:31.870 in it 00:05:31.870 --> 00:05:33.870 among all 00:05:33.870 --> 00:05:35.870 of creation. 00:05:35.870 --> 00:05:37.870 Do you indeed approach 00:05:37.870 --> 00:05:39.870 men, cut off 00:05:39.870 --> 00:05:41.870 the highway, and commit 00:05:41.870 --> 00:05:43.870 in your assemblies 00:05:43.870 --> 00:05:45.870 wicked deeds?' 00:05:45.870 --> 00:05:47.870 But the only answer of his people 00:05:47.870 --> 00:05:49.870 was that they said, 00:05:49.870 --> 00:05:51.870 'Bring upon us the punishment of Allah, 00:05:51.870 --> 00:05:53.870 was that they said, 00:05:53.870 --> 00:05:55.870 'Bring upon us the punishment of Allah, 00:05:55.870 --> 00:05:57.870 if you are among the truthful.' 00:06:01.870 --> 00:06:03.870 He said, 'My Lord, help me 00:06:03.870 --> 00:06:05.870 against the corrupting people.'" 00:06:08.420 --> 00:06:10.420 Allah answered the supplication of His servant 00:06:10.420 --> 00:06:12.420 and prophet, Lot, peace be upon him, 00:06:12.420 --> 00:06:14.420 and destruction was decreed 00:06:14.420 --> 00:06:16.420 upon the wrongdoing, 00:06:16.420 --> 00:06:18.420 corrupt people. 00:06:18.420 --> 00:06:20.420 Thereupon, 00:06:20.420 --> 00:06:22.420 Allah sent to that town 00:06:22.420 --> 00:06:24.420 and the surrounding villages 00:06:24.420 --> 00:06:26.420 that shared in its sin— 00:06:26.420 --> 00:06:28.420 He sent to them three 00:06:28.420 --> 00:06:30.420 of the angels, 00:06:30.420 --> 00:06:32.420 namely Gabriel, Michael, 00:06:32.420 --> 00:06:34.420 and Israfil. 00:06:34.420 --> 00:06:36.420 They took the form of humans 00:06:36.420 --> 00:06:38.420 with handsome faces, 00:06:38.420 --> 00:06:40.420 and they headed first, 00:06:40.420 --> 00:06:42.420 by the command of Allah the Exalted, 00:06:42.420 --> 00:06:44.420 to Abraham in Palestine. 00:06:44.420 --> 00:06:46.420 They gave him and his wife Sarah the glad tidings 00:06:46.420 --> 00:06:48.420 that Allah would grant them 00:06:48.420 --> 00:06:50.420 Isaac, and after 00:06:50.420 --> 00:06:52.420 Isaac, Jacob, peace be upon them both. 00:06:54.610 --> 00:06:56.610 Then they informed him that they were sent 00:06:56.610 --> 00:06:58.610 from Allah Almighty to destroy 00:06:58.610 --> 00:07:00.670 the people of Lot. 00:07:00.670 --> 00:07:02.670 Thereupon, Abraham, peace be upon him, 00:07:02.670 --> 00:07:04.670 began to debate with them regarding this matter, 00:07:04.670 --> 00:07:06.670 and said to them: 00:07:06.670 --> 00:07:08.670 "Would you destroy a town in which there are 00:07:08.670 --> 00:07:10.670 fifty Muslims?" 00:07:10.670 --> 00:07:12.769 He asked: "Would you destroy 00:07:12.769 --> 00:07:14.769 a town in which there are 00:07:14.769 --> 00:07:16.769 forty Muslims?" 00:07:16.769 --> 00:07:18.930 They replied: "No." 00:07:18.930 --> 00:07:20.930 He asked: "Would you destroy 00:07:20.930 --> 00:07:22.930 a town in which there are ten 00:07:22.930 --> 00:07:25.019 Muslims?" 00:07:25.019 --> 00:07:27.089 They replied: "No." 00:07:27.089 --> 00:07:29.089 He asked: "Would you destroy 00:07:29.089 --> 00:07:31.089 a town in which there is a single Muslim?" 00:07:31.089 --> 00:07:33.180 They replied: "No." 00:07:33.180 --> 00:07:35.180 At that point, he said to them: 00:07:35.180 --> 00:07:37.180 "Indeed, within it is 00:07:37.180 --> 00:07:39.180 Lot, the Prophet of Allah 00:07:39.180 --> 00:07:41.310 and His Messenger." 00:07:41.310 --> 00:07:43.310 The angels said: 00:07:43.310 --> 00:07:45.310 “He said: Lo! Lot is there. They said: We are best aware of who is there. We are to deliver him and his household, all save his wife, who is of those who stay behind.” (29:32) 00:07:45.310 --> 00:07:47.310 "We shall surely save him 00:07:47.310 --> 00:07:49.310 and his family, except his wife; 00:07:49.310 --> 00:07:51.310 she is of those who are destined to perish." 00:07:51.310 --> 00:07:53.310 Then they said to him: 00:07:53.310 --> 00:07:55.310 "O Abraham, 00:07:55.310 --> 00:07:57.310 desist from this pleading, 00:07:57.310 --> 00:07:59.310 for indeed there has already come 00:07:59.310 --> 00:08:01.310 the decree of your Lord concerning them, 00:08:01.310 --> 00:08:03.310 and indeed there is coming upon them 00:08:03.310 --> 00:08:05.310 a punishment that cannot be averted." 00:08:05.310 --> 00:08:07.629 Allah Almighty says: 00:08:07.629 --> 00:08:09.629 "And when the fright had departed 00:08:09.629 --> 00:08:11.629 from Abraham 00:08:11.629 --> 00:08:13.629 and there had reached him 00:08:13.629 --> 00:08:15.629 the glad tidings, 00:08:15.629 --> 00:08:17.629 he began to plead with Us 00:08:17.629 --> 00:08:19.629 regarding the people of Lot. 00:08:19.629 --> 00:08:21.629 Indeed, 00:08:21.629 --> 00:08:23.629 Abraham was forbearing, 00:08:23.629 --> 00:08:25.629 tender-hearted, 00:08:25.629 --> 00:08:27.629 and ever turning to Allah. 00:08:27.629 --> 00:08:29.629 'O Abraham, 00:08:29.629 --> 00:08:31.629 desist from this! 00:08:31.629 --> 00:08:33.629 Indeed, 00:08:33.629 --> 00:08:35.629 there has already come 00:08:35.629 --> 00:08:37.629 the decree of your Lord, 00:08:37.629 --> 00:08:39.629 and indeed there is 00:08:39.629 --> 00:08:41.629 coming upon them a punishment 00:08:41.629 --> 00:08:43.629 that cannot be averted.'" 00:08:43.629 --> 00:08:47.259 The angels, 00:08:47.259 --> 00:08:49.259 the emissaries of Allah, departed 00:08:49.259 --> 00:08:51.259 towards Lot, peace be upon him. 00:08:51.259 --> 00:08:53.259 When they entered the town, 00:08:53.259 --> 00:08:55.259 they found his daughter 00:08:55.259 --> 00:08:57.259 drawing water. 00:08:57.259 --> 00:08:59.259 When she saw them, 00:08:59.259 --> 00:09:01.259 she said to them: "Who are you? 00:09:01.259 --> 00:09:03.259 Your appearance is unfamiliar 00:09:03.259 --> 00:09:05.259 in these lands." 00:09:05.259 --> 00:09:07.259 They said to her: 00:09:07.259 --> 00:09:09.330 "We are guests." 00:09:09.330 --> 00:09:11.330 She feared for them from the townspeople 00:09:11.330 --> 00:09:13.330 and said to them: 00:09:13.330 --> 00:09:15.330 "Do not leave your place 00:09:15.330 --> 00:09:17.330 until I return to you." 00:09:17.330 --> 00:09:19.330 So she went to her father 00:09:19.330 --> 00:09:21.330 and said: "O my father, 00:09:21.330 --> 00:09:23.330 I have seen men 00:09:23.330 --> 00:09:25.330 of handsome faces, 00:09:25.330 --> 00:09:27.330 who are not from this land, 00:09:27.330 --> 00:09:29.330 and I truly fear for them 00:09:29.330 --> 00:09:31.330 from our people, 00:09:31.330 --> 00:09:33.360 so attend to their matter." 00:09:33.360 --> 00:09:35.360 So Lot, peace be upon him, went to them, 00:09:35.360 --> 00:09:37.360 and when he saw them, 00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:39.360 he was troubled on their account 00:09:39.360 --> 00:09:41.360 and felt utter distress for them, 00:09:41.360 --> 00:09:43.360 and said to himself: 00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:45.360 "This is a distressing day." 00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:47.549 Even though this 00:09:47.549 --> 00:09:49.549 was not the usual manner of the prophets 00:09:49.549 --> 00:09:51.549 nor their custom with their guests, 00:09:51.549 --> 00:09:53.549 the situation confronting 00:09:53.549 --> 00:09:55.549 Lot, peace be upon him, 00:09:55.549 --> 00:09:57.549 was far graver than that; 00:09:57.549 --> 00:09:59.549 for he feared for them 00:09:59.549 --> 00:10:01.549 that their honor would be violated 00:10:01.549 --> 00:10:04.960 by its wrongdoing inhabitants. 00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:06.960 Lot, peace be upon him, took them 00:10:06.960 --> 00:10:08.960 to his home. 00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:10.960 But when his wife learned 00:10:10.960 --> 00:10:12.960 of their presence, she informed her people 00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:14.960 by kindling 00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:16.960 a fire in her house 00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:18.960 whose smoke billowed outside, 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:20.960 as a prearranged signal between her 00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:22.960 and her people indicating the presence 00:10:22.960 --> 00:10:24.960 of guests in their home. 00:10:24.960 --> 00:10:26.960 And this was her treachery 00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:28.960 toward her husband, as Allah mentioned 00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:30.960 in the Holy Qur'an. 00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:33.019 So the people of Lot came 00:10:33.019 --> 00:10:35.019 rushing toward him breathlessly, 00:10:35.019 --> 00:10:37.019 intending to seize the guests 00:10:37.019 --> 00:10:39.019 from him, as though 00:10:39.019 --> 00:10:41.019 they had stumbled upon 00:10:41.019 --> 00:10:43.120 a prized catch. Allah 00:10:43.120 --> 00:10:45.120 Almighty said: 00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:47.120 "And the people of 00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:49.120 the city came rejoicing. 00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:51.120 He said: 'Indeed, 00:10:51.120 --> 00:10:53.120 these are 00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:55.120 my guests, so do not 00:10:55.120 --> 00:10:57.120 disgrace me. 00:10:57.120 --> 00:10:59.120 And fear Allah 00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:01.120 and do not humiliate me.' 00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:03.120 They said: 'Have we not 00:11:03.120 --> 00:11:05.120 forbidden you from protecting people?' 00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:07.120 He said: 00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:09.120 'These are 00:11:09.120 --> 00:11:11.120 my daughters, if 00:11:11.120 --> 00:11:13.120 you must do so.' 00:11:13.120 --> 00:11:15.120 By your life, 00:11:15.120 --> 00:11:17.120 indeed they were, in 00:11:17.120 --> 00:11:19.120 their intoxication, wandering blindly." 00:11:19.120 --> 00:11:21.820 Perhaps 00:11:21.820 --> 00:11:23.820 the intention of Lot, peace be upon him, 00:11:23.820 --> 00:11:25.820 in saying "these are my daughters" 00:11:25.820 --> 00:11:27.820 “He said: Here are my daughters, if ye must be doing (so).” (15:71) 00:11:27.820 --> 00:11:29.820 — and Allah knows best — 00:11:29.820 --> 00:11:31.820 was to silence and incapacitate them with an impossible alternative; 00:12:42.210 --> 00:12:44.210 he was indeed taking refuge in a strong 00:12:44.210 --> 00:12:46.210 pillar" — 00:12:46.210 --> 00:12:49.419 meaning Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. 00:12:49.419 --> 00:12:51.419 These events were unfolding 00:12:51.419 --> 00:12:53.419 right before the eyes of the guests 00:12:53.419 --> 00:12:55.419 in complete serenity, 00:12:55.419 --> 00:12:57.419 indifferent to what was transpiring 00:12:57.419 --> 00:12:59.419 between Lot and his people. 00:12:59.419 --> 00:13:01.460 And when the matter reached 00:13:01.460 --> 00:13:03.460 its utmost limit 00:13:03.460 --> 00:13:05.460 and they saw the inability of Lot, peace be upon him, 00:13:05.460 --> 00:13:07.460 to confront his people, 00:13:07.460 --> 00:13:09.460 they said to him: 00:13:09.460 --> 00:13:11.460 "Be at ease, O Lot, 00:13:11.460 --> 00:13:13.460 for we are not mortals; 00:13:13.460 --> 00:13:15.460 we are the messengers of your Lord to you, 00:13:15.460 --> 00:13:17.460 and we are about to destroy the people of 00:13:17.460 --> 00:13:19.460 this town. 00:13:19.460 --> 00:13:21.460 These wicked people 00:13:21.460 --> 00:13:23.460 will never be able to harm you in any way. 00:13:23.460 --> 00:13:25.460 So do not fear 00:13:25.460 --> 00:13:27.460 and do not grieve, O Lot; 00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:45.840 So they began jostling one another, 00:13:45.840 --> 00:13:47.840 colliding with each other, 00:13:47.840 --> 00:13:49.840 not knowing where to go. 00:13:49.840 --> 00:13:51.840 Then they returned to their homes, 00:13:51.840 --> 00:13:53.840 threatening Lot, 00:13:53.840 --> 00:13:55.840 saying: 00:13:55.840 --> 00:13:57.840 "We will deal with you tomorrow." 00:13:57.840 --> 00:13:59.970 When things calmed down 00:13:59.970 --> 00:14:01.970 and the Prophet of Allah, 00:14:01.970 --> 00:14:03.970 Lot (peace be upon him), was reassured, 00:14:03.970 --> 00:14:05.970 the angels said to him: 00:14:05.970 --> 00:14:08.000 "When night falls, 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:10.000 set out with your family 00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:12.000 and leave this town, 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:14.000 and let none of you look back 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:16.000 at them when the punishment descends 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:18.000 upon them, 00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:20.000 for she will surely be struck 00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:22.000 by what strikes them." 00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:24.159 But Lot (peace be upon him) sought to hasten 00:14:24.159 --> 00:14:26.159 the punishment upon them, 00:14:26.159 --> 00:14:28.159 so the angels said to him: 00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:30.159 "Indeed, their appointed time 00:14:30.159 --> 00:14:32.159 is the morning. 00:14:32.159 --> 00:14:34.159 Is not the morning near, O Lot?" 00:14:34.159 --> 00:14:37.179 Lot (peace be upon him) set out 00:14:37.179 --> 00:14:39.179 with his daughters 00:14:39.179 --> 00:14:41.179 once darkness had fallen, 00:14:41.179 --> 00:14:43.179 while his wife refused to leave 00:14:43.179 --> 00:14:45.179 with them, 00:14:45.179 --> 00:14:47.179 choosing instead to remain with her people, 00:14:47.179 --> 00:14:49.179 because she adhered to their religion. 00:14:49.179 --> 00:14:51.220 Then, when the morning 00:14:51.220 --> 00:14:53.220 dawned, there came 00:14:53.220 --> 00:14:55.220 the command of Allah Almighty 00:14:55.220 --> 00:14:57.220 to destroy those wrongdoing towns. 00:14:57.220 --> 00:14:59.409 So Gabriel 00:14:59.409 --> 00:15:01.409 (peace be upon him) lifted them from the face 00:15:01.409 --> 00:15:03.409 of the earth on the tip of his wing, 00:15:03.409 --> 00:15:05.440 until he reached the heavens with them, 00:15:05.440 --> 00:15:07.440 and the dwellers of heaven heard 00:15:07.440 --> 00:15:09.440 the barking of dogs and the crowing 00:15:09.440 --> 00:15:11.440 of roosters. Then 00:15:11.440 --> 00:15:13.440 he turned them upside down, 00:15:13.440 --> 00:15:15.440 and Allah followed that up against them 00:15:15.440 --> 00:15:17.440 with stones from Hellfire, 00:15:17.440 --> 00:15:19.440 raining continuously upon them 00:15:19.440 --> 00:15:21.440 like a layered necklace, 00:15:21.440 --> 00:15:23.440 upon each stone 00:15:23.440 --> 00:15:25.440 being the name of the man at whom it was to be thrown. 00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:27.700 Allah Almighty said: 00:15:29.980 --> 00:15:31.980 "And when 00:15:31.980 --> 00:15:33.980 Our messengers came to Lot, 00:15:33.980 --> 00:15:35.980 he was distressed on their account 00:15:39.980 --> 00:15:41.980 and felt powerless to protect them, 00:15:41.980 --> 00:15:43.980 and said, 'This is a dreadful 00:15:43.980 --> 00:15:45.980 day.' 00:15:45.980 --> 00:15:47.980 And there came to him 00:15:47.980 --> 00:15:49.980 his people, rushing 00:15:49.980 --> 00:15:51.980 toward him; and before that, 00:15:51.980 --> 00:15:53.980 they had been committing 00:15:53.980 --> 00:15:55.980 evil deeds. 00:15:55.980 --> 00:15:57.980 He said, 'O my people, 00:15:57.980 --> 00:15:59.980 these are my daughters; 00:15:59.980 --> 00:16:01.980 they are purer 00:16:01.980 --> 00:16:03.980 for you. So fear 00:16:03.980 --> 00:16:05.980 Allah, and do not disgrace me 00:16:05.980 --> 00:16:07.980 concerning my guests. 00:16:07.980 --> 00:16:09.980 Is there not among you 00:16:09.980 --> 00:16:11.980 a single right-minded man?' 00:16:11.980 --> 00:16:13.980 They said, 'You have already 00:16:13.980 --> 00:16:15.980 known that we have no right to your daughters, 00:16:15.980 --> 00:16:17.980 “They said: Well thou knowest that we have no right to thy daughters, and well thou knowest what we want.” (11:79) 00:16:17.980 --> 00:16:19.980 and indeed you 00:16:19.980 --> 00:16:21.980 surely know what we want.' 00:16:21.980 --> 00:16:23.980 He said, 00:16:23.980 --> 00:16:25.980 “He said: Would that I had strength to resist you or had some strong support (among you)!” (11:80) 00:16:25.980 --> 00:16:27.980 'If only I had against you some power, or could take refuge 00:16:27.980 --> 00:16:29.980 in a strong 00:16:29.980 --> 00:16:31.980 support!' 00:16:31.980 --> 00:16:33.980 They said, 'O 00:16:33.980 --> 00:16:35.980 Lot, indeed we are 00:16:35.980 --> 00:16:37.980 messengers of your Lord; 00:16:37.980 --> 00:16:39.980 they will never reach you. 00:16:39.980 --> 00:16:41.980 So travel with your family 00:16:41.980 --> 00:16:43.980 in a portion 00:16:43.980 --> 00:16:45.980 of the night, 00:16:45.980 --> 00:16:47.980 and let not 00:16:47.980 --> 00:16:49.980 any of you look back— 00:16:49.980 --> 00:16:51.980 except your wife; 00:16:51.980 --> 00:16:54.019 indeed, there will strike her 00:16:54.019 --> 00:16:56.019 what strikes them. 00:16:56.019 --> 00:16:58.019 Indeed, 00:16:58.019 --> 00:17:00.019 their appointed time is the morning. 00:17:00.019 --> 00:17:02.019 Is not the morning 00:17:02.019 --> 00:17:04.019 near?' 00:17:04.019 --> 00:17:06.019 So when there came 00:17:06.019 --> 00:17:08.019 Our command, 00:17:08.019 --> 00:17:10.019 We made its highest part 00:17:10.019 --> 00:17:12.019 its lowest, 00:17:12.019 --> 00:17:14.019 We made its highest part 00:17:14.019 --> 00:17:16.019 its lowest, 00:17:16.019 --> 00:17:18.019 and rained upon it 00:17:18.019 --> 00:17:20.019 stones, 00:17:20.019 --> 00:17:22.019 and rained upon it stones 00:17:22.019 --> 00:17:24.019 of layered 00:17:24.019 --> 00:17:26.019 baked clay, 00:17:26.019 --> 00:17:28.019 marked 00:17:28.019 --> 00:17:30.019 in the presence of your Lord. 00:17:30.019 --> 00:17:32.180 And it is not 00:17:32.180 --> 00:17:34.180 from the wrongdoers 00:17:34.180 --> 00:17:36.180 far off." 00:17:36.180 --> 00:17:39.809 Allah Almighty has mentioned 00:17:39.809 --> 00:17:41.809 Lot (peace be upon him) 00:17:41.809 --> 00:17:43.809 in the Qur'an twenty-seven times, 00:17:43.809 --> 00:17:45.809 and there were mentioned 00:17:45.809 --> 00:17:47.809 the events of his story with his people 00:17:47.809 --> 00:17:49.809 in more than one surah. 00:17:49.809 --> 00:17:51.940 Among the most important lessons derived 00:17:51.940 --> 00:17:53.940 from the story of the Prophet of Allah, 00:17:53.940 --> 00:17:55.940 Lot (peace be upon him), are: 00:17:55.940 --> 00:17:57.940 First: 00:17:57.940 --> 00:17:59.940 The heinousness of the crime of the people 00:17:59.940 --> 00:18:01.940 of Lot, 00:18:01.940 --> 00:18:03.940 and that it is the sin at which 00:18:03.940 --> 00:18:05.940 the Throne of the Most Merciful shakes due to its enormity, 00:18:05.940 --> 00:18:08.480 and Allah's refuge is sought from it. 00:18:08.480 --> 00:18:10.480 Second: 00:18:10.480 --> 00:18:12.480 When human nature is perverted, 00:18:12.480 --> 00:18:14.480 it perceives the repulsive as good, 00:18:14.480 --> 00:18:16.480 and a crime becomes to it 00:18:16.480 --> 00:18:19.119 something customary. 00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:21.119 Third: 00:18:21.119 --> 00:18:23.119 The collapse of morals 00:18:23.119 --> 00:18:25.119 is the cause of the destruction of societies, 00:18:25.119 --> 00:18:27.119 as it has been said: 00:18:27.119 --> 00:18:29.119 "Nations endure only as long as their morals remain; 00:18:29.119 --> 00:18:31.119 if their morals 00:18:31.119 --> 00:18:33.119 depart, they depart as well." 00:18:33.119 --> 00:18:35.539 Fourth: 00:18:35.539 --> 00:18:37.539 The people of Lot 00:18:37.539 --> 00:18:39.539 were the first to innovate the obscene act 00:18:39.539 --> 00:18:41.539 of approaching males, 00:18:41.539 --> 00:18:43.539 so upon them is its burden and the burden of everyone 00:18:43.539 --> 00:18:45.539 who practices it after them. 00:18:45.539 --> 00:18:47.539 Allah Almighty said regarding them: 00:18:47.539 --> 00:18:49.539 "Indeed, you commit 00:18:49.539 --> 00:18:51.539 an immorality such as 00:18:51.539 --> 00:18:53.539 no one has preceded you in doing 00:18:53.539 --> 00:18:56.140 among all the worlds." 00:18:56.140 --> 00:18:58.140 Fifth: 00:18:58.140 --> 00:19:00.140 The generosity of the prophets (peace be upon them), 00:19:00.140 --> 00:19:02.140 their care for their guests, 00:19:02.140 --> 00:19:04.140 and their defense of them; 00:19:04.140 --> 00:19:06.140 and Lot (peace be upon him) 00:19:06.140 --> 00:19:08.140 is an exemplar of that. 00:19:08.140 --> 00:19:10.690 Sixth: 00:19:10.690 --> 00:19:12.690 A wife has no true bond 00:19:12.690 --> 00:19:14.690 with her husband if she follows 00:19:14.690 --> 00:19:16.690 a religion that opposes his religion. 00:19:16.690 --> 00:19:19.680 Seventh: 00:19:19.680 --> 00:19:21.680 It is not permissible for us to name 00:19:21.680 --> 00:19:23.680 this obscenity—which 00:19:23.680 --> 00:19:25.680 is the attraction to males— 00:19:25.680 --> 00:19:27.680 "liwat," 00:19:27.680 --> 00:19:29.680 nor is it permissible for us to call the man 00:19:29.680 --> 00:19:31.680 who commits this obscenity 00:19:31.680 --> 00:19:33.680 a "luti," 00:19:33.680 --> 00:19:35.680 because the name of Lot 00:19:35.680 --> 00:19:37.680 is a noble name, 00:19:37.680 --> 00:19:39.680 carrying the meaning of a reformer, 00:19:39.680 --> 00:19:41.680 while the root "al-liwat" signifies 00:19:41.680 --> 00:19:43.740 mending and plastering. 00:19:43.740 --> 00:19:45.740 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) informed us 00:19:45.740 --> 00:19:47.740 that when the Hour 00:19:47.740 --> 00:19:49.740 is established, 00:19:49.740 --> 00:19:51.740 the first person to be struck down 00:19:51.740 --> 00:19:53.740 will be a man plastering his water basin— 00:19:53.740 --> 00:19:55.809 that is, repairing his basin. 00:19:55.809 --> 00:19:57.809 Furthermore, 00:19:57.809 --> 00:19:59.809 it is not permissible to attribute this act 00:19:59.809 --> 00:20:01.809 to Lot (peace be upon him); 00:20:01.809 --> 00:20:03.809 the term "luti" 00:20:03.809 --> 00:20:05.809 derives from Lot (peace be upon him), 00:20:05.809 --> 00:20:07.809 and Lot (peace be upon him) 00:20:07.809 --> 00:20:09.809 is entirely innocent of it. 00:20:09.809 --> 00:20:11.809 How then could someone who commits 00:20:11.809 --> 00:20:13.809 this heinous act be attributed to him? 00:20:13.809 --> 00:20:15.809 Rather, we should name it as 00:20:15.809 --> 00:20:17.809 the Prophet (peace be upon him) named it, 00:20:17.809 --> 00:20:19.809 saying: 00:20:19.809 --> 00:20:21.809 "the act of the people of Lot," 00:20:21.809 --> 00:20:23.809 or saying: 00:20:23.809 --> 00:20:25.809 "that man 00:20:25.809 --> 00:20:28.480 commits the act of the people of Lot." 00:20:28.480 --> 00:20:30.480 Eighth: 00:20:30.480 --> 00:20:32.480 Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah transmitted 00:20:32.480 --> 00:20:34.480 the consensus of the Companions and others 00:20:34.480 --> 00:20:36.480 that whoever commits this act 00:20:36.480 --> 00:20:38.480 is to be executed, 00:20:38.480 --> 00:20:40.480 Even though they differed 00:20:40.480 --> 00:20:42.509 over the manner of execution: 00:20:42.509 --> 00:20:44.509 Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, 00:20:44.509 --> 00:20:46.509 may Allah be pleased with him, said 00:20:46.509 --> 00:20:48.509 that he is to be thrown from a high cliff, 00:20:48.509 --> 00:20:50.509 just as was done to the people of Lot; 00:20:50.509 --> 00:20:52.509 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said 00:20:52.509 --> 00:20:54.509 that a wall should be collapsed upon him; 00:20:54.509 --> 00:20:56.509 and Ibn 'Abbas, 00:20:56.509 --> 00:20:58.509 may Allah be pleased with them both, said 00:20:58.509 --> 00:21:00.509 that he is to be stoned to death with rocks— 00:21:00.509 --> 00:21:02.509 both the active and passive partners— 00:21:02.509 --> 00:21:04.509 just as is done in the case of adultery. 00:21:04.509 --> 00:21:06.509 We seek refuge in Allah from this. 00:21:06.509 --> 00:21:08.930 Ninth: 00:21:08.930 --> 00:21:10.930 When matters become severely constricted, 00:21:10.930 --> 00:21:12.930 relief arrives 00:21:12.930 --> 00:21:14.930 from Allah, the Most High, the All-Powerful. 00:21:14.930 --> 00:21:16.930 And Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, 00:21:16.930 --> 00:21:18.930 never abandons His allies;
