A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions and among the leaders of the Ansar.
I was a leader of the Aws tribe in Yathrib before Islam.
I was among those of sound judgment and influence among them.
I was one of the great nobles of the Arabs during the Age of Ignorance.
And one of their fierce warriors.
I possessed a clear mind and a strong personality.
And I was a man of keen insight.
I was one of the twelve leaders at the night of al-Aqaba.
I regretted missing the Battle of Badr.
When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, returned from the battle,
I said to him,
"O Messenger of Allah,
Praise be to Allah who granted you victory,
And brought joy to your eyes.
By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,
My absence from Badr was not because
I thought you were meeting an enemy;
Rather, I thought it was only the caravan.
Had I known it was an enemy, I would not have stayed behind."
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me,
"You have spoken the truth."
I then witnessed all the battles with him.
I sustained seven wounds on the day of Uhud.
When Mus'ab ibn Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him, came to Medina,
Sa'd ibn Mu'adh said to me,
"Go to this young man from Mecca,
And forbid him from approaching our gatherings."
I took my spear and went to him.
I said to him,
"If you value your own life,
Then stay away from us."
Mus'ab said to me,
"Will you not sit and listen?
If it is good, you may accept it;
And if it is otherwise,
I shall refrain from what you dislike."
I said to him, "You have been fair."
I planted my spear and sat down.
He recited some of the Qur'an to me,
And no sooner had his words touched my ears
Than my heart expanded,
My facial expression changed,
And I entered into Islam.
Ever since my conversion,
My heart has been attached to the love of the Qur'an.
I used to recite it with a beautiful voice.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, heard
My recitation one day,
And said,
"You have been given a flute
From the flutes of the family of David."
One night, I was reciting Surah al-Baqarah,
While my horse was tied in the courtyard of the house,
And my son was sleeping nearby.
The horse became agitated,
So I stopped,
And the horse calmed down.
I resumed the recitation,
And it became agitated a second time.
I stopped,
And it calmed down.
I feared for my son that the horse might trample him,
So I ceased the recitation.
Then I looked up at the sky,
And saw something like a cloud
With lamps in its center,
Rising into the sky
Until it disappeared from my sight.
When morning came,
I informed the Prophet, peace be upon him,
And he said,
"Those were the angels
Who descended to listen to your recitation.
Had you continued,
People would have seen them in the morning,
And they would not have been hidden from them."
I used to strive to serve the needy among the Muslims.
I once came to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
And mentioned to him the need of a family consisting mostly of women.
He said to me,
"When food comes to us,
Remind me of them."
When food was brought to him,
I reminded him,
And he gave them a generous portion.
I said to him,
"May Allah reward you, O Prophet of Allah,
With the best of rewards."
He replied,
"And you, O people of the Ansar,
May Allah reward you with the best of rewards.
For you are, as you have known,
Chaste and patient.
You will see selfishness after me,
So be patient until you meet me at the Basin."
