A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
I am a poet among the elite of the veteran poets.
Indeed, I am one of the authors of the Mu'allaqat.
My poetry was filled with wisdom.
I was known for my horsemanship and bravery.
I was famous for my oratory skills and eloquence.
I was among the nobility of the people both in the Jahiliyyah and in Islam.
The Mother of the Believers, ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated from me.
About a thousand verses of poetry.
I stood with my people before the Prophet, peace be upon him, before the Conquest of Makkah.
And I embraced Islam along with them.
Although I was one of the greatest poets,
I did not compose poetry after embracing Islam.
For Allah, the Exalted, replaced it for me with the Qur'an.
And I found the Qur'an sufficient, replacing the need for poetry.
I did not compose more than a single verse in Islam.
And this verse is:
"No one reproaches a noble, honorable man like his own self,"
"And a man is set right by a righteous companion."
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, supported me,
regarding some of my poetry.
He said, "The truest word ever spoken by a poet is:"
"Indeed, everything except Allah is false."
And that is from my own composition.
‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, sent word,
to his governor in Kufa,
requesting that he send for me,
so that I might write down some of my poetry for him.
I said to him, "If you wish, I will recite to you from the poetry of the Jahiliyyah."
He replied, "No, rather from what you composed in Islam."
So I wrote down Surah al-Baqarah for him,
and sent it to him.
I said, "Allah has replaced poetry for me in Islam with this Surah."
