First, eliciting the servant’s devotion to Allah—mighty and majestic is He—during adversity, through the manifestation of his brokenness and need for his Lord, and his persistence in supplication for the removal of his distress.

Fourth, trial provides an opportunity for the afflicted caller to re-examine the methodologies and perceptions he adopts, and to purify them from any flaws or errors that may have tainted them.

Fifth, the brokenness of the soul caused by trial, and its turning in tranquility toward its Lord, serves as a remedy for the ailments of arrogance, vanity, and haughtiness that may afflict it.

Sixth, the believer’s trial through the various forms of torment inflicted upon him by his enemy, such as imprisonment, physical and psychological torture, mockery, and derision.

All of this serves to break the barrier of fear within the believer regarding these ordeals before he even encounters them, and it assists him in remaining steadfast in his call—the call to truth and success.

It goes without saying that these instances of wisdom and benefits are only attained through Allah—mighty and majestic is He—granting steadfastness to those whom He knows are deserving of it, due to their inherent readiness to accept the truth and guidance, as we have clarified in the Sunnah of guidance and misguidance.
