A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, from the Ansar.
I embraced Islam as soon as it entered Medina.
I went out with the Prophet, peace be upon him, on the expedition of Badr.
But I broke my leg at al-Rawha'.
So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, sent me back to Medina.
Yet he assigned me my share and my reward from the spoils of Badr.
So I was like one who had witnessed it.
I witnessed the Battle of Uhud with the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I stood firm with him that day when the people retreated.
I pledged allegiance to him unto death.
On that day, I killed ‘Uthman ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah.
And I took his spoils of war.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, gave me those spoils.
He did not give the spoils to anyone else that day but me.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, asked me on the day of Uhud while he was in the mountain pass.
He said, "Have you seen ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf?"
I said, "Yes, I saw him near the mountain."
"And there was a troop of polytheists upon him."
"I hurried toward him to defend him."
"But then I saw you, so I turned toward you."
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
"Indeed, the angels are defending him."
So I returned to ‘Abd al-Rahman.
I found seven men of the polytheists lying dead before him.
I said to him, "May your right hand be blessed."
"Did you kill all of these?"
He said, "As for this one,"
"He was killed by Arta ibn Sharhabil, may Allah be pleased with him."
"And these two, I killed them."
"But as for these others,"
"They were killed by someone I did not see."
I said, "The Messenger of Allah spoke the truth."
On the day of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, kept saying:
"What has become of my uncle? What has become of Hamzah?"
So I went out searching for him.
I found him killed, and his body had been mutilated.
I stood over him, deeply affected.
I could not move out of grief for him.
And what would I say to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him?
I delayed returning to him.
Then ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, came.
He found me, and he found Hamzah killed beside me.
He took my hand.
We returned and informed the Prophet, peace be upon him, of his death.
Then I witnessed the event of Bi'r Ma'unah.
I was killed on that day.
I was with ‘Amr ibn Umayyah, may Allah be pleased with him, tending the livestock.
We saw birds circling over the camp of our companions.
We went to them.
And behold, they were all killed.
I said to ‘Amr,
"What do you think?"
He said, "I think we should join the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and inform him."
I said,
"I would not stay behind from a place where my companions were killed."
So I rushed after the polytheists until I caught up with them.
I fought them until I was killed.
