WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:07.599 A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari. 00:00:07.599 --> 00:00:12.789 Abridged by Dr. 'Aqil ibn Salim al-Shammari. 00:00:12.789 --> 00:00:15.910 Surah al-Buruj. 00:00:15.910 --> 00:00:22.660 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:00:22.660 --> 00:00:28.660 By the sky containing constellations. 00:00:28.660 --> 00:00:31.660 And by the promised day. 00:00:31.660 --> 00:00:35.659 And by a witness and what is witnessed. 00:00:35.659 --> 00:00:41.689 Allah, whose praise is exalted, swears by the sky, which contains the stations of the sun and the moon. 00:00:41.689 --> 00:00:43.689 And He, the Exalted, says: 00:00:43.689 --> 00:00:48.689 And He swears by the day He has promised His servants for the final judgment between them. 00:00:48.689 --> 00:00:51.689 That is the Day of Resurrection. 00:00:51.689 --> 00:00:54.719 And Allah swears by a witness and what is witnessed. 00:00:54.719 --> 00:00:56.719 Some have said: 00:00:56.719 --> 00:00:58.719 The witness is the day of Jumu'ah (Friday). 00:00:58.719 --> 00:01:01.719 And what is witnessed is the day of 'Arafah. 00:01:01.719 --> 00:01:03.719 Others have said: 00:01:03.719 --> 00:01:05.719 The witness is Muhammad, peace be upon him. 00:01:05.719 --> 00:01:07.719 And what is witnessed is the Day of Resurrection. 00:01:07.719 --> 00:01:09.719 Others have said: 00:01:09.719 --> 00:01:11.719 The witness is man. 00:01:11.719 --> 00:01:13.719 And what is witnessed is the Day of Resurrection. 00:01:13.719 --> 00:01:15.719 Others have said: 00:01:15.719 --> 00:01:17.719 The witness is Allah. 00:01:17.719 --> 00:01:19.719 And what is witnessed is the Day of Resurrection. 00:01:19.719 --> 00:01:21.719 Others have said: 00:01:21.719 --> 00:01:23.719 The witness is the day of al-Adha. 00:01:23.719 --> 00:01:25.719 And what is witnessed is the day of 'Arafah. 00:01:25.719 --> 00:01:27.750 Everything the scholars have mentioned 00:01:27.750 --> 00:01:29.750 is of that which deserves 00:01:29.750 --> 00:01:34.750 to be called a witness and what is witnessed. 00:01:34.750 --> 00:01:39.780 Cursed were the companions of the trench. 00:01:39.780 --> 00:01:43.780 The fire full of fuel. 00:01:43.780 --> 00:01:47.780 “When they sat by it,” (85:6) 00:01:47.780 --> 00:01:53.780 “And were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers.” (85:7) 00:01:53.780 --> 00:02:01.780 “They had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise,” (85:8) 00:02:01.780 --> 00:02:06.780 To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. 00:02:06.780 --> 00:02:13.669 And Allah is Witness over all things. 00:02:13.669 --> 00:02:15.669 Cursed were the companions of the trench. 00:02:15.669 --> 00:02:19.669 Those who cast the believing men and women into the trench. 00:02:19.669 --> 00:02:23.669 And the companions of the fire, full of fuel, were destroyed. 00:02:23.669 --> 00:02:26.669 For these disbelievers among the companions of the trench 00:02:26.669 --> 00:02:29.669 were sitting on the edge of the trench. 00:02:29.669 --> 00:02:33.669 And the disbelievers were witnesses to what they did to the believers. 00:02:33.669 --> 00:02:38.669 And they did not do to them what they did except because they believed in Allah. 00:02:38.669 --> 00:02:42.669 The Severe in retribution against those who take vengeance upon Him. 00:02:42.669 --> 00:02:45.669 The Praiseworthy for His benevolence toward His creation. 00:02:45.669 --> 00:02:50.669 To whom belongs the sovereignty of the seven heavens, the earths, and all that is within them. 00:02:50.669 --> 00:02:54.669 And Allah is a witness to the deeds of these disbelievers. 00:02:54.669 --> 00:03:03.469 “Lo! they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning.” (85:10) 00:03:03.469 --> 00:03:12.469 “Lo! they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning.” (85:10) 00:03:12.469 --> 00:03:19.020 Indeed, those who afflicted the believing men and women in Allah by torturing them with fire, 00:03:19.020 --> 00:03:22.020 then did not repent from their disbelief and their actions, 00:03:22.020 --> 00:03:25.020 for them is the punishment of Hell in the Hereafter. 00:03:25.020 --> 00:03:28.020 And for them is the punishment of the burning fire in this world. 00:03:28.020 --> 00:03:37.780 Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens. 00:03:37.780 --> 00:03:44.780 They will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. 00:03:44.780 --> 00:03:49.780 That is the great attainment. 00:03:49.780 --> 00:03:54.550 Indeed, those who affirmed the oneness of Allah and acted in obedience to Him 00:03:54.550 --> 00:03:58.550 will have in the Hereafter gardens beneath which rivers flow. 00:03:58.550 --> 00:04:01.550 And this is the great triumph. 00:04:01.550 --> 00:04:07.960 “Lo! the punishment of thy Lord is stern.” (85:12) 00:04:07.960 --> 00:04:12.960 “Lo! He it is Who produceth, then reproduceth,” (85:13) 00:04:12.960 --> 00:04:16.959 And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate. 00:04:16.959 --> 00:04:19.959 The Owner of the Glorious Throne. 00:04:19.959 --> 00:04:24.959 The Accomplisher of what He intends. 00:04:25.959 --> 00:04:31.629 Indeed, the grip of your Lord, O Muhammad, upon those of His creation whom He seizes 00:04:31.629 --> 00:04:35.629 —that is, His retribution against those who take vengeance upon Him—is severe. 00:04:35.629 --> 00:04:39.629 Indeed, Allah initiates the punishment for the people of disbelief in this world, 00:04:39.629 --> 00:04:42.629 and He will repeat it for them in the Hereafter. 00:04:42.629 --> 00:04:46.629 And He is the Possessor of forgiveness for those who repent, and the Possessor of love for them. 00:04:46.629 --> 00:04:49.629 The Owner of the Noble Throne. 00:04:49.629 --> 00:04:53.629 No obstacle can prevent Him from doing what He intends to do. 00:04:54.629 --> 00:04:59.459 “Hath there come unto thee the story of the hosts” (85:17) 00:04:59.459 --> 00:05:03.459 Pharaoh and Thamud. 00:05:03.459 --> 00:05:07.459 Rather, those who disbelieved are in denial. 00:05:07.459 --> 00:05:14.459 “And Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them.” (85:20) 00:05:14.459 --> 00:05:19.459 But it is a glorious Qur'an. 00:05:19.459 --> 00:05:24.459 In a Preserved Tablet. 00:05:24.459 --> 00:05:28.810 Has there reached you, O Muhammad, the story of the hosts? 00:05:28.810 --> 00:05:33.810 Those who gathered against Allah and His Messenger with their harm and malice. 00:05:33.810 --> 00:05:36.810 They are Pharaoh, his people, and Thamud. 00:05:36.810 --> 00:05:39.810 The consequence for those who do not believe you 00:05:39.810 --> 00:05:43.810 is like the destruction and ruin that befell these hosts. 00:05:43.810 --> 00:05:47.870 What is the matter with these people who deny the promise of Allah? 00:05:47.870 --> 00:05:51.870 It is not that the news of those who came before them from the nations has not reached them. 00:05:51.870 --> 00:05:55.870 Rather, they are in denial of the revelation of Allah and His descent. 00:05:55.870 --> 00:06:00.870 And Allah is encompassing them from behind, recording their deeds. 00:06:00.870 --> 00:06:04.870 Then He, whose praise is exalted, refutes those who say of the Qur'an: 00:06:04.870 --> 00:06:06.870 "It is poetry and rhymed prose." 00:06:06.870 --> 00:06:08.870 It is not as they say. 00:06:08.870 --> 00:06:10.870 Rather, it is a noble Qur'an. 00:06:10.870 --> 00:06:18.870 Preserved in a Tablet, protected from any addition or subtraction from what Allah has established within it.
