00:01:02.460 --> 00:01:06.459 I believe him concerning revelations from heaven coming morning or evening." 00:01:06.459 --> 00:01:10.129 For this reason, he was thereafter named "al-Siddiq" (the Champion of Truth). 00:01:10.129 --> 00:01:13.129 Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, was born 00:01:13.129 --> 00:01:16.129 Two years after the Year of the Elephant. 00:01:16.129 --> 00:01:18.129 He grew up in Mecca, 00:01:18.129 --> 00:01:22.129 Raised among its mountains, mountain passes, and valleys, 00:01:22.129 --> 00:01:25.129 Drawing deeply from the noble virtues of its people— 00:01:25.129 --> 00:01:27.129 A culture of immense generosity and magnanimity, 00:01:27.129 --> 00:01:31.260 And competing to serve the guests of the Ancient House (the Ka'bah). 00:01:31.260 --> 00:01:33.260 In his youth, he befriended 00:01:33.260 --> 00:01:36.260 His peers among the nobles and leaders of Quraysh, 00:01:36.260 --> 00:01:39.260 Foremost among them being Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah, 00:01:39.260 --> 00:01:42.260 The pride of Quraysh and its most trustworthy man. 00:01:42.260 --> 00:01:46.260 The qualities of chivalry and noble character were deeply imprinted in both of them, 00:01:46.260 --> 00:01:49.260 As though they had nursed from the very same breast 00:01:49.260 --> 00:01:52.260 And had been raised in the very same household. 00:01:52.260 --> 00:01:55.260 They were the most chaste of Quraysh during the pre-Islamic era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah): 00:01:55.260 --> 00:01:57.260 Neither of them ever drank wine, 00:01:57.260 --> 00:01:59.260 Nor did either ever bow to an idol, 00:01:59.260 --> 00:02:02.260 Nor was a single lie or act of betrayal ever recorded against either of them. 00:02:02.260 --> 00:02:04.260 And that is no surprise, 00:02:04.260 --> 00:02:06.680 For a person is judged by the company he keeps. 00:02:06.680 --> 00:02:08.680 Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, was 00:02:08.680 --> 00:02:11.680 A noble and chivalrous merchant in his trade, 00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:14.680 Deeply knowledgeable in Arab genealogies and history, 00:02:14.680 --> 00:02:16.680 Delightful in company, 00:02:16.680 --> 00:02:18.680 A man who endeared himself to others and was easily loved, 00:02:18.680 --> 00:02:20.680 Extremely modest, 00:02:20.680 --> 00:02:22.680 Abundantly humble, 00:02:22.680 --> 00:02:23.680 Vast in knowledge, 00:02:23.680 --> 00:02:26.680 And a chief of his clan, the Banu Taym. 00:02:26.680 --> 00:02:28.680 It was even said of him: 00:02:28.680 --> 00:02:33.680 "Prestige and nobility in Quraysh culminated in ten individuals from ten clans, 00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:36.680 Among them Abu Bakr from Banu Taym." 00:02:36.680 --> 00:02:42.000 Because of his close bond with the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his proximity to him, 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:45.000 He did not hesitate for a single moment in following him. 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:48.000 Thus, he was the first among free adult men to embrace Islam. 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:51.000 He supported him with the dearest of his wealth, 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:54.000 Ransomed him with his own life and family, 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:57.000 And withheld nothing whatsoever from him. 00:02:57.000 --> 00:03:02.189 The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to dispose of Abu Bakr's wealth 00:03:02.189 --> 00:03:04.189 Just as he disposed of his own wealth. 00:03:04.189 --> 00:03:06.189 He once said: 00:03:06.189 --> 00:03:08.189 "No wealth has ever benefited me 00:03:08.189 --> 00:03:11.189 As much as the wealth of Abu Bakr has benefited me." 00:03:11.189 --> 00:03:15.189 Thereupon, Abu Bakr wept and said, 00:03:15.189 --> 00:03:19.189 "Are my wealth and I anything but yours, O Messenger of Allah?" 00:03:19.189 --> 00:03:21.509 On another occasion, he gave all his wealth in charity, 00:03:21.509 --> 00:03:25.509 So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, asked him, 00:03:25.509 --> 00:03:28.509 "What have you left for your family, O Abu Bakr?" 00:03:28.509 --> 00:03:32.509 He replied, "I have left them Allah and His Messenger." 00:03:32.509 --> 00:03:35.639 The Prophet, peace be upon him, also said: 00:03:35.639 --> 00:03:37.639 "There is no one who has done us a favor 00:03:37.639 --> 00:03:39.639 Except that we have repaid it, 00:03:39.639 --> 00:03:41.639 Save for Abu Bakr; 00:03:41.639 --> 00:03:44.639 For he has done us favors 00:03:44.639 --> 00:03:47.639 Which Allah will repay him for on the Day of Resurrection." 00:03:47.639 --> 00:03:49.639 Allah the Exalted revealed concerning him: 00:03:49.639 --> 00:03:53.919 "And the most God-fearing will be spared from it— 00:03:53.919 --> 00:03:57.919 He who gives his wealth to purify himself," 00:03:57.919 --> 00:04:03.919 “And none hath with him any favour for reward,” (92:19) 00:04:03.919 --> 00:04:09.919 “Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High.” (92:20) 00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:12.919 "And he will surely be well-pleased." 00:04:12.919 --> 00:04:16.079 Al-Siddiq was persecuted for the sake of Allah 00:04:16.079 --> 00:04:19.079 Just as the early Muslims were persecuted. 00:04:19.079 --> 00:04:21.079 He was once severely beaten, 00:04:21.079 --> 00:04:23.079 Trampled underfoot, 00:04:23.079 --> 00:04:26.079 And struck across his face with coarse, patched leather sandals 00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:30.079 Until his nose could no longer be distinguished from his face. 00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:32.079 Then the Banu Taym came 00:04:32.079 --> 00:04:34.079 And drove the polytheists away from him, 00:04:34.079 --> 00:04:36.079 Carrying him to his home 00:04:36.079 --> 00:04:39.079 Having no doubt that he was dying. 00:04:39.079 --> 00:04:41.110 When he finally regained consciousness, 00:04:41.110 --> 00:04:43.110 The very first words he uttered were: 00:04:43.110 --> 00:04:47.110 "How is the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him?" 00:04:47.110 --> 00:04:48.110 They said, 00:04:48.110 --> 00:04:51.110 "He is safe in Dar al-Arqam." 00:04:51.110 --> 00:04:52.110 He said, 00:04:52.110 --> 00:04:56.110 "By Allah, I will taste no food and drink no drink 00:04:56.110 --> 00:05:00.110 Until I go to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him." 00:05:00.110 --> 00:05:02.110 So he was carried to him, 00:05:02.110 --> 00:05:05.110 And when the Prophet, peace be upon him, saw him, 00:05:05.110 --> 00:05:08.110 He felt profound compassion and tenderness for him, 00:05:08.110 --> 00:05:10.110 Leaned over him and began kissing him, 00:05:10.110 --> 00:05:13.110 And the Muslims gathered around him doing likewise. 00:05:13.110 --> 00:05:17.360 When the persecution of the polytheists intensified against the Muslims, 00:05:17.360 --> 00:05:20.360 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, granted them permission 00:05:20.360 --> 00:05:22.360 To emigrate to Abyssinia, 00:05:22.360 --> 00:05:24.360 And later to Medina. 00:05:24.360 --> 00:05:27.360 Yet al-Siddiq did not emigrate with those who left; 00:05:27.360 --> 00:05:31.360 Rather, he stayed behind with the Beloved, peace be upon him, 00:05:31.360 --> 00:05:34.360 Until he earned the noble title of "the second of the two": 00:05:34.360 --> 00:05:38.360 “If ye help him not, still Allah helped him when those who disbelieve drove him forth, the second of two; when they two were in the cave, when he said unto his comrade: Grieve not. 00:06:48.970 --> 00:06:52.970 Rather, he feared anything that might cause him the slightest harm, 00:06:52.970 --> 00:06:55.970 Even the scorching heat of the sun or creeping vermin. 00:06:55.970 --> 00:06:58.259 In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is recorded that 00:06:58.259 --> 00:07:03.259 The sun beat down upon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:07:03.259 --> 00:07:07.259 So Abu Bakr stepped forward and shaded him with his cloak. 00:07:07.259 --> 00:07:09.389 And in Sahih Muslim, 00:07:09.389 --> 00:07:12.389 Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 00:07:12.389 --> 00:07:14.389 "Sleep, O Messenger of Allah, 00:07:14.389 --> 00:07:17.389 While I keep watch and clear the area around you." 00:07:17.389 --> 00:07:21.550 So the Prophet slept, and Abu Bakr went out clearing the surroundings for him. 00:07:21.550 --> 00:07:25.550 Al-Hakim narrated that when they reached the Cave of Thawr, 00:07:25.550 --> 00:07:29.550 Abu Bakr said, "Stay in your place, O Messenger of Allah, 00:07:29.550 --> 00:07:31.550 Until I inspect and secure the cave for you." 00:07:31.550 --> 00:07:33.550 And he thoroughly inspected and cleared it. 00:07:33.550 --> 00:07:37.550 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say: 00:07:37.550 --> 00:07:41.550 "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, that single night 00:07:41.550 --> 00:07:43.550 Is better than the entire family of 'Umar." 00:07:43.550 --> 00:07:48.769 Among the beautiful accounts brimming with love and esteem 00:07:48.769 --> 00:07:50.769 Is what has been narrated that Abu al-Bara' 00:07:50.769 --> 00:07:53.769 Asked al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with them both: 00:07:53.769 --> 00:07:58.769 "What did you and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, do 00:07:58.769 --> 00:08:00.769 When you set out from Mecca 00:08:00.769 --> 00:08:02.769 While the polytheists were pursuing you?" 00:08:02.769 --> 00:08:04.769 Abu Bakr said: 00:08:04.769 --> 00:08:06.769 "We departed from Mecca 00:08:06.769 --> 00:08:10.769 And traveled throughout our night and the following day until noon, 00:08:10.769 --> 00:08:12.769 When the midday heat reached its peak— 00:08:12.769 --> 00:08:14.769 That is, the heat became intense. 00:08:14.769 --> 00:08:16.839 I cast my eyes around, 00:08:16.839 --> 00:08:19.839 Looking for any shade where we could take shelter, 00:08:19.839 --> 00:08:21.839 When suddenly I saw a large rock. 00:08:21.839 --> 00:08:24.839 I went over to it and found a patch of shade beside it, 00:08:24.839 --> 00:08:25.839 So I leveled the ground, 00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:29.839 Spread out a resting place for the Prophet, peace be upon him, upon it, 00:08:29.839 --> 00:08:31.839 And then said to him, 00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:33.840 'Lie down to rest, O Prophet of Allah.' 00:08:33.840 --> 00:08:37.840 So the Prophet, peace be upon him, lay down, 00:08:37.840 --> 00:08:40.840 And I went off to inspect the surroundings, 00:08:40.840 --> 00:08:43.840 Looking to see if any pursuers were in sight. 00:08:43.840 --> 00:08:47.840 Suddenly, I came upon a shepherd herding his sheep toward the rock, 00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:50.840 Seeking from it the very same shade we had sought. 00:08:50.840 --> 00:08:52.840 I inquired of him and asked, 00:08:52.840 --> 00:08:54.840 'To whom do you belong, young man?' 00:08:54.840 --> 00:08:57.840 He replied, 'To a man from Quraysh,' 00:08:57.840 --> 00:08:59.840 Naming him, and I recognized him. 00:08:59.840 --> 00:09:03.840 I asked, 'Do your sheep have any milk?' 00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:04.840 He said, 'Yes.' 00:09:04.840 --> 00:09:08.840 I asked, 'Will you milk some for us?' 00:09:08.840 --> 00:09:09.840 He said, 'Yes.' 00:09:09.840 --> 00:09:13.840 So I instructed him, and he held one of his ewes firmly by the leg; 00:09:13.840 --> 00:09:16.840 I then told him to dust off her udder, 00:09:16.840 --> 00:09:19.840 And I told him to dust off his hands." 00:09:19.840 --> 00:09:21.840 The narrator said, "He demonstrated it like this, 00:09:21.840 --> 00:09:23.840 Striking one hand against the other." 00:09:23.840 --> 00:09:27.840 "He then milked a small amount of milk for me into a vessel. 00:09:27.840 --> 00:09:31.840 I had prepared for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:09:31.840 --> 00:09:34.840 A small water-skin with a piece of cloth over its mouth, 00:09:34.840 --> 00:09:37.840 So I poured water over the vessel until its base cooled down. 00:09:37.840 --> 00:09:41.899 I brought it to the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:09:41.899 --> 00:09:44.899 Finding that he had just awakened, 00:09:44.899 --> 00:09:45.899 And I said, 00:09:45.899 --> 00:09:47.899 'Drink, O Messenger of Allah.' 00:09:47.899 --> 00:09:50.899 He drank until I was fully satisfied and content. 00:09:50.899 --> 00:09:51.929 Then I said, 00:09:51.929 --> 00:09:54.929 'The time for departure has arrived, O Messenger of Allah.' 00:09:54.929 --> 00:09:55.929 He replied, 'Indeed.' 00:09:55.929 --> 00:09:58.929 So we set out while the people were in pursuit of us, 00:09:58.929 --> 00:10:04.929 And none of them caught up with us except Suraqah ibn Malik upon his horse. 00:10:04.929 --> 00:10:05.929 I said, 00:10:05.929 --> 00:10:08.929 'The pursuers have overtaken us, O Messenger of Allah!' 00:10:08.929 --> 00:10:13.929 He said, 'Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.' 00:10:13.929 --> 00:10:18.190 Throughout the journey of the Hijrah, al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:10:18.190 --> 00:10:23.190 Would walk in front of the Prophet, peace be upon him, for a while, 00:10:23.190 --> 00:10:25.190 And behind him for a while. 00:10:25.190 --> 00:10:26.190 The Prophet asked him about it, 00:10:26.190 --> 00:10:27.190 And he replied: 00:10:27.190 --> 00:10:29.190 'When I remember the pursuers from behind, 00:10:29.190 --> 00:10:30.190 I walk behind you; 00:10:30.190 --> 00:10:32.190 And when I remember potential ambushes ahead, 00:10:32.190 --> 00:10:34.190 "So that I might walk ahead of you." 00:10:34.190 --> 00:10:37.220 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: 00:10:37.220 --> 00:10:41.220 "If something were to happen, would you prefer to die in my place?" 00:10:41.220 --> 00:10:42.220 He replied: 00:10:42.220 --> 00:10:45.220 "Yes, by the One Who sent you with the truth!" 00:10:45.220 --> 00:10:49.759 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to Hassan Ibn Thabit: 00:10:49.759 --> 00:10:52.759 "Have you composed any poetry concerning Abu Bakr?" 00:10:52.759 --> 00:10:54.759 He said, "Yes." 00:10:54.759 --> 00:10:55.759 The Prophet said: 00:10:55.759 --> 00:10:57.759 "Recite, and I shall listen." 00:10:57.759 --> 00:10:59.759 So he recited: 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:02.759 "And the second of two in the lofty cave, when 00:11:02.759 --> 00:11:06.759 the enemy encircled it as they climbed the mountain; 00:11:06.759 --> 00:11:10.759 and the beloved of the Messenger of Allah, whom all creation 00:11:10.759 --> 00:11:14.919 knew had no equal among men." 00:11:14.919 --> 00:11:19.919 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) smiled so broadly that his molar teeth showed, 00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:21.919 and then said: 00:11:21.919 --> 00:11:23.919 "You have spoken the truth, O Hassan; 00:11:23.919 --> 00:11:26.340 he is just as you have said." 00:11:26.340 --> 00:11:28.340 And during the Incident of the Slander (al-Ifk), 00:11:28.340 --> 00:11:33.340 when Allah revealed the exoneration of 'A'ishah, daughter of al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with them both), 00:11:33.340 --> 00:11:35.340 Abu Bakr said— 00:11:35.340 --> 00:11:39.340 and he used to provide financial support to Mistah Ibn Uthathah (may Allah be pleased with him) due to his poverty: 00:11:39.340 --> 00:11:43.340 "By Allah, I will never spend anything on Mistah again, 00:11:43.340 --> 00:11:47.340 after what he said concerning 'A'ishah!" 00:11:47.340 --> 00:11:49.340 Then Allah Almighty revealed: 00:11:49.340 --> 00:11:52.340 ﴾And let not those of virtue among you 00:11:52.340 --> 00:11:57.340 and ample means swear not to give aid to their relatives and the needy... 00:11:57.340 --> 00:12:01.340 “And let not those who possess dignity and ease among you swear not to give to the near of kin and to the needy, and to fugitives for the cause of Allah. Let them forgive and show indulgence. Yearn ye not that Allah may forgive you? Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (24:22) 00:12:12.340 --> 00:12:17.340 And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.﴿ 00:12:17.340 --> 00:12:18.340 Abu Bakr said: 00:12:18.340 --> 00:12:19.340 "Indeed! 00:12:19.340 --> 00:12:20.340 Indeed, 00:12:20.340 --> 00:12:24.340 by Allah, I certainly desire that Allah forgive me!" 00:12:24.340 --> 00:12:28.340 So he resumed the financial provision he used to give him and said: 00:12:28.340 --> 00:12:32.399 "By Allah, I will never withhold it from him." 00:12:32.399 --> 00:12:36.399 Al-Siddiq was not content merely with the honor of being the first to embrace Islam; 00:12:36.399 --> 00:12:39.399 rather, he took the initiative in calling others to Allah. 00:12:39.399 --> 00:12:43.399 Through his efforts, an elite core of Islam's early foundation accepted the faith, 00:12:43.399 --> 00:12:45.399 such as 'Uthman Ibn 'Affan, 00:12:45.399 --> 00:12:47.399 Talhah, al-Zubayr, 00:12:47.399 --> 00:12:49.399 'Abd al-Rahman Ibn 'Awf, 00:12:49.399 --> 00:12:53.399 and Abu 'Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with them all). 00:12:53.399 --> 00:13:00.399 He also purchased a number of slaves who were being tortured for the sake of Allah because of their Islam, 00:13:00.399 --> 00:13:03.399 and then emancipated them, seeking his reward only with Allah. 00:13:03.399 --> 00:13:05.399 Among these were: 00:13:05.399 --> 00:13:07.399 Bilal Ibn Rabah, 00:13:07.399 --> 00:13:09.399 'Amir Ibn Fuhayrah, 00:13:09.399 --> 00:13:10.399 Zannirah, 00:13:10.399 --> 00:13:12.399 al-Nahdiyyah and her daughter, 00:13:12.399 --> 00:13:14.399 Umm 'Ubays, 00:13:14.399 --> 00:13:16.399 and the slave-girl of Banu Mu'ammil— 00:13:16.399 --> 00:13:19.559 may Allah be pleased with them all. 00:13:19.559 --> 00:13:21.559 Whenever he was praised, he would supplicate: 00:13:21.559 --> 00:13:24.559 "O Allah, You know me better than I know myself, 00:13:24.559 --> 00:13:27.559 and I know myself better than they know me. 00:13:27.559 --> 00:13:31.559 O Allah, make me better than what they think of me, 00:13:31.559 --> 00:13:33.559 forgive me for what they do not know, 00:13:33.559 --> 00:13:37.659 and do not hold me accountable for what they say." 00:13:37.659 --> 00:13:42.659 Al-Siddiq accompanied the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) throughout his entire life, 00:13:42.659 --> 00:13:44.789 and never once caused him distress. 00:13:44.789 --> 00:13:47.789 He was the best of this Ummah after its Prophet 00:13:47.789 --> 00:13:50.789 (upon him be the best of blessings and the purest of peace), 00:13:50.789 --> 00:13:52.789 and the most merciful toward it. 00:13:52.789 --> 00:13:54.789 He was an exceedingly tender-hearted man 00:13:54.789 --> 00:13:57.789 who could not contain his weeping 00:13:57.789 --> 00:13:59.789 when reciting the Qur'an. 00:13:59.789 --> 00:14:02.789 Yet in moments of valor and courage, 00:14:02.789 --> 00:14:05.789 one could scarcely find any peer or equal to him. 00:14:05.789 --> 00:14:09.789 This will be the focus of our discussion concerning this noble Companion 00:14:09.789 --> 00:14:12.789 in our next gathering, if Allah wills. 00:14:12.789 --> 00:14:17.259 To the Chosen Prophet, 00:14:17.259 --> 00:14:23.259 the best of Companions was explicitly promised 00:14:23.259 --> 00:14:27.259 two eternal gardens in Paradise, 00:14:27.259 --> 00:14:30.259 adding to their exalted honor: 00:14:30.259 --> 00:14:33.259 they are Talhah, 00:14:33.259 --> 00:14:35.259 Ibn 'Awf, 00:14:35.259 --> 00:14:39.259 al-Zubayr, along with 00:14:39.259 --> 00:14:41.259 Abu 'Ubaydah, 00:14:41.259 --> 00:14:46.259 the two Sa'ds, and the two Caliphs.
