00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:04.000 I will bear the burden of her upbringing." 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:06.000 So he would take her from him 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:08.000 and care for her until she grew up. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:11.000 Then he would say to her father, 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:13.000 "If you wish, I will hand her over to you; 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:16.000 and if you wish, I will continue to bear the cost of her upbringing." 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:20.699 Zayd met Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:03:20.699 --> 00:03:22.699 before his prophetic mission. 00:03:22.699 --> 00:03:25.699 A dining cloth was presented to the Prophet, peace be upon him, but he refused to eat from it. 00:03:25.699 --> 00:03:28.699 Then it was offered to Zayd, 00:03:28.699 --> 00:03:30.699 and he too refused to eat from it, saying, 00:03:30.699 --> 00:03:33.699 "I do not eat that which you slaughter upon your pagan altars." 00:03:33.699 --> 00:03:38.699 He used to say, 00:03:38.699 --> 00:03:42.699 “How should ye not eat of that over which the name of Allah hath been mentioned, when He hath explained unto you that which is forbidden unto you unless ye are compelled thereto. But lo! many are led astray by their own lusts through ignorance. Lo! thy Lord, He is Best Aware of the transgressors.” (6:119) 00:03:42.699 --> 00:03:44.740 and He sent down rain for it from the sky, 00:03:44.740 --> 00:03:46.740 and brought forth vegetation for it from the earth, 00:03:46.740 --> 00:03:49.740 yet you slaughter it under a name other than Allah's." 00:03:49.740 --> 00:03:51.740 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was once asked 00:03:51.740 --> 00:03:56.409 about Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl, 00:03:56.409 --> 00:03:59.409 and he said, 00:03:59.409 --> 00:04:01.409 "He will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection as a nation unto himself." 00:04:01.409 --> 00:04:03.409 He also said, 00:04:03.409 --> 00:04:06.409 "I entered Paradise 00:04:06.409 --> 00:04:08.409 and saw two lush gardens belonging to Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl." 00:04:08.409 --> 00:04:10.409 Zayd ibn 'Amr, the father of Sa'id, passed away 00:04:10.409 --> 00:04:14.409 five years before the Prophet's mission began, 00:04:14.409 --> 00:04:18.660 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:04:18.660 --> 00:04:21.660 In this household, 00:04:21.660 --> 00:04:24.529 and within this monotheistic environment, 00:04:24.529 --> 00:04:26.529 Sa'id ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, was born and raised. 00:04:26.529 --> 00:04:29.529 So when the Prophet, peace be upon him, was sent, 00:04:29.529 --> 00:04:33.529 it was no surprise that Sa'id was among the foremost converts to Islam, 00:04:33.529 --> 00:04:37.589 as he embraced Islam after thirteen men, 00:04:37.589 --> 00:04:42.589 before the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered 00:04:42.589 --> 00:04:46.589 the house of Al-Arqam. 00:04:46.589 --> 00:04:49.589 Sa'id ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, married 00:04:49.589 --> 00:04:51.720 his cousin Fatimah bint al-Khattab, 00:04:51.720 --> 00:04:54.720 the sister of 'Umar, 00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:57.720 and she too embraced Islam. 00:04:57.720 --> 00:04:59.720 Their conversion to Islam occurred before that of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:04:59.720 --> 00:05:01.720 Initially, they concealed their Islam from 'Umar out of fear of him. 00:05:01.720 --> 00:05:06.720 When 'Umar learned of his cousin Sa'id's conversion, 00:05:06.720 --> 00:05:12.720 he began to mistreat him and tie him up to turn him back from this religion. 00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:16.720 Sa'id would later say, 00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:21.720 "By Allah, I remember 00:05:21.720 --> 00:05:24.720 when 'Umar had me bound for accepting Islam, before he himself embraced it." 00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:26.720 Sa'id ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, was among the prominent Companions 00:05:26.720 --> 00:05:32.709 and the early Emigrants. 00:05:32.709 --> 00:05:37.709 Sa'id was overjoyed with his conversion to Islam, 00:05:37.709 --> 00:05:39.709 as the very religion his father had sought was now manifest. 00:05:39.709 --> 00:05:43.709 Ever since he embraced Islam, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:05:43.709 --> 00:05:47.709 he remained close to the Messenger, peace be upon him, most of the time, 00:05:47.709 --> 00:05:50.709 and participated with him in all his military expeditions, 00:05:50.709 --> 00:05:54.709 except for the Battle of Badr, the first battle in Islam, 00:05:54.709 --> 00:05:57.709 because the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had sent him 00:05:57.709 --> 00:06:02.709 alongside Talhah ibn 'Ubaydullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, 00:06:02.709 --> 00:06:05.709 to gather intelligence on Quraysh. 00:06:05.709 --> 00:06:09.709 When he returned, he found that the Muslims had already set out for Badr, 00:06:09.709 --> 00:06:12.709 so he prepared to join them. 00:06:12.709 --> 00:06:17.709 However, he met the Prophet, peace be upon him, returning from the battle. 00:06:17.709 --> 00:06:20.709 This grieved both of them deeply, 00:06:20.709 --> 00:06:25.709 but the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:06:25.709 --> 00:06:28.709 counted them among those who had witnessed it, 00:06:28.709 --> 00:06:31.709 assigning them a share of the spoils and reward, 00:06:31.709 --> 00:06:33.709 so it was as if they had participated in the battle alongside the Companions. 00:06:33.709 --> 00:06:36.709 Sa'id ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, described 00:06:36.709 --> 00:06:40.709 his participation in the Battle of Yarmouk 00:06:40.709 --> 00:06:44.029 during the reign of the Caliph 'Umar al-Faruq, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:06:44.029 --> 00:06:47.029 Sa'id said: 00:06:47.029 --> 00:06:51.029 "On the day of Yarmouk, 00:06:51.029 --> 00:06:53.029 we were around twenty-four thousand or thereabouts, 00:06:53.029 --> 00:06:55.029 while the Byzantines advanced against us with one hundred and twenty thousand. 00:06:55.029 --> 00:07:00.029 They approached us with heavy, measured steps, 00:07:00.029 --> 00:07:03.029 as if they were mountains moved by invisible hands. 00:07:03.029 --> 00:07:06.029 Ahead of them marched bishops, patriarchs, and priests, 00:07:06.029 --> 00:07:10.029 bearing crosses 00:07:10.029 --> 00:07:15.029 and chanting prayers aloud, 00:07:15.029 --> 00:07:17.029 which the army repeated after them, 00:07:17.029 --> 00:07:19.029 producing a roar like the rumbling of thunder. 00:07:19.029 --> 00:07:22.029 When the Muslims saw them in this state, 00:07:22.029 --> 00:07:25.029 they were awed by their immense numbers, 00:07:25.029 --> 00:07:29.290 and a measure of fear entered their hearts. 00:07:29.290 --> 00:07:31.290 At that moment, Abu 'Ubaydah, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up, 00:07:31.290 --> 00:07:34.290 addressed the people, and urged them to fight. 00:07:34.290 --> 00:07:38.449 Then a man stepped out from the Muslim ranks 00:07:38.449 --> 00:07:42.449 and said to Abu 'Ubaydah, 00:07:42.449 --> 00:07:45.449 'I have resolved to fulfill my destiny this hour; 00:07:45.449 --> 00:07:47.449 do you have a message you wish to send to the Messenger of Allah?' 00:07:47.449 --> 00:07:51.449 Abu 'Ubaydah replied, 'Yes, 00:07:51.449 --> 00:07:55.449 convey my greetings of peace to him and those of the Muslims, 00:07:55.449 --> 00:07:58.449 and say to him: 00:07:58.449 --> 00:08:01.449 "O Messenger of Allah, 00:08:01.449 --> 00:08:03.449 we have indeed found true what our Lord promised us."' 00:08:03.449 --> 00:08:05.449 Sa'id said: 00:08:05.449 --> 00:08:09.449 'No sooner had I heard his words 00:08:09.449 --> 00:08:11.480 and seen him unsheathe his sword 00:08:11.480 --> 00:08:13.480 and march forth to confront the enemies of Allah, 00:08:13.480 --> 00:08:16.480 than I threw myself to the ground, 00:08:16.480 --> 00:08:19.480 knelt down, 00:08:19.480 --> 00:08:21.480 leveled my spear, 00:08:21.480 --> 00:08:23.480 and struck down the first horseman who charged at us. 00:08:23.480 --> 00:08:25.480 Then I leaped toward the enemy, 00:08:25.480 --> 00:08:29.480 for Allah had stripped every trace of fear from my heart. 00:08:29.480 --> 00:08:31.480 The men then surged against the Byzantines 00:08:31.480 --> 00:08:35.480 and continued fighting them 00:08:35.480 --> 00:08:38.480 until Allah decreed victory for the believers.' 00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:40.480 When death approached the Rightly-Guided Caliph 00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:45.220 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:08:45.220 --> 00:08:48.220 he selected six Companions to form a consultative council (*shura*) 00:08:48.220 --> 00:08:51.220 to choose the next caliph from among themselves. 00:08:51.220 --> 00:08:54.220 Sa'id ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, was not included among them, 00:08:54.220 --> 00:08:57.220 despite being one of the most eminent Companions, 00:08:57.220 --> 00:09:01.220 so that 'Umar would leave no suspicion of favoritism, 00:09:01.220 --> 00:09:04.220 as Sa'id was his brother-in-law and cousin. 00:09:04.220 --> 00:09:08.220 Had he included him among the consultative council, 00:09:08.220 --> 00:09:11.220 some might have thought he favored him due to his kinship, 00:09:11.220 --> 00:09:14.220 or that someone might show deference to Sa'id 00:09:14.220 --> 00:09:19.220 and grant him the caliphate because of his relation to 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:09:19.220 --> 00:09:21.220 So 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, wished 00:09:21.220 --> 00:09:26.220 to close this door completely, 00:09:26.220 --> 00:09:29.220 and thus did not mention him among them. 00:09:29.220 --> 00:09:31.220 Sa'id ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, was 00:09:31.220 --> 00:09:33.220 one whose supplications were readily answered, 00:09:33.220 --> 00:09:36.950 and there are well-known accounts regarding this. 00:09:36.950 --> 00:09:38.950 Among them is that Arwa bint Uways 00:09:38.950 --> 00:09:41.950 falsely claimed that he had taken a piece of her land, 00:09:41.950 --> 00:09:44.950 bringing her grievance to the governor of Medina at that time. 00:09:44.950 --> 00:09:48.950 Sa'id, may Allah be pleased with him, said, 00:09:48.950 --> 00:09:52.950 'How could I take her land 00:09:52.950 --> 00:09:56.049 when I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 00:09:56.049 --> 00:09:59.049 "Whoever usurps a handspan of land unjustly, 00:09:59.049 --> 00:10:03.049 Allah will encircle his neck with it on the Day of Resurrection from seven earths"? 00:10:03.049 --> 00:10:07.049 Let her come and take whatever right she claims.' 00:10:07.049 --> 00:10:11.049 Then he raised his hands and said, 00:10:11.049 --> 00:10:15.049 'O Allah, if she is lying, 00:10:15.049 --> 00:10:17.179 Then he raised his hands and said, 00:10:17.179 --> 00:10:20.179 "O Allah, if she is lying, 00:10:20.179 --> 00:10:23.179 do not let her die until You blind her sight 00:10:23.179 --> 00:10:26.179 and make her death occur in that very plot of land." 00:10:26.179 --> 00:10:29.179 So they returned and informed her of that. 00:10:29.179 --> 00:10:33.179 She came and took what she claimed was her right, 00:10:33.179 --> 00:10:35.179 and built a structure upon it. 00:10:35.179 --> 00:10:39.179 But shortly thereafter, she became blind. 00:10:39.179 --> 00:10:43.179 One day, while walking on her land, 00:10:43.179 --> 00:10:45.179 she fell into a well 00:10:45.179 --> 00:10:47.179 and died. 00:10:47.179 --> 00:10:50.909 Sa'id ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, was 00:10:50.909 --> 00:10:53.909 a devout, pure, and humble servant of Allah, 00:10:53.909 --> 00:10:55.909 just as Allah Almighty loves. 00:10:55.909 --> 00:10:58.909 He did not seek prominence, 00:10:58.909 --> 00:11:01.909 nor did he desire or strive for positions of authority. 00:11:01.909 --> 00:11:05.980 He once related a hadith to a group of his companions, saying: 00:11:05.980 --> 00:11:09.980 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 00:11:09.980 --> 00:11:11.980 "Ten are in Paradise: 00:11:11.980 --> 00:11:13.980 Abu Bakr is in Paradise, 00:11:13.980 --> 00:11:15.980 'Umar is in Paradise, 00:11:15.980 --> 00:11:17.980 'Uthman, 'Ali, 00:11:17.980 --> 00:11:19.980 Al-Zubayr, Talhah, 00:11:19.980 --> 00:11:22.980 'Abd al-Rahman, Abu 'Ubaydah, 00:11:22.980 --> 00:11:24.980 and Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas— 00:11:24.980 --> 00:11:26.980 all of them are in Paradise." 00:11:26.980 --> 00:11:28.980 Thus he counted these nine, 00:11:28.980 --> 00:11:30.980 and remained silent regarding the tenth. 00:11:30.980 --> 00:11:32.980 The people said, 00:11:32.980 --> 00:11:34.980 "We adjure you by Allah, O Abu al-A'war, 00:11:34.980 --> 00:11:36.980 who is the tenth?" 00:11:36.980 --> 00:11:38.980 He replied, 00:11:38.980 --> 00:11:40.980 "Since you adjure me by Allah, 00:11:40.980 --> 00:11:42.980 Abu al-A'war is in Paradise." 00:11:42.980 --> 00:11:44.980 He meant himself, 00:11:44.980 --> 00:11:48.980 as his agnomen (kunya) was Abu al-A'war. 00:11:48.980 --> 00:11:53.460 Sa'id ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, passed away in Al-'Aqiq, 00:11:53.460 --> 00:11:56.460 and he was carried to Medina where he was buried. 00:11:56.460 --> 00:12:00.460 That was in the year 51 AH, 00:12:00.460 --> 00:12:03.460 when he was seventy-some years old. 00:12:03.460 --> 00:12:05.460 Ibn 'Umar rode out to him, 00:12:05.460 --> 00:12:08.460 Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas washed his body, 00:12:08.460 --> 00:12:12.460 and they descended into his grave—may Allah be pleased with them all. 00:12:13.460 --> 00:12:15.740 That was Sa'id ibn Zayd, 00:12:15.740 --> 00:12:18.740 and those were some of his virtues. 00:12:18.740 --> 00:12:20.740 And with him, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:12:20.740 --> 00:12:22.740 we conclude the biographies of the ten 00:12:22.740 --> 00:12:24.740 who were given the glad tidings of Paradise— 00:12:24.740 --> 00:12:27.740 who are the best of Quraysh, 00:12:27.740 --> 00:12:30.740 the best of the foremost Muhajirun, 00:12:30.740 --> 00:12:32.740 the best of the veterans of Badr, 00:12:32.740 --> 00:12:34.740 the best of the Companions of the Tree, 00:12:34.740 --> 00:12:38.740 and the masters of this Ummah in this world and the Hereafter. 00:12:38.740 --> 00:12:44.740 We have presented their virtues that demonstrate their stature and high status; 00:12:44.740 --> 00:12:48.740 thus, it is obligatory upon every Muslim to firmly believe 00:12:49.740 --> 00:12:53.740 that they are individually among the people of Paradise, 00:12:53.740 --> 00:12:57.740 just as the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, informed us— 00:12:57.740 --> 00:13:00.740 he who does not speak from his own desire. 00:13:00.740 --> 00:13:03.740 “It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired,” (53:4) 00:13:03.740 --> 00:13:06.740 May Allah be pleased with them and make them pleased, 00:13:06.740 --> 00:13:10.740 and forgive those who praise and honor them 00:13:21.789 --> 00:13:24.789 in the Gardens of Eternity. 00:13:24.789 --> 00:13:28.789 These two verses increase their honor: 00:13:28.789 --> 00:13:31.789 "They are Talhah, 00:13:31.789 --> 00:13:33.789 Ibn 'Auf, 00:13:33.789 --> 00:13:37.789 Al-Zubayr, along with 00:13:37.789 --> 00:13:39.789 Abu 'Ubaydah, 00:13:39.789 --> 00:13:41.789 the two Sa'ds, 00:13:41.789 --> 00:13:44.789 and the Caliphs."
