Pause and reflect upon the Companions, the scholars, and the eminent figures.
A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions, from the masters of the Ansar.
I witnessed the Pledge of al-'Aqabah with the seventy men.
I witnessed Badr, Uhud, and all the battles alongside the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I was among the renowned archers.
I was the standard-bearer for the tribe of Banu Zafar on the day of the conquest of Makkah.
I was the first to enter Madinah reciting Surah Maryam from the Qur'an.
I spent a night reciting Surah "Say, He is Allah, [who is] One," repeating it until dawn broke.
This was mentioned to the Prophet, peace be upon him.
He said, "By Him in whose hand is my soul,
it is equivalent to a third of the Qur'an."
A hypocrite from the Banu Ubayriq tribe committed an offense
against a storehouse of ours where we kept food and weapons.
He took what was inside.
We tracked his footprints
and identified the thief.
I mentioned this to the Prophet, peace be upon him.
He said, "I will look into this matter."
When the Banu Ubayriq heard of this,
a group of them gathered
and came to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
They said, "O Messenger of Allah,
these people have targeted a household among us known for Islam and righteousness,
accusing them of theft without evidence or proof."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, summoned me
and said, reproaching me,
"You have targeted a household known for Islam and righteousness,
accusing them of theft without evidence or proof."
When I heard that,
I withdrew,
and I wished I had given away some of my wealth
rather than having spoken to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, about that matter.
Not long after,
the word of Allah the Almighty was revealed, vindicating me
and addressing the Prophet, peace be upon him:
"Indeed, We have revealed to you the Book in truth,"
“Lo! We reveal unto thee the Scripture with the truth, that thou mayst judge between mankind by that which Allah showeth thee. And be not thou a pleader for the treacherous;” (4:105)
"so do not be an advocate for the treacherous."
“And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” (4:106)
“And plead not on behalf of (people) who deceive themselves. Lo! Allah loveth not one who is treacherous and sinful.” (4:107)
“And plead not on behalf of (people) who deceive themselves. Lo! Allah loveth not one who is treacherous and sinful.” (4:107)
Meaning the Banu Ubayriq.
During the Battle of Uhud,
my eye was injured.
I was a newlywed,
and they wanted to remove it.
I said, "No,
until we consult the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."
I came to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
with my eye in my hand.
He said, "What is this?"
I said, "This is what you see, O Messenger of Allah."
He, peace be upon him, said,
"If you wish, you may be patient and have Paradise,
or if you wish, I will restore it for you."
I said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,
Paradise is a magnificent reward and a glorious gift,
but I have a wife whom I love,
and if she sees my eye [in this state],
I fear she might find me repulsive.
Instead, restore it for me, O Messenger of Allah,
and ask Allah to grant me Paradise."
He, peace be upon him, said,
"I will do so, if Allah wills."
He took it in his hand,
placed it back in its socket,
and prayed for me to enter Paradise.
It became my best and healthiest eye,
and whoever met me
could not tell which of my eyes had been injured.
