WEBVTT 00:00:01.360 --> 00:00:12.140 Pause and reflect on the lives of the Companions, the scholars, and the prominent figures of our history. 00:00:12.140 --> 00:00:16.140 Here is a new challenge: Who am I? 00:00:16.140 --> 00:00:26.320 I am one of the senior Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, from the Ansar, and I was among those closest to him. 00:00:26.320 --> 00:00:33.479 I was a merchant known for my bravery and horsemanship since the days of the Jahiliyyah. 00:00:33.479 --> 00:00:41.479 The Prophet, peace be upon him, appointed me as his deputy over Medina when he departed for the great Battle of Badr. 00:00:41.479 --> 00:00:48.479 He then granted me a share of the reward and the spoils, and for this reason, I am counted among the veterans of Badr. 00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:54.280 I witnessed all the subsequent battles alongside him. 00:00:54.280 --> 00:01:03.280 After the Battle of the Trench concluded, the Prophet, peace be upon him, set out with three thousand Muslims toward the Banu Qurayza. 00:01:03.280 --> 00:01:09.280 They were the ones who had broken their covenants and conspired with the confederates against the Muslims. 00:01:09.280 --> 00:01:15.280 He laid siege to them, and after several days, they surrendered. 00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:20.280 However, they wished to consult with one of the Muslims. 00:01:20.280 --> 00:01:28.280 They sent word to the Prophet, peace be upon him, requesting that he send me to them for consultation. 00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:36.340 I had been an ally of theirs before Islam, and my wealth and children were in their territory. 00:01:36.340 --> 00:01:45.340 When they saw me, the men stood up, and they brought the women and children before me, weeping in my face. 00:01:45.340 --> 00:01:52.409 I felt deep sorrow for them, and they asked me, "Do you think we should submit to the judgment of Muhammad?" 00:01:52.409 --> 00:02:02.409 I said, "Yes," but I gestured with my hand toward my throat, signaling slaughter—meaning that you will be slaughtered. 00:02:02.409 --> 00:02:09.539 I immediately realized that I had betrayed Allah and His Messenger, and I was horrified by what I had done. 00:02:09.539 --> 00:02:16.539 I left them in haste and did not return to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. 00:02:16.539 --> 00:02:24.539 Instead, I went to the mosque, tied myself to one of its pillars, and swore that no one would untie me, 00:02:24.539 --> 00:02:28.539 except for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, with his own hand. 00:02:28.539 --> 00:02:38.699 When the news of my situation reached the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, he said, "Had he come to me, I would have sought forgiveness for him." 00:02:38.699 --> 00:02:44.699 "But since he has done what he has done, I am not the one to release him from his place," 00:02:44.699 --> 00:02:47.699 "until Allah accepts his repentance." 00:02:47.699 --> 00:02:50.919 I remained tied to the pillar for six nights. 00:02:50.919 --> 00:02:53.919 My wife would come at every prayer time, 00:02:53.919 --> 00:02:56.919 and she would untie my bonds for the prayer. 00:02:56.919 --> 00:03:00.919 I would perform my ablution, then return and tie myself back to the pillar. 00:03:00.919 --> 00:03:01.919 And so it continued. 00:03:01.919 --> 00:03:07.919 Until one night, in the early hours of the morning, Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, heard 00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:11.919 the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, laughing. 00:03:12.919 --> 00:03:16.919 She asked, "What are you laughing at, O Messenger of Allah?" 00:03:16.919 --> 00:03:19.919 He gave her the glad tidings that Allah had accepted my repentance. 00:03:19.919 --> 00:03:25.080 Umm Salamah said, "Shall I not give him the good news, O Messenger of Allah?" 00:03:25.080 --> 00:03:28.080 He replied, "Yes, if you wish." 00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:32.180 So she stood at the door of her chamber, may Allah be pleased with her, 00:03:32.180 --> 00:03:37.180 and said to me, "Rejoice, for Allah has accepted your repentance." 00:03:37.180 --> 00:03:40.300 And Allah the Almighty revealed regarding me the verse: 00:03:40.300 --> 00:03:44.659 "And [there are] others who have confessed their sins," 00:03:44.659 --> 00:03:48.659 "having mixed a righteous deed" 00:03:48.659 --> 00:03:50.659 "with another that was evil." 00:03:50.659 --> 00:03:54.659 “And (there are) others who have acknowledged their faults. They mixed a righteous action with another that was bad. It may be that Allah will relent toward them. Lo!
