A serious challenge: who am I?
I am one of the Companions.
I am from the Thaqif tribe of Ta'if.
I arrived with my people to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, during the Year of Delegations.
I was the youngest among them.
I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, before them.
I embraced Islam.
He taught me some of the Qur'an.
I kept the company of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him.
He used to teach me the Qur'an.
When my people wanted to depart,
They said, "O Messenger of Allah,
Appoint someone over us."
So he appointed me as their leader.
And he said,
"He is intelligent,
And he has memorized a portion of the Qur'an."
They were satisfied and said,
"We will not change a leader whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has appointed over us."
I returned with them to Ta'if.
I was their leader and their imam in prayer.
One day, I complained to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, of a pain
That I had felt in my body since I embraced Islam,
To the point that it almost destroyed me.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me,
"Place your hand on the part of your body that hurts,
And say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) three times,
And say seven times:
'I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear.'"
I did so,
And the pain left me.
Something used to interfere with me in my prayer,
To the point that I would not know what I was praying.
The Qur'an would slip away from my memory.
When I saw that,
I traveled to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
He said,
"What brought you?"
I said,
"O Messenger of Allah,
Something has interfered with my prayers,
To the point that I do not know what I am praying,
And the Qur'an is slipping away from me."
He said,
"That is the devil.
Come closer."
I drew near to him,
And I sat on the balls of my feet.
He struck my chest with his hand,
And blew into my mouth,
And said,
"Get out, enemy of Allah!"
He did that three times.
Then he said,
"Return to your land."
By Allah, he never bothered me in my prayer again,
And I never forgot anything I wanted to memorize.
I played a role in preventing the Thaqif tribe from apostasy,
As I gave a sermon to them after the death of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
And the apostasy of the rest of the Arabs.
I said,
"O people of Thaqif,
You were the last of the people to embrace Islam,
So do not be the first of them to apostatize."
So Allah made them steadfast.
I once sent some of my young men as merchants.
When they returned,
I said,
"What have you brought back?"
They said,
"We have brought merchandise,
Where the profit on a dirham is ten."
I said,
"What is this merchandise you have brought,
That has such a great profit?"
They said,
"Wine."
I said,
"Wine?
We have been forbidden from drinking it and selling it."
So I began opening the mouths of the containers and pouring them out in the streets.
