WEBVTT 00:00:01.360 --> 00:00:04.360 Stop 00:00:04.360 --> 00:00:12.140 and learn about the Companions, scholars, and prominent figures. 00:00:12.140 --> 00:00:16.140 A new challenge: Who am I? 00:00:16.140 --> 00:00:21.320 I am one of the noble Companions. 00:00:21.320 --> 00:00:25.320 I was the chieftain of the Daws tribe during the pre-Islamic period of ignorance, 00:00:25.320 --> 00:00:29.320 a nobleman among the most distinguished Arabs, 00:00:29.320 --> 00:00:33.320 and one of the widely recognized figures of chivalry. 00:00:33.320 --> 00:00:36.320 My cooking pot was never taken off the fire, 00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:39.320 nor was my door ever locked before any nighttime visitor. 00:00:39.320 --> 00:00:43.320 I fed the hungry, provided safety for the fearful, 00:00:43.320 --> 00:00:46.320 and granted sanctuary to whoever sought refuge. 00:00:46.320 --> 00:00:49.320 In addition, I was a cultured, intelligent man, 00:00:49.320 --> 00:00:52.320 a poet of delicate sensitivity, 00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:55.320 well-versed in both the sweet and bitter nuances of eloquence, 00:00:55.320 --> 00:00:59.700 deeply swayed by the magic of words. 00:00:59.700 --> 00:01:02.700 I embraced Islam early on in Mecca, 00:01:02.700 --> 00:01:05.700 and I requested of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) 00:01:05.700 --> 00:01:08.700 that he migrate to our lands so we might support him. 00:01:08.700 --> 00:01:11.700 I said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, 00:01:11.700 --> 00:01:15.799 would you accept a fortified stronghold and protection?" 00:01:15.799 --> 00:01:19.799 But the Prophet (peace be upon him) declined that, 00:01:19.799 --> 00:01:23.799 because of the honor Allah had reserved for the Ansar. 00:01:23.799 --> 00:01:27.950 When Allah willed good for me, 00:01:27.950 --> 00:01:32.950 I arrived in Mecca and met some leading men of Quraysh. 00:01:32.950 --> 00:01:35.950 They said to me, "You are a poet, 00:01:35.950 --> 00:01:39.950 and we fear that Muhammad might meet you 00:01:39.950 --> 00:01:42.950 and captivate you with some of his speech, 00:01:42.950 --> 00:01:47.019 for his words are like magic; so beware." 00:01:47.019 --> 00:01:50.019 By Allah, they kept warning me about him 00:01:50.019 --> 00:01:53.019 and forbidding me from listening to him, 00:01:53.019 --> 00:01:57.019 until I went and stuffed my ears with cotton. 00:01:57.019 --> 00:02:00.019 Then I headed early in the morning to the Mosque, 00:02:00.019 --> 00:02:03.019 and there I found the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) 00:02:03.019 --> 00:02:06.019 standing in prayer. 00:02:06.019 --> 00:02:09.020 I stood close to him, 00:02:09.020 --> 00:02:12.270 and Allah willed that I should hear some of his words. 00:02:12.270 --> 00:02:15.270 So I said to myself, 00:02:15.270 --> 00:02:18.270 "By Allah, this is sheer helplessness! 00:02:18.270 --> 00:02:21.270 I am a discerning, intelligent man; 00:02:21.270 --> 00:02:24.270 neither the good nor the bad of matters is hidden from me. 00:02:24.270 --> 00:02:27.300 By Allah, I shall listen to him; 00:02:27.300 --> 00:02:30.300 if what he brings is right guidance, I will accept it, 00:02:30.300 --> 00:02:33.300 and if not, I will avoid it." 00:02:33.300 --> 00:02:36.300 So I removed the cotton, 00:02:36.300 --> 00:02:39.430 and I had never heard speech more beautiful than his. 00:02:39.430 --> 00:02:42.430 When the Prophet (peace be upon him) departed, 00:02:42.430 --> 00:02:45.430 I followed him and entered his home with him. 00:02:45.430 --> 00:02:48.430 I said, "O Muhammad, 00:02:48.430 --> 00:02:51.430 your people came to me 00:02:51.430 --> 00:02:54.430 and told me such-and-such, 00:02:54.430 --> 00:02:57.430 but I decided, O Messenger of Allah, 00:02:57.430 --> 00:03:00.430 that I would listen to what you have to say; 00:03:00.430 --> 00:03:03.500 and it has settled in my heart that it is the truth. 00:03:03.500 --> 00:03:06.500 So present your religion to me." 00:03:06.500 --> 00:03:09.500 He presented Islam to me, 00:03:09.500 --> 00:03:12.500 and I embraced Islam. Then I said, "O Messenger of Allah, 00:03:12.500 --> 00:03:15.500 I am returning to Daws, 00:03:15.500 --> 00:03:18.500 and I am an obeyed leader among them; 00:03:18.500 --> 00:03:21.500 I will invite them to Islam, 00:03:21.500 --> 00:03:24.530 so pray that Allah grant me a sign." 00:03:24.530 --> 00:03:27.530 He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 00:03:27.530 --> 00:03:30.530 "O Allah, grant him a sign that will aid him." 00:03:30.530 --> 00:03:33.819 So I set out until I was overlooking 00:03:33.819 --> 00:03:36.819 the mountain pass of my people. 00:03:36.819 --> 00:03:39.819 When I ascended the pass, Allah placed 00:03:39.819 --> 00:03:42.819 between my eyes a light like a radiant beam, 00:03:42.819 --> 00:03:45.819 visible to people in the darkness of the night. 00:03:45.819 --> 00:03:48.819 I said, "O Allah, make it elsewhere than my face, 00:03:49.819 --> 00:03:52.819 for I fear they might think it a disfigurement 00:03:52.819 --> 00:03:55.819 because I abandoned their gods." 00:03:55.819 --> 00:03:58.819 So the light shifted 00:03:58.819 --> 00:04:01.819 and settled onto the tip of my whip. 00:04:01.819 --> 00:04:04.819 I rode my camel toward them, 00:04:04.819 --> 00:04:07.819 and the light on the tip of my whip was like 00:04:07.819 --> 00:04:11.039 a suspended lamp. 00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:14.039 My father came to me, and I said to him, 00:04:14.039 --> 00:04:17.040 "Stay away from me, for you and I no longer belong together." 00:04:17.040 --> 00:04:20.040 He asked, "Why is that?" 00:04:20.040 --> 00:04:23.040 I replied, "I have embraced Islam 00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:26.040 and followed the religion of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." 00:04:26.040 --> 00:04:29.069 He said, "O my son, 00:04:29.069 --> 00:04:32.069 my religion is your religion." 00:04:32.069 --> 00:04:35.069 I did the same with my mother and my wife, 00:04:35.069 --> 00:04:38.139 and they embraced Islam. 00:04:38.139 --> 00:04:41.139 Then I invited Daws to Islam, 00:04:41.139 --> 00:04:44.230 but they refused, so I went to 00:04:44.230 --> 00:04:47.230 the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) 00:04:47.230 --> 00:04:50.230 and said, "O Messenger of Allah, 00:04:50.230 --> 00:04:53.230 fornication and usury have overtaken Daws, 00:04:53.230 --> 00:04:56.230 so invoke Allah against them." 00:04:56.230 --> 00:04:59.230 But he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 00:04:59.230 --> 00:05:02.300 "O Allah, guide Daws!" 00:05:02.300 --> 00:05:05.300 Then I returned to them 00:05:05.300 --> 00:05:08.300 and stayed among them calling them to Islam, 00:05:08.300 --> 00:05:11.300 until a great many of them responded. 00:05:12.300 --> 00:05:15.300 Then I arrived in Medina 00:05:15.300 --> 00:05:18.300 with ninety households from Daws, 00:05:18.300 --> 00:05:21.300 among whom was Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). 00:05:21.300 --> 00:05:24.389 I remained with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) 00:05:24.389 --> 00:05:27.389 until his passing. 00:05:27.389 --> 00:05:31.420 After the conquest of Mecca, 00:05:31.420 --> 00:05:34.420 the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent 00:05:34.420 --> 00:05:37.420 some of his Companions to destroy the idols 00:05:37.420 --> 00:05:40.420 that were throughout the Peninsula. 00:05:40.420 --> 00:05:43.420 I said, "O Messenger of Allah, 00:05:43.420 --> 00:05:46.420 send me to Dhu al-Kaffayn, 00:05:46.420 --> 00:05:49.420 the idol worshipped by Daws, 00:05:49.420 --> 00:05:52.420 so that I may burn it." 00:05:52.420 --> 00:05:55.480 He said, "Yes." 00:05:55.480 --> 00:05:58.480 So I set out to it to burn it; 00:05:58.480 --> 00:06:01.480 I reached it, 00:06:01.480 --> 00:06:04.480 set it on fire, and recited: 00:06:04.480 --> 00:06:07.480 "O Dhu al-Kaffayn, I am not of your worshippers; 00:06:07.480 --> 00:06:10.480 indeed, I have thrust fire into your very heart." 00:06:10.480 --> 00:06:13.579 When I burned it, 00:06:13.579 --> 00:06:16.579 the rest of my people all embraced Islam. 00:06:16.579 --> 00:06:20.500 After the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), 00:06:20.500 --> 00:06:23.500 I set out to fight the apostates, 00:06:23.500 --> 00:06:26.500 accompanied by my son 'Amr. 00:06:26.500 --> 00:06:29.500 While we were on the road, 00:06:29.500 --> 00:06:32.500 I saw a vision: 00:06:32.500 --> 00:06:35.500 I saw as though my head were shaved, 00:06:36.500 --> 00:06:39.500 a woman took me into her womb, 00:06:39.500 --> 00:06:42.500 and my son was searching for me 00:06:42.500 --> 00:06:45.500 earnestly, but a barrier was placed between me and him. 00:06:45.500 --> 00:06:48.569 I recounted it to my companions, 00:06:48.569 --> 00:06:51.569 and they said, "Good news." 00:06:51.569 --> 00:06:54.569 But I said, "As for me, I have interpreted it: 00:06:54.569 --> 00:06:57.600 as for shaving my head, 00:06:57.600 --> 00:07:00.600 it means it will be severed;
