A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions, an Ansari from the Banu Khazraj.
I was one of the poets of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I was one of the twelve leaders of the Ansar during the Pledge of al-'Aqabah.
I embraced Islam early in Medina after the arrival of Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him.
I was always at the forefront of goodness and virtue.
I was eager to strive in jihad and to fast for the sake of Allah.
We would be with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, on a journey during a hot day.
There would be no one among the people fasting except for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and myself.
I was keen on attending gatherings of dhikr.
I would often see a man from the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I would say to him, "Come, let us believe for an hour."
I was a loyal ally to the people of faith and held intense hatred and enmity toward the people of disbelief.
I would not let the blame of any critic deter me in the cause of Allah.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, sent me as the commander of a detachment of thirty men.
To kill the Jewish leader Usayr ibn Rizam in Khaybar.
I set out toward him, killed him, and returned victorious to Medina.
I was walking before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, during the 'Umrat al-Qada'.
When he entered Mecca to perform the 'Umrah.
I said, "Clear the way for the sons of the disbelievers, let him pass."
"Today we strike you for its revelation,"
"With blows that remove heads from their resting places,"
"And make a friend forget his own friend."
'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said to me,
"In the sanctuary of Allah and before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, you recite poetry?"
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
"Leave him be, O 'Umar."
"For by Him in whose hand is my soul,"
"His words are more severe against them than the impact of arrows."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, chose me
To be the third commander of the Muslims in the army of Mu'tah.
That army whose number did not exceed three thousand fighters.
We set out to meet the Romans.
When we approached the land of the non-Arabs,
News reached us that the enemy
Had prepared for us an army numbering two hundred thousand fighters,
From the Romans and the Ghassanids.
The Islamic army halted,
And they began to consult among themselves.
I encouraged the Muslims and said to them,
"O people, by Allah, that which you dislike,"
"Is the very thing for which you set out,"
"Which is martyrdom."
The army was invigorated and advanced to fight.
When the two armies met,
And the battle began,
It was only a matter of moments
Before the first commander was killed,
Zayd ibn Harithah, may Allah be pleased with him.
Then the second commander, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, was killed.
The banner was then passed to me.
My soul hesitated for a moment,
So I addressed it, reciting:
"I have sworn, O soul, that you shall descend,"
"Willingly or unwillingly."
"For you have long been at ease,"
"Why do I see you loathing Paradise?"
"Are you but a drop in a water skin?"
"The people have gathered and raised a clamor."
And I also said:
"O soul, if you are not killed, you will die anyway."
"This is the pool of death that you have encountered."
"Whatever you wished for, you have been granted."
"If you do as they did, you will be guided."
"And if you delay, you will be miserable."
Then I fought the people, advancing and not retreating,
Until I was killed.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, announced
To his Companions while he was in Medina
The news of my death and that of my companions,
While his eyes were shedding tears.
