Definition of asceticism and piety
One of the best things that has been said about defining both asceticism and piety
Saying of Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah
Asceticism is abandoning what is not useful in the afterlife
Piety is abandoning what one fears will cause harm in the afterlife
Therefore, asceticism is higher than piety
Because the pious person may take what is not beneficial in the afterlife
As long as there is no harm
And accordingly
Every ascetic is devout
Not every pious person is an ascetic
